Apparently Xenomania have lots of unheard Sats materials.

I hope some will leak eventually. Maybe in 2060, but I'll be waiting till then.

Mollie and Vanessa are like opposites, I'm sure Vanessa said she believed in something after she saw a fortune teller on Sats 24/7. Poor Mollie laugh.gif

I always found Anywhere With You a highlight of Living For The Weekend, which a lot of people didn't agree with (reject Katy Perry demo my a***). Almost on a million streams on Spotify, far ahead of other album tracks! Winning! #TasteAlwaysWins. laugh.gif

Imagine the royalties (or lack of) they'll get for those streams! laugh.gif

I've never seen it compared to a Katy Perry demo but it definitely is one of the tracks I don't find a highlight!

I remember people saying this, I think it was because Katy's "Prism" was literally out the week after LFTW and "International Smile" bears similarities.

I was looking into the Little Mix forum and seeing the impact 'Black Magic' had on being the lead single and how it helped Little Mix get over a rather disappointing era in Salute and it made me think how huge 'Wordshaker' could have been had 'Ego' been the lead single and not 'Forever Is Over' followed by 'One Shot' and 'Here Standing'.

Then, imagine had 'Higher' been the lead single from 'Headlines', I honestly feel like this could have been a SMASH around Europe and that's not me just being deluded, I honestly think if the label had more faith in them at the start of the 'Headlines' era then they could have pushed 'Higher' around Europe. I remember they had meetings in Germany and they were going to release 'Higher' but moved onto 'Notorious' instead what got no promotion worldwide although it's opening sales is actually incredible omg.

The more I look into 'Living For The Weekend', it never really had a big budget, did it? I feel like for working with E the budget would have been bigger and maybe that's why they got 'Lease Your Love' which was refused by almost everyone. 'What About Us' not being promoted around Europe / Australia was also a huge, huge, huge mistake. It got to #44 in Germany without ANY promotion and #27 in New Zealand.

The release of 'Not Giving Up' killed them as they managed to recover from 'Gentleman' a little bit by 'Disco Love' going top five.

Posted by: SeanmanjiGrey 10th October 2017, 06:06 PM

Forever Is Over should not have been the single the album was released off. For a single that hit number two and is nearly certified single, I can only fault it for where it came in the release pattern. FIO -> Ego -> Album release -> Wordshaker/One Shot/Denial/other, in whichever combination for post-album.

Una has shared that the girls have discussed the possibility of a reunion and will most likely come back together in "two years." She said a few of the girls are very keen on it, herself included. You know Vanessa is not one of them.

I think it will be a 3(Mollie, Una and Frankie)-2 (Rochelle and Vanessa) For-against split.

Frankie and Rochelle are interchangeable from for and against.

Posted by: missingyou 24th October 2017, 10:26 AM

i could see a JLS/Saturdays reunion tour in the future actually.

But yeah Nessa can jog on, Rochelle can do all her parts and actually hit the notes

I think it'll be more of a case that Vanessa will realise she needs the group and come back round to the topic of a reunion.

I'm rewatching Chasing The Saturdays this weekend and forgot how many great moments there are. Recording Not Giving Up, Mollie's awkward date with Calvin, the LA County Fair and Vanessa eating fried butter, random cameo from The Wanted. The banter between Mollie and Vanessa/Frankie/Rochelle is everything. Ben and his injury got so much attention though laugh.gif

72nd is impressive as I almost never hear them on there anymore.

Higher not being Top 10 and My Heart Takes Over being there doesn't seem right.

Posted by: TheGrinch 8th January 2019, 09:37 PM

Higher was their most played song on radio 1 last year with 8 plays followed by UP with 7

Posted by: (Zach) 9th January 2019, 11:41 PM

Not sure where that list was pulled from but maybe Higher is registered under "The Saturdays & Flo Rida" and not under The Saturdays.

Posted by: (Zach) 24th March 2019, 04:14 AM

Just thinking about how close the girls got to breaking through outside the UK and wondering what could've been had they not gotten baby fever. What About Us was gaining traction in Germany and did decently well in New Zealand, they were doing that France promo, WAU almost broke the Top 100 on US iTunes...and then it all came to a screeching halt. They were fortunate to get spots on shows like Jimmy Kimmel (how they pulled that off I'm not sure) so I don't know what it was that truly ended their international efforts. Did the song underperform in other markets considering the amount of promo so they decided to pull the plug? Or was it really due to Rochelle's pregnancy?

On a somewhat related note, even Disco Love saw some international success that showed its potential. It charted in the most countries only behind WAU. Getting that Hungarian smash.

Posted by: Wall 24th March 2019, 05:26 AM

What About us got serviced to radio too late. I remember they were #101 on USA iTunes before their today performance and their performance got interrupted with a Obama message, legit typical.

They were also going to support Justin bieber in America but couldn’t due to Rochelle, that legit would have been so big for their status and following and they probably would have lasted a bit longer and got better material in the future and a much bigger following sad.gif

Despite having a positive outlook on the future of her partner's group, the What About Us hitmaker ruled out a comeback with The Saturdays.

So she’s hoping for Marvin and JLS to reunite but ruled out the Saturdays ever doing so because the music industry has “changed”? huh.gif

Least favourite track you have wrote?
I’ve done so many songs I don’t think have aged well! One I always think of is Higher by The Saturdays. The opening lyric - “I’m doing nothing, ‘cause then at least I’m doing nothing wrong” - makes no sense and the song is just like, what? It’s fun to listen to the old stuff and see the progression. If they did come back, I don’t see them genuinely wanting a hit anyway, it would probably be a small tour and hopefully a couple of extra tracks just for the fans.

That’s just being honest, but I love the song - the way people received it made me not like it. It just didn’t connect!”

Yeh I don't know why so many people don't like it, okay it's rather non-sensical (not a real word, I am aware), but it's a bop and it was one of the songs that made me fall in love with them.

Nonsensical actually is a word!

I love If This Is Love, it's so underrated. I have so many great memories from around the time it was released, so that makes it an extra special song for me! I saw them four times at Girls Aloud's tour, and I also went to see The Saturdays perform in a few clubs / shopping centres, with a bunch of friends who also liked them. It was a lot of fun travelling around the country and supporting them, and I even met them a few times! wub.gif I feel a bit sad.gif that it was 12 years ago, I can't quite believe it!

Good to see that their team is maintaining their social media presence even though they're no longer active, and that they're making changes to their back catalogue on download/streaming sites! Totally unexpected, but I appreciate it. I wish Girls Aloud would get the same treatment.

It was high time that all of The Saturdays' B Sides were available to stream, and I like that their singles are being freshened up too. Some of the tags for the older singles are a bit strange (for instance Issues, Just Can't Get Enough and Work singles are tagged as "All Other BPs", whatever that means!). Other singles have multiple different versions spread out in different releases instead of all being compiled together, so hopefully those will be combined.

How this ended up being JUST A B SIDE. It’s better than most of their album tracks. ‘I could go on and on with reason I should stay, I could go on and on with reason I should go away ‘ is iconic.

Bring them back, I’ve had 2 bottles of wine and I miss them.

Woah! That Sticky Club Remix is quite something! ohmy.gif

I'm assuming these single rereleases are in attempt to push for few more Certs.

I should imagine What About Us is on the cusp on Platinum, If This Is Love and Work could be close to Silver, next for Gold would be Just Can't Get Enough, unless Issues overtook, it picked up quite a lot of sales when Julia Michael's song was in the charts. Who knows, would be interesting to have an update.

