Popular or I Can should have walked it in 2011. Shame Blue turned up with strained vocals and awful outfits. I guess it was never going to be major jury fodder though regardless.
I love Everybody Happy memories! I Wanna was very disappointing though, especially as mentioned, the rest of the top five was so good that year. Weren't Germany the bookies favourite that year though (I'm sure Malta weren't), and ended up outside the top 20, oops. |

16th // Average Score 6.69 Sweden 1999 Take Me To Your Heaven Charlotte Nilsson Highest Score: 9 (gooddelta, Campbell, nickthenoodle) Lowest Score: 3 (Jason, NocheLuna) 20 years ago, Sweden were celebrating their fourth Eurovision victory, after Charlotte Nilsson (now Perrelli) pipped Iceland's Selma to the post in Jerusalem. 'Take Me To Your Heaven' is a classic case of Euro schlager and not in any way a total ABBA rip-off. It was the first time since 1975 that the winning song was not performed in the countries own language, since the rule was relaxed that year. The song managed to chart in the UK at #20, despite being released almost a month after the contest. 1999 is a vintage year for me, so many amazing songs, with this included, although Iceland or Croatia would've been more preferable for me as a winner (whilst I also preferred Germany's entry, 'Reise Nach Jerusalem' would've been a strange winner in retrospect) but 'Take Me To Your Heaven' is a superb song and an excellent, if not classic, winner. 15th // Average Score 6.78 Ukraine 2016 1944 Jamala Highest Score: 11 (AdamAloud, NocheLuna, alby) Lowest Score: 0 (Jason, Theonix) What a year 2016 was for Eurovision. Firstly it was the best of this decade in terms of overall song quality and show production. Secondly, for the first time in about 84 years the voting system was changed and it gave us one of the most exciting finishes ever. After Australia stormed the jury vote it seemed a clean sweep for Dami Im. Enter Jamala. Sergey Lazarev frm Russia's televote victory wasn't enough to make up for a poorer jury score and Ukraine came through to snatch at the last minute! I know this is a marmite entry (Iz when can I replace Jack and Lex with my fellow Jamala stans alby and NocheLuna?) and I know a lot of people are pissed at this beating Australia. For me this is near perfection when it comes to a Eurovision entry. The anguish, anger and heartache that comes through from Jamala's vocal. The frankly quite epic staging portraying the deaths of the many victims to the rebirth and hope in the tree with the colours of the Ukrainian flag. 2016 had many great songs that were deserving winners. But for me, the most deserving song did win. |

It wasn't until after the contest that I really *got* it. Everyone watching en masse where I was, was shocked and disappointed when Ukraine won, particularly given Dami Im was the clear favourite in the venue. In the following days I kept watching and re-watching "1944" live and it really is actually magical, and very deserving of the victory. I love everything Adam said about it; I love the production as well. It's a cool track. It may rise further towards the top of the decade for me as time goes by.

Best winner of the decade, no contest, who cares what it beat. That production, the dark, swirling, building, the overbearance of the songs meaning, and how much it obviously means to Jamala, it's a greatly written song elevated to legendary level by having the right singer, the right moment for it. Very proud of Eurovision for doing that.
the tatar lyrics get me every time <3 |

I'm the same in the sense that I learned to love "1944" a lot once I got over being butthurt that Dami Im didn't win. It's really good and deserves higher than 15th place here but at least it's a positive score.
Regarding "Take My To Your Heaven" it's the clear weakest link in this Top 16 and while I do enjoy it I feel like both Iceland and Croatia would have made much better winners in 1999 than this. |

Surprised “Take Me To Your Heaven” didn’t get a slightly higher average as Charlotte seems like such a highly regarded name around these parts.
Also I totally didn’t vote in this thing in protest at -1 scores not being allowed x I find “1944” totally unlistenable but at the same time I don’t begrudge it as a winner too much because I was very anti-“You Are The Only One” too (it bangs on a night out but I found it too desperate and dated to go all the way) so I loved Ukraine beating Russia in such a fashion Popular or I Can should have walked it in 2011. Shame Blue turned up with strained vocals and awful outfits. I guess it was never going to be major jury fodder though regardless. I didn’t see a problem with their outfits but I think it’s never a good idea when acts have their own faces up on screens, that’s the downfall of the performance for me. |

Surprised “Take Me To Your Heaven” didn’t get a slightly higher average as Charlotte seems like such a highly regarded name around these parts. To me Charlotte's popularity has always felt more like it's got to do with "Hero" rather than "TMTYH", a song that is FAR superior to her winning entry. |

I think that’s a fair point and tbh I’m not surprised at any of the songs that have beaten her in the results because it’s a really strong list overall but I wasn’t expecting an average below a 7. I see it as a 7.5/10 sort of song and I thought it would’ve been helped by the extra attention drawn to it this year (what with it winning the last time Israel hosted and it being included in the “Diva To Diva” performance)

Everything Charlotte Perrelli has ever touched is at least 10/10 material.*
*Ok I realise I didn't give TMTYH 10 but still! A QUEEN! |

Take Me To Your Heaven was a great winner and is a very uplifting song.
That said, Iceland and Croatia would have also made worthy winners in 1999 but Take Me To Your Heaven has aged much better than those tracks. 1999 was a strong year but the year i associate with Cyprus getting an awful score for a good song although i must concede her vocal let her down on the night. Charlottes Hero entry for Sweden in 2008 was also a wonderful song and i was shocked by its low placing in the final. This post has been edited by pippa: 4th June 2019, 03:27 PM |
