In general movie news:

> A 'Bob's Burgers' movie has been announced for 2020.
> Kate Winslet is joining the cast of the upcoming Avatar sequels.
> Anna Paquin has been cast in Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman'.
> Chuck Low (from Goodfellas & Sleepers) has died, aged 89.
> Jared Leto set to play Hugh Hefner in upcoming biopic.

Not that excited for the Avatar sequels to be honest after finding the first one a bit dull and a bit long but Kate's addition has definitely hyped me up a bit, one of my favourite actresses working at the moment! wub.gif

I'm sure some of you have seen already but Harvey Weinstein has been under fire too this week for sexual abuse allegations. He is a film producer and co-chairman of The Weinstein Company who have distributed movies including Lion, The King's Speech and Silver Linings Playbook in recent years. Famous faces including the likes of Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Mark Ruffalo and Judi Dench have spoken out in support for the victims.

Awful to have this case and Andy Signore allegations all come out in the space of a few days. Makes you wonder how much is still going on in Hollywood that gets covered up :/

QUOTE
Matt Damon, Russell Crowe Reportedly Helped Kill a 2004 New York Times Harvey Weinstein Article

Though the New York Times has been widely celebrated for its article exposing decades of sexual-harassment accusations against Harvey Weinstein, one journalist claims the paper sat on an earlier article detailing the producer’s misconduct. Sharon Waxman, founder of the Wrap, writes that her own investigate reporting, which took her on an international trip to uncover rumors of Weinstein’s sexual misconduct, was cut from the Times in 2004 under pressure from several Hollywood elites. Waxman alleges in the Wrap that Matt Damon and Russell Crowe called her “directly” to dispel the reports she was following about Miramax’s Italian head Fabrizio Lombardo, who was allegedly hired “to take care of Weinstein’s women needs.” She says that because of their influence, and interference from Weinstein, whose company was a big advertiser in the Times, the article was edited to remove the more salacious details. Damon and Crowe had previously worked with Weinstein on pictures like Good Will Hunting, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and Cinderella Man.

Waxman claims that the gutted story could have exposed Weinstein much earlier. “I had people on the record telling me Lombardo knew nothing about film, and others citing evenings he organized with Russian escorts,” Waxman said. She also alleges that she tracked down an intern in London who had been paid off in a settlement with Weinstein. “I was devastated after traveling to two countries and overcoming immense challenges to confirm at least part of the story that wound up running last week, more than a decade later,” she writes.

Vulture has reached out to representatives for Matt Damon and Russell Crowe for a comment. This post will be updated if more information becomes available.

That whole story is disgusting and upsetting to hear. But to hear about Matt Damon helping to hide the story is gutting. sad.gif Russell Crowe actually doesn't surprise me so much, I've always found him a bit.. off.

In other news, 'Blade Runner 2049' was comfortably #1 in the box office.. but only opened to $35m! That's shockingly low!

Oh yes! Here's the US Box Office was for last weekend!

1 Blade Runner - $32,753,122
2 The Mountain Between Us - $10,551,336
3 It - $9,972,002
4 My Little Pony - $8,885,899
5 Kingsman - $8,675,412
6 American Made - $8,446,715
7 Lego Ninjago - $7,002,474
8 Victoria & Abdul - $4,171,870
9 Flatliners - $3,975,021
10 Battle of the Sexes - $$2,562,066

I'm a bit shocked at how high the Blade Runner number actually is. I know projections were expecting more but the trailers were completely boring and the movies always seemed more like a cult classic rather than a proper classic (the difference between Zoolander and Jurassic Park to use other modern examples) and it doesn't really have any Box Office draws in the cast (debatable if these even exist anymore I guess but Gosling doesn't have the best Box Office track record...). I'm a BIG movie fan and I certainly wouldn't have paid to see it if I didn't have an unlimited card laugh.gif

Some Disney news:

- Marvel are developing a LEGO based on Black Panther (I think it's going to be a straight to DVD thing though as far as I can tell).

- Disney have cancelled Gigantic (animated film based on Jack and the Beanstalk). It's been in development for years now and was even one of the movies parodied on the DVD stall in Zootopia but it's now been replaced by an unannounced Disney animated film set for the same 2020 release date.

