We all know how stingy the Spice Girls have always been with their music releases.
One of the biggest albums of all time, Spice, has never had a 'special release' over the past 23 years. Re-issues yes, but no added extra content or incentives. The main 'differences' to any of its releases have been the current Vinyl ones which this year they release two - one with blue vinyl in aid of UNICEF and one in White to be released in October. Beyond that, nada. Let's not even talk about Spiceworld.
Now, image that you have the power to green-light and choose re-releases of Spice Girls albums, including the solo ones. What would you do?
Which albums would you re-release and how would you go about it?
How many unreleased tracks would you include? And which ones?
Would you include a DVD with old videos of interviews/making-of?
Would they be limited editions or generally available?
DISCUSSSSSSSS
PS. This is a topic full of love Even if I'm annoyed about that Spice white vinyl
Here's what I would do:
SPICE
Re-issue all 3 Spice Girls studio albums
Spice
- Re-mastered
- inc an extra CD with all b-sides and 2 unreleased tracks that we havent heard yet (no Strong Enough, no1 needs that lol)
Spiceworld
- Remastered
- inc extra CD with all b-sides and 3 unreleased tracks, plus Step To Me
Forever
- Remastered
- A new cover/design with a bit more colour. Maybe an unseen picture from a photoshoot from the era or even Holler's cover. Just not that horrid original design.
- inc extra CD with unreleased tracks inc A Day In Your Life, Pain Proof and Right Back At Ya (Funk mix), plus Go Go Go, Overnight and My Strongest Suit
Spice Girls Forever: The Anthology
- One CD with all their released singles, remastered
- An extra CD with new remixes of all the hits
- A CD with all their b-sides
- An extra CD with rareties inc Step To Me, Move Over, Right Back At Ya (Funk mix), Never Give Up On The Good Times (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oxqX_Q3qvg), On Top of The World and a couple of unreleased tracks such as Treasure, Go Go Go, Pain Proof
- New design inspired by their now iconic design from Spice and Spiceworld and GH. But with inlay pictures that actually represent their various eras, not just the 1st two lol
- A limited edition of the Singles CD on cassette
Spice Girls Forever: The Anthology Vinyl
- Limited edition to 10,000 copies (if it sells out, re-issue it later with 5 different solo covers, each with 2500 copies only
- Two-disk vinyl release, to accommodate all the singles in great quality
- An extra vinyl with 8 new remixes (4 on each side)
EMMA BUNTON
Free Me Delux
- remaster all the songs
- inc So Long, Taking It Easy, Eso Beso and Summer Samba as bonus tracks and TWO unreleased
- An extra CD with remixes inc Maybe (latino mix) and the Crickets' remix from the single + new commissioned remixes of all the singles.
- A new inlay with new design, although keeping the same pink cover as the original UK version. The inlay would include a note by Emma about the making of the album, maybe referencing some stories about the recordings (like the one about Maybe being influenced by porn lol)
- A new limited edition, two-disc vinyl (inc the bonus tracks), 2500 copies only
- A limited edition cassette, 1000 copies only
Life in Mono Delux
- remaster all the original 10 songs + Downtown (not the other covers at the end of the 'special edition' we got lol)
- a second CD with Midnight & Martinis, Ladylike, Secrets and a couple more unreleased songs. Keep it short, maybe 6 tracks in total.
- A new inlay with new design and new cover. The inlay would include a note by Emma about the making of the album, maybe referencing some stories about the recordings
- a limited vinyl edition of 1000 copies
- a limited cassette edition of 1000 copies
None of this will probaby ever happen lol but I could die happy
^ All of the above would be amazing!
A repressing of Spiceworld and a first time pressing of Forever on vinyl are my most desired items, and I'd love a repressing of Greatest Hits on 2x vinyl with original artwork.
Deluxe CDs of all three albums with remastered audio/B Sides/Unreleased tracks (like you have mentioned) would certainly be fantastic. It frustrates me that the label and the girls don't make the most of their back catalogue.
Otherwise, here are some dream items on vinyl:
I just want official Lesbian editions of all of Mel C's solo material.
^ prat
I would like a re - release of the spiceworld live at Wembley DVD
Northern Star signed vinyl would be epic

Jacques on Popjustice designed this mock up of Schizophonic on vinyl, I really wish it existed! https://forum.popjustice.com/threads/vinyljustice-2-0.72006/page-34#post-7638520
And here's some other solo album mock-ups on the vinylstack instagram page.