These are the estimates by Shireblogger on Haven, up to the end of 2019:

QUOTE
1. Saturdays ft Sean Paul -- What About Us :: 580k
2. Saturdays ft Flo Rida -- Higher :: 505k
3. Saturdays -- Ego :: 440k
4. Saturdays -- Up :: 400k
5. Saturdays -- Just Can't Get Enough :: 330k
6. Saturdays -- Issues :: 320k
7. Saturdays -- All Fired Up :: 300k
8. Saturdays -- Missing You :: 275k
9. Saturdays -- Notorious :: 240k
10. Saturdays -- Disco Love :: 215k
11. Saturdays -- Forever Is Over :: 210k
12. Saturdays -- If This Is Love :: 150k
13. Saturdays -- Work :: 150k
14. Saturdays -- 30 Days :: 120k

'What About Us' was on 554k in May 2019 and 584k in April 2020, so is shifting ~700 a week. Should be Platinum around October time.

So Higher might get platinum as well in a few years with how much it's streamed. Honestly I can't see any more certifications for a while though sad.gif Maybe one of Work/If This is Love could go silver but they don't do great on streaming so I can't see where that 50k is gonna come from. Love those sales stats!

So funny seeing a #10 and #9 peakers being their second and third biggest sellers overall. They often used to get long running hits with their second singles whilst their leads peaked higher typically but sold less iirc.

Thanks for this update, interesting. I had no idea they had 500k sellers! Looking back, they actually did very very well. Sure they were no Girls Aloud or Sugababes in (album) sales, but they had a very good run. Especially when so many other girl groups that came around the same time struggled to even get one hit single.

Posted by: JulianNial 20th May 2020, 05:04 PM

I'm convinced if they decided to wait a couple more months, released Wordshaker off the back of Ego and managed to record a couple of the Headlines! tracks replaced the couple of duds, pushed One Shot as a single, then re-released the album as a Deluxe version in the Summer (Maybe with Higher as the re-release single)... they would have 2 Platinum albums. 'On Your Radar' being released in December was also a choice.

Posted by: StupidLove 21st May 2020, 01:00 PM

I agree, they have so many missed single opportunities it's crazy.

Wordshaker: Lose Control, One Shot

On Your Radar: Faster, Get Ready Get Set, Last Call

LFTW: Leave A Light On

GH: 808

I know they weren't huge touring artists or album sellers, but they sold quite well for singles and should've pushed for more.

Omg all those, and Here Standing, The Way You Watch Me and Anywhere with you too. I get why they had some low peaks because OYR, Wordshaker and Chasing Lights were released in Q4 but I don't get why they never sold albums? They were pretty well known and had hit singles but their album sales are so bad, I can't believe a masterpiece like On Your Radar was released in Q4 and sold 60k sad.gif

I could have seen them pushing 'Lose Control', It was great on tour! As cheesy as it is.

On Your Radar could have easily been that era where they pretty much released everything but their management wimped out after 'MHTO' under-performed. The plan was to record a video for 'The Way You Watch Me' with the 'Solo Version' that ended up as B-Side on '30 Days', but due to strong fan backlash, the plans were scrapped and instead of thinking "Let's do Faster/GRGS/Last Call/White Lies" instead they rushed onto '30 Days' before a quite awkwardly long gap until 'What About Us'. They could have saved '30 Days' for a re-release also and voila, OYR would have been at least Gold by now.

As far as LFTW was concerned, I'm pretty confident if 'Not Giving Up' performed better they probably would have pushed 'Leave A Light On' too, in fact they could have squeezed it's release between 'Disco Love' and 'NGU' seeing as there was yet another 6 month + gap between singles during the same album campaign. Bizarre. OR even better, 'NGU/Wildfire' replaces 'Gentleman', 'Leave A Light On' is single 3 and 'Disco Love' 4th single. Another thing that dawned on me, they so could have tried to dub 'Gentleman/Wildfire' a double A-Side. laugh.gif

'808' being wasted will forever be a travesty. That equally with 'One Shot' are the biggest wastes I think.

I am honestly not that surprised tbh. They have always striked me as a pure singles act, with sometimes a song that the public could get behind, but without having a massive fanbase that would rush out to buy their stuff. That's why they have had quite an inbalanced chart run with their singles. They were in a very different position compared to Girls Aloud and Sugababes and the time they came out also didn't exactly help.

I do agree it's a shame and undeserved, their albums had some real bops and it would have been nice to see them doing better. Still, like I said earlier, I think they did very very well compared to most other girlbands. Only Girls Aloud, Little Mix and Sugababes had more success as a British girlgroup since 2000.

Yeah it's worth noting tbh that unlike 2 of those 3 bands they had to come from nowhere and didn't have a reality show. They didn't really get big performances either sadly, This Morning and Loose Women was as far as it went sometimes :') I'm not making it a competition but I wonder how they'd have done if they got repeated X Factor, BGT performances etc. Not as good as LM obviously but I'm sure their albums could have at least all sold 200k easily.

No absolutely, you're right with that. I am also definitely not trying to compare the groups towards each other, as I think they have all done some brilliant stuff during their careers, but I just always felt the gp were never that much behind them, especially not as them as a group and just liking the occasional song. I also don't think being from a reality show helped GA in the long run, as their first record was their worst selling one and I bet no-one expected them to be so successfull for such a long time.

It's interesting what you note about their promotion, and quite bizarre they never booked an X Factor slot. You would expect, with the amount of top 10 hits they had, it would have made a lot more sense. The biggest show they probably promoted on was CIN, with My Heart Takes Over? And look how that went sad.gif I am still sad that is one of their least performing songs, as to me it's definitely in the top 5 of their best singles.

Posted by: Wall 21st May 2020, 03:23 PM

They actually had an X Factor slot for My Heart Takes Over but they were replaced with a pre-recorded Justin Bieber performance. They were then demoted to Xtra Factor but cancelled it. It would have made On Your Radar a much bigger success and I guess we would have got another single which probably would have been The Way You Watch Me but Faster / Do What You Want With Me could have been big selling singles, especially the latter.

Posted by: Liam.k. 21st May 2020, 03:28 PM

I think by the time The Saturdays arrived, televised promotion was becoming much bigger with the likes of X Factor and BGT etc. The Saturdays' way of promoting on lots of daytime/weekend chart-based TV programmes was a method that worked wonders for Girls Aloud and Sugababes throughout the Noughties but it was becoming more outdated at the turn of the 2010s.

I also think The Saturdays were viewed as a Girls Aloud stand-in whilst they were on hiatus, so the public were here for their singles but weren't invested enough to properly buy into their albums. Also, I think Girls Aloud were pretty well-liked by critics as far as pop bands go, which I don't think The Saturdays had, which may have affected their sales.

This isn't a slight on the girls btw, I love their music and they worked extremely hard. I just think they had a fair bit stacked against them.

I would have to agree with this, yes. As much as I like them as well. Girls Aloud were quite respected by critics, especially from Chemistry onwards (especially for a manufactured pop act), and The Sats never had that. Their music was also slightly more typical girlband-ish and probably stand out enough for people to get interested in a full album.

Posted by: Spiceboy 22nd May 2020, 05:38 PM

Their single sales are pretty impressive to be honest, over 4 million singles, all in all they have probably sold about 5 million records which, considering they were very much UK based and never really hit the big time, isn't bad at all.

Also Rachel Stevens - Some Girls is better than a lot of Saturdays singles, let alone Just Can't Get Enough! cool2.gif

I always found it a bit unusual that they used a different mix for the Just Can't Get Enough music video than what was played on the radio and ultimately what they included on Chasing Lights. What was the rationale? The Radio Mix is definitely superior!

Remixes missing from these digital reissues so far:

If This Is Love (Moto Blanco Dub) [7:47]
Up (Wideboys Dub) [6:01]
Up (Sticky Dub) [5:20]
Up (Hypersonic Mix) [3:20]
Issues (Digital Dog Dub) [6:52]
Just Can't Get Enough (Wideboys Radio Edit) [3:25]

They could have thrown Instrumentals on too!

