Welcome to BJSC! <3

Posted by: King Rollo 2nd April 2017, 03:52 PM

My computer skills are rather limited so it's taken me hours to work out how to put that flag on a post but I've finally managed it. I'm looking forward to making my debut and listening to all your entries. I've changed my mind on which song to submit a few times but I think I've found one that is very different from what you might normally have in the contest but I hope some of you will like it.

BJSC 94 - Steven Wilson - Routine

Rolloland are proud to present their debut entry. I don't know how much prog rock has been represented in the contest before, probably not much, but you've got some now. Steven Wilson was lead singer with the band Porcupine Tree from 1987 to 2010. Routine is taken from his fourth solo album Hand Cannot Erase which won the album of the year award at the 2015 Progressive Music Awards. The song also features vocals from Ninet Tayeb. The stunning video may bring a tear to your eye so have a box of tissues ready. I've put a link to youtube as the video really needs to be seen in full screen to be fully appreciated.

Posted by: PeteFromCats 12th April 2017, 05:56 PM

Well you've won the award for the first BJSC entry to make me cry cry.gif

Posted by: Bré 🐱 12th April 2017, 06:09 PM

This is an absolutely stunning debut, I haven't listened to any of Steven Wilson's stuff before (aside from a feature on a Pendulum track) but I had a feeling I might like him, this certainly didn't disappoint! One of my favourite debut BJSC entries ever. heart.gif The video is pretty heavy but fits the song perfectly.

May have to check out the rest of this album if this is anything to go by!

Posted by: Chez W♀mbat 12th April 2017, 06:21 PM

I didn't notice at first, but I've actually come across this artist before when looking for potential entries! It was his song, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8sLcvWG1M4, was a srsly stunning experience.

Have had a listen/watch to this and it's also sounding similarly beautiful heart.gif I can't help it in the semi I'm afraid, but I'll be rooting for it to qualify for sure.

Posted by: King Rollo 12th April 2017, 06:29 PM

I'm fairly new to him myself. My friends on the Marillion forum were going on about how good his 'Hand Cannot Erase' album was so I bought it. The other track on there with a video is Perfect Life which is also a gorgeous song. I still haven't got round to listening to his other albums yet.

For our second entry,we have gone for a euphoric orchestral pop song from 2006. Guillemots are made up of musicians from England,Scotland,Brazil and Canada. They have had four top 40 hits so some of you might know them. We're Here was released as a single but only got to number 156. It's from their debut album,'Through The Windowpane',which was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

Posted by: dandy* 6th May 2017, 12:50 PM

I really liked this back when it was released, wasn't expecting to ever see it in BJSC but a welcome addition... my favourite of theirs was the wonderfully epic Sao Paulo.

Posted by: King Rollo 6th May 2017, 01:02 PM

Yes,Sao Paulo is their best song and it was considered but I thought We're Here would be more likely to get votes as it's shorter and more poppy.

Posted by: Rob S ~ 6th May 2017, 01:02 PM

I remember their song "Get Over It", made my chart too back in the day. Not that I've heard it for years! So I'm interested to find out if this is better!

Jeff Lynne is revered in Rolloland. There is a statue of him in Rollo Park,Prosperity. So we are honoured that ELO are representing us in our first Buzzjackfestivalen appearance in between being inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame and headlining Wembley Stadium. In an interview with Radio Rollo,Jeff Lynne said that the Buzzjackfestivalen was just as prestigious as the other two events.

'Endless Lies' was recorded for the 1983 album 'Secret Messages' but when it was reduced from a double album to a single album, the track was left out. It was re-recorded for 1986's 'Balance Of Power' album.

BJSC96 - Versailles by White Soxx

White Soxx are French duo Fabrice Cuitad and Frederic Mercier. The name of the latter led to a rumour at the time that it was Freddie Mercury working under a pseudonym. The song was released in 1981 and didn't chart anywhere. I first became aware of it two years later when Peter Powell played it a few times on his early evening Radio 1 show. I recorded it from the radio onto a blank cassette. No internet downloads in those days. The song has since gained a minor cult classic status.

BJSC97 - Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand by Primitive Radio Gods

Primitive Radio Gods are from California. This song got to no.74 in the UK in 1996,making it just ineligible for Unknown Pleasures where it might have been more suited. It did, however, reach no.2 in Canada and no.1 on the US 'Modern Rock Tracks' chart. It samples two lines from the BB King song 'How Blue Can You Get',his 1964 cover version of a blues song from 1949. This video was made by a student called Kelsey Ross for her class. She's taken the song title and lyrics quite literally but this is one of the best amateur music videos I've seen on youtube.

There were audible gasps in the semi-final arena as Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand was announced as the final qualifier defying all predictions. The Primitive Rollo Gods (as they are now called in Rolloland) performed as well as could be expected in the final, finishing in 40th place with 94 points. This included two 18 point maximums, the same number achieved by our previous finalist,Steven Wilson, who finished 12th in his final.

BJSC98 - Silver Screen Shower Scene (Thin White Duke Remix) by Felix Da Housecat

Felix Da Housecat is an American DJ from Chicago. Silver Screen Shower Scene features vocals from French singer/songwriter/DJ Caroline Herve under the name Miss Kittin. The Thin White Duke is English producer Stuart Price who has worked with Madonna,Pet Shop Boys,Kylie Minogue and The Killers amongst many others.

The single version reached no.55 in 2001. It then returned to the chart a year later, just creeping into the top 40 at no.39. I think this was as a result of this remix being played on Pete Tong's Radio 1 programme a few times which is how I became aware of it. The remix (included on the CD single) is very different to the single version with just the vocals kept in.

Posted by: Capybréra 1st September 2017, 01:58 AM

I'm really enjoying all of your entries so far Rollo, it'll be tough for you to top 'Routine' for me as that's still probably my favourite entry of the entire year but 'Silver Screen Shower Scene' is your best entry since then! wub.gif

Primitive Radio Gods qualifying was one of the more surprising moments in recent contests but in a good way, I'm glad that they at least didn't come last in the final.

Posted by: King Rollo 1st September 2017, 10:12 AM

Thanks,I hope Felix can qualify as well. smile.gif

BJSC98 Stats

Our switch to dance music for this contest failed as Silver Screen Shower Scene finished 27th in its semi-final with 41 points,10 points away from qualifying. The song was already a big favourite in Aeroche and they gave it their 12 points. Other countries to vote for it were Terra Avium,FARC,Skall.#00274E,Cumulonimbia and Tartford. Some of the countries in the other semi-final said they would have voted for it so a kinder semi-final draw might have got it through to the final.

