34 ~ Taylor Swift - Shake It Off
(4-4-6-4-5-3-3-4-2-5-3-5-12-18-26-32-29-32-15-...)
1707pts ~ 19wks

Queen Taylor Swift released the highly anticipated first single from fifth album 1989 as an OA/OS release in August last year and unsurprisingly, it shot right up the chart to #4 on its first week. Throughout almost all of its run, the track was hindered by streaming. For a few weeks that came about a little while after release, the song was available on Spotify and was doing extremely well, but it got removed along with her entire back catalogue and it declined very quickly down the chart. Oops. The track is definitely one of the most fun hits of last year and dominated the latter half of the year, what with 12 weeks in the top 6!

33 ~ Duke Dumont - I Got U [feat. Jax Jones]
(1-2-3-6-8-18-19-20-26-26-32-33-34-38-39-41-40-45-51-60-57-63-73-79-81-79-93-72-80-x)
1710pts ~ 29wks

Duke Dumont reached #1 in early 2013 with debut hit Need U (100%), featuring Aquafina vetoed artist A*M*E. I Got U, the follow up, was released over a year later, but that didn't hinder its success and was another easy #1 for Duke. The same cannot be said for third single Won't Shriek Back but that was awful so that might explain why. I Got U featured some contribution from Jax Jones, not sure what, as well as Kelli-Leigh's uncredited vocals. It was her first #1 of 2014 and her most successful - I Wanna Feel by Secondcity did considerably worse.

34 ~ Beyoncé - BEYONCÉ
(...-3-2-3-3-3-5-4-7-5-6-12-20-16-20-22-26-31-27-43-48-61-76-98-x(2)-83-x(8)-60-61-x(11)-65-x(3)-93-...)
1925pts ~ 28wks

Tracks in singles list:
37 Drunk In Love (feat. Jay-Z)
98 XO
239 7/11
343 Pretty Hurts
503 Partition
547 Flawless (feat. Nicki Minaj)
623 Ring Off
648 Mine (feat. Drake)

As we all know, Beyoncé shocked everyone by releasing her self-titled fifth studio album out of absolutely nowhere at the end of 2013. It hung around in the top 10 for a huge amount of time and looked a bit like it was having good longevity but ended up dropping quickly, partly due to none of the singles bar Drunk In Love really making any kind of impact. Annoyingly, the version of (***)Flawless that made the top 100 was not the one with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She's been well and truly robbed of a chart hit cry.gif

33 ~ Elbow - The Take Off And Landing Of Everything
(1-5-7-9-11-7-8-10-20-21-27-39-45-49-58-19-28-40-21-25-28-22-28-37-56-75-62-x)
1969pts ~ 27wks

Tracks in singles list:
none

Elbow shot to #1 in the album chart early last year despite tough competition from Paloma Faith and ended up with a relatively successful album, although not one of the biggest #1 albums of the year. Paloma's A Perfect Contradiction has actually outsold it by quite a way now. Poor Paloma, it's not the first time this has happened - she was beaten to #1 in 2012 with her album Fall To Grace, by Gary Barlow's Commonwealth thing. smile.gif Anyway, onto Elbow. Actually, scratch that, I literally know nothing else about this album and won't pretend to ph34r.gif

43 ~ Eagles - Selected Works 1972-1999

1503pts ~ 39wks

Tracks in singles list:
none

This album was apparently released in 2000 (as you may have guessed from the title) but it didn't make any sort of impression on the chart until the end of 2013. From then onwards it remained a near constant presence in the top 100 for nearly a year, eventually reaching as high as #28. I have no idea why. I'm not hugely familiar with Eagles' output but 'Hotel California' is a good song at least.

Epic fail time sad.gif

I really should have mentioned this Eagles track as well. You might recognise it.

32 ~ Nico & Vinz - Am I Wrong
(96-72-58-53-52-1-1-2-5-10-11-13-14-20-28-29-29-32-39-42-52-33-42-49-52-41-...)
1750pts ~ 26wks

Yet another song that first came to BuzzJack attention via BJSC, in this case back when the duo was known as Envy (presumably they had to change their name due to there already being various acts called Envy, including one iconically awful one I entered to the contest way back in 2009). Their new name was the remarkably American sounding Nico & Vinz, and when you hear their speaking voices in interviews they sound pretty American there too, but they are in fact Norwegian. 'Am I Wrong' is a decent vaguely African inspired pop song, although one that got old very quickly. Predicted by many to be one of the biggest hits of the year and it wasn't too far off that, with a pair of weeks at the top spot, but it's more like a mid-level hit of the year. Nico & Vinz have so far proven to be classic one hit wonders with the follow-up single only reaching #90 (and never making the top 100 on sales alone IIRC - they seem aided quite a lot by streams, with 'Am I Wrong' being one of the first songs alongside MKTO's 'Classic' to make the chart on streams alone in the very first week they were factored into the chart).

