BuzzJack Music Forum _ Katy Perry _ 'Prism' • Third Studio Album

Posted by: Grief 20th April 2013, 09:14 PM

QUOTE
The pop star is working with collaborators such as Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Bonnie McKee and others.

Katy Perry is halfway through her third album, the follow-up to “Teenage Dream,” which spawned five Hot 100 No. 1 singles. She has yet to feel any pressure.

“When I put myself on a timeline, when I tell the record company when I want to release the album, that’s when the race starts,” Perry said during a session Thursday at ASCAP’s I Create Music Expo. “That’s when I put pressure on myself.”

So far she has collaborated with many of the producers and songwriters behind “Teenage Dream,” among them Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Greg Wells.

Wells, she says, “allows me to vomit words. Not that I can’t find that with other but he just lets me [makes retching sound]. Max and Luke push me the most. As a team we have certain strengths. With Max, it’s melody choices, Luke is production and I’m topline and melody.”

She has also written new songs with Sia and continues to work with Bonnie McKee, her collaborator on “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream.”

Working with Bonnie McKee "is like an emotional abuse session," she said. "Bonnie and I argue (like) we’re in the ring fighting for the best lyric. We presented ‘Teenage Dream’ three times (before it was recorded).”

At a recent session, Perry went in with a melody and verse to work with Greg Kurstin and McKee. “She came in from a yoga class and said, 'I want to write a song called 'Double Rainbow.'' So we have a song called ‘Double Rainbow.’”

Perry spent an hour taking questions from ASCAP executive VP, membership, Randy Grimmett, who had the singer-songwriter detail her career from her beginnings as a 13-year-old learning to play guitar to working in the Christian music world and then the ups and downs of her career prior to her chart success and arena tours.

She began many of her anecdotes with “want to hear something really depressing” – or words to that effect – to draw a complete picture of what she went through as struggling artist. She detailed negative and positive experiences working with Glen Ballard (pro) and the Matrix trio (con), Island Def Jam (bad) and Capitol (positive and improving with the new management team), and regularly reinforced the idea that she loves to collaborate with other writers.

A few other tidbits Perry said:

On the music and artists who have had the greatest influence on her, Perry rattled off Queen’s “Killer Queen,” the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds,” Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill,” No Doubt, Patty Griffin and Jonatha Brooke.

Dave Stewart, with whom she wrote “I’m Still Breathing,” was the first collaborator to give her the freedom to write whatever she wanted.

Once she goes on tour, she stops writing. “I don’t get into a studio when I’m touring.”

Her favorites that she saw at Coachella last weekend? Purity Ring, M83 and Sia.

Career highlight? “Firework,” she said, is “the most important song I’ve written.” Performing it with an autistic girl accompanying her on piano and vocal harmony at a fundraiser was “the most important performance of my career so far.”

She does not like the use of aliases by songwriters and producers. “I wouldn’t meet Dr. Luke for six months because I knew he wasn’t really a doctor. What’s wrong with your first and last name? Why do they have to be from outer space?”

I'm really interested to see what she comes up with, and if she can keep up her success.

Posted by: THEO. 21st April 2013, 10:44 AM

This should be fantastic - hopefully there's as much bubblegum on this as there was on Teenage Dream, with a fair share of maturer pop as well. Do we know if it's due for release this year or next?

She's halfway through making the album, which should be an indication.

Anyway, I loved Teenage Dream when it came out but I got so sick of her by the time that she stopped releasing songs from that era. Let's hope that she's not as dominant as last time.

Posted by: Danny 21st April 2013, 09:37 PM

Only halfway through? She's pretty much the perfect summer artist, so I was hoping it would be imminent by now.

Nonetheless, whenever her new stuff comes out, I'm pretty excited for it. She's such a good songwriter herself that she's not really dependent on producers to have good songs like some of the other pop girls, so I don't see why there would be a slump in the quality of her work.

Posted by: dannjohn3 21st April 2013, 11:30 PM

Oh she'll have something out for summer. She always does.

Completely agreed with this, seconded!

However,I Kissed A Girl was winter, Fireowkr was winter. If she's gone for a darker tone, then it kinda makes sense, but I really wanted another California Gurls, Teenage Dream, but that was last era

Posted by: Griff 26th May 2013, 06:33 PM

I never knew that August was in the month of winter! ohmy.gif

Posted by: Michael. 26th May 2013, 06:51 PM

Well, it practically is here ...

Posted by: Robot 26th May 2013, 07:06 PM

Yeah, I was hoping for another summer anthem - but there's no real sign of that, is there? sad.gif

If we could get another Firework (aka my fave / 2nd fave - can't decide) song of all time in Winter though, I'm ALL FOR WAITING.

Posted by: dannjohn3 26th May 2013, 11:08 PM

Her first singles are ALWAYS in the summer.

Posted by: Calum Sandé 23rd June 2013, 04:19 PM

Katy has said that one of the tracks on the album is titled 'Bad Photographs'.

QUOTE
''I titled it 'Bad Photographs' because the idea is that when people are in a relationship they only take photographs when they are happy, and sometimes when it ends you realise maybe it would be important to take photographs when it's not happy. So I have this idea, 'Looking back we should have taken photographs / of all the unhappiness / because now my mind's playing tricks on me / I forget we are not meant to be'.''

Apparently a reliable source according to the chart forum. October seems a bit soon, as much as I'd love the album to be released then. I imagine that'd mean a single in August and only one pre-album single. Hopefully whenever the single's released here, it's the same time as the rest of the world.

Posted by: MrDaniel 24th June 2013, 11:13 PM

I dunno... we'll see. Katy is a summer single girl.

Posted by: Calum Sandé 25th June 2013, 12:12 AM

October seems good. Hopefully a new single soon enough, then! biggrin.gif

Posted by: *Tim 25th June 2013, 03:04 PM

She might just release a single out of nowehere in the next couple o' weeks one can hope right?

Posted by: Rob Summers 26th June 2013, 10:27 PM

Pretty sure she'll release a new song in October and perform it on the X Factor as promotion because she's a usual guest on it.

Posted by: Calum Sandé 26th June 2013, 11:37 PM

I definitely think she'd benefit from another X Factor performance. Her previous two were absolutely fantastic, especially the stripped back performance of The One That Got Away. wub.gif

Posted by: *Tim 29th July 2013, 10:07 PM

This is appearently called Prism and is released the 22 Oct '13

Yep! And this is the image that seems to confirm this:

AHHHHH THIS IS FINALLY HAPPENING.

