26th March 2017

It's that flop classic from January 1968 on top, the beloved (by oldies) Alone Again Or from the cult band Love. It's dark and New Wave-y in a hippie psychedelic tuneful way and ahead of it's time. The top 20 though is full of activity and new entries, starting with 2 album tracks from Spoon and Gorillaz at 5 and 6. Far be it from me to tell artists what they should release as singles - OK strike that, just do as I say and release them as singles! I'll raise that one for Take That as well, up to 10 with the official single Giants, but the next-best album track is in at 27, and it's a New Day. Bung in London Grammar with the lovely album track Truth Is A Beautiful Thing doing what the first single off the new album didn't do - inspire me to buy it.

LP do well in Europe, and about time they caught on here, in at 12, just behind the interestingly Prodigy-with-a-tune of Paper Route. Leonard Cohen's fab dance remix of his last album title track is still as dark as one might expect, but a groove to boot, and up to 24. Pink and Sia get further top 40's, Stargate-assisted, to add to their long runs, both won't be far short of 20 years before long. Steps are back! Actually they popped back into my top 10 a few years back with a flop, but nice, ballad, but are back on pure late 90's pop-cheese form at 64. Diane Warren take note of the tune...

It's a 60's party at the bottom end, as The Beatles chart another Abbey Road album track. What's the difference between the UK chart and my chart? The album tracks in my chart are by different acts and all deserve to be singles, and the album tracks in the UK charts are by the same two acts, and errr, don't. The Hollies are also in with their 1972 US hit, and UK mini-hit, but which was excluded from my top 20 of the time (I only included official top 30 singles) but would otherwise have been a biggish hit for me. So the new meh-ish Kong movie gives me an opportunity to set a wrong to right and chart it properly now. It's essentially The Hollies doing a very good Creedence Clearwater Revival impression, and will be joined next week by the real thing, also in the same movie with an uncharted chart.