31 ~ Avicii - Wake Me Up
(...-15-16-22-26-33-32-31-40-44-41-45-50-51-61-64-61-61-60-63-69-55-53-56-62-62-62-67-63-64-65-72-70-75-88-83-77-85-96-x(6)-77-79-86-x)
1759pts ~ 41wks

Well at least Nico & Vinz had the kindness to drop off a bit when their song got very old. Avicii's 'Wake Me Up' on the other hand just festered around for months and months as radio stations continued to insist on playing it every 2 seconds. Blegh. The song was a 3 week #1 in this version and gained a fourth week at #1 in 2014 thanks to Gareth Malone's ensemble of 'celebrities' and Jo Brand with a monstrosity of a choral version for Children In Need. For some reason Gareth Malone's things still generate quite a lot of hype, with his choir's version shifting well over 100,000 sales first week, but their version set a new unwanted chart record as the first ever #1 single to only spend two weeks in the top 40 (a complete lack of streaming didn't help that but it only had two weeks there even on sales alone, incidentally that record would have been matched later by Union J had the chart remained sales-only), with a top 100 run of 1-7-54-x and total sales still some way short of even 200,000. The poor underappreciated original version by Spark Productions still has to make do with a #26 peak, while two more versions have also charted, a bagpipe version (yes seriously) by Red Hot Chilli Pipers got as high as #54 in early 2014 and a few weeks later a version by Aloe Blacc hit #69. Blacc was of course not in any way involved in the Avicii version.

32 ~ John Newman - Tribute
(...-5-4-7-12-14-18-15-10-14-23-24-34-41-42-24-25-37-47-56-65-88-60-97-x(2)-74-77-72-45-52-61-35-54-71-81-94-x(1)-98-x(4)-90-x)
1970pts ~ 36wks

Tracks in singles list:
102 Love Me Again
274 Losing Sleep
703 Out Of My Head

Well on his way to a knighthood for services to music, Newman himself continued to slay all bases in 2014 with his debut album, truly a 'Tribute' to his own greatness. Can't wait for his 2015 #1 single, he's quickly and mercilessly slaying Rihanna's annual #1 record cheer.gif

31 ~ Disclosure - Settle
(...-33-22-20-26-25-34-32-3-7-10-14-21-37-41-43-41-52-57-83-82-82-91-x(4)-27-47-38-27-23-31-34-56-59-66-90-x)
1979pts ~ 33wks

Tracks in singles list:
165 F For You
267 Latch (feat. Sam Smith)
371 You & Me (feat. Eliza Doolittle)
542 White Noise (feat. AlunaGeorge)

And another 2013 #1 debut album by a much hyped British act that continued to be successful throughout 2014, it's the brilliant 'Settle' by Disclosure. The album returned to the top three around the time of the BRITs, they didn't win any of their four nominations unfortunately but they did provide the absolute MOMENT of the ceremony with their joint performance with Lorde and AlunaGeorge, mashing up the former's 'Royals' with their own collaboration with the latter, 'White Noise'. The impact was real. The #72 hit single with the recording was real.

30 ~ Sam Smith - I'm Not The Only One
(93-x(9)-69-40-17-9-5-3-6-6-9-12-12-10-10-10-10-17-17-22-26-26-25-...)
1768pts ~ 22wks

Sam Smith unquestionably dominated 2014 with his debut album and the singles from it. I'm Not the Only One was the fourth single from it, and the third commercial hit, reaching #3 and spending about a thousand weeks at #10, all gained by streaming lol. It's my personal favourite Sam track by quite a way and even with the overplay, I'd take it over his other singles (which are still good). Although Sam, PLEASE release Leave Your Lover before the era ends!!! Has the potential to beat this one.

29 ~ Ed Sheeran - I See Fire
(...-30-24-25-34-48-57-68-89-x(6)-50-43-54-63-61-72-87-81-90-x(2)-83-48-49-55-62-68-64-60-63-65-64-65-71-67-68-67-57-62-50-50-53-58-66-65-69-66-80-...)
1773pts ~ 44wks

Ed Sheeran released I See Fire during 2013 as the soundtrack song for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and it debuted at #13 in the chart. It initially had quite a short run but ended up spending a long time in the top 100, most of the year in fact, no doubt aided by streaming and the fact that Ed gets streams like there's no tomorrow. The track is lovely IMO and the way it builds as it goes along is fantastic.