Posted by: Jack 29th July 2013, 11:22 PM

So ridiculously excited for this! She has a lot to live up to though, Teenage Dream was such an amazing era wub.gif

Posted by: THEO. 29th July 2013, 11:26 PM

Exciting! I take this to mean the album is her reflecting upon herself, so hopefully the ballads are just as good as those on Teenage Dream, along with the uptempos which she's sure to kill anyway! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Calum Sandé 29th July 2013, 11:32 PM

I was immediately reminded of Pearl when I read it was titled Prism. kink.gif Hopefully there's another gem like that on this album. Really looking forward to it, though! w00t.gif

Quite risky going for a Q4 release, especially since this year it looks like she'll have competition from most of her major rivals. I could easily see her getting overshadowed by Gaga, Rihanna and Beyonce (in terms of album sales atleast).

Will she really have that much competition from Rihanna, though? This is Katy's third 'incarnation' (if you like), and she's just going from strength to strength. Each year Rihanna just comes back with the same thing, and it got boring a while ago (after the Loud era). I think Katy would come out on top between the two of them.

Well i can bet you she wont be overshadowed by Beyonce who keeps pushing back her album since march

Posted by: Jáhq 31st July 2013, 12:11 AM

I doubt a Q4 release would be a problem for Katy at all going into her third album when her last one was so massive. It's out a month before Gaga and she had by far the best singles campaign out of them last time round so if this one is handled as well.

Posted by: Jonjo 31st July 2013, 02:17 AM

I'd actually argue that Katy Perry was the bigger star out of all the main popstars (GaGa, Beyoyo, RiRi etc..) so a Q4 release should not be a problem for her, imo.

Katy's official website http://www.katyperry.com/ has relaunched! It currently just displays "Prism 22.10.13".

Posted by: Michael! 31st July 2013, 04:56 PM

OOOH THIS IS AMAZING!!

Is she releasing it the 13th or just premiering it?

It's going to be so hard to live up to Teenage Dream however AND the single choices.

What? Katy Perry had the most success out of all of them last time, Beyonce has the least success so how would Beyonce compete with Katy? :S GaGa/ Rihanna aren't usually as successful as Katy Perry, who is as relevant as Rihanna.

From the same press release that I found on Popjustice that I have just posted about in the single thread, this is what it says about the album:

QUOTE

KATY PERRY RETURNS!
CAPITOL RECORDS WILL RELEASE PERRY’S NEW ALBUM, PRISM, ON OCTOBER 22ND IN THE U.S. AND CANADA; OCTOBER 27TH IN THE REST OF THE WORLD PRISM IS THE FOLLOW-UP TO MULTI-PLATINUM STAR’S RECORD BREAKING SMASH TEENAGE DREAM

August 1, 2013 — New York, NY — Global pop superstar Katy Perry returns to set airwaves ablaze with a scorching brand-new single “ROAR,” which ignites radio with a surprise release on August 9. The single will be available for sale digitally worldwide on August 13.

The track will be a part of Perry's upcoming third studio album "PRISM," through Capitol Records, that will be released in October. The first run of the release will feature a limited edition lenticular cover. Full press release coming soon.

Yeah, but I guess I'm still a little bit unsure about whether her last era being so huge was a one-off or not. I just get the sense that Gaga and Rihanna have bigger hardcore followings than Katy does (I think a lot of her fans are more "casual") and possibly Beyonce too, and she defintely has a lower media profile than any of them, so I could potentially see her getting screwed over if the release schedule is as competitive as it's currently looking. Hopefully not though.

I can tell this era is going to be quite emotional, I think they'll be quite a lot of heartfelt ballads on there, although there'll still obviously be the trademark Katy pop smashes.

22nd US/Canada
23rd UK
20th Everything excluding the UK, US and Canada as y'all are the only ones running their charts from other days tongue.gif

Posted by: THEO. 3rd August 2013, 03:46 PM

The UK should be 21st if it's the same week as the US, although Teenage Dream was released six days after rather than one day earlier in the UK than the US, so I wouldn't be surprised if the same happened this time.

Bonnie McKee about Katy's second single

QUOTE
"It's kind of like every song is its own little movie," McKee told MTV News. "So ['Roar']is Rocky and also kind of jungle-y and cat-themed.

"And then each song has its own little movie and its own visual to go along with it. So I wouldn't say it's all going to be like this."

She added: "Like the next one, as far as I know, is going to be a big one too. I'm really excited for the next one. [The song is] really colourful and really bright."

(Not sure if this should get a seperate thread already)

There's Dark Horse and Walking On Air

Posted by: Calum Sandé 24th August 2013, 12:10 PM

Dark Horse lyrics:

So you wanna play with magic
Boy, you should know whatcha fallin' for
Baby, do you dare to do this
'Cause I'm coming atcha like a dark horse

Are you ready for, ready for
A perfect storm, perfect storm
'Cause once you're mine, once you're mine
There's no going back!

I know it's stupidto judge based on just lyrics, but that gives off an If You Can Afford Me vibe.

Walking On Air lyrics

Just when I think I can't take anymore
We go deeper and harder than ever before
We go higher and higher i feel like i'm already there

I'm walking on air tonight
I'm walking on air
I'm walking, I'm walking on air tonight

'Walking On Air' is much more to my taste than 'Dark Horse', but 'Dark Horse' sounds so much more interesting! So I voted for that one. Both sound promising, but nothing on 'Roar' or majority of 'Teenage Dream', judging by the clips. Hopefully she's released to of the "slightly above average" tracks as opposed to the very best on the album.

Posted by: d__ 25th August 2013, 07:43 AM

"Walking On Air" is far more interesting to me. Judging by the clips.

Can imagine it looking glorious in better quality and much more raw than her other covers.

Posted by: Calum Sandé 6th September 2013, 12:21 PM

Just Jared have previewed the album (apparently), and the track-list is:

1. Roar
2. Legendary Lovers
3. Birthday
4. Walking on Air
5. Unconditionally
6. Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)
7. This Is How We Do
8. International Smile
9. Ghost
10. Love Me
11. Double Rainbow
12. By the Grace of God

Legendary Lovers
- Sample lyrics: “Take me down to the river/ Underneath the ____/ Say my name like a scripture/ Keep my heart beating like a drum/ Legendary lovers, legendary lovers, legendary lovers”
- There’s a breakdown in the song that makes you want to belly dance. There’s a howl toward the end.. “Ah-who-o-o-o!”

