no because we were in the first year of the millennium in 2000. It's like I'm 17 years old but I'm in my 18th year of life.

you need to look at it like this,

1st Jan 2000 - 31st Dec 2000 = 1st Year

1st Jan 0000 - 31st Dec 0000 = 1st Year of that millennium.

The thing is, we use the Gregorian calendar, and that doesn't have a Year Zero: it went from 1BC straight to AD1. (Although how they when to do that is unknown.)

Posted by: drynet 28th February 2009, 03:17 AM

on the debate of where does the year 2000 fit in, think of it this way - if i was to say 'the eighties' people would think 1980-1989 right? not 1981-1990, because 1990 would indicate the start of the 90's (having a 9 there instead of an 8)

Therefore i would say the decade is 2000-2009

Posted by: Robbie 28th February 2009, 11:33 AM

just to confuse things further / add to the argument, 2000 was the end of the 20th Century (when you think about it it is obvious, a century is 100 so 20 centuries is 2000), 2001 being the start of the 21st century which will end in the year 2100. We did celebrate the millennium a year early but it was all overrated and expensive anyway, so who cares?!

A decade is simply a period of 10 years so the 80s are 1980 to 1989, the 90s are 1990 to 1999 and the noughties are 2000 to 2009. There is nothing that says a decade is a period of time that ends in an 0 (ie this decade doesn't run 2001 to 2010).

So this decade began in 2000 which was still in the 20th century laugh.gif

So total should be 522,395 for the decade.

Gareth has as well, which is more of an achievement really, as back then they were all physicals, I expect Leona will end up being the biggest single seller in the UK now though, out of all the solo talent show contestants. Gareth doesn't release chart music anymore, Will is mainly an album seller now and doesn't bother the singles chart much anymore, I can't see Alex Burke or Shane Ward outselling Leona in the future either. I guess it all depends on who x-factor throws up next, it didn't do that well last year.

It might just do it but it'll now need a big boost around the time of single/album#2 release as it is out of the top 200 and selling less than 1,000 per week.

If it can get back into the top 40 for a few weeks around single/album #2, it might just do it. Really want it to get a million this year, as I reckon she could have another million seller next decade and make it 2 decades in a row.

At the end of 2009, The OCC will give Radio 1, the Top 40 of 2009, AND the Top 40 of
the Decade - both will be broadcast. Indeed, the Top 100 of the Decade will be compiled,
but, it likely that Radio 1 will only make/find the time to play the Top 40. (The Top 100 of
2009 will be compiled too, & 'Music Week' will carry that. They may even carry the Top
100 of the Decade - Singles & Albums).

Steve has Take That sold many more of RTW since the figure there now (its been on that for a couple of weeks and I'm pretty sure they may have moved up a notch since then).

Thanks

Still top 200 last few weeks, so i'd wager a few 1000 anyway. The best way to keep this list anything like up to date would be to add accurate estimates to the existing figures based on the top200 each week (like others do for the YTD singles/albums thread) because the way this is, only the favourites/odd MW figure for new stuff ever gets updated which is kind of a positive bias. Interesting read though, i realise that would require good knowledge of sales predictions and a lot of time wacko.gif

Has anyone got an up-to-date figure for Rule The World - its been on 617,634 for four weeks and as it has re-entered the top 100 (maybe twice) since then - it must surely have sold at least another couple of hundred if not more.

Much obliged.

Posted by: spicefunk 13th May 2009, 10:10 PM

Hey, there was a show on 4Music today, using figures from the OCC. It was the 100 biggest selling US tracks of the decade (ie. UK sales by US bands). Its seemed pretty up to date but probably about a month out, e.g. Beyonce was 500k with if i were a boy, and GaGa was listed as 540k with Just Dance. Annoyingly i only caught the last 31 but they are probably the most use for this list anyway. Its more the older ones it'll be useful for where we don't get sales updates; some have went up a fair bit, i'll only list those which don't already have a higher (ie. more up to date) figure.