30 ~ Jake Bugg - Shangri La
(...-25-24-19-29-31-26-17-17-19-26-35-51-60-56-58-50-50-60-66-72-35-54-60-62-98-70-43-62-53-48-32-41-44-46-48-63-x)
1986pts ~ 36wks

Tracks in singles list:
580 Messed Up Kids
683 A Song About Love

So Jake Bugg's second album appears before either of the two forthcoming boyband albums, meaning boybands have won the points chart battle for this year happy.gif Jake's second album seemed to come out of nowhere for me, released just over a year after the debut. I thought it would've taken longer myself actually. It's a very good album though and I actually prefer it to the debut so it's a shame that its sales aren't anywhere near as good (even if it has beaten it in the points chart of 2014). Oh and it has his best track on it - A Song About Love heart.gif

29 ~ HAIM - Days Are Gone
(...-13-11-11-13-22-40-44-26-22-15-18-22-23-18-21-23-32-42-52-73-92-90-94-97-92-40-44-55-49-53-62-38-50-81-91-x(3)-74-x)
1993pts ~ 36wks

Tracks in singles list:
232 If I Could Change Your Mind
669 Forever

BBC Sound of 2013 winners HAIM continued to do extremely well with their debut album in 2014, just missing out on the top 10 at the start of the year. It did, of course, go to #1 when it was released, despite Justin Timberlake releasing the same week. The album was no doubt aided by minor hit If I Could Change Your Mind during the year, which became their fourth top 40 hit.

28 ~ Sigma - Nobody To Love
(1-2-3-4-5-7-11-18-19-24-26-31-31-32-33-39-42-45-49-54-54-61-61-65-71-74-86-97-x(2)-91-x)
1793pts ~ 29wks

The first of Sigma's pair of #1s in 2014, 'Nobody To Love' first surfaced on the Internet as a bootleg rework of Kanye West's 'Bound 2', which ended up going viral leading to it getting a release as a single and it became a massive hit. The single version was a bit cleaned up and the vocals were re-recorded, presumably as they were unable to clear the sample of Charlie Wilson's vocals from 'Bound 2'. Those vocals came from Daniel Pearce, a former member of One True Voice - as the song is higher than either of Cheryl's #1s here, perhaps they were the real winners of Popstars: The Rivals after all *.* This was a quite obvious huge hit from first listen, and deservedly so, it's a brilliantly energetic drum n bass anthem. If only the song it sampled did a bit better than #55 in the chart though.

27 ~ Avicii - Hey Brother
(...-3-3-3-6-8-10-13-14-21-24-25-28-30-38-34-35-43-46-50-60-56-58-67-69-69-76-90-78-79-82-91-86-93-x)
1845pts ~ 43wks

Finshing only a few places above 'Wake Me Up' is 'Hey Brother', the other big hit from Avicii's 'True' album. As with the other Avicii singles it featured no contributions from any other artists at all (yes I'm getting mileage out of that joke). Struggling to comment on this song, there's really nothing interesting about it.

28 ~ Rudimental - Home
(...-7-8-10-20-15-29-19-5-6-14-20-23-36-40-40-35-33-48-62-63-74-70-x(1)-91-83-24-36-51-60-81-94-85-35-39-94-x(2)-62-73-x)
2051pts ~ 36wks

Tracks in singles list:
252 Waiting All Night (feat. Ella Eyre)
384 Not Giving In (feat. John Newman and Alex Clare)
467 Feel The Love (feat. John Newman)
512 Powerless (feat. Becky Hill)

Rudimental seemed like a one hit wonder in the making when they smashed in at #1 with their single 'Feel The Love', slaying Eurofaves all over the shop. Little did anyone know they would go on to have not just another big #1 single but also a #1 album with their debut 'Home'. That #1 was of course in 2013 but their success continued well into 2014 including a return to the top 5 after their performance at the BRIT Awards with Bastille and Ella Eyre (they also won a BRIT award for Best British Single with 'Waiting All Night' and the live performance of that mashed up with Bastille's 'Pompeii' at the ceremony reached #21 as I mentioned in my commentary for the latter song).