Birthday
- Sample lyrics: “I’ll give you a taste/ Make you lick your body every day/ Give you something to satisfy… Give you something good to celebrate/ I know you like it sweet/ Make it like your birthday everyday.”
- The breakdown: “Let me get you in your birthday suit.”
- Song ends with a whisper, “happy birthday”

Walking on Air
- She was inspired by a “Central Park Day” where she was eating hot dogs with a friend and watching roller skaters perform to deep house music.
- Very 90′s dance divas a la CeCe Peniston and Crystal Waters.
- Sample lyrics: “Just when I think I can’t take anymore/ We go deeper and hotter than ever before/ We go higher and higher, I feel like I’m already there/ I’m walking on air tonight”

Unconditionally
- Sample lyrics: “Did I almost sin… all your insecurities…” Chorus: “Unconditional, unconditionally/ I will love you unconditionally. There is no fear now… I love you conditionally.”

Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)
- The urban song has Juicy rapping “She’s a beast” of Katy.
- Sample lyrics: “So you wanna play with magic/ Boy you should know what you’re falling for/ Baby do you dare to do this/ Cause I’m coming at you like a dark horse.. Are you ready for, ready for/ Perfect storm, perfect storm/ Cuz once you’re mine, once you’re mine”

This Is How We Do
- Club banger
- Sample lyrics: “Chanel this, Chanel that, hell yeah… Street stuntin’ ya we do it like that/ Yeah this is how we do.. Bring the beat back”

International Smile
- Upbeat, dancey song written for her DJ BFF Mia Moretti. Katy shared, “She travels all around the world. She’s my muse. Don’t tell my other friends.”
- Sample lyrics: “That girl’s a trip, one way ticket/ Takes you miles high, cause she’s got that one international smile.”

Double Rainbow
- Wrote this melodic mid-tempo song with Greg Kurstin and Sia.
- Sample lyrics: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure/ The two of us together… So if it’s up to me, I’m gonna keep you forever… Brighter than the Northern Lights… Like a double rainbow in the sky… double rainbow time flies”

By the Grace of God
- This ballad closes out the regular record.
- Sample lyrics: “Lay on the bathroom floor/ Couldn’t take it anymore… By the grace of God/ I looked in the mirror and decided to stay/ Wasn’t gonna let love take me out… I thank my sister for keeping my head above the water… Every morning, I finally see myself again… Universe calling my bluff”

I imagine the song Emeli wrote for her is on the deluxe edition, then, just like Half of Me in Rihanna's case.

Well Emeli has spoken a fair bit about it, and how great it was to work with Katy on the song, and they had a session for it, so I'm presuming it will be included in one way or another, whether that be on the standard (and she just hasn't been credited by Just Jared), or a song on the deluxe edition.

Agreed about the cover, though, that's beautiful, and looking forward to seeing it in HQ.

I really, really hate it. Horrible picture, horrible filter, horrible border and horrible font. My excitement has gone completely downhill after learning that Juicy J(?!) will feature on the second single and now this. I'm yet to watch the music video to "Roar" though, so hopefully it's not a third disappointment.

Dark Horse isn't the second single as far as I know? She said the pepsi track won't neccesary be an offficial single

It's highly likely that it will be though - just look at "The Edge Of Glory" and other 'promo' singles released a week before the album, they more often than not end up being the next single.

Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J) has been officially unveiled:

Can't listen as I'm at college just now, but can't wait to give this a listen when I get in! Sure it'll be amazing. wub.gif

Posted by: Jáhq 17th September 2013, 10:57 AM

Juicy J doesn't really add anything for me but his verse isn't awful. A few listens in and I'm still not sold on the verses and the beat they have but the chorus is pretty good.

Great contrast from 'Roar'.

Posted by: Calum Sandé 17th September 2013, 01:17 PM

I love that! wub.gif Not entirely keen on Juicy J's parts, but Katy's *.* The chorus is just amazing!

Really liking this. Love Katy going dark a la Who Am I Living For? and this fits into that so well.

Juicy J is just a big NO though and becoming the most annoying person around along with the fact he's EVERYWHERE too drama.gif

I'd honestly never heard of him before this song was announced tongue.gif

He's been on SO MANY major and not so major music release this and last year. The Weeknd, will.i.am, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, etc. Plus he released the album this year. He's really everywhere indeed! sad.gif

It's a weird one innit. I hope it grows on me. I can't seem to listen to it continuously.

Posted by: Eyes 17th September 2013, 10:34 PM

Dark Horse is SUBLIME. *.* Loving this so much more so than Roar, it's always fantastic to hear something a little left-field and this is just a beauty of a pop song. Currently got it on repeat.

Posted by: Rob Summers 18th September 2013, 02:15 PM

Well this is different ain't it. I'm liking it a lot of first listen and it doesn't sound like the type of song I'd normally like.

Posted by: Jonjo 19th September 2013, 02:40 AM

'Dark Horse' is quite incredible. Such a grower and once that beat hits you... my GOD. *.*

Posted by: JosephStyles 19th September 2013, 07:52 AM

Dark Horse is pretty good, apart from Juicy J's verse, he just totally ruins it for me. laugh.gif

Walking on Air will be released on 30 September. So excited, can't wait to hear it in full! wub.gif I definitely preferred that preview to the Dark Horse preview when I listened to them both, but Dark Horse exceeded my expectations, so good things to come I hope! happy.gif

Posted by: Silver Rocket 19th September 2013, 05:06 PM

I thought 'Walking On Air' sounding much better too.

Posted by: Liаm 19th September 2013, 07:36 PM

I preferred WOA from the clip as well, but Dark Horse is SERIOUSLY incredible and Roar is pretty much perfect - song of the year. If she keeps up to this standard... ohmy.gif

Posted by: Cal 20th September 2013, 08:59 AM

I don't get the appeal of 'Roar' AT ALL but 'Dark Horse' is bizarrely cool. It's the only song of hers that I've ever downloaded. I really like Juicy J's bit as well.

Posted by: Davidson 22nd September 2013, 11:38 PM

I really wasn't feeling 'Dark Horse' until I heard it in a club last night, when it drops was incredible.

Amazon have this as the deluxe track-listing:

1. Roar
2. Legendary Lovers
3. Birthday
4. Walking On Air
5. Unconditionally
6. Dark Horse (Feat. Juicy J)
7. This Is How We Do
8. International Smile
9. Ghost
10. Love Me
11. This Moment
12. Double Rainbow
13. By the Grace of God
14. Spiritual
15. It Takes Two
16. Choose Your Battles

'This Moment' (presumably a deluxe track) has been put before 'Double Rainbow' and 'By the Grace of God' instead of with the deluxe tracks. #pointlessinformation kink.gif

Not as good as Dark Horse or Roar, but still quite amazing wub.gif

Posted by: Cremey 30th September 2013, 09:04 AM

Definitely not as strong as the other two. What is up with the way she sings 'tonight' in the intro part?! Hahaha.
I like the beginning of the chorus 'I'm walking on air' part but that's about it at this stage.