Our semi-final vote:
Kluminican Republic 12
Avalonia 10
Trifoski 8
Hushkanukia 7
Tartford 6
Cor Lupus 5
Summericia 4

BJSC99 - Bullets by Archive

Archive are a British group formed in 1994 but I didn't discover them until two years ago. I have been steadily working my way through their albums since then and have reached 2009 and their sixth album 'Controlling Crowds Parts I-III' from which 'Bullets' comes. The song is the second track out of the five that make up Part I,but you wouldn't know when you listen to it that it is part of a five song suite,it works fine on its own.

Archive have released eleven studio albums but still don't have an album chart placing in the UK. They are much more popular across the rest of Europe and have had top 10 albums in Belgium,France,Switzerland and Poland. I have never known a group dabble in so many different genres of music and that maybe explains why they haven't made any breakthrough in the UK. They can't be labelled as anything. Their obscurity makes them ideal for BJSC and I'll be interested if anyone on here has come across them before.

Posted by: Pumpkin Rollo 2nd October 2017, 01:07 PM

Thanks to all those who took the "personal responsibility" to vote for Archive and help them qualify for the final. As Archive do not appear in the video, here they are performing Bullets live so you can see what they look like:

This just keeps growing on me, sounds like something else but can't quite put my finger on it, i like how it just keeps progressing and building too, first time I listened with the video, very captivating!

I've known and liked Archive since about 2005! Was pleasantly surprised to see them entered here and surprised also to see them qualify! tbh I haven't listened to any of the albums past the one called "Lights", but all those earlier ones that I've listened to many times are largely great and 'Bullets' is fab too! This may inspire me to eventually get around to listening to the six or so albums I've not heard kink.gif

good luck!

A big standout in the semi, I actually don't think I could name any other songs that sound like this! Thinking it will be a big grower as well, happy to see you making the final again.

Posted by: Jade-o-Lantern🎃 9th October 2017, 12:11 PM

This deserved so much better! I'm glad it at least managed to escape the bottom 5 though after it seemed to be lingering down there for a while. It was such a breath of fresh air in the final line-up wub.gif easily your best entry since 'Routine' which was always going to be hard to top.

BJSC100 - Untouchable by Anathema

Anathema are a Liverpool band formed in 1990 and originally called 'Pagan Angel'. The three Cavanagh brothers,Vincent,Daniel and Jamie are all part of the group. They recently won the album of the year award at the Progressive Music Awards for 'The Optimist'. Untouchable is from their ninth studio album 'Weather Systems' (2012). This song is not really prog rock at all. It sounds more like Coldplay but on a bigger scale.

But really qualifiers as a whole were very disappointing to me and this was one of the few I was really happy about getting through, this is probably one of my favourite BJSC discoveries.

Posted by: King Rollo 15th November 2017, 10:44 PM

Thanks both of you. As I've had two 18s in each of the three finals I have been part of,I'm hoping for three 18s this time.

BJSC100 Stats

Untouchable by Anathema finished 11th in its semi-final with 151 points. It received points from 13 countries,4 of which gave it 18 points which was more than any other country in either semi-final. It finished 23rd in the final with 217 points. This is our second highest placing. Seyetana,Deandria,Terra Avium,Aelandor and Persephonia gave the song their maximum 18 points. Persephonia are the first country to give us 18 points in a final twice. The five 18s easily beat our national record of two set in all three of the previous finals we have reached and was also more than any country which finished in the top 10. As we expected, our song didn't have the overall appeal to ever have any chance of winning.

I thought I would have been first on that list too! But then I guess I did only give Primitive Radio Gods one point (double figure points for all 3 of your other qualifiers though including 2 18s of course).

Posted by: Chez Wombat 21st November 2017, 10:34 PM

Always the bridesmaid it seems, but that's a great amount of points on both ends either way. You really have been a great new addition, Anathema was a wonderful discovery like I said and Routine was mainly responsible for getting me back into Steven Wilson just in time for his new material this year, more good to come from Rolloland in 2018 I'm sure *.

Posted by: dandy* 24th November 2017, 07:54 PM

Oh wow, thank you so much King Rollo! A privilege to finish atop of your points list. happy.gif

Glad I was in your top 10 of points received too, I don't always like the tracks you send but you add a much needed sense of variety to the contest and that is always welcomed by me.

BJSC101 - The Great Escape by Marillion

Marillion still have a large and loyal fanbase but since the 80s,they have gradually become unknown to everyone else so it was only a matter of time before they were chosen to represent Rolloland,to bring one of their finest songs to a wider audience. The Great Escape is from their 1994 album 'Brave' which last year was voted by their fans as their favourite album by the band. In an exclusive interview with Radio Rollo, their lead singer,Steve Hogarth, explained the concept behind the album:

"It was round about this stage that the song ideas took me back to a memory of an intriguing radio broadcast from the Bristol Police some years ago on GWR radio. The police had picked up a young woman wandering on the Severn Bridge who refused or was unable to speak to them. In desperation, the appeal was broadcast to the general public in an attempt to discover her identity. I heard this on the radio and thought it was a great first page to a mystery story. I was also concerned for her and wrote a few words of support which of course she would never see or hear. 'Runaway' took me back to her, wondering what became of her and I thought we might dream up a story which would become a piece of music like a fictional documentary of her life and the circumstances which led her to the bridge. We now had a concept album on our hands at a time when the whole genre was and probably still is terribly unfashionable. Suits us just fine!"

A film was made based on the music and lyrics of the album and the scenes in this video are from that film. Whether this is all a bit too heavy for BJSC remains to be seen, but if you like The Great Escape, please vote for it.

Worldvision III - What Matters Most by 4 Strings & Fridolijn (The Netherlands)

4 Strings are Dutchmen Carlo Resoort and Jan De Vos. I know them for their 2000 single 'Daytime' which I entered into the first Dance Forum Song Contest. They have had one top 20 hit with 'Take Me Away (Into The Night) which reached no.15 in 2002. I wanted to find something more recent which also had vocals. Although a British featured singer might have been allowed under the rules,I wanted something with a Dutch singer to make this a fully Dutch entry. Fridolijn is from Amsterdam and does a mixture of folk, jazz and electronica. I listened to some of her songs and as beautiful as they are,I thought that this trance collaboration with 4 Strings would be more likely to pick up votes.

BJSC102 - Careless Love by Swimming With Sharks

Swimming With Sharks are the German sisters Annette and Inga Humpe. Across Europe, they were known as Humpe & Humpe but for the UK,they were known as Swimming With Sharks as Humpe & Humpe might have been considered to be a bit rude. Swimming With Sharks was the name of their second album from which Careless Love comes. In 1988,the song reached no.24 in Germany and no.63 in the UK. Inga Humpe has already represented Singerpurear in BJSC83,finishing 33rd in the final with Riding Into Blue (Cowboy Song).