27 ~ Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
(...-69-57-51-48-53-53-47-37-36-44-56-55-84-86-77-63-21-15-40-59-51-41-50-55-25-18-30-50-39-22-20-16-21-30-42-44-71-66-92-83-x)
2123pts ~ 40wks

Tracks in singles list:
127 Summertime Sadness (Lana Del Rey vs. Cedric Gervais)
348 Gods And Monsters

Lana Del Rey released a new album which came and went in 2014, and despite that album 'Ultraviolence' (it feels odd to use that term meaning an album instead of our poster now) reaching #1 it falls short of the top 50 here, albeit only just (at #56). Never fear as Ms. Del Rey still has representation with her 2012 album 'Born To Die' which showed quite incredible longevity for some two and a half years. The 'Born To Die' era surrendered one last top 40 single in 2014 (well, it was a song from the 'Paradise' EP but that was an extension of the era in UK terms), in the form of 'Gods And Monsters' which wasn't a single but was heavily featured in an ad for some soap opera. That and the release of the follow-up album kept this one ticking.

26 ~ Route 94 - My Love [feat. Jess Glynne]
(1-2-2-4-4-8-10-17-18-19-29-28-34-36-42-42-40-42-43-47-50-62-58-64-71-81-85-77-90-64-72-x)
1889pts ~ 31wks

Jess Glynne dominated 2014 right from the off, getting a HUGE #1 within a month or so of the year starting and then getting another #1 here with Route 94 just weeks after. Sadly, My Love is literally the same two lines on repeat and production wise it goes nowhere. How it was so big is beyond me sad.gif Jess' voice sounds nice on it though, shame nothing she's lent her vocals to has been as good as Rather Be, unsurprisingly the biggest hit of them all. Route 94 seem to be one-hit wonders to date but their remix of MK's old hit Always went to #12 during the summer. As it's just a remix, however, they remained uncredited.

25 ~ MAGIC! - Rude
(76-50-2-1-2-2-3-6-9-9-9-10-15-17-24-20-24-30-36-41-41-49-54-54-36-...)
1905pts ~ 25wks

MAGIC!'s debut hit Rude was involved in one of the biggest chart battles of the year, with Cheryl's Crazy Stupid Love. It was unclear who would triumph at first and it ended up being Cheryl, despite Rude being good competition. The better song won that week anyway. Unsurprisingly, however, Rude has gone on to be the biggest hit and climbed to #1 the week after. It's a great track IMO and I'm starting to enjoy it again after being bored of it for a while.

26 ~ Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2
(...-15-14-15-22-10-28-28-22-30-37-36-52-69-59-51-55-68-66-59-54-62-69-76-70-72-53-65-14-22-38-30-27-38-48-63-54-93-x(1)-71-86-88-86-x)
2126pts ~ 41wks

Tracks in singles list:
92 The Monster (feat. Rihanna)
316 Headlights (feat. Nate Ruess)
601 Rap God
610 Berzerk
764 Survival

Eminem made his comeback in late 2013 with singles Berzerk and The Monster, plus promo singles Survival and that other one that's about 5 hours long and doesn't have a single second of good music in it. The album did well again in 2014, no doubt aided by new single Headlights, despite that missing the top 40.

25 ~ Lorde - Pure Heroine
(...-18-19-21-16-8-8-12-9-9-21-8-38-52-35-18-29-35-43-41-52-40-40-58-53-54-66-87-69-76-55-56-49-52-69-93-95-x(2)-78-79-91-96-x)
2192pts ~ 40wks

Tracks in singles list:
84 Royals
179 Team
755 Tennis Court

Lorde's album again was released in 2013 and continued to sell well in 2014. It's a shame that Royals was the big hit from the album cause just about every song on there is better IMO ph34r.gif (Bray don't kill me please) Not much more to say here really.

That's a nasty 8-38 fall there! I'm guessing it had been discounted for the week it was #8 then put back to normal price the following week (probably a Google Play offer).

I think so yes (although the 9-21 fall just before it was just as bad really - that was the post-BRITs dropoff I believe).

I don't quite know why i like 'My Love' as much as i do, but it's always a delight whenever i hear it <3

I think so yes (although the 9-21 fall just before it was just as bad really - that was the post-BRITs dropoff I believe).

Very yo-yo chart run! Not to mention it shooting up to #18 soon after!

I wish Lorde had received further chart success with her singles. I can see why 'Royals' was such a hit but I never got fully into it whereas I connected very well with 'Team'. In fact, she seems like an artist who is much more popular than the charts would suggest, or at least Tumblr gives that impression! tongue.gif

For any fans of Ed Sheeran's "I See Fire", the Kygo remix is a must-listen. I never listen to the original anymore:

Amazing to see Lorde's album so high, what are its sales like? I've only been getting into it recently but I loved the singles, a shame only one was successful in the UK.

