QUOTE
The BBC has announced it plans to stop airing CBBC and BBC Four as traditional broadcast channels.

Director-general Tim Davie announced the content of these networks will continue to be produced and made available for online platforms.

This means they would only be available on BBC iPlayer, with Radio 4 Extra moving to BBC Sounds, rather than via their traditional broadcast outlets.

He added that the corporation's two news channels will be merged into one.

The corporation currently has two different news networks for UK and World audiences, and the changes are part of cost-saving measures, which the BBC said are part of a plan to create a "modern, digital-led and streamlined organisation".

The changes announced on Thursday would mean cuts of £200m year and the reorganisation of services which prioritise digital platforms.

In January the latest licence fee settlement was announced which will keep it at £159 a year for two years and then rise in line with inflation.

Overall, the plans could mean up to 1,000 job losses in the publicly-funded part of the corporation over the next few years.

Mr Davie said the BBC would consult with trade unions on the proposals.

sad.gif I hope the TOTP re-runs will move to BBC2 rather than just iPlayer only - I mean, I did used to watch them online before I started making the effort to catch them on linear TV (when I can), but now I enjoy the experience (as do my parents and grandparents) and there's a real community feel online when they're on.

I can definitely see TOTP re-runs move to BBC Two. I don’t know the ratings but it seems one of the most popular shows on the channel.

Tbh I think most of what BBC Four does now will be what BBC Two does in the future. I think they’ll be less original commissions for BBC Two, a lot of their original content has already moved to BBC One and it seems an easier cost saving measure.

CBBC is the least cost effective channel in terms of proportion of spending to viewership so it again seems an easy cut to make but I think it removes a vital service that the BBC provides, particularly in terms of education. This is what happens when certain decisions are taken, some of the more vital and important public services are taken away as they’re not as commercially sustainable in the context of having to make so many cuts.

It does seem very awkward in the context of BBC Three returning a few months ago, especially with the dire viewing figures. I wonder if there might be some reversal of decisions along the way, with one of the proposed axed services being saved after public outcry in favour of the axing again of BBC Three.

Remember that in the last wave of big cuts, it was 6Music and Asian Network that were going to be axed but both were ultimately saved with 6Music growing and growing and growing.

Seems a bit unfair on the kids, although I've no idea if kids watch CBBC any more. When I was a kid it was generally our least favourite option as it was always a bit preachy.

It's been noted in the past that it would cost a lot more money to put Top of the Pops reruns on BBC Two so I would be surprised if it does move there.

Anyone who has spent time in secondary school history lessons recently will know how much Horrible Histories has done to make it a popular subject.

I feared that BBC4's days as a "proper" were numbered once BBC3 came back from being online only.

I had a feeling that BBC4 might be on the end of its legs as it's become more of a heritage channel showing repeats rather than commissioning new shows - not that I don't want to see Yes Minister & Keeping Up Appearances again, there's other channels that could do that instead. It's a pity, as there's some shows that would never have existed without BBC4 - "Only Connect" is the sort of esoteric quiz that could only have been commissioned by BBC4, and it's now on BBC2 owing it its surprise success. "The Thick of It" also started on BBC4 as well, and is the most well regarded political sitcoms of the 21st century.
