Just as long as Spice Girls' 'Holler' isn't relegated when we've got to the 2000s! That should be an interesting year for determining non-#1s, given the extremely high turn over.

Oh, and I suspect some of my fave ever number 1s will now miss out with this due to low sales and plummeting chart runs (Hear'say - The Way To Your Love and Roger Sanchez - Another Chance from 2001 in particular).

Sorry to disappoint SB but you did have the last thread to your exact requirements Yes there is no perfect system and you may or may not be correct in your guess we'll have to wait and see but as a rule of thumb it does allow the charts more stability (especially in high turnover years). Just out of interest what were you expecting? I guess luck, both good and bad, plays its part in any chart system anyway, but it does seem weird some perfectly respectable, if unspectacular, selling chart toppers might end up getting lumped in with the likes of LL Cool J purely because of their timing. But it's just a thread, etc, and it will be interesting regardless. As for what I was expecting from your next thread... well, I didn't have anything specific in mind as such, but in the boy band/girl group thread we were discussing the week Jesse Hold On by B*Witched was released when someone asked what the sales of the top 4 were on that week, and you made some comment about how that's all to do with your next thread. I'm just a bit confused now how that was relevant here unless you were just being cryptic for the sake of it? |

I wonder if LL Cool J going to #1 could be partially explained by his profile from his TV show In The House? I don't even know where it was shown here but I know that The Fresh Prince of Bel Air used to be on BBC2 and it was "connected" to that show in many ways as the Wikipedia article explains, so maybe it was shown on there as well at some time? Surely it must have raised his profile a little bit around that time at least, and that combined with a movie promotion and a low sales climate aligned to make one of the more random #1s (in terms of the song in relation to the artist's career).

No I wasn't being cryptic, I was intending to present this in a different way giving the weekly top 5 with sales but that proved too time consuming so it's easier to do it this way! |

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS- BLOCK ROCKIN BEATS- NON NUMBER ONE
NEW PEAK POSITION: 4 Another track from the heady high turnover days of early 1997, this one bombed 1-8-20-34 in April of that year. A second track to be lifted from the then forthcoming album "Dig Your Own Hole" it followed its predecessor to the top of the charts thanks to a very slim victory over the Spice Girls but on this methodology can't even break into the top 3! A most definite non No 1? |

MICHAEL JACKSON- BLOOD ON TEH DANCEFLOOR- NON NUMBER ONE
NEW PEAK POSITION: 4 Originally penned for the 1991 album "Dangerous" it failed to make the final cut and was left on the sideline until the part remix project "Blood On The Dancefloor-In The Mix" when it was dusted down and updated. It finally managed to do what Blur, Supergrass and Robbie Williams had almost done and deposed R Kelly from the top but on this chart it fails to do much really, thanks in the main to another precipitous hurtle downwards 1-8-21-36. |

10TH MAY- LOVEFOOL- Cardigans (2 weeks)- NEW NUMBER ONE
Taking a deserved turn at the top in May 1997 is this little pop gem from the Cardigans. Though it was only a small hit when released in 1996 making No 21 it was given a second wind thanks to its inclusion in the film "Romeo + Juliet" and proved to be such a consistant seller spending a month in the top 4, enough to see it outpace the tracks that debuted above it and quickly sunk. |

GARY BARLOW- LOVE WON'T WAIT- NON NUMBER ONE
NEW PEAK POSITION: 3 Naturally the Cardigans success puts paid to Barlow's No 1. A second solo single from him was famously written in part by Madonna for her "Bedtime Stories" album in 1994 but was given away to Barlow and provided him with a second solo No 1 for the most-likely-to-be-a-megastar- ex-take thater. Of course it didn't quite turn out that way in the end so perhaps this is quite fitting. |

Oh, how ironic was Top Of The Pops in 1997? The week they opened the show with 'Love Won't Wait' when it nosedived 01-06 really summed up what was wrong with TOTP at the time.

Blood on the Dance Floor: AMAZINGNESS
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT This is a 1/2 bottle red wine speaking a bit. Seriously though, I don't get why he dropped BOTDF out of the set in the middle of the HIStory tour in 97. WHAT WOULD THE WORLD BE LIKE WITHOUT GEZZA7T6 This post has been edited by SKOB: 18th May 2012, 06:06 PM |

I don't get what you're implying here? They never opened the show with the #1 single as far as I remember. Anyway, still not surprised with any inclusions here so far. Would have been lovely to see The Cardigans get a #1, and certainly it's one of the songs I most associate with 1997 (as someone who didn't follow the charts or even music that closely at the time). Appearances from 1997 should get quieter as some genuine big hits arrive at the top, and the one weekers dramatically decrease, but there's still at least one song that will definitely make this list such was the timing of its release in September. |

What I meant was the following week when Gary Barlow had dropped 01-06 and for some bizzare reason, that week's TOTP started with a performance of 'Love Won't Wait' despite the fact it had fallen 5 places. |

I don't like this rundown. Beetlebum and Block Rockin' Beats are two of my favourite #1s ever. Poor Blur and Chemicals.

ETERNAL FT BEBE WINANS- I WANNA BE THE ONLY ONE- NON NUMBER ONE
NEW PEAK POSITION: 2 A song not here due a rapid retreat down the charts or due to poor sales but rather because its initial sales were not enough to topple Olive nor enough to stave off the mighty Hanson whose "Mmmbop" which becomes (under this system) the first track of 1997 to enter at No 1 with its impressive tally of a quarter a million in week one. Even on this chart is spends 4 weeks in the runner up position to Hanson, remarkable consistancy given the high turnover in the year! |

I shall reinterpret the above post as Eternal had 4 weeks at #1 and Hanson stalled at #2 with 'Mmmbop'. Sales + quality = No Much better!!! |

THE VERVE- THE DRUGS DON'T WORK- NON NUMBER ONE
NEW PEAK POSITION: 2 Showing sadly too many similarities with Eternal, the Verve's sole UK chart topper gets demoted on this survey, Diana's death in paris and the ensuing Elton Record making sure this was never in with a chance of the top slot. It moved 6-4-2-5 on this chart and it should be noted that in the aftermath of Di's death the sing was supported by radio, unintentionally capturing the zeitgeist of that time. |