Posted by: Calum Sandé 30th September 2013, 10:01 AM

That is amazing! wub.gif It was my favourite between itself and 'Dark Horse' based on the previews, and I feel the same now. It has the same KILLER final chorus like 'Dark Horse' and 'Roar' have = fabulous.

Posted by: HausofKubrick 30th September 2013, 04:05 PM

Really don't like Walking On Air at all. Seems like absolute filler material so quite shocked she chose it for a promo single unless it's just to show a different side to the album.

3 completely different songs so far though, no idea where this album is heading ohmy.gif

I love 'Walking on air', very big dance-pop tune !
And 'Dark horse' has grown on me a lot wub.gif

I love how the three covers make sense together ! Very beautiful !

Posted by: Robot 30th September 2013, 05:17 PM

It's another very good track, but a fair way off Dark Horse and Roar for me. I say this having listened to it quite a lot of times, rather than commenting on first listen like I did with Dark Horse. I do really really like it though. My favourite bit is actually the 'toni-eeet' weird bits, that people are saying is annoying.

Posted by: Davidson 30th September 2013, 05:17 PM

I love the overall feel of 'Walking In Air' and the 90's sound but melodically I feel it could be stronger.

I kinda agree with this really, the chorus feels like it could be a bit more punchier perhaps?

Posted by: Liаm 30th September 2013, 05:29 PM

It's nice and retro, very very 90s! But I agree the chorus could be punchier and it is defintiely the weakest of the 3 Prism tracks so far. Having said all that, another very very good track that reinforces my expectations for a really strong album!

Posted by: Regina 30th September 2013, 06:14 PM

I prefer this to Dark Horse actually laugh.gif but all 3 songs are fab.

Posted by: d__ 30th September 2013, 06:24 PM

tbh it's my favourite out of the three.

Posted by: Silver Rocket 30th September 2013, 06:34 PM

It's lots better than 'Dark Horse', but it's let down by a limp chorus.

I'm not anticipating the album as much now. sad.gif

Posted by: Robot 30th September 2013, 09:18 PM

'By The Grace Of God' was just performed at the iTunes Festival by her, beautiful song and clearly so raw and meaningful to her. Piano ballad, very reliant on vocals, and for someone who can be so shaky vocally, she delivered a really great performance of it.

Will upload if/when it gets to YouTube.

Posted by: Calum Sandé 30th September 2013, 09:22 PM

Ooh, looking forward to hearing that! wub.gif From what she's said it is really meaningful to her, so I suppose it'll be rather emotional too (live performances, etc). cry.gif

Fantastic first half, goes a bit soft during the second. I can tell 'This Is How We Do' and 'International Smile' are going to be on repeat though.

Posted by: HausofKubrick 17th October 2013, 04:47 PM

hmm i really think (and hope) this will be a big grower. The promo singles which i wasn't too keen on are sounding much better now, so hopefully that stands true for the rest of the album. It's a lot more ~mellow~ than i thought it would be and she's definitely showing a more subtle side on a lot of it, so none of the tracks are screaming out at me for that reason.

'Unconditionally' remains an absolute BEAST though and i'm excited for it's release.

Posted by: d__ 17th October 2013, 07:46 PM

The album is like a mesh of her first two albums.

Saying that, it's not that great. I hope it grows.

I don't really like Unconditionally ... oops.

Posted by: Jack 18th October 2013, 12:14 AM

This Is How We Do is amazing though ... my new drunk jam, like an updated Last Friday Night lyrically. "This is for all my girls who went home with a 10 and woke up with a 2" wub.gif.

YAY for the 'This Is How We Do' love *.*

Properly loving this album though. She really brought it this era for me wub.gif

Posted by: Calum Sandé 18th October 2013, 11:04 AM

I'm not really getting the 'This Is How We Do' love, tbh? It's probably the weakest on the album IMO.

I cannot get enough of 'Legendary Lovers'. Of course it's very different, but it kind of makes me think this is her 'Where Have You Been'. The lyrics where she sings "TAKE ME DOWN TO THE RIVER" are just amazing!

Rate ~

10 Roar
11 Legendary Lovers
09 Birthday
10 Walking on Air
10 Unconditionally
10 Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)
05 This Is How We Do
09 International Smile
10 Ghost
10 Love Me
10 This Moment
10 Double Rainbow
10 By the Grace of God
09 Spiritual
10 It Takes Two
09 Choose Your Battles

I cannot explain why it is so loony, but the album really is fantastic. kink.gif Top 5 would have to be: Legendary Lovers, Unconditionally, Dark Horse, This Moment, It Takes Two - they're all fantastic! wub.gif

Posted by: Scherz 18th October 2013, 02:00 PM

I don't think the album is all that great really sad.gif I wanted to really love it.
But it feels a bit like, with some of the songs anyway, that they've struggled to find choruses.
And then just made the chorus to the song an elongated version of words..
Legendary Lovers, Walking on Air, Unconditionally, International Smile & Spiritual are all guilty of this.

I don't find the songs as instant as before.. hopefully they take time to grow.
With Teenage Dream you could have imagined every track (more or less) as a single and I can't do that here.

01 Walking On Air
02 This Is How We Do
03 Dark Horse
04 Birthday
05 Roar
06 Unconditionally

The rest are shit or I just cannot be bothered to listen properly yet. That top 6 is near flawless though, they all need to be singles.

Rank time.

01 By the Grace of God
02 Choose Your Battles
03 Unconditionally
04 Double Rainbow
05 Legendary Lovers

06 It Takes Two
07 Ghost
08 Roar
09 Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)
10 This Is How We Do
11 Love Me

12 International Smile
13 Spiritual
14 Birthday
15 This Moment
16 Walking on Air

Loving this album. Definitely seems more mature than her previous material (even though I hate music being described as that).
It's all about that top 5 for me at the moment. Could do without the last three at the moment but there is potential for 'Birthday' and 'This Moment' to grow I suppose...

'By the Grace of God' is phenomenal.

How can anyone rate Walking On Air last?! sad.gif

Posted by: Calum Sandé 19th October 2013, 11:06 AM

Been listening to this all day and 'Walking on Air' seems a lot weaker than it originally was, but definitely not the worst on the album. sad.gif

Ranking ~

01 | Legendary Lovers
02 | Unconditionally
03 | It Takes Two
04 | This Moment
05 | Double Rainbow
06 | Ghost
07 | By the Grace of God
08 | Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)
09 | Spiritual
10 | Choose Your Battles
11 | Roar
12 | Walking on Air
13 | Birthday
14 | Love Me
15 | International Smile
16 | This Is How We Do

I just do not get 'This Is How We Do' at all, it's really poor (and quite annoying). Such a shame to rank 'Roar' as low as that too because it really is sensational, but the rest of the album... wub.gif

Posted by: Cremey 19th October 2013, 11:07 AM

Easily! The intro completely kills it and I can't stand the chorus! sad.gif

I need to listen to this properly today, but oh my days By The Grace of God is fabulous <3 Unconditionally challenges Roar for song of the year too.