Wow that is indeed very lovely <3 i am a fan of the original, but i can definitely see myself replacing that with this now. wub.gif

Slightly missed our target of 4 posts per day yesterday oop (my fault for getting distracted by stuff, we will do 5 today to make up for it magic.gif)

Singles

24 ~ Coldplay - A Sky Full Of Stars
(15-14-13-18-22-14-9-12-13-21-21-22-22-28-31-37-46-45-50-52-54-56-58-60-61-67-71-84-84-66-64-62-...)
1940pts ~ 32wks

Like 'Break Free' earlier, this is another track that missed out on a few weeks of charting that it would have had if the OCC had changed their rules a little bit earlier. Unlike 'Break Free', it's a good song 'A Sky Full Of Stars' actually did manage to reach the top 10 eventually - its chart run seemed to start off very similarly to 'Magic' minus the first couple of weeks but with the release of the digital EP and a timely price reduction on iTunes it snuck in a week of #9, actually a place higher than 'Magic' ever got. Coldplay have thus maintained a streak of having at least two top 10 singles from every album to date. I was a little sceptical of this song as many were on finding out that it was produced by Avicii but thankfully the song sounds more like Coldplay with a bit of Avicii influence than Avicii feat. Chris Martin (which would of course just be credited to Avicii lololol), not a drop of the faux folk/country sound and overall not really even a dance song. It was the song obviously designated 'big hit' of the album but still a very good song and I was more than pleased to see it live up to that.

23 ~ Sia - Chandelier
(6-9-11-16-18-14-20-21-22-25-30-29-30-30-35-36-34-28-22-33-37-40-21-38-31-29-...)
1961pts ~ 26wks

Sia had a few big hits as a featured artist in the last few years but there was no sign until mid-2014 that she'd ever get another major hit as the lead artist. Then she came out with 'Chandelier', sounding a bit like a Rihanna song if slightly beyond her vocal range. With a lack of actual Rihanna releases in the year people jumped on 'Chandelier' and it was an easy top 10 hit which has remained top 40 for six months and counting. Calling it a Rihanna song is doing it a disservice - it was originally written for her and it's quite easily to tell that but it's actually a much better song than most of Rihanna's output, perhaps because of Sia's vocal style. She doesn't say the words in the verses very clearly but that somehow fits with the song. And then that CHORUS. I had started to get a bit bored of this recently but I've gone right back to it now and wonder how I had ever tired of it.

24 ~ Gregory Porter - Liquid Spirit
(RE-84-90-87-81-86-x(5)-67-53-30-35-28-46-55-79-36-39-57-56-21-12-12-31-30-29-30-35-29-33-42-36-36-38-32-49-61-25-48-72-36-87-x(4)-60-54-69-...)
2226pts ~ 42wks

Tracks in singles list:
none

This album originally spent a single week in the chart in 2013, at #40. Something (possibly Radio 2?) saved him majorly in 2014 and the album returned to the chart for the majority of the year, eventually reaching a peak of #12 for two weeks. One assumes his next album will debut in the top 10. I couldn't honestly even tell you what genre this album is - blues possibly? - as I've not heard anything from it.

23 ~ One Direction - Midnight Memories
(...-10-12-14-17-20-22-27-19-26-28-13-37-56-39-33-24-25-25-35-34-23-15-17-35-42-54-72-65-75-88-54-74-99-x(1)-100-x(6)-88-x(2)-75-50-57-71-83-91-90-80-...)
2329pts ~ 43wks

Tracks in singles list:
121 Story Of My Life
164 You & I
236 Midnight Memories
330 Best Song Ever

I'd pretend to feel bad about shading this but Joseph dared to write that excuse of a commentary for Lorde so. 1D are awful people and this album, based on the singles, is terrible and by far their worst. I wish bad things upon them. Come at me Jo.

Singles

22 ~ Chris Brown - Loyal [feat. Lil Wayne and Tyga]
(15-13-17-16-15-10-12-13-19-24-26-26-30-29-34-37-42-45-47-48-50-55-41-54-54-55-63-66-69-77-82-93-93-x(1)-98-x)
1966pts ~ 34wks

We have a case of "the good, the bad and the ugly" again in this section. At #22 is Loyal which is both the bad and the ugly. Chris Brown inflicted three versions of this song on us, one with Tyga, one with French Montana, and one with Too $hort. The Tyga version is the main version and I'm not sure I ever heard it lol as Radio 1 liked to play the Too $hort version. The song is an utter horror anyway and I'd happily never ever hear it again. And how HIDEOUS is that artwork???