30 Usher ft Ludacris Yeah 395,000
29 Akon Lonely 400,000
28 Madonna Music 405,000
27 Timbaland Ft Keri Hilson and D.O.E. The Way I Are 415,000
26 Bloodhound Gang The Bad Touch 425,000
25 Flo Rida ft T Pain Low 430,000

21 Madonna ft Justin Timberlake 4 Minutes 445,000
20 Britney Spears Oops! I Did It Again 450,000
19 Eminem The Real Slim Shady 470,000 (his others are the same though Stan excluded prob coz Dido is British)
18 Timbaland Presents One Republic Apologise 475,000

16 Christina, Pink, Mya and Lil Kim Lady Marmalade 490,000

10 Madonna Hung Up 530,000

8 Katy Perry I Kissed a Girl 535,000 (still charting top100/200 def sold more)

5 Wheatus Teenage Dirtbag 555,000

Incidently Kings of Leon were number 1 with Sex on Fire - on 610,000 on the show but they're higher now. Isn't is also the biggest selling download ever? Sure musicweek mentioned this before though Alexandra Burke can't be far off.

Anyhoo, hope that's a fair few to update Steve and if anyone saw the whole show feel free to post the whole list i'm mad that i missed it really interesting! rolleyes.gif

Steve can you let us know what Take That are with RTW now. Two weeks ago their (almost) exact figure to that date was 632,500 - but with the tour - I know its sold a lot more as it was up into the 50's on iTunes during last week. I'm assuming it may be near 640,000 or thereabouts. I know Shine, Patience and Greatest Day were all inside the iTunes top 100 even now - as RTW still is.

Posted by: Andy70 22nd June 2009, 03:01 PM

Just done a bit of checking, it sold 286k in 2000, and in 2001 did not make the T200 year end chart, so sold less than 56k.
It charted on 11 Nov 2000 and charted T75 for 23 weeks, so some of its chart run would be in 2001 as well. I think from #16 onwards would be sales in 2001? Maybe say it sold 15k? Unless someone knows better, so 286k + 15k = 301k? Maybe round up to 305k?

She is indeed. None of the others (of those that have won to date) ever will , even GA's The Promise won't overtake SOTU.

Gareth, Will and Leona have all performed admirably with subsequent singles.

And Hi, not seen you around for a while, hope you are keepign well.

Posted by: Eighth Day 26th June 2009, 11:26 AM

If my maths is correct and this list covers all songs from 2000 onwards then we have had 10 years worth at the end of this year and in those 10 years 200 songs have sold 300K plus. Thats an average of 20 per year making the top 200. This year however we are only just half way through and already we have 43 entries in there. This surely reflects the upturn in single sales as a result of itunes (and related sites). Or just how poor sales were just a few years ago !! Or it could be that the music is just so much better now.... but somehow I don't believe that unsure.gif

yippee 100 posts !! Only a few thousand more to catch up with some of you guys.

Is the slightly annoying and over-played newish DFS advert not affecting McFly's All About You sales at all? I swear before Michael Jackson died I kept hearing the song getting played on Real radio too.

Are you sure the figures for Take That songs are correct? I would have thought that over the last few weeks (given the number of times it has re-entered the top 100) - that RTW would have sold more than any of their other songs. If this is right - then since three weeks ago (the last note I had) then RTW has been outsold by Patience, Shine and even Greatest Day?

Unlikely but if it gets back in the top 40/75 for a few weeks when Album #2 is released and can hang in the top 200 for a bit then it might just make it. More likely it will cross it in 2010 though, pity I was hoping for Leona getting a million seller this decade and next sad.gif

25. Lady GaGa - Just Dance - 706,842 (including 1942 sold in 2008)
26. Kings of Leon – Sex on fire 703,320

GaGa and KoL are getting very close together on the charts each week. GaGa will no doubt get another sales boost from the 'best of 2009' sales boosts at the end of the year, but I could see KoL overtaking (or getting very very close to) GaGa in coming weeks.

Its going to be tight.

It's at #118 in the midweeks so will only sell around 1.8k this week.

It will probably sell around that value (or less) until Happy/Echo is released so will need to reverse what it has lost c/w the 3.5k in the remaining weeks post Happy's/Echo's release.

Probably needs to get back into the top 40 for a week or so, and then hang around the top 75/top 100 until the end of the year to make it.

