16th Step to Me (55 points)

Highest: 8th (letloverule)
Lowest: 16th [Least Favourite] (»ïïïïïïïïïïïïï., …ready for it, missing you and Theo)

Photographer: Francesca Sorrenti
Location of photo: Brighton, England
Date of photoshoot: August 1996

It seems not many of us are too keen on this one, given that only three out of 15 voters included it within their Top 10! It's very in your face (much like the Spice Girls themselves), with a swirly blue background & leopard print group name logo!

Step to Me (a left over track from the Spice album recording sessions) was released as a promotional single for their Pepsi sponsorship deal, in July 1997. You had to collect 20 ring pulls from the cans & then send them away in exchange for a CD. The format of the single was originally printed in an album size jewel case, but the demand was so high that it was soon reprinted in a card case.

15th Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) (61 points)

Highest: 5th (missingyou)
Lowest: 16th [Least Favourite] (Jay, vibe, LazySpice88, letloverule)

This is by far their most simplistic cover, and their only one not to feature the girls themselves (or depictions of them). The logo used is from their Spice era (first album), with the letters designed to look like pink jewels. However the font used for the "Girls" part of their name, and the title itself, are unique to this era. I don't think there's much else to say about this, it's very nondescript and I've always felt it looks like a promo CD. missingyou is a fan of it though, putting it within his Top 5 favourite covers! Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) was released in November 2007, in a CD single size jewel case.

14th Let Love Lead The Way (69 points)

Highest: 4th (Eduardo)
Lowest: 16th [Least Favourite] (Maz!, HarryEzra)

Photographer: Terry Richardson
Date of photoshoot: 19th July 2000

The picture used for this release is from the photo session for their third album, 'Forever'. I don't think many would have guessed that this photo is courtesy of Terry Richardson, because it's not typical of his style! "His signature style is very simple and almost jarring, often shot as high key with the model posed against a white wall, using a bare flash for harsh, direct lighting.". This is their only UK artwork to feature a photo of the girls taken outside of a studio, in the outdoors.

Although the cover art and the spine of this release only states "Spice Girls - Let Love Lead The Way", it is in actual fact a Double A Side release with Holler. It was released in October 2000, in a digipak format that contained 4 post cards (one of each girl).

Posted by: Mr.X 29th January 2018, 12:15 PM

Thanks Jay wub.gif

I never understood the Let Love Lead The Way cover. It is such a bad picture, shit quality, almost blurry ah. Like, it seems like they were trying to do something different, but just came out bad... Holler is one of their best cover pictures though (and tbh should have been the album cover, not just the single!!)..

Posted by: Michael Andrew 29th January 2018, 05:21 PM

I have to agree about the Terry Richardson shoot.

I'm not a fan of Richardson's 'style' at all. It's lazy. It looks as though he doesn't understand the camera or lighting. And he doesn't seem to care about his models. The girls are all beautiful, but he made them look like crap.

I mean, who could take a bad picture of Victoria?

On the other hand, poor Francesca Sorrenti did a bang-up job. Shame the design has so much going on.

13th Viva Forever [CD2] (74 points)

Highest: 5th (Maz!)
Lowest: 16th [Least Favourite] (Mr.X)

Photographer: Dean Freeman
Location of photoshoot: Spiceworld Tour, 1998
Designed by: Joe@Virgin Art

Viva Forever was released two months after Geri's departure from the group. Despite this, images of Geri were still included on the single cover, seeing as it's a 5 piece recording. This version of the single includes two live tracks (Who Do You Think You Are & Say You'll Be There), which were recorded in Birmingham on 3rd May 1998, therefore pictures of the girls performing live were used for the front cover. A live album release had been planned, but the idea was scrapped after Geri left. Maybe this is what the album cover would have looked like? This single was released in a CD single size jewel case format, and included a foldout double-sided poster. The inlay of the sleeve shows a Union Jack flag with the words "Girl Power Live" running through the red cross - I wonder if this is what the live album would have been called? This is the final Spice Girls artwork to have Geri on the front cover. When she rejoined the group for their 2007 reunion, both the Greatest Hits and Headlines didn't include a picture of the group on their respective covers.

12th 2 Become 1 [US Version] (78 points)

Highest: 7th (HarryEzra, …ready for it)
Lowest: 16th [Least Favourite] (Spiceboy, Jade)

Photographer: Ray Burmiston
Date of photoshoot: 21st September 1996

The US release of 2 Become 1 came in the summer of 1997. Initially, 2-Track "mint" CDs & cassettes were released on 29th July 1997, while the Maxi "green" CD followed two weeks later. The US covers of Wannabe & Say You'll Be There recycled previously used photos, so 2 Become 1 marked the first (and only time) that the US received exclusive artwork. I have to say, I really like the picture of them! I assume the girls posing with candles was in direct reference to the opening lyric "candlelight and soul forever" (Edit: Although judging by the date of the photoshoot, maybe that's just a nice coincidence!). However, the artwork as a whole... I think Michael Andrew summed it up nicely in the rank thread: the background colours used are incongruous! Particularly the green cover. I feel like this somewhat spoils what could have been one of their best covers. The placement of their logo in the mint version is a little random too. Both of the CDs were released in album size jewel cases (in fact, all of their US singles were).