21 ~ Paloma Faith - Only Love Can Hurt Like This
(50-20-7-6-8-8-10-14-16-20-28-31-32-32-34-33-31-36-40-45-48-42-49-56-60-63-70-72-75-72-89-x(1)-96-78-90-x)
1973pts ~ 34wks

Thankfully, good triumphs over evil, as Paloma Faith's absolutely SUBLIME Only Love Can Hurt Like This just misses the top 20 here. The track was the second single from Paloma's album A Perfect Contradiction and was tipped by many to be a hit but I don't think anyone predicted it to be as big as it was. It soared into the top 20 from just Radio 2 and music video airplay, matching her highest peak the following week, and then becoming her highest peaker the week after that. And this is from a artist who's never had a post-album top 40 hit before. Very impressive of course and so well deserved for what is my favourite Paloma song. Proof that you don't need Radio 1 to do well.

22 ~ Avicii - True
(...-9-7-6-5-4-2-5-12-12-4-15-19-22-22-19-21-27-31-39-37-37-51-71-79-73-82-92-83-44-33-31-40-41-51-74-98-x(2)-98-x)
2341pts ~ 37wks

Tracks in singles list:
27 Hey Brother
31 Wake Me Up
85 Addicted To You
299 You Make Me

I feel like we've mostly covered everything that needs to be said about Avicii in this countdown. His debut album did quite well again in 2014, actually matching its old peak from 2013 if I'm not mistaken. Funnily enough, not a SINGLE other artist featured on this album ohmy.gif (couldn't resist x) (well deserved though for Thermo appreciating the 1D shade xx)

21 ~ James Blunt - Moon Landing
(...-31-30-23-8-12-13-6-13-20-24-25-33-24-31-42-33-36-36-36-25-24-29-38-48-44-50-71-74-80-73-67-71-69-86-x(3)-65-x(7)-37-71-60-87-62-81-94-...)
2360pts ~ 42wks

Tracks in singles list:
126 Bonfire Heart
233 Heart To Heart
603 When I Find Love Again
696 Postcards

James Blunt, King of Twitter, just misses the top 20 with his most recent album Moon Landing. The album peaked at #2 behind Katy Perry's Prism despite relatively good sales and an actual hit single in the form of Bonfire Heart! I've surprised myself and listened to this album. Somehow actually enjoyed it laugh.gif Bonfire Heart is by far his best track IMO. The album got re-released during 2014 and re-entered the top 40 at #37 (presumably that was the week).

20 ~ Ellie Goulding - How Long Will I Love You
(...-5-6-7-11-15-19-21-25-28-18-37-38-34-36-37-41-46-47-48-50-47-49-54-58-58-67-83-77-78-77-81-67-71-75-77-84-84-81-x(1)-94-99-x(4)-98-x(3)-100-x)
2014pts ~ 42wks

Opening the top 20 and the first song to pass the 2,000 point mark (having the same number of points as the year - ILLUMINATI ohmy.gif), it's the Children In Need single. From 2013, that is. As discussed earlier the 2014 one was that atrocious cover of 'Wake Me Up' (can I sneak in that Avicii joke again? No, I won't) but as that only spent three weeks in the entire top 100 despite reaching #1 it naturally isn't top 200 here. Ellie Goulding's cover of 'How Long Will I Love You' by The Waterboys wasn't a Children In Need exclusive - it had been around for a bit on 'Halcyon Days' prior to the telethon - but that didn't stop it being easily the longest lived CIN single ever, remaining in the top 10 until late January and the top 100 until pretty much Children In Need the following year. This was actually back ahead of 'Wake Me Up' after just five weeks of the latter being on sale. This is not Ellie's most sonically interesting release, being very much a simple radio friendly ballad, but it's a very lovely track and not hard to see why it did so well.

