Chart Commentary

Another week, another new #1, and this week, American boyband Why Don't We displace themselves in the top 10 as new single Hooked shoots straight in at #1. It's particularly impressive when you consider that Hooked was only released on Thursday, and I type my chart up on Friday evenings, so it had less than 48 hours to impact. Although I don't base my chart on play counts, Hooked was still by far and away the most played song of the past week for me. It becomes Why Don't We's second chart-topper, following Trust Fund Baby which spent two weeks at #1 earlier this year. Trust Fund Baby returned to the top 10 last week following a concert boost, and dips 8-14 this week, while These Girls falls 24-32.

Why Don't We
2017 10 These Girls | 1 | 40-x-10-11-19-21-35-x-24-32-... (8+ non-consecutive weeks)
2018 01 Trust Fund Baby | 2 | 8-15-14-6-1-1-3-3-5-7-14-14-17-20-25-26-8-14-... (18+ weeks)
2018 13 Boomerang | AT | 13-23-39-x (3 weeks)
2018 31 Something Different | 1* | 31-x (1 week)
2018 36 All My Love | AT | 36-x (1 week)
2018 01 Hooked | 3 | 1-... (1+ weeks)

New at #5 this week is Northern Irish emerging country singer Catherine McGrath, who makes her first chart appearance with Don't Let Me Forget. The song is the latest track released from her forthcoming debut album Talk of This Town, due out next month. The song features Hunter Hayes, and although his contribution to the song seems small (he provides backing vocals and harmonies), he adds a twelfth top 10 hit to his tally so far, which includes five #1s. Although Hunter's rate of achieving top 10s has slowed down in the past couple of years, he remains the most successful country artist in my chart (ahead of Carrie Underwood, who has nine top 10s including one #1).

Back for their fifth album, and second since their latest comeback, All Saints shoot into the top 10 this week with new single Love Lasts Forever. It's the lead single from Testament, due out next month, and follows #1 album Red Flag, which yielded three top 10 singles - One Strike (#3), This is a War (#5) and One Woman Man (#9). Love Lasts Forever starts at #8 this week.

All Saints
2016 03 One Strike | 1 | 6-9-9-12-11-12-13-3-4-6-8-14-19-28-34-39-x-37-x (17 non-consecutive weeks)
2016 09 One Woman Man | 3 | 9-16-26-26-x-20-23-34-x (7 non-consecutive weeks)
2016 23 Ratchet Behaviour | AT | 24-23-29-34-x-40-x (5 non-consecutive weeks)
2016 34 Who Hurt Who | AT | 34-x (1 week)
2016 05 This Is a War | 2 | 19-5-9-12-12-14-19-26-34-36-x (10 weeks)
2018 08 Love Lasts Forever | 1 | 8-... (1+ weeks)

The final new song in this week's top 10 comes from Ruel, an Australian singer/songwriter who makes his first chart appearance this week. Dazed & Confused is new at #4, and is the second single from his forthcoming debut EP Ready, which also yielded the single Don't Tell Me. Both songs have been top 100 hits in Australia, and Don't Tell Me was played on Radio 1 last September by Elton John, who gave the song glowing reviews. Also making their chart debuts this week are Ebenezer and Ana Mena, while The X Factor's Jack Walton makes his first chart appearance in almost four years with his first post-show single Amazing Grace (not a cover). Bad Bunny and J Balvin both reach new peaks, as Cardi B's I Like It jumps up one place (ensuring Cardi has three songs in the top 10 for a second week running).

In the album chart, Shawn Mendes is deposed after two weeks at #1, as Lil Xan rebounds two places for a second non-consecutive week at the top. TOTAL XANARCHY has received a boost now I've booked tickets to see him at Electric Brixton next month. My first rap concert. I'm slightly scared. Lily Allen's No Shame is already new at #3, expect it to climb to the top next week!

I am familiar with the All Saints song in your top 10 though of course, very nice comeback from them!

Yay for Duke Dumont entering here wub.gif plug.dj impact? If so then same with it entering mine laugh.gif as well as Diplo / Lil Xan, as I'm sure you'll be thrilled to know x
