2. Coldplay – Hypnotised

Surprise! Well maybe not, they are my favourite band after all, but I don't think I've expressed my love for this quite as much this year as all their releases off their EP have been quite low key and honestly this aside, forgettable which have been disappointing, but Hypnotised, though it certainly won't win any converts, feels like a callback to the Coldplay that really did become my favourite band. Running at almost six minutes, it's less in sync with popular sounds as their last few singles and perfectly reflects the sound of Parachutes and Rush of Blood... well, I do very much love the lyrics too, the one that was in the subtitle (yep I did that trick again, you should know I do that by now) especially, preceded by 'it's easy to be lethal, learning from the news'. There's all the standard Coldplay tropes in here such as the 'ohs' and twinkling piano and falsetto so there really isn't much you could ask for them, for me at least this felt like the type of Coldplay single I've been waiting for for years even if I have loved most of their others and one that whilst it won't set the charts alight, shows they're not all sellout and know the sound that suits them best.

1. Steven Wilson feat. Ninet Tayab – Pariah

It's somewhat fitting isn't it? The year I rediscover Steven Wilson, he is my number 1 song and fittingly, had some new material out to coincide with that. I haven't actually listened to the parent album of this yet which is very much my bad, but based on this I'd certainly want to. Now, he's been getting quite a lot of stick from fans that this material is deviating a lot from his usual prog-rock anthems, and based on some of the other singles it does seem that way, but that shouldn't be a drawback as he is allowed to experiment in sound and Pariah feels a perfect medium between both phases. It's quite accessible, you could easily hear it on the radio, but it has that sheer emotional and angsty value that is almost exclusive to this genre. Starting as a quiet musing, the chorus sung beautifully by the haunting vocals of Ninet Tayab is reaching an emotional hand out to the listener, the track builds gradually and eventually the emotions get more desperate and it all comes out in a spine-tingling guitar riff that truly releases all the pent up emotions bought through the track. It's such a perfect narrative of the cycle of grief and a heartwarming duet at the same time. It definitely bought a few tears to my eye this year, especially as I have been feeling some effects of being a bit lonely sometimes so it resonated with me more than most. A supremely beautiful track that can appeal to all listeners without alienating any, it really can't have been anything else as my number 1 of the year. Nothing really ends...

Didn't expect FM-84 to appear as high as #3 here ;o Fair to say you enjoy it more than I the sender of that track as it was #241 in my EOY.

Not surprised for Steven Wilson at #1 though, it's a great track for its genre.

Ooh yay at your No.1 Chez, definitely my favourite BJSC entry of yours last year, what an epic. Africa was very good too so nice to see that in the top 10 as well!

Tina Guo sneaking into the top 40 too *.*

Ha at Liar Liar making it, I guess it's quite a catchy song! Hilarious that it made the UK top five.
