BuzzJack Music Forum _ Madonna _ God Control ● video out now

Posted by: Medellíam 18th April 2019, 12:51 PM

Might seem premature starting a thread for this now but rumours are that a second song/single will be dropping in May for her Eurovision performance.

We know that Madonna's recorded a music video with drag queens and rumours are that the song is a more upbeat, disco-influenced number. Very political, both the song and video, and likely what the controversy regarding Madonna negotiating her Eurovision deal was about.

Speculation that this song could be 'Killers That Are Partying'.

QUOTE
Madonna has recruited some former stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race to appear in her upcoming music video.

The Queen of Pop is currently gearing up for her return to the music scene, with the lead single from her upcoming 14th studio album, which is believed to be called Magic, tipped for release in the coming weeks.

Earlier this week, Madonna revealed on Instagram that she was shooting the song’s music video, and it sounds as though she may have some surprise Drag Race cameos.

Among them will be the most recent winner of All Stars 4, Monét X Change, who is reported to have accepted a last-minute offer from Madonna, forcing her to miss a show in Denver.

As a result, Monét has been pulled from the Haters Roast US tour, with a statement from organisers saying: “Sometime during the afternoon, we’re told [Monét]received a phone call from Madonna with an offer to be in an upcoming music video. Monét asked [organisers Murray & Peter] if it would be ok to leave the tour to accept the offer. We said no because it was too short notice to replace her on Haters.

“Just hours before the show was to start and without telling anyone including the other queens on the Denver show, Monet left the venue and flew to LA to accept Madonna’s offer. Therefore, we have decided that Monet will no longer be on any upcoming Haters Roast dates.”

What’s more, season 4 runner-up Phi Phi O’Hara revealed on her Twitter account that she had also been offered the chance to appear in Madonna’s video, but turned it down.

Photographer Luke Austin posted on his Instagram account that he’d been on the set of Madonna’s video for 16 hours, teasing: “The song is great. The video is political. The video will be controversial.”

Yeah Medellín doesn't sound like what has been hyped for Eurovision so I'm intrigued by what this is going to be!

Posted by: vibe 18th April 2019, 09:15 PM

She would be crazy imo to not perform Medellin

Posted by: Medellíam 20th April 2019, 10:48 AM

I Rise will be made available on 3rd May. I guess it's likely this is the song with the drag queen music video and that will be performed at Eurovision.

Posted by: vibe 20th April 2019, 11:48 AM

True .

Strange singles choice - it’s a deluxe only bonus track.

Posted by: dandy* 21st April 2019, 10:06 AM

It’s not deluxe only, it’s the final track on both editions. The bonus tracks are within the tracklisting, a bit like Lady Gaga did with Born This Way

I agree they need to capitalise on the success of 'Faz Gostoso' and make that a single - #1 on Brazilian iTunes and Apple Music! ohmy.gif Not sure if 'God Control' would work as a proper single because it would be completely butchered for radio but I'm thrilled it's getting a video!

I don't think anything would get 'success' outside of Brazil so why not give light to this very important song (and the best on the album tongue.gif).

She’s not going to get a hit outside of Brazil — let her release what she wants and focus on selling the album. God Control is a moment and an important song for her. Can’t wait!

Posted by: Medellíam 17th June 2019, 11:49 PM

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund apparently (Ray of Light, Music, American Life, Jump, Celebration, Ghosttown, Bitch I'm Madonna).

Yesssss!!!

A video what looks incredible too.

How I wish she done this at Eurovision.

It won’t be a hit but videos will put her in the media and will help the album keep selling.

This goes in so hard. Uncensored. It could have a massive backlash. One of her most controversial videos to date...

... but so needed.

I hope it gets the positive attention it deserves and not just blind, misguided hate.

Posted by: Medellíam 26th June 2019, 08:32 PM

Wow. So much to take in. It's really tough watching those shooting scenes but it's one of those things where people need to face the reality of these situations head on and realise it isn't just something you hear about on the news that you can brush off and think it won't happen to me. I think that's one thing Madonna addressed when the video travels back to the start of the night where Madonna's getting ready for the night out and a reported shooting is broadcast on the TV news. This video isn't about profiting on tragedy; there's a genuine concern and the videos takes care in representing those who have been targeted by the various shootings in America and recognises that what these people represent is why they've been targeted.