I reckon it'll probably fall just short, which really sucks, and pass the 1 million in the first 4 weeks of next year. sad.gif

I really want her to have 2 million sellers in 2 separate decades too sad.gif

The big question: will Leona's Run and Black Eyed Peas' Boom Boom Pow both top 600k by year's end, making them the only two artists to have three platinum singles in the 2000s?

QUOTE(-Jay- @ Oct 21 2009, 08:04 PM) *
It's become such a strange list in the last year or so, with the really big hits of 2003/4 being overshadowed by not exactly the biggest hits of 2008/9.

The 1990s best sellers list is similar - most of the tracks are from the late 1990s, the earlier years didn't sell much at all. 1990-1993 in particular barely appear at all in the top 100!!

The summer of 1994 is the turning point, after Wet Wet Wet there's suddenly loads (All 4 One, Whigfield, Pato Banton, East 17 etc) and from 1995 things just explode.

Nice job Steve, here are my figures, there was a sales show on 4 music a few weekends ago that really helped with some of the figures, I adjusted a lot of mine, some were spot on, some were out by over 20k!

Wow no MCR and they were no.1 for a few weeks. I'm sure they would've sold enough to be top 350 ohmy.gif

Posted by: Andy70 3rd November 2009, 08:24 AM

What year were they #1, and I'll check the sales database, have a feeling they had lowish sales...

Is it Tony Christie that has moved down for Alex and Band Aid 20 to move up a place? Why so?

Alex Burke has climbed above both of them, plus Band Aid still sells a few at Christmas, with the Tony Christie song, you have to take out the 1970s sales for the original, it has sold 1,197,000 in total, and 1,137,000 in the 2000s, as far as I know wink.gif

I'm not sure how much shut up and drive sold, I assumed I'd put the same song twice and have since deleted the lower one, I will look into it, cheers.

Wow no MCR and they were no.1 for a few weeks. I'm sure they would've sold enough to be top 350 ohmy.gif

MCR must be close! Had 2 weeks at #1 and didn't ever sell more than 40k in a week I don't think.
Anyway by the end of 2007 they were on 225k.

Posted by: Andy70 8th November 2009, 08:19 PM

Shut up and drive did less than 200k, so would be unlikely to be on the list, as for MCR, they could be on 250k, I just dont know, there will be a few songs lower down that I dont know about, but I'm hoping the higher end of the chart will be fairly close to the end of decade one biggrin.gif

Does someone have the up-to-date figure for Take That's RTW. It sold around 5,000 last week alone and has been inside the iTunes top 150 for months now ... so it must now be more than the figure on the front page.

Thanks

Wow at the sales of Sex On Fire, if only they had made their comeback at the beginning of 2008, they could well have had the best selling single of the year.

Posted by: Sharpshooter 22nd December 2009, 01:44 PM

Does anyone know the current sales of Sex On Fire? If it is likely to surpass 860k? Number 14 is going to be really close with Gaga and Leona lewis.

Posted by: Norma_Snockers 22nd December 2009, 01:50 PM

RTW sales are now past 700K

I'd estimate it is still selling a good few k per week, so I'd guess they're nearing 900k now. Probably a trickle-sale mill seller.

Also, some people were asking about total sales of Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire and Take That - Rule the World, I try and keep on top if those sales each week, and have a list of the biggest selling singles ever smile.gif

108 SEX ON FIRE – Kings of Leon (2008) 968,425

RULE THE WORLD - Take That (2007) 736175

Anything else on the overall biggest sellers list, just let me know, obviously Lady GaGa and Black Eyed Peas continue to go upwards...

For the Leona fans, I have this...

BLEEDING LOVE – Leona Lewis (2007) 984,000

I'm sure About You Now was above The Promise and both were in the Top 100 in the previous list given sometime in January.

On Take That - I find it strange that the pretty mediocre Greatest Day is only 19,000 sales behind the brilliant Shine.

I wouldn't have expected Will's E/G sales to have increased much, if at all, but they seem to have gone down since your last official update in October last year wacko.gif

1. Will Young - Evergreen/Anything Is Possible 1,795,000

Good to see increases on his others though.

I think there were a few incorrect Top 100s put out there, this Top 200 comes from Chartsplus.

And the reason for Will Young's figure going down is an official figure from mw or some tv prog, so I downgraded my own figures. pirate.gif