Posted by: Jade 29th January 2018, 10:41 PM

Yeah that cover was so off-putting due to the terrible use of colour! That green background does the photo no justice at all.

(enjoying this commentary so far!)

11th Goodbye [CD2] (93 points)

Highest: 2nd (LazySpice88)
Lowest: 16th [Least Favourite] (Michael Andrew)

Drawn by: Siobhan Cassidy

The Spice Girls had their very own official magazine published throughout 1997 & 1998, and the 7th issue (which I assume was published in September 1998?) ran a competition for a fan to design artwork for their forthcoming single 'Goodbye' (closing date for entries: 9th October 1998). The winner was Siobhan Cassidy, a 15 year old fan from Croydon, England. As well as experiencing the honour of having her design printed on thousands of copies, she also got to visit the CD pressing plant and receive a copy of it signed by the Spice Girls. Her drawing of the girls is based on the Viva Forever video fairies. Speaking to The Sun newspaper, Siobhan said: "I got the idea by thinking about the girls waving goodbye in the back of the Spice bus. I added snowflakes to give it a Christmassy feel and the storks and the babies to represent Mel B's and Victoria's pregnancies. My friends are jealous but proud. I'm a massive Spice Girls fan.". It's a cute design overall, I can see why it won! I think I'd like it a bit more if the text wasn't slightly slanted. kink.gif The CD single size jewel case format includes 4 postcards (which don't easily fit inside the case, annoying x). A different competition winner was chosen for the https://www.instagram.com/p/BR5mTg4BoQy/?taken-by=owen_minogue

Having read the commentary on 'Goodbye' (CD2), I feel a little cruel for placing it last.

Sure, it doesn't have the 'designed' look I loved about the Spice Girls brand. But of course, young Siobhan did her best and is right to be proud.

Also, I'm just bitter because the magazine rarely turned up at my newsagent and I didn't get to enter the competition :-p

10th Holler (94 points)

Highest: 4th (Mr.X)
Lowest: 16th [Least Favourite] (Eduardo)

Photographer: Terry Richardson
Date of photoshoot: 19th July 2000

The picture that was chosen for the Holler artwork is also taken from their Forever album photoshoot. I think it was well chosen in relation to the title of 'Holler', with the girls looking like they could be hollering! I think it's one of the few pictures taken this album era that has an essence of their "spiciness" to it. I also like that the title is in very large font, very eye catching. Overall, it's a bold looking cover! This single was released in October 2000, in a CD single size jewel case.

Date of photoshoot: May or June 1996

Spice Girls with a Sepia tone filter! I think I'd have preferred the picture if it was without this stylistic choice. This is taken from their 'Spice' album photoshoot, which took place during a promotional trip to Japan (the group launched in Japan in advance of other countries, even the UK!). This picture was used for the CD1, CD2 & cassette formats. CD1 was released in a CD single size jewel case, while CD2 was issued as a digipak including a large foldout poster. It was later used as the artwork for Wannabe's US release!

Posted by: Jay ☆ 2nd February 2018, 10:09 PM

A reminder of the artwork still to be revealed:

2 Become 1 (UK)
Goodbye (CD1)
Mama/Who Do You Think You Are
Spice Up Your Life
Stop
Too Much
Viva Forever (CD1)
Wannabe

Posted by: Jade 2nd February 2018, 11:07 PM

Yeah the sepia tone ruins it a little! It can stay though because a poster of it is the one signed Spice Girls item that I have bought on eBay over the years laugh.gif

8th Goodbye [CD1] (150 points)

Highest: 2nd (Spiceboy, Eduardo)
Lowest: 13th (LazySpice88)

Photographer: Lorenzo Agius
Location of photoshoot: London, England
Date of photoshoot: October 1998
Designed by: Joe@Virgin Art

In 8th place is the Spice Girls' highest placed artwork as a quartet! This is certainly one of the Spice Girls' most minimalist covers, used for CD1 & the cassette! The font size for both their group name & the song title is quite small, and the white background takes up the rest of the top half of the cover. The girls themselves also have a minimalist look going on, with subtle make-up and the possible suggestion that they might not be wearing clothes (https://scontent-sea1-1.cdninstagram.com/t51.2885-15/s480x480/e35/12120336_1806015206291866_1470630332_n.jpg?ig_cache_key=MTEwMjI4NzczODMwOTU0ODE2MA%3D%3D.2!). For some reason the word "pure" always comes to mind when I look at this artwork. It is also the only Spice Girls artwork which shows Mel B with a different hairstyle than her classic Scary Spice curls, opting for the straightened look here. One thing that annoys me about this release (and the CD2) is the fact that the barcode encroaches onto the spine of the sleeve - I think that looks quite ugly! If they'd never had the idea of having a fan draw a picture for the CD2 version, I think https://i.pinimg.com/originals/40/8e/db/408edb5f137b4f66fc01033847f396c1.jpg from the same photoshoot would have been a nice contrast to CD1. Goodbye CD1 was another "CD single size jewel case" format.