Posted by: Jark 19th October 2013, 11:34 AM

I don't trust people who don't love 90s dance. Walking on Air has grown in light of the album being mostly uninspired, faceless and hamstrung by weak songwriting.

Birthday is fantastic though (the whispered part aside). Tres joyous.

Very impressed! Better than One Of The Boys but of course it can't touch Teenage Dream. Fighting with Demi for the best album of the year title (although ARTPOP will probably challenge that biggrin.gif)! She has some wonderful single choices here, obviously Unconditionally will be big and then there's the two promo singles, Birthday, This Is How We Do, International Smile and maybe Legendary Lovers!

manson.gif Good luck with that!! tongue.gif

My top 5 in no particular order:

"Unconditionally"
"Legendary Lovers"
"Dark Horse"
"This Is How We Do"
"Walking On Air"

I also really like "Roar", "Birthday", "Double Rainbow", "Spiritual" & "This Moment". The rest are either good or just ok. ^^

I REALLY like this album it's very much a grower. Walking on air for single 3 please

Posted by: Robot 21st October 2013, 03:19 PM

Very consistently strong but is lacking on one that I find AMAZING, the two singles aside. But, still, really love this album.

11 Roar
08.5 Legendary Lovers
09.5 Birthday
09.0 Walking On Air
09.5 Unconditionally
09.0 Dark Horse (ft. Juicy J)
09.0 This Is How We Do
09.5 International Smile
07.5 Ghost
07.0 Love Me
08.5 This Moment
07.0 Double Rainbow
09.0 By The Grace Of God
07.5 Spiritual
09.5 It Takes Two
07.5 Choose Your Battles

Birthday, International Smile and It Takes Two being my 3 favourites of the new songs. Birthday MUST be a single though.

You can REALLY hear the Swedish influence on all of this. Eh.

Posted by: Acoustic 22nd October 2013, 09:40 AM

I'm loving this album! By the Grace of God is one of best songs she's ever done.

Legendary Lovers is currently my favourite. International Smile would be a perfect single.

Posted by: Liаm 22nd October 2013, 09:42 AM

This Is How We Do and especially International Smile have REALLY grown on me! It's just absolutely amazing as an album though, I think it may have dethroned Demi as album of the year ohmy.gif

Posted by: Robot 22nd October 2013, 11:42 AM

Glad to finally see some more International Smile love - although it probably would be a poor single choice as it falls just over the line of being too cheesy.

I think it should be:

3) Birthday
4) Dark Horse
5) Legendary Lovers
(if need be) 6) By The Grace Of God

Posted by: Ryan. 22nd October 2013, 12:45 PM

The album gets better and better with every listen! wub.gif For me, the singles after 'Roar' and 'Unconditionally' should be 'Walking On Air', 'Birthday' and either (or both) of 'Dark Horse' and 'Legendary Lovers'.

Each time I listen to 'International Smile' I always think of Scooch's 'Flying The Flag (For You)', but aside from that small part of the song that is one of my favourites too!

Still loving this album and it's been pretty much the only thing I've listened to all week (bar 'Underneath the Tree' or 'Beneath Your Beautiful' by Tamera (and now 'Do What You Want' by GaGa)

10.0 'Roar'
08.5 'Legendary Lovers'
08.0 'Birthday'
10.0 'Walking On Air'
10.0 'Unconditionally'
10.0 'Dark Horse'
10.0 'This Is How We Do'
08.0 'International Smile'
08.0 'Ghost'
08.5 'Love Me'
09.0 'This Moment'
09.0 'Double Rainbow' >> This reminds me of 'Pearl'! <<
10.0 'By the Grace of God'
08.5 'Spiritual'
10.0 'It Takes Two'
10.0 'Choose Your Battles'

I'd love these to be singles -

1. Roar
2. Uncondtionally
3. Walking On Air
4. Legendary Lovers
5. By The Grace Of God
6. Dark Horse

01 | Roar
02 | Unconditionally
03 | Legendary Lovers
04 | Dark Horse
05 | Birthday

I'd say:

Roar
Unconditionally
This Is How We Do
Dark Horse
Walking On Air/Birthday
then possibly By The Grace Of God

10 Roar
10 Legendary Lovers
08 Birthday
08 Walking On Air
11 Unconditionally
09 Dark Horse
10 This Is How We Do
09 International Smile
10 Ghost

This would be amazing release schedule.

'Unconditionally', 'Legendary Lovers', 'Dark Horse' and 'Birthday' are by far the best on the album and the first 2 are, for me, up with the best songs Katy has ever recorded. The beat in 'Dark Horse' is just so infectious and 'Birthday' is great catchy fun too. Shame 'Roar' still remains a pile of shit though.

Didn't heard this album. Can you recommend "Prism" for me ?
How good new album in compare with "One Of The Boys" ?

Posted by: Silver Rocket 25th October 2013, 10:09 PM

Much better, not that it's difficult.

Posted by: gooddelta 25th October 2013, 10:21 PM

It's a shame One Of The Boys gets so much stick, it's one of my favourite albums, It's not packed with wall to wall smashes like Teenage Dream, granted, but all of the singles were very strong, as are Self Inflicted, One Of The Boys and If You Can Afford Me whilst Ur So Gay has a catchy charm to it. The rest of the tracks are above average too aside from maybe Fingerprints.

As for Prism, I like it a lot, sure it's more of a grower type album than Teenage Dream but it has some strong songs throughout. A few of them feel a little formulaic, but that was to be expected after the huge success of the previous era, she didn't want to mess too much with the formula and that's understandable. It certainly shows signs of progression in places (Dark Horse, By The Grace Of God) but the big future pop hits are all still present and correct, although I'd be surprised if she manages to pull as many hits off it as she did with Teenage Dream. Dark Horse, Unconditionally, Birthday and at a stretch This Is How We Do and Legendary Lovers sound like potential smashes but I can't imagine anything else taking off as a single.

Posted by: Jack 25th October 2013, 11:26 PM

Walking On Air will be huge regardless of peoples opinions of it, trust me.

Posted by: Calum Sandé 25th October 2013, 11:58 PM

I doubt it. It didn't perform that well at all in comparison to 'Dark Horse' (that managing top 40 here as a promo single, while 'Walking on Air' didn't - I don't think it'd have the amount of success that people imagine it would either). If she were to pick one of the two to be released as a single from the album, it'd probably be 'Dark Horse'.