I appreciate the effort though, it's going to look so neat once they've finished reissuing them all heart.gif I'm sure I've said this before but I would love for Girls Aloud to get the same treatment.

Another case of B-side is better than single.

Wordshaker could have been made instantly better if they switched 'I Can't Wait' with... I dunno, probably 'No One'.

Has anyone else listened to this? The guys of Right Back At Ya! Made me re-discover some forgotten album tracks as well.

'I Can't Wait' made it... 'No One' didn't.

Posted by: Liam.k. 25th June 2020, 11:07 PM

I feel like this one is quite underrated / overlooked in favour of the full-on pop bangers. I really like it! It's a bit like a summery version of 'Issues'.

Just checked out the critical reception on Wiki - yikes, they were harsh! sad.gif

Posted by: Andrew. 25th June 2020, 11:10 PM

Frankie was the lead singer, I'm not surprised kink.gif

This is fine, it just doesn't quite go where I need it to. Towards the bottom of their singles discography ngl

Posted by: Wall 25th June 2020, 11:18 PM

The acoustic version is lush wub.gif

I think Missing You gets a lot of hate because it missed #1 and was released instead of Higher. The amount of promotion Missing You got was the most I’ve ever seen an artist get but it mainly before it was released and it even got to 99.7% on Livepopbars before it started free falling and ended up debuting at #3. I still feel like Higher would have somehow been even bigger had it been released as the lead but in general Missing You was a good album seller and Headlines was a huge success.

Missing You is very overrated and when you hear it for the first time in a while it still sounds a bit fresh in comparison to their other singles!

Posted by: Wall 25th June 2020, 11:25 PM

It's pretty insane they have more monthly listeners than Girls Aloud.

Missing You is such a bop wub.gif Definitely one of their most underrated songs, as it seems a lot of fans don't enjoy it that much. Perfect summer song and it will always remind me of my trip to London during the release week.

“I miss them all a lot,” she says. “I get very nostalgic especially at this time of year because it is now 13 years since we all first met and started as The Saturdays. I miss strutting around in heels on stage as well. I am still in touch all the time with all the girls so when the time is right, I wouldn’t rule out a reunion.”

Una giving us the closest hope yet.

It's funny because I grew up with The Saturdays being the only girl group on the scene and was a huge fan (still am)..but when you watch Little Mix, Fifth Harmony and GRL performances you really see just how bad The Sats were. Like, they had a seriously strong discography + were lovely people + they always nailed their acoustics but even The Honest Vocal Coach was constantly criticising them and looking unimpressed while she was blown away by other girl bands.

They just never seemed to have that fire inside them to become the worlds biggest girl band. Fifth Harmony get stick for their drama and their out of sync choreography which is fair enough but you saw those girls perform for their lives. They worked their asses off performing in malls and doing tiny gigs to build up a fanbase and even when they were travelling the world and performing to black curtained arenas you still saw them (kinda minus Lauren) being so extra and dramatic and putting 100% into every dance routine and vocal. Little Mix are pretty much the perfect girl band and have everything from vocals to dancing to stage presence on lock. Girls Aloud weren't great vocalists but you saw the energy in their performances and their tours were huge because people knew they could put on a show. GRL were like world class performers before they released their debut single.

Then you re-watch The Saturdays and it's just painful. Frankie and Mollie are weak singers, Vanessa's voice was cracking for half their run, Una and Rochelle were inconsistant and then there was all the out of sync dancing, awful pre-recorded 'live' vocals and they just looked so bored half the time. Their Tumble performance was supposed to be a celebration of their Greatest Hits and they had a tour to promote and yet they just stood there?

Even half their 'good' performances I've watched back and still aren't nowhere near the standard they should be.

EDIT - Wow at Una getting a top 13 smash in Ireland this year. Biggest solo Saturdays hit!!

Posted by: P@ul 21st July 2020, 11:25 AM

Una has moved back to Ireland and has been teasing something exciting coming soon. I can see her releasing another album, focusing on the Irish market and continue an Irish television and radio career.

On a side note, I’m still confused why The Saturday’s artist page was taken away while there is still an artist page for Girls Aloud.
The Popjustice page is constantly active, The girls are fairly busy, The Saturday’s social media pages are still active and a reunion is still possible with 3/5 of them meeting recently.

Posted by: shadow2009 21st July 2020, 11:41 AM

LOL @ them talking about their schedule and not realising how busy they would be when they first started.

Their biggest tour was 14 dates in the UK, their promo was morning TV shows once every few months and their music videos were one day affairs in studios and on beaches.

100% agree.

I have always loved The Sats since If This Is Love came out. They released bop after bop, seemed like the nicest girls and they were basically the only girlband around at that time, but having said that- they were just very basic. Nothing stood really out and especially their live peformances were just not that. Like you said, Girls Aloud were maybe not the strongest singers (except for queen Nicola and Nadine), but they always put on a SHOW and stood out. All Saints and Sugababes are amazing vocalists, Spice Girls are just Spice Girls and LM are brilliant performers. The Sats were a bit like Atomic Kitten, although the latter did have some more cultural impact and atleast two MASSIVE pop classics.

From what I remember

• Jayne originally banned Rochelle from dating Marvin or any other boy band members

• She told both Vanessa & Rochelle they were too big to be in girl groups, and is thought to have put them on diet pills

• Refused to give them any time off which forced Frankie into being signed off sick with exhaustion during their first album campaign

Would be nice to see a couple more certs in the next couple of years. as you say I imagine 'Higher' will be next and there is a chance of 'Just Can't Get Enough' and 'Issues' getting Gold at some point, I'd love for 'All Fired Up' to get there but I think that'll take a long time! I genuinely only think she has become so successful because the husband and wife brand created by her and Marvin.
This interview was so awkward. I honestly believe the 'Starsmith Remix' was created intended to be the 'Single Edit' to be the 3rd single for 'Wordshaker' until they decided to move forward to 'Headlines!', I wish they squeezed in it's release somewhere between 'Ego' and 'Notorious' anyway. I know there was some hesitation to release it due to JLS' 'One Shot' being released a month after 'Ego', but that's free press in it's self, battle of the 'One Shots'. laugh.gif

Typical Sats wrong single choice. I really think they had the most missed opportunities of any girl group.

Chasing Lights
One Shot
Lose Control
Puppet
Get Ready, Get Set
Faster
White Lies
Last Call
808

I still get mad over the way the on the radar campaign was handled but at the same time the singles choices were perfect, I would have preferred faster over 30 days or do what you want with me but by going with 30 days it followed a #1 single!

808 would have been a perfect final single but I wonder how different the video would have been

I feel like they wanted 808 as the single but the record company got funding for the video etc from First Choice and realised the set would suit WAYWF more so went with it. I do like it but 808 would have smashed!

No one really decides singles or films videos like that though - you need backing tracks in order, plans for how to shoot things, who sings what etc etc.

If anything - if the story is true - it just sounds like very bad communication between them, their label and their management, which explains why everything went tits up.

I'm imagining Higher is around the 590,000 mark more or less around 20,000 behind 'What About Us' and yes 'Higher' is catching it up fast with the streams.

With 'Mollie King' being in the spotlight today on Buzzjack, I thought I'd give you an approximate sales update for The Sats albums.

albums:
Chasing Lights (400,000)
Headlines! (290,000)
Finest Selection: Greatest Hits (100,000)
On Your Radar (93,000)
Wordshaker (91,000)
Living For The Weekend (50,000)

Headlines!, On Your Radar, Wordshaker and Living For The Weekend could all collect new certifications relatively soon.

Singles wise 'Higher' will be their next song to go Platinum and their cover of 'Just Can't Get Enough' and 'Issues' are next set to go Gold. In regards to singles going 'Silver', I'd say 'Work' could get there eventually, I predict it to be on around 160,000 sales right now, so it might take YEARS. laugh.gif

Chasing Lights was just below Chemistry by Girls Aloud in a 2019 OCC list of best selling girl band albums; Chemistry was on 395k that year so I don’t think Chasing Lights will have sold much more than its 2013 total of 385k.