Posted by: Michael Andrew 3rd February 2018, 10:03 AM

I love the slickness of the 'Goodbye' CD1 artwork.

I wasn't sure about Mel B's hair do because, without Ginger, they were already so much less recognisable. But it clearly didn't impact sales.

I wonder if the hairstyle change was due to her 'I Want You Back' promotion. Wasn't that going on at the time?

They all look gorgeous wub.gif They should've gone to Lorenzo Agius for the rest of the 'Forever' campaign!

7th 2 Become 1 [UK Versions] (156 points)

Highest: 1st (Eduardo, HarryEzra)
Lowest: 12th (Spiceboy)

Photographer: Ellen Von Unwerth
Location of photoshoot: London, England
Date of photoshoot: 15th October 1996

We've finally arrived at a cover that is someone's favourite artwork! In fact two of you love this one - Eduardo and HarryEzra both ranked this 1st. 2 Become 1 was their first release to use different pictures on the CD1 & CD2 formats. The single was released in December 1996 in the UK - CD1 in the standard CD single size jewel case, while the CD2 is quite a unique format. It's described as an "exclusive cd gift pack"; it's a cardboard case with a flap that can be opened, which contains a digipak-esque item, with a fold out sleeve (including other pictures from the photoshoot), and a slot to place the disc in. This photoshoot was also used on various official Spice Girls merchandise bedroom items (which figures, as they're posing on a bed!) - https://i.pinimg.com/736x/53/8d/be/538dbe20e9eee4b6da3333c038d6e160--spice-girls-s.jpg, a bedside lamp and wallpaper (all of which I used to have!). There's a bit of a fuzzy quality to all of the pictures from this photoshoot, which I'm personally not overly keen on. It's arguably one of their sexiest photoshoots used for their singles.

Posted by: Michael Andrew 4th February 2018, 10:31 AM

6th Viva Forever [CD1] (164 points)

Highest: 1st (LazySpice88)
Lowest: 13th (letloverule)

Puppets designed and created by: Aardman Animation
Designed by: Joe@Virgin Art

Viva Forever CD1 was their first single artwork to not feature a photograph of the girls themselves, instead they opted for a picture of their puppets from the music video! The puppets are 12 inches high and made out of tin. The stop motion animation technique was used in the video, which resulted in the 4 minute video taking five months to make! The single was released in a "CD single size jewel case" format, and was also their first single release to include an interactive element (the music video). Do you guys like their Viva Forever fairies? I've always found Emma's fairy to be rather freaky looking. laugh.gif

Posted by: Michael Andrew 6th February 2018, 10:44 AM

I flipping love those fairies! But I'm a massive Aardman fan too.

I'm a big fan of the twisted video. Such a contrast to the song. But I understand those who find it odd.

5th Stop (166 points)

Highest: 1st (Mr.X)
Lowest: 12th (Eduardo)

Photographer: Jesse Frohman
Location of photo: New York, United States
Date of photoshoot: May 1997

Stop was released as the third single from the Spice Girls' second album Spiceworld, in March 1998. Interestingly they used a fairly old photoshoot for this - these photos were taken for the magazine Young and Modern in May 1997! Therefore they're older than the pictures used for the Spice Up Your Life & Too Much singles. I wonder why they didn't go with a more recent photo session? Not to worry, because we've deemed it to be within their Top 5 artworks! I really like these covers, particularly the CD1 artwork with 'STOP' being in a very large font size. Even though they're all dressed in white (fairly unusual for them to dress cohesively), their outfits all suit their individual styles (loving Mel B's platforms *.* ). I think I'd have perhaps liked it if CD2 had used a different colour than pink, for a bit of variety. From this photo session they also used a https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cxdbx6sXgAE-bH9.jpg. Both CD1 & CD2 were released in the "CD single size jewel case" formats. CD2 also included a small poster.