BJSC103 - Superstar by Ninet Tayeb

For our 10th contest,we have asked Ninet Tayeb to represent us again as she did in our debut as an uncredited vocalist on Steven Wilson's 'Routine' which is still our best placed song in BJSC,finishing 12th. She teamed up again with Steven in BJSC97 finishing 2nd for Terra Avium with 'Pariah'. This time, she has the stage all to herself. 'Superstar' is from her fifth album 'Paper Parachute' and was released as a single in 2016. At 3 minutes 22 seconds,it is the shortest song we have entered (the video is 2 minutes longer) and it's also the first song we have entered by a female solo singer. Ninet is from Israel. As well as singing, she has starred as herself in a TV series based on her life story which ran for four seasons. She now lives in the US with her husband and daughter.

Posted by: King Rollo 26th March 2018, 02:55 PM

Last night,Ninet Tayeb safely qualified for the final, giving Rolloland its first qualifier of the year. Thanks to all the countries who voted for her. Here she is performing Superstar on Rock'n'Rollo which is Rollo TV's weekly live music programme:

BJSC104 - Das Testaments Des Mabuse by Propaganda

Propaganda were part of the holy trinity (along with Frankie Goes To Hollywood and the Art Of Noise) on the ZTT record label owned by Trevor Horn and Paul Morley. Das Testaments Des Mabuse is the 12 inch mix of the Dr Mabuse single, produced by Trevor, which got to number 27 in 1984,so some of you might know the shorter version but maybe not this longer version. Propaganda are the second German group to represent Rolloland this year.

Posted by: The Snake 🐍 17th April 2018, 11:59 AM

Omg tune! I was familiar with the single version 'Dr Mabuse' of course before, but this full version sounds great, an excellent mix of 80s dance and synthpop which sounds great for 1984.

Posted by: King Rollo 17th April 2018, 01:16 PM

Thanks,I'm glad to see you're in my semi to support it. A few of the other countries that might like it are also in semi 1 so maybe it might have a chance of qualifying.

90s v 00s Spin Off - Tell Me There's A Heaven by Chris Rea

For our second spin off appearance,we have chosen this orchestral ballad by Middlesbrough's Chris Rea from his no.1 album 'The Road To Hell'. Although the album was released at the end of 1989,the song wasn't released as a single until February 1990,reaching no.24. There doesn't appear to be an official video for it so the next task was to pick from several unofficial videos on youtube. Some of them are a difficult watch so we chose this one which features clips from movies and TV shows.

Posted by: TomboOnBroadway 22nd April 2018, 06:10 PM

Propoganda is a well deserved qualifier, I really enjoy the song. I never thought I would get into a 10 minute song but it is really good cheer.gif

Posted by: King Rollo 22nd April 2018, 10:04 PM

Thanks Tombo. A lot of the credit for that 12 inch version is down to the genius producer Trevor Horn.

Das Testaments Des Mabuse by Propaganda defied all expectations by finishing 5th in the final. Cor Lupus and Holland Oats both predicted the song to finish last while it was at the bottom of Seyetana's betting market on Wednesday. This is our best placing so far in the final beating the 12th place we achieved in our debut contest with Steven Wilson's Routine. The song finished 4th in its semi-final with 102 points . 13 countries voted for it with 7 of them awarding the 12 points maximum. The 5th place finish in the final was with 231 points, just one point ahead of Cor Lupus and two ahead of Singerpurear. As both of these countries just missed out on points from us,it seems we helped our song into the top 5 without knowing it at the time. 21 countries gave us points including 8 maximum scores of 18. BJSC105 - The Storm Before The Calm by Anathema

Anathema are back to represent Rolloland after doing so well in the 100th contest. The Storm Before The Calm is from the same 'Weather Systems' album as Untouchable. This is another epic masterpiece which I really wanted everyone to hear. I don't think it's quite as good as Untouchable but some of you might prefer it.

Posted by: Bré 29th May 2018, 11:12 AM

I came very close to giving another 18 to Anathema, seems like this is an excellent album from the 20 minutes of it I have now heard tongue.gif the progression on this is wonderful, the title is very appropriate.

Posted by: King Rollo 29th May 2018, 11:21 AM

Yes,the 'storm' section is so well done. It needs to be played nice and loud on good speakers. I hope you will listen to the rest of the album on Spotify some time.

Posted by: Jade 29th May 2018, 04:20 PM

Congratulations on the top 20 position Rollo! cheer.gif like I said in my own national thread, it's great that Anathema got that top 20 hit in the end after falling short by just a few positions last time. It felt weird that I wasn't all over 'Untouchable (Parts 1 & 2)' (with 'just' 3 points given to it) when some of the people who have the most similar taste to me were throwing huge points at it, so it's great that I'm absolutely loving this one. It 'only' got 4 points from me in the semi actually, I guess the structure needed a bit of getting used to, but it very quickly vaulted into the podium position area from listen two onwards heart.gif Very close to an 18-point swap on this occasion ohmy.gif thanks for the Shpongle love, great to have a first Rolloland 18 after 'Waves' came so close exactly a year ago!

BJSC106 - Get Off Your High Horse (Big Bold Brassy Mix) by Rollo Goes Camping

It was only a matter a time before Rollo from Faithless was asked to represent Rolloland. Rollo's full name is Rowland Constantine O'Malley Armstrong. His younger sister is Dido who has been a guest singer on many Faithless songs. Her full name is Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O'Malley Armstrong. Before forming Faithless in 1995 with Maxi Jazz and Sister Bliss,Rollo had some chart success on his own. He got to number 26 with 'Let This Be A Prayer' under the name 'Rollo Goes Spiritual' and to number 32 with 'Love,Love,Love - Here I Come' under the name 'Rollo Goes Mystic'. The song by him we have chosen reached number 43 under his other moniker,'Rollo Goes Camping'.

Re-Invention II - Heroes by Peter Gabriel

For this spin-off,we have chosen Peter Gabriel's orchestral version of Heroes by David Bowie. It's from an album of cover versions Peter released in 2010 called 'Scratch By Back',all of them recorded with an orchestra. Among the acts whose songs he covered were Arcade Fire,Elbow and Radiohead. The original plan was for a simultaneous album called 'I'll Scratch Yours' to be released with the 12 acts all covering songs by Peter Gabriel but many of them were slow to record their covers and it didn't come out until 2013 and even then some of the acts had to be replaced like Radiohead who never bothered.

