BuzzJack Music Forum _ Television _ 30 Years of CBBC

Posted by: Froot. 8th September 2015, 07:38 PM

Tomorrow sees 30 years of the Children's BBC, aka CBBC and they are celebrating with a special programme, 'Hacker's Birthday Bash: 30 Years of Children's BBC' at 6:00pm on the CBBC Channel. The special body of programming has been the home of many popular shows, such as Blue Peter, Newsround, Grange Hill, Byker Grove, The Story of Tracy Beaker, Horrible Histories and The Sarah Jane Adventures amongst many, many others. Throughout it's history, it has also helped the careers of Phillip Schofield, Ant & Dec, Fearne Cotton, Dick & Dom and Reggie Yates amongst a number of others too.

What are your memories of CBBC? Was it always on after you got back from school? Did you get up early on weekends to catch live TV such as Live & Kicking or Dick & Dom in the Bungalow?

Watching Tracy Beaker on CBBC was a must when I was younger, as well as The Sarah Jane Adventures. wub.gif

Don't really watch it much at all now, besides Wizards vs Aliens (when it was still airing) and Wolfblood - both are great shows!

I remember when CBBC was on BBC 1 #old

Posted by: JosephBieber 8th September 2015, 08:11 PM

I used to watch CBBC all the time when I was younger heart.gif So many fantastic shows, just to name a few of my faves:

- 50/50 (always wanted to go on this kink.gif)
- Arthur
- ChuckleVision
- Jeopardy (anyone remember this? It terrified me as a kid but I loved it laugh.gif)
- Mona the Vampire
- Raven
- The Basil Brush Show
- The Sarah Jane Adventures
- The Story of Tracy Beaker

Not forgetting all four S Club TV shows wub.gif

Posted by: Froot. 8th September 2015, 08:21 PM

I always really wanted to go on 50/50 too! Although knowing my luck, I would end up not even getting picked for a challenge laugh.gif

I LOVED 'Jeopardy', such a good drama and a great use of the found footage for children's TV. I still want to know what really happened at the end.

~~

I was very much a CBBC child, basically watching every show on there haha. Raven, Tracy Beaker, Arthur, Grange Hill and of course The Sarah Jane Adventures were particular favourites but I really did love basically everything. kink.gif

Saturday mornings were particularly great with Dick n Dom in da Bungalow as well as stuff like Smile & The Saturday Show. Kids these days are missing out on live Saturday morning TV.

Arthur, Sarah Jane and Horrible Histories were my favourites wub.gif

I legit miss Raven so much.

How can anyone forget that one? heart.gif (the books were better tho obvs)

So who were YOUR Blue Peter presenters?

My main 4 must have been Katy Hill, Konnie Huq, Simon Thomas and Matt Baker.

I do also have memories of Liz Barker, Stuart Miles and Richard Bacon though!

Posted by: Froot. 8th September 2015, 10:06 PM

Mine would be Konnie/Simon/Matt/Liz and throw in Zoë and Gethin at the end too.

My parents tried to learn me the English language by watching BBC programmes a lot. My favorite CBBC programmes were Live&Kicking, The Saturday Show, kerching!, TOTP Saturday, Tracy Beaker and Smile! . In summer there always was XChange I loved that show . I think my 1st CBBC show was Playbus at least that's what I remember.

Posted by: JosephBieber 8th September 2015, 10:18 PM

omg Kerching!!! I loved that show, totally forgot about it!

Posted by: Maurice Storan 8th September 2015, 10:19 PM

Ooh and of course all the S Club 7/8 shows which were brilliant. 2 shows which annoyed me were Chucklevision and Dick&Dom in the bungalow.

Posted by: LexC 8th September 2015, 11:23 PM

The Saturday Show, Get Your Own Back (my childhood really was the height of the 'gunge tank' motif of kids TV) 50/50, Basil Brush, Tracy Beaker, The Worst Witch, The Demon Headmaster, Mona The Vampire, Arthur, Watch My Chops, Stupid and Best of Friends (that one where a group of friends decided who would get treats and do tasks by sucking sweets that made their tongue blue) were childhood faves of mine.

Horrible Histories and Sorry I've Got No Head were ones I watched sporadically once I got too old for CBBC.

Posted by: JosephBieber 8th September 2015, 11:38 PM

Best of Friends!!! Can't believe I forgot that one, one of my favourites for sure wub.gif Get Your Own Back was lots of fun too, always enjoyed it!

With CBBC, it was all about Tracey Beaker! I used to live for that show when I was a kid. They used to make some great game shows too, as already mentioned, like 50/50 and Get Your Own Back.

'My' Blue Peter presenters too!

Posted by: Calum Hood 9th September 2015, 12:01 AM

Trapped was one of my favourites too.

All I remember about Raven is the sheer disappointment in their eyes when they stepped off the line on the obstacle course at the end and just vanished into thin air. (U)

This from the BBC Genome website.