Headlines was just below One Touch by Sugababes on the list. Last know total for One Touch was 220k in 2009 but I doubt it’s added that many sales to that total.

Has there been any interviews where one of the girls has said the reason why the group never came back together? I have watched interviews from round about the greatest hits era circa 2014 and they always said a new album was on its way and they weren’t splitting, I’m quite curious to know what actually happened

Those sound a tad optimistc, especially the Living For The Weekend one? My understanding is that the two (or three?) most popular tracks don't contribute to the "sales" of an album and that one had sold like 20-25k at the end of the chart-run. I'd also assume that a lot of the streaming of the singles go towards the Finest Selection and not the albums.

QUOTE(JulianNial @ Feb 9 2021, 11:38 AM) *
Just Can't Get Enough is top 20 on Norwegian iTunes... random! Must be an advert or something. laugh.gif

Honestly, if it's not schlager season it takes very little to impact Scandinavian iTunes - I bought an Annie track once and it shot up to the top ten for a bit, so it could just literally be a random purchase.

Again sorry guys I just got excited by a dodgy Twitter post and thought the numbers sounded somewhat realistic. Do you really think it's super optimistic to think that 'Living For The Weekend' has sold the same in 8 years as it did in 5 or 6 weeks

Oh and the Scandi itunes thing.. I thought as much. tongue.gif

The only way we are going to know if these are realistic is if we get a new cert soon or a sales update which will only happen with a reunion announcement.

In general, studio albums just don't tend to sell that much even with trickle sales from streaming. Fan updates tend to be a tad over-optimistic.

I mean, a huge group like the Spice Girls sell around 10k of their most popular studio album (Spice) per year, 3-4k of their second most popular album (Spiceworld) and let's not even mention Forever (less than 1000?). And the first two of those contained 7 number one singles (8 if you count Who Do You Think You Are and Mama as seperate tracks) and a number 2 hit! Unless there are updates where we know exact sales from year A and year B we can't really know what the average sales are for their studio albums.

Posted by: Juliannnial 24th March 2021, 11:05 AM

Ahh that's a shame, it did look so good to see them all so close to certification, at this rate it seems like they won't see anything for YEARS to come then. sad.gif At least it's still nice to see their singles getting there.

To me that just shows how little replayability it has for even hardcore Saturdays fans. laugh.gif

I think I listened to it three times in the seven years it's been released. Aside from What About Us (which is still one of their weakest singles), Disco Love, the single mix of Not Giving Up and MAYBE You Don't Have The Right/Leave A Light On it's such a mess of overproduced, American pandering, autotuned demo sounding rejects with awful lyrics.

I'd assume that it does less than 1000 copies a year tbh. People are most likely to listen to What About Us and Disco Love (and the top two tracks doesn't contribute sales to it - see I'm learning) from it and I'd assume that if people went to an album to actually play by them it'd be the Finest Selection.

Posted by: -Jay- 23rd June 2021, 08:02 AM

Yeah I doubt it's at all close to going silver unfortunately. I'm not sure if we've had an official sales total since 2014, but in April 2014 it had only sold 25,000 (after 6 months on sale - and with the era being pretty much dead at that stage, I doubt it sold many more physicals/downloads). Another 35,000 sales is a huge mountain to climb.

Like tommie says, What About Us and Disco Love's streams are negatable due to being reduced to the average of the next 10 tracks on the album - and most of those songs are not doing great numbers on Spotify.

I wouldn't be too surprised if its weekly sales figure is only in the region of 20-30 sales, at a push.

> Watch it go silver next week now kink.gif

~

Regarding On Your Radar, I'll always think it's a shame that it rather emphatically spoiled their streak of Top 10 albums. It's my favourite album of theirs! cry.gif

#23 must have come as a huge shock to the label/the girls (it would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall when they found out that position kink.gif ). The 5 individual member CD covers and the box set with DVD suggests that there was quite a lot of confidence that it would be a strong seller.

Looking back, its first week sales of 18,044 doesn't look too bad... but evidently not strong enough for a November release. #20 sold 20,314 and #10 sold 34,754. The Saturdays' previous highest first week sale was under 23,000... so that's another sign of over-confidence from the label, to have scheduled it late into Q4.

It seems like they must have had a huge amount of faith in My Heart Takes Over being a smash, but it was such a misfire (very ironic that it's ended up being one of their most streamed songs!).

If only the album had been ready to go straight after All Fired Up. I think a September release would have been considerably less risky. 2 weeks after All Fired Up, only 12,380 was needed to get to #10.

On Your Radar is one of my favourite girlband albums. Shame it wasn't as big at the time but still full of hits.

Posted by: Dangerous Julian 23rd June 2021, 07:42 PM

I was hoping at the time that they'd attempt a re-release with 'On Your Radar', tack a feature on 'White Lies' or 'Get Ready, Get Set' followed by '30 Days' and relaunch the album in attempt to get it into the Top 20. I feel it in my bones that 'White Lies' would have ended up one of their most successful singles.

Posted by: Tafty³³³ 23rd June 2021, 08:58 PM

'White Lies', 'Faster', 'Get Ready, Get Set' and 'Do What You Want With Me' would've been big/decent hits I think. MHTO bombing probably put them off 'Last Call' too which I think would have been a hit too...

Also, I still stand by 'My Heart Takes Over' as a single choice... I just think they shoulda pushed hard with more promo.

I've noticed on Wikipedia that fans tend to love to put sales just under the next certification - I was on Nicola Roberts' page the other day and it claims her album sold 50,000 copies in the UK; err, no. Pretty sure the last update had it on around 20k. I guess some people think it sounds better that they're just under the next certification level rather than being far off. (*edits in that Siobhan Donaghy's Revolution in Me and Ghosts sold 59.9k* 😂)

they should have released the remix of ‘my heart takes over’ that sounded like ‘don’t hold your breath’ as that was a stormer! i guess it went against the whole video concept they had though.

Yes I remember, they were casting for the video and I was horrified and the reaction of the fandom was overwhelmingly negative which is for sure why it was given the axe. The fact we got the 'Saturdays Only version as a '30 Days' b-side can't have been a coincidence. Their team was on some messy s***.

Living in Australia this totally passed me by it wasn’t until Up that I’d come to know who The Saturdays were.

Posted by: Dangerous Julian 29th July 2021, 08:43 AM

I remember hearing it for the first time, my Father was driving me and my sister in an open top Jeep through the Suffolk countryside and it came on Radio 1 after an interview and for some reason I understood that the members were all of the girls from S Club 8.

Not a whole lot said about The Saturdays, but still nice to see her talk about her music career including S Club Juniors!

Posted by: shadow2009 26th August 2021, 06:26 PM

What is taking them so long to get back together?

Posted by: Cameron 26th August 2021, 06:51 PM

Tv presenter Rochelle
Vanessa not liking or interacting with Frankie and Mollie on social media (and vice versa)
Una’s constant WhatsApp messages

Posted by: Lee_J11 26th August 2021, 08:15 PM

That above video was just one section of the interview i think, they cut to a break at that point and said there would be more from Frankie afterwards, so presumably the bit after the break went over her time in The Saturdays in more detail.

I was watching it on my lunch break but had to attend a meeting for the final part laugh.gif

i’m not sure what Vanessa’s issues are now with the girls tbhb

Posted by: Dangerous Julian 26th August 2021, 09:56 PM

In regards to The Sats, she spoke about how the girls didn't really know what was going on until the gig in Dublin where Mollie found her crying in bed with the curtains drawn and she also talked about getting admitted to a specialist hospital at the same time she was supposed to be doing the 'My Heart Takes Over' music video.