19 ~ Calvin Harris - Summer
(1-2-4-7-10-11-15-17-16-16-15-17-23-23-24-28-33-35-42-44-51-55-58-61-66-72-64-52-63-73-85-99-x)
2050pts ~ 32wks

Calvin Harris only decided to go David Guetta on us (i.e. having a different featured vocalist on each track) with his third album, prior to that he was both the producer and the singer on his own songs. While the former approach has done well for him and he is inarguably a better producer than a vocalist it's nice to see that he hasn't ENTIRELY given up on singing his own songs, indeed he's released two more tracks with his own vocals off the last two albums, 'Feel So Close' from '18 Months' and then this song, 'Summer', from fourth album 'Motion'. There's just something about his own vocals that works remarkably well with his production, making this my favourite of the 'Motion' singles just as 'Feel So Close' was nearly my favourite of the '18 Months' singles (only behind 'Sweet Nothing'). Somewhat surprisingly 'Summer' is currently his biggest hit bar 'We Found Love' in the USA, reaching number seven on the Hot 100. It gave him a 6th #1 as a credited artist in the UK and continued to prove that he's one of our most consistently successful artists, also having a significantly better chart run than previous hit 'Under Control'.

20 ~ Gary Barlow - Since I Saw You Last
(...-2-3-5-6-13-15-9-23-27-29-31-32-10-15-12-17-29-38-2-7-15-24-33-51-53-62-x(2)-62-49-49-44-47-61-80-x)
2378pts ~ 33wks

Tracks in singles list:
82 Let Me Go
548 Since I Saw You Last
567 Face To Face (Gary Barlow and Elton John)

Poor Gary could never QUITE get this album to #1, it peaked at #2 in its first week in 2013, got back there for two weeks at the end of the year and the start of 2014 and then spent a fourth week there several months later thanks to a TV show. In contrast his previous EP/album thing 'Sing' (credited to Gary Barlow & The Commonwealth Band) somehow managed a full three weeks at the top. Nonetheless this album was overall much bigger than anyone could have predicted and Barlow would get back to #1 as part of the now three piece Take That in late 2014 so it's all good for him, apart from the many people who have taken a dislike to him with his taxes scandal. Oop.

19 ~ Dolly Parton - Blue Smoke - The Best Of
(6-6-7-4-3-3-2-2-2-3-7-10-11-13-14-16-20-34-35-43-44-30-24-26-19-21-16-15-15-...)
2478pts ~ 29wks

Tracks in singles list:
476 Jolene
595 9 To 5
689 Islands In The Stream (Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton)

I'm not known for being the biggest fan of country music on this site - I find the genre typically consistently abhorrent - but even I have a soft spot for Dolly Parton, I don't think it's possible to dislike her. Her performance at Glastonbury 2014 was probably more hyped than any of the headliners and it roughly coincided with the release of her latest studio album 'Blue Smoke'. The album was released here bolstered with a second disc of her ~classics~ hence the 'Best Of' part of the title (and the album having any 'charted singles') and sustained interest from Glastonbury saw it become her highest peaking album ever in the UK and possibly her highest selling.

18 ~ Ed Sheeran - Don't
(19-17-22-26-38-35-23-11-8-8-13-17-16-22-25-31-28-22-14-20-26-30-28-30-32-27-18-...)
2121pts ~ 27wks

So much lols as Ed is ahead of Ellie...with a song about her. The second single from Ed's monster smash of an album, x, is said to be about Ellie Goulding cheating on Ed, supposedly with Niall from One Direction. Eek. Don't seemed to struggle for a little while, at least in comparison to the then-album track Thinking Out Loud, but sailed into the top 10 on the release of the video. It hasn't been quite as big as Ed's other two x singles, both still to come, but nonetheless it's been a huge hit.

17 ~ Kiesza - Hideaway
(1-2-3-3-5-9-16-17-20-25-27-29-33-34-37-41-37-34-40-39-43-47-49-40-43-56-62-67-66-60-55-75-82-81-82-x)
2175pts ~ 35wks

The most overrated track of the year? I think so. Canadian singer Kiesza had about 50 other jobs before becoming a singer, each in a different career path. Why she actually decided to change is beyond me. It proved fruitful for her though as debut single Hideaway soared to #1 upon release and became a huge hit. Her voice actually didn't put people off ohmy.gif Despite sounding like something only dogs should be able to hear.