A schedule from 9th May 2000 on CBBC:

3:25 Tweenies
3:45 Fix And Foxi
3:55 The Sliver Brumby
4:20 Home Farm Twins
4:35 G Force
5:00 Newsround
5:10 Trading Places

It is a shame that CBBC isn't on BBC1 or 2 anymore. That used to the highlight from coming home from school to watch CBBC.

Arthur, Best of Friends, 50/50, Story Of Tracy Beaker, Raven, Blue Peter.

Posted by: gooddelta 9th September 2015, 08:01 AM

I think I watched CITV more iirc but Grange Hill, Get Your Own Back, 50/50, Dennis & Gnasher and the S Club shows were all great, plus I agree with Joseph about Jeopardy (so good).

I wasn't into any of the Saturday morning shows though, much more of an SM:TV fan <3

Posted by: Mack 9th September 2015, 08:07 AM

I remember Cave Girl, I think that generated some controversy if I remember didn't it?

Posted by: Froot. 9th September 2015, 11:27 AM

Of course, 'Get Your Own Back'. heart.gif I think Dave Benson Phillips was hosting special shows at the Edinburgh Fringe this year.

omg I loved 'Stupid' too even if it did live up to it's name haha. 'Devil Finger!!!'

Does anyone remember 'Stitch Up!' too? It was a hidden camera prank show.

Didn't know Holly Wiloughby presented Xchange too.

The titles from 1985 to 1997:

Posted by: burbe 10th September 2015, 03:23 AM

I forgot about The Queen's Nose. That was amazing!

Posted by: Jonjo 10th September 2015, 03:43 AM

'The Queens Nose' & 'Even Stevens' (Shia!!!) were two more favourites of mine (along with stuff like 'Get Your Own Back', '50/50', 'The Demon Headmaster', 'Jeopardy', 'Ghost Hunter' etc..)

Same here, I was 8 when the first broom cupboard broadcast went out.

Anyone remember any of these from the really early days?

Beat the Teacher
Grange Hill with the original theme tune and "sausage" titles
Bad Boyes
Uncle Jack
Jossy's Giants
Dogtanian and the Three Muskahounds
The Mysterious Cities of Gold
Fonz and the Happy Days Gang
Alfonso Bonzo and Billy Webb

Being a big kid, I still tune in for Hacker Time and Horrible Histories - two of the funniest programmes on TV.

Favourites of mine:

50/50
The Demon Headmaster
Raven
Best of Friends
Grange Hill- In the early 00s
Get Your Own Back
Raven
Round The Twist
The Wild House

I LOVED 50/50, I fancied the pants off Sally Gray and wanted to go on that show when I was 8 years old. Trouble was being a BBC Scotland show it only seemed to use schools from that area. Other favourites of mine were probably these:

- Brum (but only the original version with Toyah Wilcox narrating)
- Postman Pat (again, original series)
- Spider (my niece and nephew love this one now from YouTube reruns)
- Hairy Jeremy (does anyone remember this one?)
- PC Pinkerton (likewise? I had a model figure of him which I still have)

And when I was a bit older:

- No Sweat (North & South 'Tarantino's New Star' was one of the first singles I remember having on tape. Aaah, memories)
- S Club series, obviously
- The Wild House (LOVED that show)
- Out of Tune

I remember watching the classics on BBC1 before CBBC ever existed, like Jackanory, Rentaghost, The Clangers. My favourite Saturday morning show was the multi-coloured swap shop with Noel Edmonds and those hideous jumpers, John Craven, Maggie Philburn and Keith Chegwin, now I'm going to grab my anorak ph34r.gif

Posted by: Brett-Butler 13th September 2015, 06:22 PM

Some of those shows that stick in my memory are -

- Incredible Games (a gameshow set inside a lift going up a tower. David Walliams played the computerized host. The Dark Knight still gives me nightmares) -

- The Demon Headmaster
- Aquila
- Christopher Crocodile
- Agent Z & The Penguins of Mars
- Dear Mr Barker
- The Queen's Nose

Posted by: Danvicii 13th September 2015, 06:56 PM

I was never a CBBC child really, the only thing I watched from it was Sarah Jane Adventures and that was because it was DW related.

Of course, being in Australia for a significant amount of my childhood where they don't have CBBC was a factor. But I wasn't into their equivalent so I don't know if I'd have watched it a lot

THE WILD HOUSE! Thank you for the name, I couldn't remember the name of it at all!

Posted by: Jonjo 14th September 2015, 12:17 AM

I forgot to mention 'The Really Wild Show' wub.gif

Also echoing the love for 'Wild House'!

I just loved the fact that somehow it led you to believe that cavemen did have the voice of Ray Winstone. I'm pretty sure I had the cuddly Hairy Jeremy from Woolworths as well. Ah, all flooding back now..