'Ego' will be next Platinum, but I don't think it'll be for another 2 or 3 years, it's probably on around 500,000 and something sales right now.

Next Gold will be 'Issues' or 'Just Can't Get Enough'. Album wise 'On Your Radar' and 'Wordshaker' are slowly clawing their way there but it may take some time.

Next Silver will probably be 'Work' or 'If This Is Love', but it's also achievable for '30 Days'... not quite sure how 'My Heart Takes Over' is doing, it was a low seller originally but has done very well on streaming.

EDIT: And 'Headlines!' album can't be far away from Platinum.

Posted by: PAJ 6th September 2021, 03:06 AM

I loved it when it was released but it would be in my top 5 now, pods not too 10 either. It was a cracking song in 2011 though.

Posted by: shadow2009 6th September 2021, 09:51 AM

Honestly as much as these girls are the butt of jokes for their messy performances and lack of sales, it was REALLY brave for a girl group to make a dance album and release stuff like All Fired Up and Not Giving Up. Seriously. They absolutely nailed that sound and it's a shame it completely flopped for them.

Posted by: dannjohn 6th September 2021, 10:21 AM

i honestly think the saturdays are the most overrated group to those in the LGBT+ community.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 6th September 2021, 10:46 AM

AFU is an enduring classic. It sounds quite distinctly 2011 but somehow still fresh.

I was pleased to see it do so well for them at the time.

I’m the same!!

I wasn’t keen on it at all in 2021 but love it now.

Of all their singles I’d probably say it’s the one what would be the biggest hit today. It’s very GA in places as well the way it’s structured. I can totally hear Nadine singing Rochelle’s part laugh.gif

Equally if they're not all in that place yet, there's no point forcing it. There's nothing worse than when bands come back and you can tell they're not really feeling it.

Having listened to certain members on assorted podcasts talking about their time in the band and their "first manager" (i.e. Jayne Collins) over the last year I can't say I'm surprised!

I think as well The Sats always got such a rawer deal than most pop groups, let alone girl groups. It always felt like the done thing (not from these quarters, mind) to knock them at every opportunity.

Well Frankie spoke to Mollie on the first episode of her "Open Mind" podcast. There was one Rochelle did where she talked about it as well, I forget for the life of me which one. But I do remember her saying she was told to lose weight when she joined by someone in their team during their first year.

It's really embarrassing they were six years into the game at this point. The fact that they just drop in and out of choreography whenever they can be arsed (and even then it's sloppy and out of sync), the lack of energy and a member missing while they half-sing half-mime to the track just sums them up their commitment from On Your Radar onwards.

It’s really sad to see that performance of WAYWF I actually went to see the Greatest Hits tour before they split and I feel like they really gave it everything.

Been visiting On Your Radar and Living For The Weekend (Since hearing No it just sounds like a Sats track) there’s so many bops which honestly would work even now.

It’s just a shame they never had an edge it was all very pose, hand movements and mime a lot of the time.

Will always be a Stan but you can see why popularity dwindled because at times it was cringe even as a bubblegum pop fan when they’d just stand there and awkwardly try to remember the minimal choreo (They loved to dramatically switch positions too)

Posted by: Ho-Lee Smokes 16th October 2021, 10:35 PM

i don’t actually think they get as much credit as they deserve, they did promo more than anyoneee. their choreography was just awful but they managed to main relevant for so long and they never ever got a big primetime tv slot. it’s sad they only managed graham norton once and never got bgt or x factor, especially the latter where they were dropped last minute and refused to go on xtra factor

Posted by: Cameron 17th October 2021, 12:23 AM

The Saturdays were released at a time when it was fine to just pose and do hand movements. Little Mix are really the first proper all singing girl band (sorry PCD) to incorporate full choreography into their routines.

Posted by: kye 10th May 2022, 09:48 AM

there would have to be some serious money in it for them + 3 of them have pretty cushty broadcasting gigs so it won’t happen. the cash is in touring + they didn’t do particularly well there so there’s no incentive for them to do it. as long as rochelle continues to get the big presenting gigs, we have no hope sad.gif

Posted by: Mangø 10th May 2022, 11:14 AM

Yeah there's literally no reason for them to reunite. They were a great band but they'd never be able to recreate the magic of their heyday so some things should just be left in the past where they belong.

In reality I went to the Greatest Hits last tour and it wasn’t exactly full (lots of the top rows were empty)

And didn’t they have a Groupon deal for half price in some locations?!

So I just can’t see it unless they need the money and do smaller tours?!

I mean I’m sure they could make money reuniting but not whilst they’re earning decent figures.

I doubt they'd ever come back for a whole tour given how unsuccessful their last two tours were but I would love to see 'One Night with The Saturdays' in London maybe - that could sell well given it's only one night and the right venue.

I think a performance ten years after splitting up or maybe for the 15th year anniversary after Chasing Lights was released (2023 Autumn) - that would be cute.

Posted by: Ho-Lee Smokes 10th May 2022, 06:13 PM

Notorious really hurt them and the On Your Radar campaign, Headlines tour sold out in minutes and probably could have been upgraded to an arena tour, Notorious even opened with great sales and then had a poor chart run as it wasn't really supported by radio.

Gentleman was the final nail in their 99 lives.

I absolutely loved The Saturdays and would love a comeback of some sort!

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 10th May 2022, 08:15 PM

The Saturdays actually made so many poor choices...

Following What About Us with Gentlemen...

Wordshaker era was so bad (promo wise and the whole styling)

Headlines saved it luckily!

The campaigns really started to feel meh with Living For The Weekend (The cover was so bland and it was a bit of a mess)

It’s a shame as they had some iconic songs (I even loved half the dross) but I can see why sales dwindled with poor decision making / thought.

What about us was just the best feeling as a fan though! When that hit number 1 we all went wild!

QUOTE(Ho-Lee Smokes @ May 10 2022, 07:13 PM) *
Notorious really hurt them and the On Your Radar campaign, Headlines tour sold out in minutes and probably could have been upgraded to an arena tour, Notorious even opened with great sales and then had a poor chart run as it wasn't really supported by radio.

Gentleman was the final nail in their 99 lives.

I think trying the OA/OS method for 'Notorious' is what damaged that the most, it was obviously never going to work for an act like them - see also The Wanted with 'We Own The Night'.

They really did well to survive the amount of forks in the road they did though, I certainly didn't imagine they'd last 6 years when they started out.

Posted by: -Jay- 10th May 2022, 11:53 PM

I feel like Notorious did very well to debut at #8 with the OA/OS method, but this resulted in them struggling to find momentum for it in the following weeks! When the CD came out it only climbed back up to #21. Funnily enough it managed to climb to #18 a week after without the physical boost, so that suggested that they mistimed the CD release.

9 weeks inside the Top 40 is better than many of their singles achieved though, so that was a positive to take from how the release of Notorious was handled. Maybe if they'd done a traditional held back release it would have been more like 5 weeks Top 40, even if it's likely they'd have got a better peak position for it.