As for the superficial aspects, the dancing scenes are such joy. I wanna go to the club with Madonna. The video as a whole is fantastically put together and, like 'Medellin', looks so big budget.

QUOTE
Madonna told CNN her response to those who may have a problem with the graphic depiction is that "this is what happens when people shoot."

"Understand that this is what happens. Guns kill," she said. "A bullet rips through your body, knocks you to the floor and takes your life, and you bleed to death. I mean this is reality."

"It's really scary to me that any public gathering, any place of worship, any school is a target," Madonna said "Nobody's safe."

The pop icon added, "We know that gun violence disproportionately affects children and the disenfranchised in our society. This certainly inspires me to use my art and platform to advocate for change."

Shannon Watts is grateful Madonna is doing just that.

Watts founded Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America the day after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in which 20 children and six staff members were killed.

She told CNN that artists like Madonna are able to amplify their calls to end the violence.

"We know that one way to change our culture of gun violence is to change culture," she said. "People who change culture are often influencers and creative people. They have this ability to reach and connect millions and to encourage them to get involved and to use their voices and their votes to end gun violence."

This is so much to take in as you say. I'm pretty speechless and just... in awe of the statement she has made, so explicitly and bravely.

Posted by: Jαsє 26th June 2019, 09:23 PM

Posted by: HausofTove 26th June 2019, 09:30 PM

I'm yet to see a negative comment on Twitter or social media. Articles are really highlighting the shocking yet impactful and truthful nature of the video.

Posted by: Medellíam 26th June 2019, 09:32 PM

This refers to the whole era really but, when Madonna delivers videos and music like this, it makes you wonder what the f*** she actually got out of stuff like MDNA?

I'm guessing her creative energy went on making films back then.

Same! I know all the comments are from fans so far but it is refreshing to have a sea of positive comments when you scroll through the feed. It's also good that they're all understanding the message. I'm fully expecting some criticism to come when the usual suspects get wind of the video but hopefully that will be heavily outweighed.

I've woke up thinking about the video. It's the first video in an AGE to leave me feeling this affected. I feel angry, emotional, joyous, heartbroken, moved... and most of all proud. This is the woman that has revolutionised pop music over and over again and has once again outdone herself.

Posted by: Medellíam 27th June 2019, 04:13 PM

Fab article from Bradley Stern on Muumuse:

QUOTE
Madonna‘s tackled countless points of social contention throughout her over thirty year-long career as the Queen of Pop™ – religion, racial injustice, gender inequality, sexuality, war, power, greed, corruption. You name it, Madonna’s probably sung and danced around on stage about it at some point.

“God Control,” which I consider to be the true centerpiece of her worldly, political Madame X, tackles the super breezy subject of gun control. Nothing divisive about that issue at all here in America! Nope, not at all…

And in the accompanying Jonas Akerlund-directed music video released on Wednesday (June 26), she – as with anything – doesn’t shy away from illustrating the issue in vibrant and gory detail, complete with a much-needed trigger warning. Literally.

Admittedly, I – and many people in and around the entertainment industry, I’m sure – had a general idea of what was coming with this music video in advance because, well: squeeze a bunch of Drag Race girls, YouTubers and creatives into a room, and the tea is bound to spill. The descriptions I was given varied in intensity – from “it’s like a classic, old-school Madonna video” (?) to “it’s basically the Pulse shooting – you’re not ready.”

I was mostly terrified of how this already extremely sensitive subject could be approached with respect and decency, but after watching, I think Madonna’s managed to do it in an artistic, effective and, most of all, jarring way.

Without making specific references to any one event (because, frankly, who can even keep track at this horrifying rate?), Madame X tackles the most prevalent atrocities happening around the country in one clip: armed robbery, school shootings, club massacres. The underlying cause is always the same: gun violence.