BJSC107 - No Danger by The Delgados

The Delgados were a Scottish band formed in 1994. They are named after the Spanish road cyclist Pedro Delgado. They also named their first two albums after terms used in cycling,'Domestiques' and 'Peloton'. They had nine top 100 singles but none of them charted higher than number 61. They split up in 2005. 'No Danger' was a song we entered for the 90s v 00s spin off but when the draw was made, our 90s song was chosen so we have now entered it into the main contest. It's from the Delgados' 2000 album 'The Great Eastern' which won the Planet Sound album of the year poll and was also nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. When released as a single,it reached number 77.

Despite 5 out of 5 people predicting Rolloland not to qualify,we have once again defied expectations to qualify for the final of BJSC107,meaning our target of 5 qualifications for this year has already been achieved. Thanks to all those who liked our song enough to vote for it. Here is the kids' choir version of the song with dancing nuns as well:

BJSC108 - Close Up by The Art Of Noise

The Art Of Noise were Trevor Horn and his production team of Gary Langan,J J Jeczalik and Anne Dudley. 'Close Up' is one of the remixes of their hit single Close (To The Edit). The Art Of Noise were on the same ZTT label as Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Propaganda. All three groups' singles came out with several remixes, most notably Two Tribes by Frankie which was kept at number 1 for nine weeks by a different version being released each week. We hope 'Close Up' will do as well as 'Das Testaments Des Mabuse' by Propaganda.

In other news,a mystery country has entered 'Annie,Let's Not Wait' by Guillemots for Rolloland in the Masquerade II spinoff but which song have we entered?

Close Up by The Art Of Noise was the first Rolloland entry since BJSC102 to fail to qualify, ending our national record of five consecutive qualifiers. We somehow doubt that record will ever be broken as qualifying with our brand of music is never easy. The song finished 20th in its semi-final with 42 points,4 points away from a qualifying place. Tartford awarded the song their maximum 12 points while Suedeonia gave it 10 points. The four other countries to vote for it were Thelonia 7,Aelandor 6,Jadakissnia 5 and FARC 2. BJSC109 - Whale by Arsenal

Arsenal are a Belgian electronic music band with two permanent members who have been going since 1999. They collaborate with singers and musicians from various countries to produce music from a wide range of genres. As a fan of Arsenal FC,I was intrigued when I saw their name on my list of Spotify recommendations recently. They are named after a World War 2 weapons depository which is next to their studio in Brussels. 'Whale' is a single taken from their sixth album 'In The Rush Of Shaking Shoulders'.

Bang Gang are an Icelandic group formed in 1996 whose only constant member is Baroi Johansson while Lady & Bird is his side project with Keren Ann. Ghost From The Past is the title track from Bang Gang's third album. We have chosen a live version with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra to represent us in the final contest of 2018.

Bang Gang's live version of Ghost From The Past failed to qualify for the final, finishing 23rd in its semi-final with 30 points. Five countries voted for it with a top score of 10 points from Terra Avium. The other countries were Tinnmark (7 points),Seyetana (6),Beaverdonia (5) and Aesthetica (2). It's only the second song we have entered that didn't receive a maximum score from another country. We finish the year with 6 qualifiers from 10 contests which is one more than our target of 5. There is not so much change from last year here as the top 6 countries are the same, but in a different order. Trifoski and Deandria both move up one place while Persephonia drop from 3rd to 6th. The highest new entry is Singerpurear in 13th place. BJSC111 - You Will Make It by Jem featuring Vusi Mahlasela

This is my third favourite song of all time. I didn't want to enter it into the contest until I had completed my top 1000 thread so I'm finally able to enter it now. Jem wrote the song shortly after her friend Proof, from the rap group D12,was murdered. The first verse is loosely about him while the second verse is about another friend of hers who died in the World Trade Centre on 9/11. The song features a contribution from the South African singer Vusi Mahlasela and is from her second album 'Down To Earth'. The poem Jem recites at the end was written by the American poet Mary Frye in 1932. Jem has already made two appearances in the BJSC,representing Kylienips in the sixth contest with 'They' and Hitanya in the ninth contest with '24'. She could therefore be possibly breaking the record for the longest gap between BJSC appearances.

BJSC111 Stats

Jem finished 5th in her semi-final with 84 points. This is Rolloland's second best semi-final placing. Only Propaganda's fourth place finish in the semi of the 104th contest is above it. The Actual Republic Of Bellamia and St Burbia both gave 'You Will Make It' 12 points. In the final, the song languished in 30th place after the finalists' votes but finished 6th in the jury vote, elevating it to a final position of 24th with 153 points from 21 countries. This is Rolloland's sixth best final placing. Once again, the Actual Republic Of Bellamia awarded the song their maximum points. Thanks to all the countries who gave us points.

BJSC112 - One Night Stand (The Long Night And The Samba) by The Aloof

The Aloof were a British dance/electronica group who released four albums in the 90s. 'One Night Stand' is their only top 40 hit, reaching number 30 in 1996. 'The Long Night And The Samba' is one of five versions of the song on the CD single. It is my sixth favourite song of all time. Another version of the song titled 'The Last Stand' (a more subdued instrumental version) appeared on their album 'Sinking' and it was that version that was part of a repeated loop of music played on Radio 1 for several hours on the day that Princess Diana died.

BJSC113 - The Greenway Song by Peter Mylett

I discovered this song by reading my local free newspaper and thought it would be something a bit different to send to the contest. The Greenway is a cycle path which runs from Westport to Achill Sound in County Mayo along the route of the old railway line which was closed in 1937. The track was opened in 2010 and is 26 miles long. On an average summer's day,it is used by about 1000 cyclists and walkers. Since 2010,more cycle tracks have been constructed in other parts of Ireland. Peter Mylett was born in Newport,Mayo but has lived in the UK for the last 30 years.

BJSC113 Stats

The Greenway Song ended up being under-appreciated and finished 29th out of 30 songs in its semi-final. However,it managed to become the first song in the 12 year history of the contest to receive two maximum scores in a semi-final but still finish in the bottom two. Beaverdonia and Cumulonimbia both gave their 12 points to Peter Mylett. Arcodesia awarded 2 points to his song and Seyetana 1 point.

BJSC114 - The Sky's The Limit by Nik Kershaw

The Sky's The Limit is from Nik Kershaw's eighth album 'Ei8ht' which came out in 2012. I have only recently been catching up with his more recent albums on Spotify so this song is quite new to me. He wrote it after a conversation with his nine year old daughter about what she wanted to do when she grew up. It features on the soundtrack to the 2016 film 'Eddie The Eagle'. At 3 minutes 26 seconds long, this is the shortest song we have sent to the main contest (if you count 'Superstar' by Ninet Tayeb as being as long as its youtube video). Nik Kershaw last appeared for New Alba in BJSC3 with 'The Riddle' meaning that he breaks the record for the longest gap between appearances set earlier this year by Jem,also representing Rolloland.

