Leona was the last original Christmas song to chart very highly, but it wasn't as successful as The Darkness/Band Aid 20 in terms of chart run/sales.

Last proper 100% everyone-knows classic: Mariah in 1994, and even that only really kicked off in the download era.
Last major festive hit the majority will know: The Darkness, 2003, but in airplay terms it's still not up there with the usual suspects. Coldplay and Leona, time will tell. Both get a bit of airplay but don't seem established enough yet. |

Leona Lewis. It spent two weeks at #3 last year and a while at #1 on iTunes. In the USA, maybe Kelly Clarkson's "Underneath The Tree".

Leona's. Sadly sales were lower last December than when The Darkness released that song. It was #1 on Airplay, #1 on iTunes and spent 2 weeks in the UK top 3 over Christmas.
I wouldn't say Coldplay's 'Christmas Lights' was much more than a minor hit to be honest, as much as I like it. |

I think Christmas Lights will go on to be a festive classic due to the status of the band that made it. Its also great and the chart position would have been higher had it not been released on a wednesday!