As I pointed out in the Madame X review, there some hypocrisy at play, admittedly: she’s the same artist who performed the wildly bloody “Gang Bang” on the MDNA Tour just a few years ago, after all. But I’m not interested in holding her to a performance concept or a position on an idea forever. Everyone, pop artist or otherwise, should be allowed to evolve on issues.

To get her point across, Madge scatters scenes of the horrific events of the late night dance floor massacre – which are brief, but startling – in between shots of real-life gun control protests, as well as of Madame X frustratingly puffing away on a cigarette at a typewriter, writing out the lyrics of her twisted disco epic: “Everybody knows the damn truth.” “We lost gun control.” “When they talk reform, it makes me laugh.”

There are some particularly striking visual moments throughout, including the children’s choir singing through their tears, and the long line of caskets stretched down the church aisle. But perhaps one of the most effective scenes – for me, anyway – was seeing her getting dressed to go out for the night while watching the breaking news coverage of a school shooting on TV – with a “straight white men rule everything around me” poster hanging in the room, no less.

That is an absurdly accurate depiction of the experience of American Life – in these past few years, especially. Watching it back, it’s all the more absurd that it even is a part of life. I’ve lived that experience, too. I’m sure most people have. But it shouldn’t be normal.

As with most things Madonna, the video is a lot to process. The messaging is a lot to process. And yes, it absolutely does trigger the trauma that the queer community at large experienced three years ago this month. But the video (mercifully) steers away from glamorization or exploitation: instead, it’s an important, disturbing reminder that change needs to happen, still.

The Studio 54 euphoria of the song, mixed with the horrifying imagery of bloodied bodies hitting the floor, is exactly the kind of stomach-churning discomfort needed to convey the situation at hand: we feel helpless about the State of Things, we go out and dance to forget, and even the spaces we consider safest can be violated, violently so.

It’s deeply upsetting to watch – but then, it’s also not more than a mirror being held up to society. Madonna, as always, is one of the few pop stars willing to make such a bold message in her ongoing quest to fight for what she believes is right.

It’s time to wake up.

Posted by: Rhoda Camel 27th June 2019, 05:11 PM

the video is really quite something. the contrast between the music and the shooting scenes is unnerving!

Posted by: blacksquare 27th June 2019, 05:39 PM

Idolator: Madonna, Miley Cyrus & More Artists Snubbed By The 2019 VMAs

QUOTE
Chief amongst those is Madonna. The Queen Of Pop is responsible for some of the VMAs most iconic moments. Not only that, but she released six videos this year in support of Madame X. Of those “God Control,” a powerful and shocking demand for gun reform, is the clear highlight. It will go down as one of the most unforgettable releases of the year, but it wasn’t nominated for a single award. Surely, it should have at least been up for Video For Good if not Video Of The Year. To be fair, the Jonas Åkerlund-directed opus may have come a little late to be recognized. It dropped at the very end of last month. But if so that doesn’t excuse the equally offensive snub of “Medellín.”

#12 on Slant Magazine's Top 50 Songs of 2019:

QUOTE
12. Madonna, “God Control”
Madonna has a reputation for being a trendsetter, but her true talent lies in bending those trends to her will, twisting them around until they’re barely recognizable. Madame X’s pièce de résistance, at least in that regard, is the six-minute “God Control,” which begins with the queen of pop conjuring the spirit and disaffected monotone of Kurt Cobain—“I think I understand why people get a gun/I think I understand why we all give up,” she sings through clenched teeth—before the whole thing implodes into a euphoric, densely layered samba-disco-gospel mash-up. Madonna’s vocals alternate between Auto-Tuned belting, urgent whispers, and Tom Tom Club-style rapping as she takes on the gaslight industrial complex and so-called political reformers. On paper, it might sound like the ingredients for a musical Hindenburg, but—somewhere around the midpoint, when she declares, “It’s a con, it’s a hustle, it’s a weird kind of energy!”—it all coheres into the most exhilaratingly batshit thing she’s done in years. Cinquemani

Finally some recognition! Easily one of my top songs of the year. heart.gif
