Ellie Goulding really fits this thread for me. 'Burn' and 'Love Me Like You Do' sound nothing like anything on 'Lights' or 'Halycon Days'. They're a lot more radio friendly/public accessible than the likes of 'Starry Eyed'/'Guns & Horses'/'Anything Could Happen'/'Figure 8' etc...

Definitely agree with this but I probably dislike the change in direction, Bright Lights was perfection.

Currently Little Mix with Black Magic springs to mind, such a change from the sounds of "Salute"!

Extreme and Mr. Big both did this within a few months of each other in 1991-92, two metal groups releasing a gentle acoustic ballad (More Than Words/To Be With You) and getting their biggest hit by miles.

Plain White T's as well in 2007 with Hey There Delilah, I admittedly haven't heard the vast majority of their material but from what I have, it's certainly not all mushy acoustic songs.

It's not as if 'Black Magic' is a huge departure from 'Wings' or the DNA-era in general though.

I reckon so yeah. 'Wings' is their biggest seller on ~500k, and I could see 'Black Magic' surpassing that, especially with streaming included.

Bon Jovi - Always is another example of this, as is Def Leppard - When Love And Hate Collide (although the latter had already had a #2 with Let's Get Rocked).

Other examples from several decades ago:

East Of Eden
Fiddler's Dram
Styx