BJSC114 Stats

The Sky's The Limit ended up finishing last in its semi-final with just 12 points, making it the worst ever performance by a Rolloland entry. The top score of 5 points came from Singerpurear while our reliable neighbours Suedeonia gave us 4 points. Arcodesia,East Rukahavian and Quintessa all gave us 1 point. Out of those five countries, only Quintessa qualified for the final so there was much sharing of misery in the green room afterwards amongst the delegates. This is the third time we have had two DNQ's in a row. To avoid having three in a row for the first time,we are placing our faith in a young singer from Sweden.

BJSC115 - Moln by Menke

Menke is a singer/songwriter from Sweden. She also plays many musical instruments such as piano, banjo, cello and vibraphone. 'Moln' is her debut single from 2018. The title translates as 'Clouds'. The song is her interpretation of a poem by the Swedish poet and novelist Karin Boye. It's the first foreign language song entered by Rolloland.

Posted by: King Rollo 17th June 2019, 06:47 PM

Last night,it was announced in Oslol that we have qualified for the final of BJSC115,meaning that we have avoided having three consecutive DNQs (the first time that would have occurred). Menke has justified the faith we had in her to qualify and we are all behind her for Sunday's final. She recently came into the Radio Rollo studios and performed her song while playing the piano. You can see her performance here:

BJSC115 Stats

Moln by Menke finished 11th in its semi-final with 76 points. 12 countries voted for it,including Lotunia who gave it their maximum score of 12 (this was a points swap as we also gave 12 points to their song). In Sunday's final, the song finished in 19th place with 178 points. Lotunia once again voted Moln as their favourite song and so did Fljotavik. Espen gave their 15 points to Rolloland and Seyetana put us third in their vote. A total of 18 countries voted for us. Thanks to all of them. This is the second time a Rolloland entry has finished 19th,the other one was The Storm Before The Calm by Anathema. The two songs share our fourth highest finishing position.

BJSC116 - Feel The Benefit by 10cc

10cc were founded as a group in Stockport in 1972 but had been working together with various projects since 1964. Three of them had a no.2 hit single in 1970 under the name Hotlegs with 'Neanderthal Man'. As 10cc,they had eleven top 10 singles in the 1970s including three number 1s,'Rubber Bullets' (1973),'I'm Not In Love' (1975) and 'Dreadlock Holiday' (1978). 'Feel The Benefit' is taken from their fifth album 'Deceptive Bends',from1977,the first album released after the departure from the group of Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. It's my favourite song by 10cc and is placed at number 8 on my all time songs chart. It's also the oldest song Rolloland has entered into a song contest.

BJSC120 - Der Kommissar by After The Fire

After The Fire were a British prog rock group formed in 1972. By the late 70s,they had switched to a new wave sound. Der Kommissar was recorded in 1982 but by the time it became a hit single the following year, the group had split up. The song only got to number 47 in the UK but it was a big hit in the US,reaching number 5. The original version by Falco, from 1981,was a no.1 single in Austria,France,Germany,Italy,Japan and Spain but didn't chart at all in the UK. Falco would eventually have a no.1 single here with Rock Me Amadeus in 1986. This is the first time Rolloland has entered a cover version into the main contest.

Points received in finals 2017-19

As with the points given league table, the leaders at the end of 2017 regain the top spot. In this case,it's Aelandor moving up from the third place they occupied a year ago. Last year's leaders,Suedeonia, are two points behind in 2nd place. Not voting in BJSC120 has cost them the lead here. They gave 12 points to 'Der Kommissar' in the semi-final so would surely have given it more than 2 points in the final. Terra Avium drop down one place to third,Deandria move up one to 4th while Skall are up four places to 5th. Thanks to all the countries that have given us points this year.

Big Big Train are a progressive rock band formed in Bournemouth in 1990. They have already represented Rolloland in last year's Christmas spin off and they make a swift return with their magnum opus 'East Coast Racer'. It's about the steam train Mallard which broke the world speed record for steam trains, travelling at 126 mph on a straight, downhill stretch of the East Coast Mainline on the 3rd of July 1938. It's from the group's eighth studio album 'English Electric Part Two',released in 2013,and is the longest song so far entered by Rolloland into the main contest.

BJSC124 - One Small Change by Cappabue National School

Cappabue is a small school eleven miles north-east of Bantry in County Cork,Ireland. There are just two teachers and 23 pupils. The children decided to make this video (filmed by a former pupil of the school) after being shocked by the amount of litter they found when they went to help clean up local beaches. In an exclusive interview with Radio Rollo, head teacher Norma Healy said "it made them all question their lifestyle choices and look at how they could become more environmentally sensitive. The school now avoids single-use plastic bottles, for example, and children bring stainless-steel drink containers to school. The children wanted to spread the message to other school children as to how they too could make a difference in their own small way so they teamed up with a local music producer,Garry McCarthy of GMCBeats. Working in groups, the children came up with the entire content of the song themselves. Garry set up a recording desk in the classroom and, under his expert direction,One Small Change was born. We are so proud of the end product,it is being shared extensively. The message the children wanted to spread is really being delivered, which is what the project sought to achieve in the first instance and they are overjoyed that it will now be brought to the attention of the members of the Buzzjack community".

Cappabue are by a long way the youngest act to represent Rolloland and the second one to come from Ireland. 'One Small Change' is also the shortest song we have sent.

You need to remove the '&t=57s' from the link for it to embed correctly (that link also jumps directly to 57 seconds into the video).

I am... intrigued to hear this entry to say the least laugh.gif but while I'm posting in here I will share some belated love for a run of great entries which I didn't comment on in here yet, particularly Mostly Autumn (still very disappointed at how badly this did), Tides From Nebula and MODERNS which all made it into my personal chart. <3 Big Big Train was a pretty decent entry as well (got a few points from me in the semi) albeit not the best of your lengthy picks.

BJSC125 - Better Friend by Haarm

Haarm were formed in Liverpool in 2016. 'Better Friend' is part of an EP released in 2018. It's about a friend of band member Chris Macintosh who took his own life a few years previously. If you watch the video and like the song, please make sure you listen to the longer version on the Spotify playlist which is almost two minutes longer with an extended string section and a third chorus. I chose the shorter youtube clip as the song has a video directed by the film director Daniel Fitzsimmons featuring dancers who were studying at Edge Hill University.

Younger Brother are a British duo, Simon Posford and Benji Vaughan. They have been releasing music since 2003. Posford is also part of Shpongle who we gave our 18 points to when they represented Jadakissnia in the final of BJSC105. 'Shine' is from their third album, 'Vaccine', released in 2011.

In other news,we recently finished 2nd in the fifth Worldvision spin-off. We were allocated Israel and entered 'Becoming Insane' by Infected Mushroom. This is the highest finishing position for Rolloland in any song contest.