Top 40 weeks, in order of release:

#08, 05 weeks - If This Is Love
#05, 19 weeks - Up
#04, 13 weeks - Issues (Post-album single)
#02, 07 weeks - Just Can't Get Enough
#22, 07 weeks - Work (Post-album single)
#02, 06 weeks - Forever Is Over
#09, 13 weeks - Ego (Post-album single)
#03, 07 weeks - Missing You
#10, 13 weeks - Higher (Post-album single)
#08, 09 weeks - Notorious (On Air/On Sale)
#03, 06 weeks - All Fired Up
#15, 02 weeks - My Heart Takes Over
#07, 03 weeks - 30 Days
#01, 10 weeks - What About Us
#14, 02 weeks - Gentleman
#05, 05 weeks - Disco Love
#19, 01 week - Not Giving Up (Post-album single)
#38, 01 week - What Are You Waiting For

Top 40 weeks, in order of most weeks to least:

#05, 19 weeks - Up
#04, 13 weeks - Issues (Post-album single)
#09, 13 weeks - Ego (Post-album single)
#10, 13 weeks - Higher (Post-album single)
#01, 10 weeks - What About Us
#08, 09 weeks - Notorious (On Air/On Sale)
#02, 07 weeks - Just Can't Get Enough
#03, 07 weeks - Missing You
#22, 07 weeks - Work (Post-album single)
#02, 06 weeks - Forever Is Over
#03, 06 weeks - All Fired Up
#05, 05 weeks - Disco Love
#08, 05 weeks - If This Is Love
#07, 03 weeks - 30 Days
#14, 02 weeks - Gentleman
#15, 02 weeks - My Heart Takes Over
#19, 01 week - Not Giving Up (Post-album single)
#38, 01 week - What Are You Waiting For

Up spending 19 weeks in the Top 40 was truly remarkable! All Fired Up deserved so much more. cry.gif

Their label deciding to abandon the 'On Your Radar' album and not even try with a post-album single, that was a shame really. I don't actually mind '30 Days', but I'm not sure what the idea was behind them releasing a stand alone single like that (I know it was eventually included on 'Living for the Weekend'). It didn't really do much for them, and they could have spent that time trying to course-correct the album they'd only just released? laugh.gif

Their career was so messy!! With a few high points. I always felt like they were on the cusp of getting bigger, but it never really happened. 'What About Us' felt like things finally were coming together for them, so in typical Saturdays style they well and truly unravelled it with its follow up! laugh.gif

Posted by: kye 11th May 2022, 12:11 AM

30 days was cute but when you had the likes of faster, get ready, get set and white lies just sitting on an album, it was crazy that they were passed up in favour of it. the album had done so poorly that the gp wouldn’t have known where the tracks had come from.

Posted by: kye 11th May 2022, 12:19 AM

i’ll also die on the hill that wildfire was leaps + bounds ahead of gentleman in quality - that really should have been the a-side. it was so much more where the uk music scene was at that time. gentleman was very clearly meant for an american audience, the rap section listing off a list of largely american men, as if lamar odom and larry king were households names here?!

had they gone what about us > wildfire > disco love > not giving up i think a different story would have played out.

Posted by: Mangø 11th May 2022, 08:35 AM

Wildfire is pop perfection heart.gif

Posted by: Bustin Jieber 11th May 2022, 09:04 AM

'Wildfire' would have been a better choice (I mean, anything would). I'd really love to see how it would have panned out if they followed up 'What About Us' with 'Not Giving Up' (knowing they had that the whole time, and 'Disco Love' didn't exist yet).

I can't imagine they'd have survived long into the streaming era anyway, but they could have easily have squeezed a few more hits and perhaps one more studio album out of their run had they not catastrophically f-ed up with 'Genntleman'.

Posted by: -Jay- 11th May 2022, 09:34 AM

Their taste was certainly questionable because they were all super excited and passionate about Gentleman. Although Una said years later that it became a least favourite for her because whenever they performed it they sensed tumbleweed from the crowd. I seem to remember they were apathetic about Not Giving Up and surprised that it was a fan favourite. thinking.gif

They really needed to follow up What About Us with a song that was somewhat similar. For some reason I’ve not given Wildfire much attention over the years, but I just listened to it and I agree that it had more potential than Gentleman! Trust them to make it the B Side to it laugh.gif

I also agree about the songs you mention from On Your Radar, Kye! I’ll always find it curious their label decided to launch a dance-pop heavy album with a ballad single. Their decision making was wild! I think the album really should have been ready to release directly after All Fired Up.

Posted by: shadow2009 11th May 2022, 10:01 AM

As much as I blame their label/management for their shocking decisions at times, I have to admit that looking back these girls just weren't good enough.

It wasn't until I saw other girl groups after them that I realised how lazy and sloppy The Sats were. Little Mix and Fifth Harmony blew them out of the water vocally and work ethic wise and even GRL were giving amazing performances on their first single release.

They definitely had bops and they looked SO GOOD together and yeah they had nice harmonies and some of them were decent singers but they had so many performances and chances to impress people and gain new fans on TV and they always sucked. laugh.gif Their performances of What About Us and All Fired Up were always atrocious.

Posted by: -Jay- 11th May 2022, 10:41 AM

They didn’t often get the opportunity to do major TV performances did they? I think their budget was a bit of an ongoing issue for them and may have held them back.

Their earliest performances included being a support act, lots of nightclub appearances & shopping centres, which was a fairly low level start, in terms of honing their performance skills. The regular GMTV & This Morning performances, with their basic set ups and camera work, always shone a spotlight on sloppy choreography. I feel like those sort of performances were always a bit phoned in because they didn’t allow for anything extravagant.

What I’m getting at is that if they’d had the chance to “level up” earlier on in their career, such as gaining experience with The X Factor appearances, then maybe they’d have honed their skills & generally been able to put on more of a show?

I think we saw occasional glimpses of what The Saturdays were capable of. Their “So You Think You Can Dance” performance of Notorious was good, I thought!

Towards the end of their run, they were totally going through the motions. I feel like I can sense their boredom when they performed What Are You Waiting For on This Morning laugh.gif

Little Mix had a very different journey from the very start, which I think put them in better stead to become a far more polished act. If you think about it, before they’d even released their first single they had a string of major performances under their belts thanks to The X Factor. They weren’t stuck in a perpetual cycle of This Morning performances.

Posted by: shadow2009 11th May 2022, 11:18 AM

Well honestly I remember their Greatest Hits medley on Tumble and that was a PERFECT opportunity to really let loose and sell some tickets for their tour and even though they had a HUGE empty space they just stood still for half of it and done some basic arm movements as usual. They had 5 big songs to showcase and they didn't even bother.

Their Paul O'Grady performance of Forever Is Over was traumatic, they performed Missing You on some big TV shows and it was dodgy miming and crap dancing and their Ant and Dec performance is only known for Mollie's bum note so they definitely had chances on bigger stages and never made a good impression.

Even in America when they launched on Jay Leno with a live band and vocals both Una and Vanessa were shocking at points and Rochelle completely changed the melody of the chorus.

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 11th May 2022, 11:26 AM

The Sats had no budget though...

It was obvious they were clawing cash from all sorts of brand deals to keep them afloat.

I don’t doubt they made a lot of money but it was totally different back then labels focused on chart positions / every single needed to succeed with decentish sales...

I’m sure they would have looked / seemed more polished if they had more of a budget which included some clever choreo (They tried to stay with old school moves (Steps etc) but times were changing especially half way through the 6 year stint they had.

It really showed when they performed What About Us on The Today show in the US! Such a big moment and they literally looked like they had been formed the day before or it was an audition sad.gif

Posted by: tommie 11th May 2022, 11:39 AM

Considering Peter Loraine ran Bananarama's fan club at one point, I think he didn't properly push them to do more probably thinking that it would have that shambolic drunk-girls-on-a-night-out appeal that Bananarama had, except it just didn't work with The Saturdays and it just came off as shoddy and sloppy since they were put together by a (supposedly) professional management.

Posted by: kye 11th May 2022, 12:03 PM

it’s also worth noting that they didn’t give themselves a lot of time to rehearse for their performances. those of us that followed them know that there was always something happening with them - biggest thing being the pregnancies, it was a miracle they managed to get anything done. plus, they always seemed to be on holiday laugh.gif

i always thought part of their charm was that they weren’t quite as polished but then when you see some of the bigger performances, i wished they’d put a bit more in it.

I’m not downplaying their success at all, just poking fun at the fact yet another unlikely group from the 00’s/10’s is back together. Pretty sure Tulisa and Dappy had a falling out and genuinely didn’t think there’d be demand for an arena tour for them. Of course, if they did reunite, I would be there front row crying.