Oh my that Northern Star one. 😍
Ps what a snub one for LASOM but only one of Melanie C’s albums. 😂. I’d love to see a The Sea one with waves on the vinyl ❤️
OK that Free Me vinyl got me depressed.
I wish it really existed... Why is one of the best albums of the 00s so criminally treated by its own artist and label?!?!?!?!?
I know right
I genuinely believe that there's enough Spice Girls/Emma/pop music fans that would make a Free Me repressing completely worthwhile. I agree that it's such a shame (and honestly, stupid) that 19/Universal pay dust to this era.
Bump
There's still so many things they could do with their back catalogue that doesn't involve new music or unreleased music (as much as I would love both... but they're clearly very resistant about it ).
Now that Forever is coming out on vinyl as a gatefold release, it makes me wish that Spice and Spiceworld could be re-released on vinyl with gatefold editions Sadly I doubt the label would go to that sort of effort to redesign the sleeves. Spiceworld certainly deserved more care for its re-release. It's essentially a direct copy of the original release (with the only notable difference being an edited picture to lengthen Victoria's dress, lol). The reissue had all the incorrect lyrics that were used in the original vinyl release.
I could imagine them eventually re-releasing Spiceworld on white vinyl though, like Spice.
I still dream of a Vinyl singles box set - I posted about this http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=225869&view=findpost&p=6320477 and this vinyl account designed some excellent looking mock-ups (as well as CD/cassette versions) which can be viewed https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17850950696199532/?hl=en. If they didn't want to do a release that included every single, perhaps they could do it by era, for instance just Spice singles. ABBA have a forthcoming singles box set that only includes Super Trouper era releases. https://thesoundofvinyl.com/*/Abba-The-Singles/Super-Trouper-40th-Anniversary-Singles-Box-Set/6OSJ0WE5000
I'm surprised that the label hasn't considered re-issuing the Greatest Hits CD with the new artwork as used on the vinyl. The original CD is always running low on stock (it's actually sold out in HMV).
I hope with the 25th anniversary of Wannabe/Spice next year that their label is considering new items. I know a lot of the above seem money grabbing/low effort, but so many different artists churn out new items. There's always some new ABBA, Beatles or Queen items!
Beyond these music release ideas, I'd still love if they released a large coffee table style book including images from over the past 25 years, with some written commentary. I'm sure they could make something quite beautiful looking... and expensive
I would love a large coffee table book. I would buy that in a heartbeat. There's so much more they could do to milk the fans. Love your ideas Jay.
Welcome to the forum by the way, Sideout!
I'd love forever to get re released as a deluxe and get it to platinum.
I would be very surprised if we didn't get a deluxe edition of Spice next year. It's one of the best selling albums of all time. If they do release one fingers crossed it includes Feed Your Love, Likely Stories, Step To Me and the radio edit of the Who Do You Think You Are Morales Club remix.
We're so close to the 25th anniversary of the Spice era. Do you have any hopes/expectations for physical (or even digital) items you'd like them to release?
Assuming that a Spice album re-release happens, I truly hope they do it justice. I think it should include the B Sides and any unreleased or demo tracks, at the very least. Commissioning some new remixes would be nice. Basically they should do the same as what Sugababes have done for their debut. They need to make a Spice reissue enticing enough for people to want to buy it again! I'll honestly be so disappointed in them/their label if they re-release it but it's just the 10 tracks.
Formats... I mean, there's many possibilities. I think the "individual girl" artwork gimmick would be fun, they could do CDs (maybe slipcases). There's been a number of vinyl editions in recent years, but there's still different things they could do with vinyl - a picture disc would be easy, but ideally they would do a deluxe vinyl with a gatefold sleeve, 2 vinyl, with the second disc having B Sides/unreleased songs (I really won't hold my breath for this lol). Even new cassettes would be cute, they could have different colour cassettes and maybe do the individual girl covers for these too.
I still yearn for a singles box set, on CD and/or 7" vinyl. If they're focusing specifically on the Spice era then maybe this is unrealistic, but even if they only did it for the Spice singles I'd still appreciate it.
I kind of hope that their upcoming anniversary celebrations isn't purely focused on Spice, but is also generally about their whole career, because in that case there's more scope for different items they could release. A book with pictures over the years and commentary from them - I've wanted this to exist since before Return of the Spice Girls era lol. Give it to us!
Spiceworld The Movie re-release on DVD/Blu-ray, please!
When it comes to merch, I hope they can think of more than just t-shirts and hoodies... even new mugs would make a change from the endless hoodies lol.
