This looks as if it is going to be one of the big front-runners for the Oscars this year and it is getting loads of hype, most critics calling it one of the best films of the year! |

I LOVED this, my only issue with it was the 3rd section, which all in all I didn't think was as good as the first two parts. My main reason for this was because I didn't buy into the transformation into the 3rd version of the same person. I know he was meant to go through a transition, but suddenly he looked like 50 Cent and I found it difficult to identify with them as the same person.

I loved the LGBT representation that this portrayed, and also featuring an entirely black cast, made a refreshing change for cinema.
Mahershala Ali was GOOD but I'm a bit confused about him getting nominations/wins, because I don't know what makes him stand out over any of the actors playing Chiron or Kevin. There were four stand out scenes for me, one in the first third where Juan, Chiron and Teresa are sat round the table, I thought that was a beautiful handling of the gay theme. Two in the second third, the first where Chiron and Kevin are on the beach and the second when Kevin is forced to beat Chiron up. The final stand out scene was the ending. Based on that, I'd single Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome out as the star performers. I liked the subtle-y of it, a lot like "Manchester By The Sea" in that regard I think, rather simple in story but not boring. |

Jack I totally agree about nomination thing. When I finished watching it I was like 'one of the actors has been nominated for quite a few awards, I wonder which of the Chrions it was...' and was quite confused when I looked it up and saw it was Ali. I feel very similar about Octavia getting a nom over Taraji in Hidden Figures.

I agree with Joe that the final Chiron/'Black' was just a little unbelievable considering the character in the first two acts of the film, I thought the actor did a great job of showing that it was a facade and he was still very nervous beneath that. It also lead to an incredibly touching ending with the 'first person to ever touch me' line. Naomie Harris was my acting favourite in this, I said it in the supporting actress thread but I didn't know she could act like that, especially with such a short time frame to film it. Mahershala Ali was solid too and his presence was definitely missed but I'd agree with Jahq's two picks in terms of actors, it's a shame that none of the Chiron's were recognised at any of the major awards

I actually thought his transformation was believable, it was a message of how much your environment and the people around you can change you and how you have to adapt to this. He clearly went the same way as Juan, one of the few people who he actually looked up to. Ofc. it was clearly not who he was deep down and the film did a great job of showing that.
While the third act didn't QUITE have the same power as the first and second, this film was stunning. Seemingly simple in it's story, but done in a unique way, and certainly giving some screen time to some underrepresented issues - most certainly the homosexual discrimination against people or colour. Films like this show it's time for child actors to be recognised more in acting categories, both of the young Chirons were incredible. I'd support this winning Best Picture over La La Land if just because as happy and wonderful as that was, this feels so much more representative of the times and needs to be acknowledged. |

I also fully support this winning over La La Land. What a beautiful film, and I'm so glad a story like this managed to reach the mainstream.
Mahershala Ali was subtle but his character had the most impact on the story, and that table scene? Fantastic. Naomie Harris had the best performance for me, her scene in and outside of the car is incredible. It's just a film with great performances from all the cast. Moonlight - there's a good film in there somewhere, the cast is top notch, but the treatment is plodding and padded. Scenes such as the one where someone walks across a car park is just unnecessary and time-wasting.
That said, I identified with a lot of the bullying scenes as a teen, and the sudden ending spoke to the romantic in me, but overall the pace was dull. 4/10 |

This was a strong film though not quite as amazing as the critics would have you believe (IMO). A decent slow burner, touching on numerous struggles & will certainly stand out among the list of films I'll end up seeing in 2017. Would have benefitted from a bit more fluidity between the Acts.
