BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize 20th June 2020, 11:27 PM

DaBaby is likely to make it 6 weeks at #1 with ROCKSTAR, and expect a big climb for Jawsh 685 & Jason Derulo. Potential entries include Beyoncé's BLACK PARADE and GRM Daily/M Huncho/Dutchavelli with Burning, plus new tracks from BTS, Doves and Victoria Monet

Bob Dylan may score his ninth #1 album with Rough and Rowdy Ways. Neil Young's Homegrown is among the new releases, including GRM Daily's GRM 10 collection, Phoebe Bridgers' sophomore record Punisher, Lamb of God's Lamb of God and John Legend's Bigger Love

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm. Please do not post spoilers on the forum in advance as this ruins the countdown for any listeners.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored.
- To keep everyone in the loop of all chart action, please refer to the iTunes and Spotify threads.

The entire top 4 is rather strong although I’d rather Rockstar be at 4 and the battle for number one be between everything else.

Rain On Me getting great longevity within the charts though potentially a fourth week at #2!

Savage Love will be number one by Friday- it sounds perfect in the sun and will only garner more streams as the weather gets warmer this week. The same can be said for Watermelon Sugar; a definite future top-five hit.

on that topic, Iyaz 'Replay' is now a TikTok song and in the Spotify top 200 ! The Black Eyed Peas are also the most successful they've ever been since 2010 (albeit not in the UK)

imagine if Pitbull and Flo Rida returned with a hit single too *_

A completely useless observation: based on First Look it seems there will be 4 different artists with numbers in their names in the top 10 this week (Jawsh 685, A7S, S1mba and 220 KID). I noticed the other day that there are quite a lot of them in the chart in general - 6ix9ine and Headie One also currently top 40 and 1979, PS1, OneRepublic, The 1975, Maroon 5, twenty one pilots, Shift K3Y and M24 all currently top 100.

Is this significant to anything? Probably not.

Am I bored? Yes. x

In 2010 was the first time I ever used Spotify. And back then they used to have not just a top 50 songs chart for the UK, but also a top 50 artists and a top 50 albums too.

The top 3 artists at the time were 1. Eminem 2. Lady Gaga and 3. Jason Derulo. So that really is quite a coincidence.

I actually went to listen to her song My Wicked Heart the other day (it popped into my head out of nowhere and I haven't heard it in probably about 8 years but I remember liking it), and it's nowhere to be seen on Spotify. A lot of other people despised that song (which I never understood), so maybe they deleted it from Spotify out of embarrassment?

Artists replacing letters in their names with numbers is so annoying. Buzzjack members who do it are even worse.

In other useless observations, I just noticed the top three singles all start with the letter R.

I listened to it the other day because it’s on Now 77. It’s dreadful, I have no idea who encouraged her to take up singing but they need a word with themselves.

Weren’t there some rights issues for that song around the sample/melody coming from RHCP’s Under The Bridge?

It wouldn’t surprise me if Ella managed to go top 40 this week tbh! She’s doing poorly on Spotify but doing incredibly well on iTunes and Apple Music!

I’d say for Ella that it is indeed doing incredibly well based upon the non existent airplay and it being a week after the release? I doubt anybody thought she would hold up to the extent that she’s done!

She’s not had a solo hit since “Yours” either so I would say she’s doing incredibly well biggrin.gif

MWH was good but probably was her weakest single, TBWML was underrated and peaked too low, and MTMBC the whole album campaign was underrated cry.gif cry.gif

My Wicked Heart was a highlight from Diana Vickers.

I loved Diana Vickers and Once was great and a couple songs from her debut
but Wicked Heart was beyond bad, it was like if she was was singing along to the melody of Under the bridge
but with zero enunciation so she seemed to be singing in Chinese or something biggrin.gif

The GRM Daily album must be considered a compilation album them or I imagine that would have been top 10.

I'd have thought the NSG album would have made some impact though ohmy.gif I guess the Potter Payper EP wasn't long enough to be an album?

A completely useless observation: based on First Look it seems there will be 4 different artists with numbers in their names in the top 10 this week (Jawsh 685, A7S, S1mba and 220 KID). I noticed the other day that there are quite a lot of them in the chart in general - 6ix9ine and Headie One also currently top 40 and 1979, PS1, OneRepublic, The 1975, Maroon 5, twenty one pilots, Shift K3Y and M24 all currently top 100.

Is this significant to anything? Probably not.

Am I bored? Yes. x

Same thing happened with The Plug's compilation a while ago (although that actually did appear in the first midweek update before disappearing).

Weirdly 'Burning' seems to just be credited to M Huncho & Dutchavelli by the OCC, even though they did credit GRM Daily as the 'lead artist' on the two previous singles from the compilation.

This isn't surprising at all, their last album didn't make the top 100 either and Latin pop just doesn't sell albums in the UK (Bad Bunny's album for example has been absolutely humongous in the US / worldwide in general but also didn't even go top 100 here).

Potter Payper is a British rapper who I guess must have a fairly strong fanbase who has just been released from prison and released a new EP on his first day out. Nothing to do with TikTok as far as I know. (I very vaguely recognise the name but don't know any of his songs)

Posted by: jimwatts 22nd June 2020, 07:34 PM

Breaking Me is surely safe for #3 this week. If anything, Savage Love looks more likely to fall behind Rover once any missing data is added, but I'd expect it to go Top 3 next week.