Posted by: Jack 26th October 2013, 01:00 AM

No one really cares about promo singles though ... Unconditionally hasnt performed as good as Dark Horse yet either, not to say it wont be big though.

As soon as a video is released and its set out to radio, it will be huge. Clubs will be all over it too.

'Unconditionally' wasn't released as a promo single alongside 'Dark Horse' though, so there's no comparison to be made there. laugh.gif With 'Walking on Air' however, there is.

Posted by: Jonjo 26th October 2013, 01:28 AM

'Walking On Air' was chart inegliable wasn't it? Or did it make top 75? ohmy.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 26th October 2013, 08:10 AM

Yeah Walking On Air was chart ineligible for the same reason that the Gaga/R Kelly single will be this week. I'm willing to eat my words if it becomes a huge hit single but it seems a little lightweight to become massive. I naturally LOVE the 90s vibe of the production on it but the it doesn't have as strong a melody/chorus as a typical Katy smash would have so I think it would struggle to catch on.

Posted by: Liаm 26th October 2013, 10:14 PM

Unconditionally and Walking On Air are the obvious smashes on the album tbh, in the same way as Roar was.

This album is a huge let down. She made it out as though this was going to be sone huge artistic change for her, but no. I'm not saying it's a bad album, but it's like "Teenage Dream", rehashed.

"Dark Horse" is the only amazing thing on the album.

Posted by: Davidson 28th October 2013, 08:50 PM

Anyone who doesn't think 'Birthday' wouldn't be a hit of epic proportions needs to rethink their lives. I personally can't wait till August 2014 when it's the only thing you will ever hear on the radio.

Posted by: Silver Rocket 19th November 2013, 02:14 PM

I did think 'Walking On Air' was really limp, but it's grown on me so much. Quite loving it now!

Posted by: Escapar82 20th November 2013, 12:09 AM

"Prism" is my favourite album this year!!! It has a lot of gems. Katy has always the most exciting pop songs. My favourite songs of "Prism" are "Roar", "Unconditionally", "Choose You Battle" and "It Takes Too". The latter needs to be an official single. I'm sure that it will be a smash hit. "Choose You Battle" is epic with these military-like drums. Could we have a Katy album every year like Rihanna..?

Posted by: slowdown73 28th November 2013, 03:26 PM

I really like the album..its definately a grower. Not as poppy as the last album but still some good songs on it!

Posted by: Danny 13th December 2013, 01:30 AM

It seems 'Dark Horse' is officially the 3rd single...apparently going to US radio in January.

'Unconditionally' has now completely stalled there now and looks certain to be her smallest hit there since 'Thinking Of You'.

Posted by: Jonjo 13th December 2013, 01:34 AM

Nice and quick! biggrin.gif Amazing choice too (if it's true!). It seems people just don't warm to Katy's ballads! 'Thinking Of You', 'The One That Got Away' and now 'Unconditionally' seem to have underperformed in comparison to the songs before them. I don't think 'Wide Awake' is particularly remembered either. sad.gif It's a shame as they are really beautiful!

Posted by: Calum Sandé 13th December 2013, 02:40 AM

So gutted that 'Unconditionally' has underperformed big time. sad.gif Hopefully there's still a chance for her over here what with The X Factor and Chatty Man, although I doubt it'll trouble the top 5 at this point.

'Dark Horse' as the third single is the most sensible option. The video for that is going to be FANTASTIC, I can just tell. *.*

'Legendary Lovers' really needs to be single #4 though.

Posted by: *Tim 13th December 2013, 08:33 AM

Dark Horse is already gaining over a million in audience a day and is doing better than Unconditionally on Itunes in the US cheer.gif

Posted by: Danny 20th January 2014, 07:39 PM

So I just heard the three bonus tracks for the first time... and ALL THREE are better than a good number of tracks on the main tracklist. Admittedly I can understand why 'Spiritual' and 'It Takes Two' were left off since, good songs though they are, they do come off as her trying to do Dido and Emeli Sande impersonations, but there's simply no excuse for excluding 'Choose Your Battles' in favour of dreck like 'This Moment' and 'Love Me'.

Posted by: Calum Sandé 20th January 2014, 07:53 PM

If there's any standard track she should have binned in favour of a deluxe track it's 'This Is How We Do'. Complete trash.

Posted by: Jonjo 22nd January 2014, 02:37 AM

Agreed, Joseph. As an album, 'Prism' is better and has a nice, consistent flow to it. But 'Teenage Dream' most certainly has the massive hits/"higher highs".

no. i have it.

i like it but not as much as this one- i guess because on her last album, so many of the songs just got overplayed. last friday night, firework, teenage dream, california girls, and the theme was diffrent. to me anyway, the last album sounded more like it focussed on summer themes. at least a few of those tracks focused on summer

with this album, i can relate more to the lyrics so i like it more. i like to think of roar as like her statement of freedom, you know, it does not matter what you do to me, how much you break me down, i'm going to come back even stronger than before!

another song i forgot to mention was this moment, gives an important message.. tomorrow is not promised to any of us

and i love unconditional. it does not matter how you are, you will be loved unconditionally an that's how it should be

One Of The Boys beats both albums in a big way though.

Posted by: Silver Rocket 22nd January 2014, 12:57 PM

I'd say Teenage Dream is pretty much a perfect once in a career era for someone like her, very solid album. Prism is decent but very "7/10" throughout mostly, a few fillers in there too.

The first album is unspeakable.

Posted by: Danny 22nd January 2014, 06:42 PM

I think Teenage Dream is the strongest set of individual songs, but as a whole body of work, I think One of the Boys is her best album. Although it has fewer outstanding songs than TD has, at the same time it has less filler and a lot more personality and distinctiveness.

Prism is a step back in both respects really: pretty generic like Teenage Dream was, but with less outstanding songs and even more filler.

Exactly right.

Teenage Dream is an amazing album, I love it, and probably her peak. Everything, the styling, the music, the highs just all worked so well for her at that point in her career, too. I doubt she can match it again. Prism is nice but not close to Teenage Dream.

OOTB is an awful album, like vocally, she sounds bad. It's missing melodies. Bar the hits, it's like a Linda Perry or Cathy Dennis album that never hit the shelves, rightfully so.

Posted by: Robot 23rd January 2014, 07:08 PM

She'll struggle to top Teenage Dream for me; Circle The Drain is the only one I'm not as bothered about, aside from that, I'd have been happy for ALL of the others to be released and I'm not really one to just throw careless 09.5 / 10 ratings in every 'artist rate'. Prism is pretty good and does flow better, but I don't listen to it as much as an album anymore, instead just picking out my selected favourites (basically just the first half of the album).