Why does Rochelle wanna forget that she was ever in a girl group so bad cheeseblock.png

Posted by: -Jay- 30th September 2022, 07:36 AM

Oh Rochelle sad.gif

I wonder if the other 4 would ever consider doing it without Rochelle? I know that wouldn't be ideal, and I'd totally respect it if all 5 of them are on the same page as each other that it's 5 or nothing. I'd certainly rather 5. However if 4 of them have reached the point that they'd really love to do it, maybe they should just go for it? Maybe if they told Rochelle they will do it, it could prompt Rochelle to have a change of heart if she experiences fear of missing out. The thing is, if she feels that her lack of involvement means that the others definitely won't go ahead, then she'll likely never feel motivated to do it, she'd be the one holding the cards. Unless she has a sudden change of heart of course... but she's been pretty persistent about having no interest in it.

It's so crazy that it's been 8 years since they were last active. It felt like there was a wave of interest in them again when all the singles were being reissued, I seem to remember there being some viral tweets. It would be a shame if they let opportunities pass them by. It would be so fun for them to revisit those times, I'd love to see them perform again.

Mollie GETTING them that Radio 1 Plays

Frankie getting them those ITV promos

It would be such a shame for them never to reunite when they did so well in staying relevant for so long.

So many other girlbands came and went during there time and they were still charting when Little Mix were.

They could definitely release some of the albums on Vinyl at least I’m sure they would sell well.

I don’t get what she has to lose out on by doing it. I know she has a couple of shows but it’s not like she is a huge solo star, she can easily do a reunion alongside the tv shows she presents… Marvin did it why can’t she? Unless she just doesn’t want to perform anymore which is fair enough I guess.

I hope they return for a top 10 iTunes smash and make a massive £20 while sellling their tour on itison and TRUST ME, i will BUY

It's more the fact that The Saturdays isn't likely to get a big money offer to do a tour or a record deal and would actually have to put work in. There's not a lot of money for them to return briefly to coast on their past successes - it's not a minimal effort and cash in deal.

Posted by: ThePensmith 2nd October 2022, 09:26 PM

I think, especially after listening to Rochelle's episode of Steven Bartlett's podcast recently (The Diary of a CEO), I've made peace with the fact that it's still not the time for her. She's not in that place in her life where she wants to revisit whilst she has her presenting / baby brand / the interior design thing she does on W at the moment (which just seems to be "Here, have a white and beige k!tchen with bifold doors and an island". I digress)

Which you can understand on one hand - let's not forget that her and Frankie were both in S Club Juniors and OK, there was a gap of about five years between their last single and The Saturdays' first. So they basically were in pop longer than any of the other girls in one form or another.

But that time will eventually come, and probably when we least expect it. I dare say Peter Loraine and Fascination, knowing how meticulously they've done other reunions in the past - Steps, Bananarama, All Saints - will ensure this is done serving everything we want!

Ha their Top 10 really has been so random over the years, but it's lovely to see Last Call getting some attention.

Not Giving Up being their fifth highest placed single is quite strange too. I mean, bop, but it was their second worst selling single at the time.

When Love Takes Over reaching 13m streams, and being third place for them... it's so wild for a B Side.

Last Call was always the best ballad on OYR. Should've been a post-album single and Where My Heart Takes Over should've been paid dust especially when gems like Faster and White Lies were sitting right there.

My Heart Takes Over was a brilliant choice of single it just didn’t perform as good as we all expected, I think the X Factor promo being cut last minute really affected the single and album performance. I’m guessing Faster would have been the logical third single tbf

Posted by: JosephStyles 9th October 2022, 04:35 PM

My Heart Takes Over was a terrible single choice I think. I like the song a lot but its chart performance leaves a LOT to be desired and I think is largely responsible for On Your Radar's peak position. I adore Last Call and if they really wanted a ballad, it would've been the better option, though I think Faster is the biggest missed opportunity for a single release and I believe it would've been a top 10 hit at least. X Factor would've potentially helped it into the top 10 but I don't think MHTO was ever destined to be much of a hit sadly.

Posted by: Cameron 9th October 2022, 04:44 PM

Need to disagree. I love Last Call but My Heart Takes Over is an amazing ballad. (Side eying those who are calling it Where My Heart Takes Over too lmao). On Your Radar really deserved a campaign as long as Chasing Lights. I would gladly have had them repackage it with 30 Days to bridge the wait until What About Us.

Also, did On Your Radar not sell like 18k first week? Which is very respectable. Also releasing it in Q4 didn’t help either.

I think My Heart Takes Over was a brilliant single choice and is one of threat only singles that I regularly listen to. X Factor being pulled significantly impacted on its success unfortunately.

The sales were fine and obviously it was a tougher market, but I doubt their label would've been happy at all about a peak of #23. They wouldn't have picked a Q4 date if they didn't expect them to compete for top 10 minimum I'm sure (especially after three consecutive top 10 albums!), and perhaps with a different single, it could've been at least a bit more competitive than it was because it's clear MHTO didn't resonate with the public.

Obviously that's just how I see things and I enjoy MHTO a lot on its own.

Posted by: Cameron 9th October 2022, 05:14 PM

I have such wonderful memories associated with the album release and it breaks my heart that it doesn’t have the peak it deserved.

Posted by: -Jay- 9th October 2022, 08:53 PM

Just to reiterate others, from a commerical point of view My Heart Takes Over ended up coming across as a bad choice for them. A pretty terrible singles chart performance (only four weeks in the Top 200 was quite shocking!) and On Your Radar missed the Top 20 off the back of it. cry.gif

Even though its first week sales seem rather good (particularly compared to nowadays!) in the context of Q4 2011 they were a bit meh. Particularly considering they did multi formats (which still wasn't a very common thing to do in those days. Imagine if they'd only released a standard CD and Deluxe CD!). I think the label had a lot of confidence and high expectations in On Your Radar to justify doing the individual member artworks and a box set.

Maybe the proposed X Factor performance was the key that was needed for it to become a hit, but many other singles of theirs did a lot better despite not having major TV slots. Which really suggests that My Heart Takes Over didn't connect by their usual standards.

It was kind of an odd choice to release a predominantly pop-dance album off the back of a ballad. I think the album should have been released directly after All Fired Up. Then release Faster, which personally I believe would have been a strong enough choice to be able to do well as a post-album single! I feel like My Heart Takes Over might have been better served as an album track gem, with fans saying for 11 years how it should have been a single kink.gif

Posted by: Tafty³³³ 9th October 2022, 09:06 PM

'My Heart Takes Over' was, on paper at the time at least, the best to be the ballad single imo. It's one of the most bizarre flops I can think of. The song is strong. The video suited the time of year and I really think had it got that XF performance it was rumoured to get, it would've propelled it to being a decent sized hit. But without that type of promo, it bombed. Casual fans weren't interested for whatever reason and the non-fans they won over with 'All Fired Up' wouldn't be interested when all they would have wanted was another banger.

Would MHTO have sufficed better in late Winter (ala 'Issues')? After 'All Fired Up' they should've probably stuck with that sound and gone for something like 'Get Ready, Get Set' or 'Faster'. Just NOT 'The Way You Watch Me'! LMAO.

I think 'Last Call' is nice. But I think it'd have performed very similar to MHTO/not much better. Especially as I think, in hindsight, following up AFU with a big ballad was probably their mistake?

Looking back objectively, On Your Radar should have been the killer double platinum campaign. It's still their most consistent album for me and the one I revisit the most. "Notorious" and "All Fired Up" were and still are that killer 1-2 punch of opening singles so that set it up perfectly.

But I think "My Heart Takes Over" was an ideal choice for third single - it was the right time of year for it, it had wider crossover appeal and the video was gorgeous, and I don't believe it deserved to foot all the blame for the album then not doing as well.