As of now, Harry's 4 singles from Fine Line have a combined 66 weeks in the Top 40, but just 6 in the Top 10. Whereas the only hit single from his debut managed just 10 weeks in the Top 40, but 7 of those were in the Top 10! Seems an imbalance, but hopefully Watermelon Sugar holds on.

Posted by: Bré 22nd June 2020, 08:59 PM

I would assume there probably is quite a big gap from #5 to #6, Capaldi only sold about half as much as Gaga in both of the last two weeks, no particular reason to think he'd suddenly jump back ahead of her this week. (Might be wrong though idk - having said that Gaga's sales are down a fair bit from this time last week, but they're still ahead of what Capaldi had sold in last week's Monday update).

Either that or her power for the charts is beginning to fail her.

How will Anastacia cope?

Posted by: SKOB 23rd June 2020, 04:55 PM

Those 600 units for Gaga could be either sales or streams but most likely not containing both.

Yes, I'm glad you agree that the fact that Chromatica, an album by a US female artist, is just 25 copies behind an album by a local artist who's the UK's biggest revelation since Sam Smith, makes it an undeniable success. Also, yesterday's streams remain to be added, so surely Chromatica is above Lewis' album. Suffer. angel.gif

Probably not. Will be blocked by Savage Love.

for pure pop songs like Watermelon Sugar is very difficult to get the necessary streams to grab the #1 spot
cannot see Watermelon Sugar doing 500K a day on Spotify like Rockstar is doing
it could be lucky and be at the right position the minute Rockstar hits ACR
but then there's also Savage Love that will sure be #1 for 10 weeks after Rockstar

Streaming.... just look at German chart for instance, it has changed so much since streaming is included that most of the chart is hip-hop related.... I think hip hop was always much popular than pop I think, it was more illegally downloaded because teenagers used to get it from illegal sources rather go to shop and buy a record. Now, they have all records they wanted to under one finger.

Kings & Queens = Pure pop

Posted by: Bré 25th June 2020, 12:51 PM

'Watermelon Sugar' is not a pure pop song unless by 'pure pop' you literally just mean 'not rap' lmao

(not that that's relevant to the point of it not being the most streaming friendly song, indie pop doing well on streaming is considerably rarer than 'pure pop' doing so, just find it weird to use that term to describe that song)

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 25th June 2020, 12:54 PM

It also shouldn't be underestimated how many of the rock kids jumped ship in the 2010s thanks to the likes of Kanye, Kendrick, Odd Future etc when it became clear that hip hop was innovating & captivating far more than the stagnant rock scene.

I wonder what is causing 'Chicago Freestyle' to be rising so significantly in the past few weeks - may just be getting better playlist placements or something I guess?

Posted by: jimwatts 25th June 2020, 05:57 PM

Yep another week of Perfect in the Top 40 as more songs drop out / go to ACR than there is new music to replace them.

Incidentally it's now up to 5th in the all time sales list, seems it overtook Thinking Out Loud as well as Despacito and Uptown Funk in the last few months, so it's behind only Shape Of You for songs from the 2010s.

I was thinking the same thing. It's not even the strongest of his singles, but somehow it's managed to capture the public's imagination. But regardless, it's great to see a post album single having this level of success!

Posted by: Klumzee 25th June 2020, 07:31 PM

I'd say it's getting the traction because it's the one of/if not the strongest single of this era! It did well when it was a promo single to hang around so it definitely had potential back then. I also think the release of the music video has kick started the process as well as the good weather and it's made to be a song for the sun!

Underdog? Biggest member of the biggest boyband of the last few years. Successful singles and album artist.....hardly an underdog.

He's an underdog in the context of this song! Successful post-album singles are few and far between in the streaming era, and Watermelon Sugar had already been a hit before it became a single, so I don't think anyone ever anticipated this, regardless of how good the song is + how successful Harry is! Artists like Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift have struggled with post-album singles in recent times, while others like Post Malone and Ariana Grande simply haven't bothered. The fact Harry's scoring a second successful post-album single is a huge deal when most artists can't even get one nowadays.

And that's without considering how the self-titled post-album singles did - Two Ghosts and Kiwi's chart peaks came from the album release week, they didn't re-enter as singles!

Realistically, I was genuinely hoping for a top 40 re-entry for Watermelon Sugar. When it managed that the week the video came out, I revised my hopes to achieving a new peak, and it managed that just a couple of weeks later. Going top 10 is beyond what I ever hoped for but I'm absolutely thrilled. I hope it continues to defy expectations!

Is witnessing your tantrum a funny experience? Yes, it is, but it doesn't change the fact that me & everyone here doesn't care about your cheap show. angel.gif

Totally agree with you and also hoping it continues to climb- I would adore (pardon the pun) for it to become a long-running too-five hit.

Makes perfect sense, sorry I misjudged. He is doing great and long may it continue!! Watermelon Sugar is definately capturing the GP and will get even bigger in my opinion.

No need to get nasty on here. It makes this Friday Chart Predictions not great to read with some comments I've seen in here this week.