This. I can't listen to it, especially Thinking of You. Those vocals are Pink-esque screech. My least favourite Katy song. But that's ok as it was her first album, improving vocally, etc, I just won't listen to it.

'This Is How We Do' is the next single in Australia!

And hopefully it remains exclusive to Australia. Easily the worst song on the album ('Spiritual' aside).

Posted by: Silver Rocket 30th January 2014, 10:10 AM

For me that's one of the album's highlights, I'd say 'Walking On Air' should be released first (and probably end the campaign on that) but that would be my next best choice. Catchy and fun.

Posted by: d__ 30th January 2014, 05:27 PM

WOA would be a perfect single for summer.

Posted by: Robot 30th January 2014, 06:10 PM

I'm still unsure about Walking On Air for some reason sad.gif I'd still personally prefer Legendary Lovers or Birthday, and since Unconditionally, I'm really unsure how she'd fare as I wouldn't have predicted that flopping.

Posted by: Jonjo 10th February 2014, 05:49 PM

I know I keep saying but I really am struggling to see what makes 'Birthday' so "single worthy"? sad.gif It's average to me and I think it'd do worse than 'Unconditionally' did. 'Legendary Lovers' is also overrated and "meh" at times too, but for some reason I can see that doing fairly well for her.

Posted by: d__ 10th February 2014, 07:06 PM

i'm hoping she re-releases "Unconditionally" wink.gif

Otherwise... my single choices:

01. Roar
02. Unconditionally
03. Dark Horse
04. Walking On Air (Beginning of summer)
05. This Is How We Do (End of summer)
06. Legendary Lovers or Birthday

I mean really... there's so many choices.

Posted by: Michael! 11th February 2014, 11:00 PM

I don't get Walkin on Air at all, one of me least faves.

Gotta be:

4. (4th single discussion already, can ya believe!!) Legendary Luurvas
5. Birthday

Posted by: d__ 24th February 2014, 11:23 AM

Apparently "Birthday" has been sent to a US radio.

Posted by: *Tim 24th February 2014, 03:07 PM

I doubt they'll send a new song to radio already so this is probabky just being played, like many of Rihanna's album tracks were.

The next single should be WOA or LL anyway

Posted by: Danny 24th February 2014, 03:57 PM

'Birthday' is by FAR the best choice for 4th single I think. Then I want 'Legendary Lovers' after that--even if that one wouldn't be a massive hit, that's the type of slightly left-field song that might gain her more credibility, drab insipid ballads like 'Unconditionally' won't do that.

Posted by: Robot 24th February 2014, 04:45 PM

I'm actually with Danny on this one, I'm still feeling sceptical of how well a song like Walking On Air would even do, especially without a huge chorus imo. Birthday -> Legendary Lovers would be my ideal way to close out this album and I think 'Birthday' would do really well actually, gives me vibes of 'Treasure' which did pretty well.

Posted by: JosephStyles 24th February 2014, 05:02 PM

I'm not sure I'd be massive on Legendary Lovers being a single, would definitely prefer Walking On Air. Not sure Katy's someone who really cares much about credibility either. laugh.gif Although I'd say Dark Horse is quite credible anyway.

Posted by: d__ 7th March 2014, 05:06 PM

"Legendary Lovers" will be a single at some point this year. With it's sound I can see it having a sequel video to "Dark Horse".

Posted by: mr_aly 7th March 2014, 05:32 PM

I don't see how 'Legendary Lovers' would work as a single, it's totally flat and not even catchy.

'Walking On Air' would be the ideal choice I think, but even if it's 'Birthday' that wouldn't be the worst choice.

Posted by: d__ 10th March 2014, 01:53 PM

"Birthday" is single four, appaz.

"Walking On Air" will make a great mid to late summer release.

Appalling taste right thur.

Walking on Air is retro trash.

Lewgendar Lovers is catchy, powerful and not far removed from... what's that? Smash-hit U.S no.1 E.T?

I'm sure that was just sent to Australian radio (or something along those lines).

There are so many better single choices than 'Birthday' however - namely 'Legendary Lovers' and 'Walking on Air'.

This album is more of a grower and less instant than the last album. I didn't like it at first but it has grown on me considerably. I think it does lack obvious singles potential compared to the last album but its still a good album, just a change of direction.

'California Gurls' was a cheap rip off of 'TiK ToK', really. The video made it worthwhile though.

No, so much better than tik Tok and sums up American summer.

Posted by: slowdown73 6th September 2014, 06:57 PM

Does anybody think Prism will be re-released before the end of the year with a few extra tracks to try and boost sales? I think it might as its only sold about 350k to date and can't see many other singles apart from walking on air making a big impact now.

Posted by: mr_aly 6th September 2014, 07:08 PM

I can't see it happening this year. Maybe before next summer when 3 more singles have been released.

Posted by: SB. 7th September 2014, 11:46 AM

Makes sense, similar repeat of her last era.

Posted by: pippa 8th September 2014, 08:53 AM

I believe Prism will get a re-release and i would expect it to be this year. The album has under-performed and i am positive expectations were much higher. Granted she has had 2 huge hits of the album but they have not transformed that success into big album sales. I initially believed the album would manage 500,000 sales with ease, the result was it struggled to make platinum.

Posted by: Heezus 8th September 2014, 10:21 AM

I think if it gets re-released it'll be this Christmas. There are no more hit songs on the album to keep the public going until next Christmas. Even releasing the fan favourites Walking on Air & Legendary Lovers wouldn't do much considering how few people buy singles #6 and #7. Aren't they supposed to aim for top 5 hits?

Posted by: slowdown73 8th September 2014, 12:58 PM

I think the album's run out of steam and a re-release with extra tracks before Christmas will help it ease past the 500k mark but can't see it shifting a million like her last album. Although I do like prism, it lacks potential singles unlike the last album.

Only 350K? Thats still good. The massive success of Teenage Dream was a fluke IMO, kind alike Breakaway was for Kelly Clarkson. Katy is still selling more albums than alot of other artists around today. She was never gonna top TD.

This. Unbelievable people thought Prism would even come close to TD. It would surprise me if it matched even 50%.

Teenage Dream is 2010, it's KATY'S year, her peak, working so effortlessly with her entire persona. Roar and Dark Horse felt like a natural continuation of that, but Unconditionally and Birthday (and now this one) have really let it down and seem ... sporadic in comparison to the focus and blend of TD.

Posted by: HausofKubrick 8th September 2014, 05:19 PM

Yeah, completely agree with Regina. 'PRISM' has done very well and comparing it to 'Teenage Dream' commercially (and musically smile.gif) is ridiculous. She'll never match those sales especially in the current climate.