4th Wannabe (168 points)

Highest: 2nd (»ïïïïïïïïïïïïï., letloverule)
Lowest: 13th (missing you)

Photographer: Enrique Badulescu
Location of photo: London, England
Date of photoshoot: March 1996

The single that started everything! I've always thought that the "one girl in each letter of the SPICE logo" concept was a stroke of genius. As well as using this theme for Wannabe, they went on to use it for the album covers of 'Spice' and 'Spiceworld'. It was probably for the best that they didn't continue this with other singles, perhaps it would have started to look a bit samey. CD1 was released in a "CD single size jewel case", while CD2 was issued in an album size jewel case. The inlay of this CD folded out into 4 postcards, which you could separate if you wanted to because they're perforated. This single's design clearly had thought put into it, serving as an introduction to what the Spice Girls were all about. It includes this mission statement: "WANTED - anyone with a sense of fun, freedom and adventure hold tight get ready, girl power is comin' at you. On one of the postcards, each member is named, with a description included for each of them (Victoria - cool and classy, Melanie B - wild spirit, Geri - only for the headstrong, Emma - sweet and sassy, Melanie C - fit and funky). Overall I think it's one of their best designed singles, and made them come across as being fresh and exciting. Wannabe was released in the UK in July 1996.

Posted by: Michael Andrew 8th February 2018, 12:09 PM

Having each girl in a letter was an amazing idea. Whoever came up with that should be very proud. Seems like something Geri would dream up.

Nice even light on her face, no hideous shadows, no squinting, a pretty dress, gorgeous hair and make up... I could go on! laugh.gif

3rd Too Much (171 points)

Highest: 1st (Maz!, vibe, …ready for it)
Lowest: 10th (Theo.)

Photographer: Mark Abrahams
Location of photo: London, England
Date of photoshoot: 12th September 1997

The pictures used for Too Much were originally published in the October 1997 issue of https://i.pinimg.com/originals/44/69/6d/44696de65cd5cfb7560782add2036e33.jpg. This is definitely one of my favourite photoshoots, they all look very sophisticated and beautiful! This single came out December 1997, with both CD1 & CD2 released in single size jewel cases. Both formats included Playstation postcards (http://www.lonestarspice.net/singles/playstationcard1.jpg & http://www.lonestarspice.net/singles/playstationcard2.jpg, promoting their critically panned Spiceworld video game (which wasn't actually released until June/July 1998!). I definitely prefer the black cover of Too Much; I think the reddish/purple one shows too much detail to the point it shows it to be quite a slapdash design.

Posted by: Michael Andrew 16th February 2018, 03:31 PM

I agree the black 'Too Much' design is much slicker.

You can tell the shoot was for a fashion mag. So much pouting. laugh.gif

I do prefer to see their individuality shine through a bit more. But still, the photography is beautiful.

Posted by: Jade 26th February 2018, 10:55 PM

I don't think I ever realised how naff the 'Too Much' cover on the right was ohmy.gif the black one indeed looks so much better!

1st Spice Up Your Life (220 points)

Highest: 1st (Spiceboy, Jay, »ïïïïïïïïïïïïï., Jade, Michael Andrew, missing you, letloverule)
Lowest: 8th (LazySpice88)

Jade's bump of this topic reminded me that I hadn't finished this! laugh.gif Her wish comes true, Spice Up Your Life is the winner of the Spice Girls Singles Artwork Rate! cheer.gif wub.gif A very clear winner it is too, finishing 40 points ahead of the runner up, Mama / Who Do You Think You Are.

Interestingly BuzzJack's two favourite artworks were shot by the same photographer, John Rankin Waddell (known professionally as Rankin).

Mama / Who Do You Think You Are used the same picture for CD1/CD2. CD1 (leopard print logo) was released in a digipak format. I think those of you who own this will know what I mean when I say that the format is unconventionally shaped, with it being taller and less wide than a typical CD single size. CD2 (red logo) was released in a normal CD single jewel case, and additionally made note of the fact it was that year's Comic Relief single. I really like the "backwards chair" posing, a concept they'd later use during the Spiceworld tour during their performance of Naked! I also like Geri is doing the Girl Power/peace sign, so iconic! The only other cover where one of the girls is doing a peace sign is Mel B on Stop (unless you count Geri's fairy on Viva Forever!).

Spice Up Your Life is my personal favourite cover, so I'm very pleased that it's won! There's something about this picture which I think perfectly captures the essence of the Spice Girls, at the height of their fame. Emma's knee length socks and platforms *.* Geri's extremely "Ginger Spice" looking outfit (is it a swimsuit or a corset? Negligee? Lol), and Victoria somehow looking incredibly Posh and sophisticated in a see-through dress. cool2.gif I really liked the Spiceworld era group logo with the dots, which adds to the vibrancy of the artwork with a different colour for each letter of 'Spice'. CD1 was released in a CD single jewel size case, while CD2 was released in a digipak format. The one thing I dislike about this single release is the decision for CD2 to feature a tiny picture of the group! As far as I'm aware an HQ of this particular shot has never surfaced. drama.gif

Thanks very much to those of you who contributed to this, whether you ranked, commented or just read this thread! heart.gif