They have appeared once before, representing Ingermanlandia in BJSC48 and are the first Australian act entered by Rolloland. Kiko is taken from their eighth album,Anastasis. BJSC128 - Start Again by 4 Strings & Susanne Teutenberg

I was thinking of entering this song into the last Club Bizarre contest (the theme was vocals) but I thought it might be too obvious it was me as I have already entered 4 Strings into the first Club Bizarre (trance) and also Worldvision III. The Dutch duo have already appeared three times in the main contest, representing Ben's Sanctuary,Cascadia and Danaelanda. Their best finish so far is 13th place for Danaelanda in BJSC61. German singer Susanne Teutenberg has been used by 4 Strings as a regular vocalist over the years. 'Start Again' is a single from 2020.

nice to see them back again anyhow. It did come up on my radar being a 4 Strings song but I only gave it a few plays and kinda forgot about it so hopefully it grows on me and I can count it as a discovery.
I recommend All Through The Night and A Brand New Day released last year also with the same vocalist. if you haven’t heard those already. both made my personal top 40.

Chelsea Jade (Metcalf) has also made her way to America, via South Africa and New Zealand, and is making her debut in the contest. This collaboration is from 2018. I planned to enter it earlier in the year but after Jai Wolf won the April edition of Club Bizarre, I decided to sit on it for a while to avoid jumping on the bandwagon.

Many of the countries listed a year ago as having never given us points have now done so. The only active country that's been entering for a few years but is still resisting the charms of Rollo music is Ultraviolenceland. Pupok and Unovia have also not given us any points but they both seem to be on hiatus at the moment.

BJSC131 - Let's All Pray For This World (UNKLE Reconstruction) by Perry Farrell

Perry Farrell is best known as the lead singer of the American alternative rock band Jane's Addiction. He has also been part of the groups Porno For Pyros and Satellite Party. His stage name is a play on the word 'peripheral'. 'Let's All Pray For This World' is a song from his 2019 solo album 'Kind Heaven' but we are entering a 2020 remix by UNKLE who have already represented Rolloland with one of their own songs in BJSC118.

BJSC132 - I Hold You by Clann

Clann is the Canadian producer Sebastian McKinnon. 'I Hold You' is from his 2017 album, 'Seelie', and features vocals from another Canadian, Charlotte Loseth, who records her own music under the name Sea Oleena. Sebastian is also a film maker and is currently making a feature film which will use music from the album but for the moment the only video we can offer to illustrate the song is this unofficial one featuring Icelandic landscapes.

BJSC133 - Diamond Veins by French 79 featuring Sarah Rebecca

French 79 is the project of Simon Henner who is from Marseille. This is his second appearance in the BJSC, having finished 27th in the 114th contest, representing Quintessa. 'Diamond Veins' is from French 79's first album, 'Olympic', released in 2016 and features vocals by the American singer Sarah Rebecca who is making her debut in the contest.

BJSC134 - Moon (And It Went Like) by Kid Francescoli

Kid Francescoli is the project of Mathieu Hocine who, like our entrant from the last contest, is from Marseille. It was not our intention to choose two artists who knew each other in consecutive contests but our original entry by Steven Wilson was vetoed and as we are trying to break our national record for consecutive qualifiers, we thought that this was the most likely out of the potentials that we have at the moment to do that. Moon (And It Went Like) is from Kid Francescoli's second album 'Play Me Again', released in 2017, and features vocals by the American singer Julia Minkin.

BJSC135 - Modern Fears (Pilotpriest Come True Version) by Electric Youth

Electric Youth are a Canadian duo, Bronwyn Griffin and Austin Garrick, who came together musically in 2011 but were already a couple well before that. This is their third BJSC appearance, having represented Palmyra in the 39th contest (finishing 11th) and Numayania in the 53rd contest (failing to qualify for the final). Both of those appearances were as the featured act. This is the second time this year we have entered a Canadian song from a film but unlike the Clann song, this time the film has been completed and released. It's called 'Come True' and the video features scenes from it with Electric Youth also appearing as silhouettes on monitor screens. 'Modern Fears' first appeared as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of Electric Youth's 2014 album 'Innerworld'. The song we are entering is a remixed version from this year with a lusher, more cinematic sound to it to suit the film it features in. Pilotpriest is the alias of Anthony Scott Burns who also wrote and directed the film.

BJSC136 - Run Run Run by Yeah But No

I don't know much about Yeah But No. A google search just brings up Vicky Pollard. I can tell you that they are are a duo made up of Douglas Greed and Fabian Kuss and that they are based in Berlin so I'm assuming that they are German. 'Run Run Run' is taken from their second album 'Demons' released in 2019.

BJSC137 - Monsters by All India Radio

All India Radio are an Australian group led by their only constant member, Martin Kennedy. They were formed in 1998 and have released 26 albums. 'Monsters' is taken from their 17th album, 'Space', released in 2018. Yes, that's right, they have already put out another nine albums since then! It features vocals from Leona Gray who also wrote the lyrics. She does not appear in the video. The woman who does is the model and actress, Annaliese McGuire.

BJSC138 - Supper's Ready by Genesis

Supper's Ready is taken from Genesis' fourth album, 'Foxtrot', released in 1972 while Peter Gabriel was their lead singer. It's the longest and oldest song that Rolloland has entered into the BJSC. If you were following my all time top 1000 songs countdown, you might remember that Supper's Ready was placed as high as number 2. Genesis are currently on their final tour and are set to have a top 10 album on Friday with 'The Last Domino', a collection of their most popular songs.

BJSC139 - D7-D5 by Blanck Mass

Blanck Mass is the solo project of Benjamin John Power who was previously part of an electonic music duo called f*** Buttons. He is making his second appearance in the BJSC, having finished in 10th place for Trifoski a year ago. D7-D5 was released as a single in 2016. Rolloland has never had three DNQ's in a row so we are hoping that this entry will have enough support to qualify for the final.

Posted by: Bré 22nd October 2021, 08:30 PM

I'm still a little sad that All India Radio DNQed (especially as it would have been in if we'd changed the 20 qualifiers per semi rule a couple of months earlier but ah well) - I'm really liking this new single from them as well so thank you for the artist discovery!

'D7-D5' is great as well of course, thinking and hoping it should do quite well.