I think Wannabes anniversary will basically be to set up Spice anniversary. If I had to guess how things will go from what I've heard and filling in the blanks myself it will be -
Pre-order for physical bundles of Spice go up for pre-order the week or weeks before Wannabe anniversary with a Wannabe single included in one of the bundles that will come out in Nov.
I'm certain there will be an exclusive vinyl through a well known UK store that will tie into the above release schedule too of Spice.
How I see the timeline going
End of June pre-order for Spice
July Wannabe anniversary small project by the girls with a big hint of more to come
Beginning of Nov Spice formats release
Week later tour announcement
What formats we get for Spice are mainly down to what UMC feel are most profitable. I'm sure Wannabe will be used to push streaming and Spice pre-orders than anything as there isn't much money to be made from a stand alone Wannabe physical.
The Prince estate has done an amazing job with the reissue of Purple Rain, 1999 and Sign O' The Times. Would love for the girls and Universal Music Group to go deep in the vaults like the Prince estate has. I will be highly disappointed if we don't get Feed Your Love and Likely Stories.
I really hope they focus on the music, highlighting their songwriting talents. A track by track commentary video of the girls, Biffco, Absolute and Eliot Kennedy discussing all of the songs from the Spice era would be a real treat. It would show how they were not a manufactured group. They co-wrote all their songs. This would be great for their legacy.
They just have to include Feed Your Love and Likely Stories as well as Wannabe's demo and the rap-version of Say You'll Be There! It would be wild if they dont... Commission a couple of 'current' acts to do some new mixes of Wannabe, Say You'll Be There and 2 Become 1 too. That would bring the music to a new generation and they could even play with them on tour!
HELL even the If You Cant Dance, Love Thing and 2 Become 1 demos could be really good to show up on a re-release! They were fantastic demos that really showed how different of the rest of pop music they were back then!
That for me is the priority. B-sides be really fun too, of course, but for me this is less a priority.
The thing about these sort of releases is exactly the time to cement your legacy by celebrating it and expanding on it, show how it was done and put together. Dive in on stories around the art works and include previously-unheard material. It's just common sense to do that.
YES YES YES! to the above comments
I cant quite yet believe that we are getting Feed Your Love after all these years OFFICIALLY
Hope we will get more later this year too!!
After all the pointless Spice vinyl reissues I can't believe they're actually finally going to release something worthwhile
Hopefully the girls/UMC see the fans demand for a filmed/audio recorded concert. Would be great to close this anniversary with DVD/Blu-Ray/Netflix recording of their anniversary tour with a live album on the streaming services.
A live album would be excellent to be honest! Really cement their touring career, in my opinion. It is a shame that teh Birmingham audio was never released. They should have totally recorded the Wembley dates back in 1998 and 2019 and release those as live albums!
Yeah definitely think that's something that could be put forward to the team at UMC through some of us fans that the live album sat in the vaults would be amazing to have.
I’m still gobsmacked they didn’t release Wembley as a live album in 1998 it was a sure fire smash hit live album waiting to happen!!?!
I wish they were like Kylie nearly all her tours since Showgirl have live albums on Spotify. Imagine if we had Istanbul,Birmingham’98,Wembley’98,Earl’s Court,O2 Arena 2007 and Wembley 2019 all on Spotify/Apple Music that would’ve been amazing but I know it’s the Spice Girls and I’m asking too much
There is really no reason they can't put the Birmingham live album on Spotify, they don't even have to release a physical (although they should!!) if they don't want to. I mean I think they could easily go top 10 and probably top 3 depending on the time of year they released it if they did go the full whack.
They could easily cash in with it a bit with minimal effort. I can see it going Top10 (maybe a 5 or 6) for one week at least.
It is a shame because we know that those recordings exist. In fact the only tour we know wasn't audio broadcast (and thus, recorded) was Spiceworld 2019. Even the return tour had a Radio 2 broadcast.
Slap it on the interwebs and do a vinyl and call it a day!
(are we getting away with our luck here though? .... We will most probably get nothing new so I hope we can still dream lol
They should have released a Live CD from their tour with a bonus dvd.
With them never releasing a Live album the fans would give it huge support.
Double you h*e M&Ms / Independent like a Walmart
With Geraldine ad-libs
I want Spice to be released with alternative mixes or duets, like The OG Sugababes are doing.
I hope the Spice release will have song we haven’t heard yet. But nothing demo-ish. They can afford to do some mixing and mastering here and there.
