BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Space vs Space

Posted by: HiyaLuv 13th October 2020, 11:22 PM

Neither are exactly blowing my head off but enjoying the lighters in the air cosy dark night rock of Biffy's as well as the instantly anthemic pop of Becky's. The latter definitely has more interesting lyrics, about disappointing parents.

Posted by: GhoulOdyssey 13th October 2020, 11:24 PM

Biffy by far!

Posted by: HiyaLuv 13th October 2020, 11:27 PM

I may be struggling with the actual concept of creating a poll. It looked like I'd done it properly until I posted it. If someone could help, that would be great, because this is the debate tearing every household apart this autumn.

Posted by: Grim Bréaper 13th October 2020, 11:30 PM

Biffy's is my favourite song from them since at least 2013, I think it pretty much perfects the formula of Biffy Clyro ballads. It may help that some of the lyrics hit hard on a personal level having to deal with being in a long distance relationship during COVID times. But yes, beautiful song. Becky's song is fairly good too but no competition here x

(and this marks the end of people vouching for Biffy in this thread now probably because this is BuzzJack we're on)

Posted by: jimwatts 14th October 2020, 06:43 AM

Before I read the sub-heading of this thread, I thought it might be about the two groups called Space laugh.gif

i.e. the anonymous 1970s French band who had a hit with Magic Fly versus the less anonymous 1990s Liverpool band who gave us Female Of The Species et al. Spookily, both bands were mentioned on this very forum within the last week! magic.gif

Anyway, Becky's song is fine but Biffy wins easily for me.

Posted by: Bjork 14th October 2020, 06:57 AM

Biffy Clyro too

Becky's song is nice but like all her songs, it's just ok for me

Posted by: dan-G 14th October 2020, 07:22 AM

poll added.

I'll go for Becky Hill (of course). I've heard the Biffy Clyro one and it's decent by their recent standards though.

Becky

Thanks so much!

I really like both songs, Biffy's is easily one of their best, but Becky's is probably my favourite thing I've ever heard from her, so it's a no-brainer for me. Becky FTW!

Posted by: gavindeejay 14th October 2020, 08:49 AM

Really like both, but Biffy just edges it for me.

Posted by: HiyaLuv 14th October 2020, 09:43 AM

I voted for Biffy, but there was only a Rizla between them.

Posted by: Count Olaf 14th October 2020, 09:45 AM

Like them both but Biffy’s has really struck me over the past couple of weeks. Definitely a highlight of the album and got me back into listening to it after my initial listen as I wasn’t too struck by the first two singles.

Posted by: HiyaLuv 14th October 2020, 09:53 AM

I've never really got into Biffy by the way but I do think Black Chandalier and Instant History are great. Probably Many of Horror too (or as Matt Curdle would call it, When We Collide).

Posted by: Steve201 14th October 2020, 11:58 AM

Biffy for me too!

‘Space’ will probably get an XF cover now too lol.

I really like this and the only other ballad I know from them is Many Of Horror.. any others you can recommend?

Howl, Bubbles, Black Chandelier, All Singing & All Dancing and Re-Arrange are some of my other favourites!

Posted by: M4NGO 14th October 2020, 03:07 PM

^ It's not a ballad but my favourite Biffy song is 'Animal Style', love that!

Posted by: Dobbo 14th October 2020, 03:30 PM

I like The Captain and Bubbles but That Golden Rule is the ONE

Posted by: HiyaLuv 14th October 2020, 08:29 PM

I like both but voted Biffy, i was expeting this poll to be a battle of bands including Space who released female of the species back in the 90's

Posted by: Grim Bréaper 14th October 2020, 09:27 PM

Consider me very pleasantly surprised by these results!

'Many Of Horror' was really the only other song I had in mind specifically when making that post actually, I kind of just meant that it took the general idea of that song but did it better laugh.gif I guess the closest thing to another 'ballad' that's among my highlights of their discography would be maybe 'Folding Stars'.

Quite liked 2020 promotional single End Of too. But really have always seen them as bit of an Aldi Foo Fighters. Best Becky Hill song? I'm going to go Afterglow. That's just magical! Another autumn one if I remember rightly. Seven years ago already!

They should devote entire prime-time ITV schedules to this.

Becky.

Posted by: Bjork 15th October 2020, 05:23 AM

Biffy's best 2 songs are Mountains and Bubbles, they were really at their peak with the Only Revolutions era
It's a pity things went downhill for the next two albums (Opposites and Elipsis) but the new one is a return to form

and sure they're not the Aldi Foo Fighters, if something Foo Figfhters are the Aldi Nirvana biggrin.gif

Not by Biffy itself, but by spin-off group Marmaduke Duke with Simon Neil: “Kid Gloves” - minor hit (#110 in March 2009), lovely song.

Yeah so was I, I would have a hard time deciding between them as Female Of The Species and Magic Fly are both great.

There's finally a new Marmaduke Duke album coming! (And Simon's also started a third band recently)

I don't know if I'm going slightly insane - has BH's Space been sped-up to make it dancier? I heard it on R1 and it sounded faster and now I'm getting the same thing on my streaming service? I'm only 37, I can't be losing the plot that much. Help!

Posted by: danvember 2nd November 2020, 10:46 PM

You're not wrong mellow.gif looks like they've done a new radio edit

checked my spotify and it's also sped up, how annoying.

Thank God it's not just me. Lols at the modern world! People can immediately make massive changes to their current single just like that. I feel a bit gaslighted, as if someone's going to say "it's always been that fast, what are you on about?". Pretty, pretty sure I've heard the mid-tempo version on the radio a few times too. I'll never get used to this version, sounds like one of those cheapo Capital remixes.

Posted by: M4NGO 3rd November 2020, 12:00 AM

WTF?!?! That's my one issue with streaming sites mad.gif you really shouldn't be able to just change your single like that, I'm actually shocked they've done that. They could have at least kept the original and just added a new radio edit or something. I much prefer the original speed, and now I can't listen to it. Should have downloaded it sad.gif

Posted by: Bré 3rd November 2020, 12:05 AM

Well that's... a decision ~

Posted by: danvember 3rd November 2020, 10:01 AM

they also did this with Disciples 'On My Mind' where they changed the intro from the vocal hook "all I do every night..." to an instrumental bit, although it got must've got enough backlash for them to change it back cos that didn't last for long (although when it came back, it brought along with it a little beat that wasn't there to begin with, so it's still not how it originally was).

Posted by: rio309 3rd November 2020, 10:06 AM

Can we rerun this poll now that Biffy have released the version with an orchestra? It's stunning.

my version of Becky’s Space is the original for now, let’s just hope they forget about Apple Music

really frustrating though to essentially delete the song you actually want to listen to