BJSC140 - Orphan Girl by Nicola O'Haire

Nicola O'Haire is from Ballinrobe in County Mayo and Orphan Girl is her debut single. She is the third Irish act to represent Rolloland. After its release last month, the single shot to number 1 on the Irish iTunes chart. The song was written in 2012 by Brendan Graham who has written two Eurovision Song Contest winners as well as 'You Raise Me Up'. Ireland's Great Famine lasted from 1845 - 1852. About 1 million people died with another million emigrating. Earl Grey, the British Secretary of State for the Colonies, came up with an idea to relocate orphan girls from overcrowded Irish workhouses to the other side of the world where they would help to settle the new Australian colony, making up for a shortage of serving staff. Over 4000 girls made the arduous journey. It is estimated that today, up to 2 million Australians owe their heritage to these orphan girls. This song is the story of one of them.

As I discussed at the close of yesterday’s listenthrough, she sounds like I imagine Susan Boyle sounded as a teenager.

That thought had not occurred to me. I do like the way she enunciates every word of the lyrics.

BJSC141 - Fab Tool by Carpenter Brut featuring David Eugene Edwards

Carpenter Brut is a darksynth artist from Poitiers, France. His real name is Franck Hueso. He has already represented Summericia in BJSC93 which was the contest just before Rolloland made its first appearance. He finished 22nd with his song 'Turbo Killer'. 'Fab Tool' is a single from 2020 and features vocals from the American David Eugene Edwards who also contributed to the lyrics. He is the lead singer, songwriter and musician from the American alternative country band Wovenhand.

BJSC142 - Proper Jack Froster by Big Big Train

Bournemouth band Big Big Train are representing Rolloland for the second time in the main contest. They previously appeared in the 122nd edition where they failed to qualify from their semi-final. 'Proper Jack Froster' is from their 14th album 'Welcome To The Planet' which came out less than a month ago although it had already been released as a single in December. The song was written by bass guitarist Greg Spawton and is about his childhood growing up in the Midlands in the 70s. It comes with this wonderful animated video. Lead vocals here are by David Longdon who died in an accident after the album was completed. Big Big Train's manager recently announced that after speaking to David's family, they have decided to carry on as a group.

Posted by: Ma Rollion 5th March 2022, 11:57 AM

Big Big Train have qualified for the final! Thanks to all those who voted for the song. Here is a reaction to the song from my favourite youtuber Doug Helvering. He's a music teacher and classical composer and does a lot of these videos, listening to classic rock and prog rock songs that he hasn't heard before and commenting on them.

BJSC143 - Never Let Me Down Again by Depeche Mode

This month Rolloland is celebrating its 50th anniversary so we are sending one of our favourite groups, Depeche Mode. Never Let Me Down Again is taken from their sixth album, Music For The Masses, released in 1987. The single reached number 22 in the UK. The song is one of just a few of the group's 80s songs that they still play live in concert, usually being kept back for the encore performance and extended to about double the length of the single version.

Posted by: awardinary 25th March 2022, 08:30 PM

I remember seeing the “Singles” album in shops when I was a child and thought that it looked like something I should check out one day, and whilst I never owned it, I have come to hear and become familiar with many releases by Depeche Mode over the years. Can’t say I was familiar with the one you have entered, but I listened yesterday and it felt somewhat nostalgic, so I was glad to hear it! Great anniversary choice of artist! smile.gif

Posted by: King Rollo 25th March 2022, 11:58 PM

I certainly prefer the longer version myself but I thought the shorter version would be more likely to pick up points.

BJSC144 - Liar by Envy Of None

Envy Of None are a Canadian/American band formed by the former Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson. Liar was released as their debut single in January and is one of the tracks from their first album which came out a few weeks ago. With lead vocals coming from the 25 year old Maiah Wynne, the music of Envy Of None is far removed from the heavy rock sound you might associate with Rush. With a length of just 3 minutes 12 seconds, Liar is the shortest song that Rolloland has sent to the main contest.

BJSC 145 - Then Came The Wave by AtomA

AtomA are a Swedish band formed in 2010. After releasing one album in 2012, the group took a break for studies and various other activities but they have now returned to the music business. Then Came The Wave is a single from last year.

BJSC 146 - We Are The Same by Archive

Archive are British group who have been going for 28 years. While being popular across Europe, they continue to go under the radar in their own country. This is their second appearance for Rolloland, they finished 30th in BJSC99 with 'Bullets'. I have also entered a song by them into the Unknown Pleasures contest. Both of those songs had a male lead vocal so this time I have chosen one with a female vocal. Holly Martin has been part of the group since 2012 and she sings this one. 'We Are The Same' is taken from their twelfth studio album 'Call To Arms & Angels' which was released earlier this year.

BJSC147 - Drop Me Down by Mikko Joensuu

Mikko Joensuu is a singer, songwriter and musician from Finland. As he won Unknown Pleasures for me last year with 'There Used To Be A Darkness', I thought he deserved a crack at the main song contest. 'Drop Me Down' is from the same album, 'Amen 2', released in 2016. The song comes with a 360° video. You can play about with it by moving your cursor from left to right and up and down but please do not let this distract you from listening to the song.

BJSC148 - I Would Sing Along by Karen Peris

Karen Peris is the lead singer and main songwriter of the American alternative rock band The Innocence Mission who were formed in 1986. Her husband Don is also in the group. 'I Would Sing Along' is taken from her second solo album, 'A Song Is Way Above the Lawn', released in 2021. The song features her two children, Drew and Anna, on violin and viola respectively.

BJSC149 - Alone & Unafraid by ELIZA

ELIZA used to be known as Eliza Doolittle, a fact I was unaware of when I stumbled upon this song a couple of months ago. I only found out just before I entered it. She has three top 40 singles to her name plus one with Disclosure and a number 1 single as part of the Justice Collective. Alone & Unafraid is a single taken from her 2018 album 'A Real Romantic'.

BJSC150 - Love You To Bits (Bit 1) by No-Man

No-Man are an English duo who go way back to 1987 when they were known as No Man Is An Island (Except The Isle of Man). That's surely one of the best ever band names but it was shortened to No-Man from 1990 onwards. The two members are Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson. The latter needs no introduction to BJSC regulars, having represented Rolloland in our debut contest and also finishing in 2nd place for Terra Avium in the same year. With Steven being busy with Porcupine Tree and solo work, No-Man have only released seven albums, the latest being 2019's 'Love You To Bits'. The album is basically one song with Love You To Bits, Bits 1 to 5 on Side 1 and Love You To Pieces, Pieces 1 to 5 on Side 2. We are entering Bit 1 to this contest.

Posted by: Dr. Bré 29th November 2022, 11:46 PM

Oh I didn't realise this was a Steven Wilson project, that was a research fail from me whoops (though I highly doubt it'd make it veto worthy anyway so no worries - does definitely make me look forward to hearing it more though!)