18 ~ George Ezra - Wanted On Voyage
(3-5-5-4-5-5-6-5-8-5-5-6-4-1-1-4-8-5-8-10-8-6-7-5-4-4-...)
2489pts ~ 26wks

Tracks in singles list:
TBA Budapest
43 Blame It On Me
218 Listen To The Man
735 Leaving It Up To You

George Ezra came 5th in the BBC Sound of 2014 list, and saw minor success with debut hit Budapest at the end of 2013 thanks to a support slot on Tom Odell's tour (who, funnily enough, had James Bay for support when he toured in 2014...why are Tom's support acts becoming bigger than him???). The album was sure to do well when Budapest got re-released and smashed, and it entered at #3, before eventually climbing to #1 thanks to good promo, incredible consistency from Budapest and the then-new single Blame It On Me. It's become the third highest seller of the year, no shock considering it's spent 26 weeks top 10! (27 now actually as it climbed to #1 in week 1 of 2015)

17 ~ OneRepublic - Native
(...-53-56-44-41-30-33-29-25-32-42-41-29-27-44-49-53-58-77-x(10)-73-46-77-70-9-13-16-17-31-34-34-40-54-61-31-13-24-36-53-55-56-47-49-38-...)
2502pts ~ 42wks

Tracks in singles list:
TBA Counting Stars
81 Love Runs Out
108 If I Lose Myself (Alesso vs. OneRepublic)
213 I Lived
605 Something I Need

OneRepublic had a huge hit in 2013 with Counting Stars, giving them their first EVER #1 and a track that hung around for bloody ages again in 2014 (hence why it is still to come). Unsurprisingly, this had a bit of an effect on the album and made it a consistent seller, although it wasn't until the re-release til it was propelled into the top 10, after new single Love Runs Out reached the top 3. I have this album but haven't listened cause in all honesty I'm sick to the back teeth of their songs ph34r.gif

16 ~ Iggy Azalea - Fancy [feat. Charli XCX]
(5-9-11-9-10-10-14-20-21-22-23-25-20-20-22-24-28-27-25-31-33-36-43-43-45-48-51-55-61-58-64-78-84-97-x(3)-100-...)
2263pts ~ 35wks

Black culture appropriation can only get you so far you know. And that amount of far-ness is #16. Iggy's highest entry here is unsurprisingly 'Fancy', which wasn't her highest peaking song but is nonetheless her biggest hit by far, having a very lengthy top 40 run. It was also a long-running #1 in the USA despite her previous singles failing to take off at all there (whereas in the UK this was her fourth top 20 hit). Charli XCX is someone who I really liked before she became famous but since then she's just taken to being extremely annoying and her chorus here is no exception - though I eventually learned to tolerate her and QUITE LIKE this song, though I still much prefer 'Work'. I'm told the video of this is good. I don't think it's anything special but then I haven't seen the film or whatever it's referencing.

15 ~ Katy Perry - Dark Horse [feat. Juicy J]
(RE-70-19-11-10-6-4-4-7-8-9-11-10-17-19-21-25-34-34-37-43-45-43-55-50-48-52-52-64-54-58-68-71-73-87-99-x(5)-95-59-97-x)
2269pts ~ 38wks

'Dark Horse' originally charted at #21 as a promotional single in 2013, meaning that it already had a higher peak than previous proper single 'Unconditionally' (#25) before it was even promoted. Once it did get proper promotion it unsurprisingly became a big long running top 5 hit, though her following singles from the 'PRISM' era returned her to more modest success. This is my second favourite Katy song after 'E.T.', she needs to do this sort of trap / faux hip-hop stuff more often <3

2560pts ~ 49wks

Tracks in singles list:
734 Lego House

Ed Sheeran dominated the year (or the second half of it anyway) with the follow-up to this album, but '+' itself had another extremely good year, being in the top 100 in all but three weeks of 2014. It even picked up another week in the top 10 (giving it a top 10 peak four years in a row) the week before its follow-up came out, largely thanks to being available for 99p from Google Play that week, but unlike other similar Google Play offers it continued to stick around well in the chart even after that, a bit like Adele's '19' on the release of '21' except not quite as high.

15 ~ Coldplay - Ghost Stories
(1-2-2-2-4-4-8-7-8-5-6-4-11-12-15-13-19-21-26-35-33-31-29-33-40-45-47-48-46-35-38-20-...)
2582pts ~ 32wks

Tracks in singles list:
24 A Sky Full Of Stars
45 Magic
438 Midnight
572 Another's Arms

Coldplay's sixth album continued their run of all their studio albums debuting at #1, proceeding to have pretty impressive top 10 longevity until it suddenly dropped 4-11 and hasn't seen the upper tier of the chart since. Nonetheless it has had a pretty good chart run overall and has produced two big hit singles, however it's looking very likely to be the band's first album to fail to sell a million copies. A follow-up is due in 2015 which is rumoured to be their last ever album (sad.gif) so we'll see if they continue their success streak further, I'm sure they will on the albums front at least but I always worry about their ability to keep producing hit singles.