Those with short memories may forget but between "All Fired Up" charting and "My Heart Takes Over" being released, that was when Una announced she was pregnant with Aoife and when Frankie took her sabbatical, which as we now know was for her depression.

That did set off a chain of "Are they gonna split" type rumours which sad but true, was still happening as commonplace for a girl group back then, and which, on a wider public scale, did somewhat overshadow the fact a new single and album were imminent.

Also I remember seeing the girls during promo for "My Heart Takes Over" when they filmed a TV show - think it was The Album Chart Show special they did, I remember because Olly Murs and JLS filmed theirs that night too, and I was in the audience for all three. It was just the four of them cause of course this was when Frankie was still off of promo duties. They were juggling all that with the arena tour rehearsals - at some point something would have to sacrifice one thing over another.

I don't really remember The X Factor performance rumour. It's a shame if it's true that was on the table because it does bring up a "what could have been" style scenario. But on a positive at least the arena tour was everything they deserved and more. I saw the Wembley show and I was so proud of them when they did it, especially because exactly two years before I'd seen them at my students Union Christmas party (when someone bottled Mollie - how dare they?) so it was a bit of a YES moment for me. Like "Go on girls!"

I still say "30 Days" should have been tacked onto a deluxe reissue with the tour DVD. It had no place being on Living For The Weekend TBH.

I’m sure they were actually announced on the show the week prior to which they were to perform, weren’t they?

Posted by: kye 10th October 2022, 06:47 AM

my heart takes over is nice but it’s not what the public wanted from them. it should have gone notorious into all fired up and faster lead the album.

i know they did the album chart show performance of ‘faster’ and it was starting to get played on radio but then it got pulled. i guess they thought with una being pregnant and what was happening with frankie, it would be easier to have a vanessa and rochelle led single.

I like a bit of 'My Heart Takes Over' but it was in no way strong enough to release an album off the back of, particularly in Q4. Very unfortunate what happened with the lined-up X-Factor performance though. sad.gif

I remember at that exact same time both them and Pixie Lott released a single which drastically underperformed, taking their respective albums with it.

I got excited thinking they'd be on X Factor on the 20th, but it seems it's just Xtra Factor.

(The link is dead by the way)

QUOTE(Encore @ Nov 7 2011, 01:59 PM) *
The guy who seems to find out about the guest performances first (he's got them right every week so far) said it seems the girls were originally due to appear on the main show with Rihanna as he was told first time round but recently been told it seems the girls are now demoted to Xtra Factor in favour of the charity single performance, taking their place. Annoying.

Don't see why the charity single performance can't just take the place of the finalists group performance instead and have the two guest stars as normal, but no. Or even 3 performances like they did with Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson and Pro Green with Rihanna, The Sats and the charity single, but again, no... typical Saturdays luck!

It's not the be all or end all no, but when it seems they were originally going to be on, and to have to settle for less again is soo frustrating, if true.

New here so Hi all...
I own the xfactor-updates site & apoligise for the confusion.
I noticed a few links to the site from here so thought I should post what I know.

I've posted all the xfactor guest performers way before they have been 'officially' confirmed, it's a spoiler site & some of you might know I don't post the usual tabloid shite but all have been correct so far.
Named the finalists & guests before any other sites for the last 3 years but got a spanner thrown in the works this year after a SYCO insider deliberately fed me a wrong finalist name to discredit my spoilers (all others were 100%)
Besides that fool (wont give his name), I am back on track with a great source for who they are booking for the live shows.

I was told Rihanna & The Saturdays were booked for the weekend of the 20th, then told the charity single would take place of The Sats & they would do the xtra factor instead.

I didn't ask which charity single, just presumed it was the finalists. However that single is due out the following week, so I'm as confused as you guys.

Hopefully I'll get confirmation tomorrow, will update the post as soon as I do.
One Direction are performing on both shows this weekend, so it's still possible The Saturdays will do the same.
With One Direction & JLS being added to the xfactor charity single, they could be doing last minute changes as to when acts are available to perform?
Will update when I know more, sorry guys.

Looking through the My Heart Takes Over thread it doesn’t seem like it was ever confirmed / announced officially that they’d be on The X Factor’s main show, just that a user on Digitalspy with insider info said that they were intended to be, then got demoted (which he confirmed on 11th November).

~

One positive happening regarding the single is that it was A Listed by Radio 1, and surprisingly it received stronger TV airplay than Notorious. So My Heart Takes Over was getting some decent exposure. Looking further into the thread, it seemed to become clear to everyone on its release date that it was struggling - the iTunes updates left a lot to be desired.

They're so lucky they weren't dropped at the start of 2012 when you think about it.

Still hoping for the All Fired Up Tour DVD 😂 (or for it to at least leak online)

They definitely had 9 lives! I think a harsher label might have pulled the plug after Wordshaker. They were fortunate that the label's response to Wordshaker's performance was the idea to completely rebrand it as a different album altogether. Quite unusual, yet it actually worked. laugh.gif It was a bit annoying that Wordshaker was scrubbed from being able to be purchased (or streamed) for many years.

Something random I read on Popjustice - I'm not sure if it's been discussed before or if it's common knowledge. Apparently Ina Wroldsen mentioned it. If This Is Love was originally called 'If It's Not Love'. It certainly makes more sense... "If it's not love, then I don't want to know what is"

Now is this time for them to return with Little Mix on a break.

I honestly think they’d get some hype with good promo and be able to sell tour tickets.

It would all need to handled properly though not a half assed attempt.

The limited support from Notorious was quite bizzare considering it’s amazing start, it really struggled on airplay didn’t it!

They'd be perfect for some Pride festival slots.

Whilst I know I said it wasn’t the right choice for single three I do absolutely love My Heart Takes Over. I remember the first time I heard it. Listening to Radio One via a radio app on my phone.

A bit late but just chiming in to say that the week they were 'rumored' to be on X-Factor performing was also the same week they were filmed meeting Little Mix for their VT. I don't think it's a coincedince that the producers bothered to send a camera crew to the rehearsals of The Saturdays for a 20 second clip if they weren't also performing that weekend.

Posted by: Ho-Lee Smokes 17th October 2022, 11:00 AM

i still can’t believe they never really got that big promotional slot, I mean they got Strictly but that had no affect what so ever back then

I just still can't get over their B-sides...

'I Can't Wait' and 'Flashback' are better than half of 'Wordshaker', in fact they probably should have had 'No One' and either '2 am' as the B-sides.

Don't let's get started on 'Wildfire', it could have been their LM 'Touch' moment. HUGE hit potential.

Agree that the majority of their b-sides are superb. How did Wildfire miss the album? Should’ve also been a single, oh well.

Very much agree! Some of their best tracks. Does make you wonder what crack the label/team was on when it comes to them picking trackless and B-sides.

Posted by: Cameron 20th January 2023, 05:53 AM

I love 2am lmao.

The fact that Wildfire was given B-Side treatment over Gentleman absolutely baffles me. I still blame Una for hyping Gentleman up saying that it’s her favourite… Then hating it when the fans didn’t react well to it! laugh.gif

2am is so cute! Reminds me ever so slightly of Madonna - True Blue lmao.

'Open Up' is a certified BANGER though! What a bop.

Posted by: JulianNial 20th January 2023, 08:28 PM

'Open Up' was actually one of my early favourites. Okay sorry about the 2am shade, I think it's only one of my lowest streamed by them because Last.fm has it as '2am', '2 am' and '2 A.M.', but at least we can agree on the No One/Flashback switch.

Also hating how underrated the whole 'Wordshaker' album was/is in general seeing as it gave us 'Ego', 'One Shot' and 'Wordshaker' (title track).

...'One Shot' not being a single, curses me monthly as well.