Posted by: King Rollo 29th November 2022, 11:54 PM

BJSC151 - I Won't Back Down by Hybrid

Hybrid are a married duo from Wales, Mike and Charlotte Truman. They have appeared in the contest once before, finishing in 4th place for Tartford with Finished Symphony in BJSC113. I Won't Back Down is the final track on their 2018 album, Light Of The Fearless. With accompaniment from the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, it's a cover version of a song by Tom Petty from his 1989 album, Full Moon Fever. He co-wrote the song with Rolloland icon Jeff Lynne.

BJSC152 - Blood Moon by Bokka

Bokka are a Polish group shrouded in mystery. They do not appear in their music videos and always wear masks on stage or in publicity photos. The members have not even revealed their names. Blood Moon is the title track from their fourth album, released in 2022.

Prefab Sprout are a group formed in County Durham in 1978. They had six top 40 singles from 1985 to 1997 and nine top 40 albums. If You Don't Love Me was one of the new songs on their compilation album 'A Life of Surprises: The Best of Prefab Sprout' from 1992. It was released as a single and reached number 33. A cover version of the song was recorded by Kylie Minogue in 1994.

BJSC154 - Pray For Me I Don't Fit In by Melt Yourself Down

Melt Yourself Down are a London band formed in 2012. Their music covers a wide range of genres such as afrobeat, punk, jazz and funk. This is their second BJSC appearance. They previously represented Trifoski seven years ago, failing to qualify for the final. Pray For Me I Don't Fit In is the title track taken from their fourth album which was released in 2022.

BJSC155 - Macho City by The Steve Miller Band

The Steve Miller Band are an American group formed in San Francisco in 1966. In the UK, they are best known for their 1973 single 'The Joker' which reached number 1 in 1990 after being used in a Levi's TV commercial. They also reached number 2 on the singles chart in 1982 with 'Abracadabra'. Macho City is taken from their eleventh studio album 'Circle Of Love', released in 1981. I have never heard the whole album or any of the groups other albums. I know the song from it being played a few times on Annie Nightingale's Radio 1 request show in 1983. It became a bit of a cult song for the listeners at the time. Forty years later, I hope the same thing will happen with the Buzzjack audience.

The Lotus Eaters were formed in Liverpool in 1982. 'The First Picture Of You' was their debut single, released in July 1983. It reached number 15 on the UK singles chart. The video was filmed in Walberswick on the Suffolk coast. Subsequent singles failed to reach the top 40 and the band split up in 1985. They reformed in 2001.

BJSC159 - Gaza by Marillion

Five years after they last represented Rolloland, Marillion are back with the song 'Gaza' from their 2012 album 'Sounds That Can't Be Made' which has become very relevant to the current situation in the Middle East. Its lyrics take the perspective of a boy growing up in the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip. In an interview with Radio Rollo in 2012, singer and lyricist Steve Hogarth said this about the song:

"This is a song for the people – especially the children – of Gaza. It was written after many conversations with ordinary Palestinians living in the refugee camps of Gaza and the West Bank. I spoke also to Israelis, to NGO workers, to a diplomat unofficially working in Jerusalem, and took their perspectives into account whilst writing the lyric. It is not my/our intention to smear the Jewish faith or people – we know many Jews are deeply critical of the current situation – and nothing here is intended to show sympathy for acts of violence, whatever the motivation, but simply to ponder upon where desperation inevitably leads."

For anyone who is interested, these are the full lyrics to the song:

When I was young it all seemed like a game
Living here brought no sense of shame
But now I'm older I've come to understand
Once we had houses
Once we had land
They rained down bullets on us as our homes collapsed
We lay beneath the rubble terrified

Hoping, dare we dream?
We gave up waiting
For us, to dream is still a dream

When I woke up, the house was broken stones
We suddenly had nothing
And nothing's changed

We live, eight people, in this overcrowded heat
Factory-farmed animals living in our own sweat
Living like this is all my baby brother ever knew
The world does nothing, what can we do?

We will kick the ball
We will skip the rope
We will play outside, be careful
We will paint and draw, we will say our prayers

Outside the pitiless sun bleaches the broken streets
The darkness drops in the evening like an iron door
The men play cards under torchlight
The women stay inside
Hell can erupt in a moment day or night

You ask for trouble if you stray too close to the wall
My father died feeding the birds
Mum goes in front of me to check for soldiers

For every hot-head stone ten come back
For every hot-head stone a hundred come back
For every rocket fired the drones come back

For thirteen years the roads have all been closed
We're isolated, we're denied medical supplies
Fuel and work are scarce, they build houses on our farms
The old men weep, the young men take up arms

We're packed like chickens in this town of block cement
I get headache from the diesel, when it rains, the sewers too
I had no idea what martyrdom meant
Until my older brother, my older brother
I'm sorry I can't continue

You sow the wind, you reap the whirlwind, it is said
When people know they have no future
Can we blame them if we cannot tame them?
And when their hopes and dreams are broken
And they feel they might as well be dead
As they go, will we forgive them
If they take us with them?

Stay close
Stay home
Stay calm
Have faith

With the love of our family we can rise above anything
Someday surely someone must help us
With the love of our family we can rise above anything
Someday surely someone must help us
Even now we will go to school
Even now we will dream to dream
Someday surely someone must help us

Nothing's ever simple, that's for sure
There are grieving mothers on both sides of the wire
And everyone deserves a chance to feel the future just might be bright
But any way you look at it, whichever point of view
For us to have to live like this
It just ain't right
It just ain't right
It just ain't right

We all want peace and freedom that's for sure
But peace won't come from standing on our necks
Everyone deserves a chance to feel the future just might be bright
But any way you look at this, whichever point of view
For us to have to live like this
It just ain't right
It just ain't right
It just ain't right

It's like a nightmare rose up slouching towards Bethlehem
Like a nightmare rose up from this small strip of land
Slouching towards Bethlehem

It's like a nightmare rose up from this small strip of land
Slouching towards Bethlehem

It's like a nightmare rose up from this small strip of land
Slouching towards Bethlehem

It's like a nightmare rose up from this small strip of land
Slouching towards Bethlehem

It's like a nightmare rose up, like a nightmare rose up
Slouching towards Bethlehem

I can't know what twist of history did this to me
It's like a nightmare

It's like a nightmare (With the love of our family)
(We can rise above everything)
Towards Bethlehem (Some day surely someone must help us)

Someday surely someone must help us

Steve Hackett was the lead guitarist in Genesis from 1971 to 1977. 'Hoping Love Will Last' is taken from his second solo album 'Please Don't Touch!' which was released in 1978. It features vocals from the American singer Randy Crawford who went on to have four UK hit singles including 'One Day I'll Fly Away' (no.2 in 1980) and 'Almaz' (no.4 in 1986). She also sang lead vocal on 'Street Life', a top five single for The Crusaders in 1979, so she was relatively unknown when Steve Hackett's album came out.