I would be wholly against a rerelease. The album took its time but the way it is now just WORKS, wonderfully. I don't even mind if she milks it for all it's worth and we get 'Legendary Lovers' then 'Walking On Air' and then goodness knows what else. Just don't want a tacky 'Part of Me 2' taking away from a solid album like 'Confection' did for the previous one.

Posted by: Rate Slayerrrrrr 8th September 2014, 05:31 PM

If Wide Awake and Dressin' Up had been on the first part or a separate EP, ,much better.

Had One That Got Away broken the record in the first place, those 2 songs would've probably been on the next album without a re-release.

Boo!

Posted by: ROBOT 8th September 2014, 05:33 PM

Yeah, I'd be down for a re-release if we get a fair amount of tracks which were pretty stellar themselves. As much as I love(d) Part Of Me, it topped my personal chart in January 2011 after falling in love with the demo. I don't want her to just throw her left-overs onto an album, and I don't think she could afford to do that now - she's still one of the top females but she can't just sell on name alone quite how she could during Teenage Dream. A re-release ONLY if the material is top notch.

I do wish she'd stop milking Prism though, even I, as a huge fan, would find it hard to throw myself massively behind a sixth single from this album (and I love Legendary Lovers), although the idea of a re-mastered Walking On Air sounds pretty mighty, so that could help.

Justice for Walking on Air

Posted by: Jordan Lee 7th October 2019, 12:28 PM

Legendary Lovers is still the best song on this album for me.

Crazy how that wasn’t a single.

As a whole it’s like an album of two halves for me it has its moments but it’s not as strong as a whole as Teenage Dream it’s in the same vein as her debut for me but some of the album tracks on this are really good.

With how much discussion the new album is getting and the many games that have been played with Teenage Dream, I'm interested to see how people's opinions on this album as a whole have changed.

My personal ranking would be this:

01 // Walking On Air
02 // By The Grace Of God
03 // Love Me
04 // Double Rainbow
05 // This Moment
06 // Dark Horse
07 // This Is How We Do
08 // Unconditionally
09 // International Smile
10 // Ghost
11 // Roar
12 // Birthday
13 // Legendary Lovers
14 // Choose Your Battles
15 // It Takes Two
16 // Spiritual

I personally feel like this album was a slow burner and when it came through, bloody hell did it come through, I actually think it's my favourite album on the whole while I may prefer a couple of tracks from the first two albums. It's also a shining example of an album full of songs that should. Have. Been. Singles.

Walking On Air is such a bop and I heard it as a student in so many bars and it hits even harder after a few drinks. The following few songs are all outstanding ballads and really connect with me, and don't see enough appreciation I find.

Posted by: Nina West 20th October 2020, 01:59 PM

Here is my track by track review of Prism. After seeing this thread pop up again, I decided to give this another listen (first time in 4 years), so here goes...

01. Roar
I think everybody knows this by now (if you do not then where have you been). Probably the best track to not only kick-start this album, but to lead this campaign with what could only be described as typical Katy Perry power pop, with its empowering lyrics, punchy chorus & instantly memorable hooks that YES is very cliché & this did get overhyped & played to death, but that’s what happens with all massive hits & this is no exception. However, it is still a great song & a firm career standout.

02. Legendary Lovers
The second track takes on a somewhat different sound to a lot of her previous material. The song begins with an instrumental that has a Bollywood feel which gives it a spiritual vibe & backed by tribal, jungle-like percussion in the midsection. One of the most creative & strongest numbers on this album. This should have been a single.

03. Birthday
A fun poppy number that is quite reminiscent of her earlier songs with a catchy tongue in cheek verses & chorus with some uplifting synths. I can see why this was chosen as a single as it feels very tailor made for the radio. But that does not work in its favour as this feels very lightweight.

04. Walking on Air
Katy goes down the Eurodance route with this 90’s house inspired banger with some tinges of EDM thrown in there, while still being very much on the Pop side of things. This has to be one of the best things she is ever recorded with its very euphoric chorus that could have easily been a smash hit on the charts. (This would have been my choice for single #4 over the previous track).

05. Unconditionally
The first of many, many ballads on this album, but this is definitely one of the better ones) if not the BEST ONE). This romantic yet emotionally powerful anthem that explores a new chapter in her life rather than dwelling on the past. Love the way she lets rip on the uplifting chorus set against some beautiful production. A great choice for single #2, even if not everybody agrees.

06. Dark Horse
The OTHER big chart smash from this album with its catchy mix of pop from Katy with a hip-hop verse from rapper, Juicy J. Set against some moody Pop/Trap beats which makes this not only one of the darkest songs she has ever done, yet interesting & dare I say it BEST. A firm contender for a single release If I ever heard one, especially thanks to its stellar production values & Katy’s fierce vocals that makes this an all-round amazing number.

07. This is How We Do
This is a nice enough catchy party tune that seems to be aimed at a younger demographic & focuses on partying. However, in comparison to many of the other songs on the album, it does not have the same creativity, but still manages to have a fun chorus even if the lyrics are quite basic. Honestly don’t think this really worked as a single, especially when there are much better tracks such as ‘WOA’ or ‘LL’.

08. International Smile
Another fun party anthem that has that’s very familiar Katy Perry formula that doesn’t really break any new ground, but the disco mid-section makes for a joyful experience. This may be a filler moment, but a pretty good one at that.

09. Ghost
This & track 10 kinda blends into one for me & this is where the album starts to lose momentum. The track is one of the most revealing of the album, focusing on the end of their relationship. The song starts slow & starts to build some tension but doesn’t really go anywhere interesting.

10. Love Me
Another personal track that gives you an insight into Katy’s personal relationships with some nice soft rhythm’s that gives it an ethereal feel. But at the same time, it doesn’t really stand out & kinda gets lost in the shuffle when compared to the album’s more showier numbers.

11. This Moment
The pace picks up with this bold 80’s inspired electro-pop track, powered by a thumping beat. I feel that this often gets overlooked & its not hard to see why, it lacks that certain something needed that could have made this even better.

12. Double Rainbow
The song is wistful & whimsical, thanks to Katy’s vocals with some well-crafted lyrics. While she makes a fairly good effort at hitting those higher notes, but her voice sounds a little too thin to stretch that far. Still a very decent track though.

13. By the Grace of God
Probably the most emotional song on the album & a fantastic way to close the standard edition of this album with this slow piano power ballad that’s nothing like any of Katy's previous work and it deals with her heartbreak in a somewhat positive way as-well as portraying another side to Katy that we never seen before & its stunning.

Not gonna do the bonus tracks as I felt they weren't really needed & none of them stand out to me. So just gonna stick with the standard edition as it was fine as it was.