I wasn't all that excited for Gigantic based on the premise so I hope it is going to be something exciting in its place. I'd quite like a sequel personally but it would be nice to see something original again like Zootopia or Wreck-It Ralph, I guess.

48 Metres Down (sequel to 47 Metres Down heehee.gif) has a release date set for June 2019.

Very far away so it's hard to get hyped but I actually really enjoyed the first one, it would make a great silly/campy horror franchise and it made a fair bit on such a low budget so yay at them making this!! cheer.gif

Update:

He has been found guilty of rape!

QUOTE
Harvey Weinstein found guilty at rape trial

Film mogul faces prison time, as verdict may encourage more women to come forward after abuse and change the way crimes are prosecuted.

Harvey Weinstein, the fallen titan of Hollywood whose sexual abuse of aspiring young female actors sparked the #MeToo movement, has finally been brought to justice after a New York jury found him guilty.

The movie mogul’s epic fall from grace is now complete, toppled from the pinnacle of independent cinema where he helmed films such as Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love, amassing a total of 81 Oscars. The glamorous Manhattan and Los Angeles lifestyle he once enjoyed will soon be replaced by a New York state prison cell as he faces jail time.

The jury of seven men and five women at the New York supreme court took five days to reach their verdict.

The conviction marks the final comeuppance for a towering figure who wielded his power in the movie industry – as well as his commanding physical presence – over vulnerable young women seeking his help.

Though Judge James Burke cautioned the jury not to see the case as a referendum on #MeToo, Weinstein’s conviction is certain to have far-reaching consequences for gender relations in the workplace, in Hollywood and far beyond. The world of powerful men who deploy their seniority as tools of sexual control is much less secure in its wake.

Michelle Simpson Tuegel, an attorney representing victims of sexual assault, said she expected to see a wave of women coming forward with complaints against other sexual abusers. “No matter how powerful a person is, no matter how much mud or dirt may be flung at those who have the courage to come forward, we are in a new time. The #MeToo era has thankfully started to unmask these systems of abuse of power, and now women can be heard and believed.”

The guilty verdict could also have a profound impact on the way sex crimes are prosecuted. The New York district attorney’s office took an enormous gamble in how they set up the trial.

Prosecutors chose as main accusers two women, both of whom continued to have close – and at times sexual – contact with Weinstein after they were attacked. In the past, prosecutors have almost always balked at such cases where coerced and consensual sex exists side-by-side, considering them too messy to secure guilty verdicts.

The fact that the tactic succeeded with the jury is a sign of the shifting sands of #MeToo. It suggests that prosecutors might have far more leeway in future to take on cases where victims continue to be in the thrall of their attackers after sexual assaults – a scenario which sex crimes experts say is all too common and yet up til now has been almost entirely neglected by the criminal courts.

As psychiatrist Barbara Ziv told the jury in expert testimony, “it is the norm to have contact with the assailant.”

Such a striking victory can be credited to the two intrepid prosecutors, Joan Illuzzi-Orbon and Meghan Hast, who meticulously laid out the defendant’s culpability. They did so against the headwinds generated by Weinstein’s lawyers led by the Chicago-based sex crimes defender Donna Rotunno who was so aggressive towards witnesses that she induced in one of the two main accusers a fully fledged panic attack.
YES!

Bye!

The Pirates film that Margot is attached to isn't a reboot (although they ARE planning on rebooting the main franchise!) is it? ohmy.gif I'm excited for it and I'm not really a POTC fan!

'Mulan' and 'Tenet' aren't pushed back as far as I thought they would be! Hopefully we'll get to see them sad.gif

I like 'Twister'. Didn't love it and prefer the other 90's disaster movies like 'Volcano' or 'Dantes Peak', but it was 90's fun! I think they're movies that could just be made without being needed to reboot or remake. Natural disasters happen all the time, so they could make another one.

Not a fan of the Michael Keaton as Batman in The Flash movie though.. drama.gif (Just like how I'd rather J.K. Simmons wasn't in MCU as the same character he was in the original SM movies). It's just getting unnecessarily complicated and confusing now sad.gif At least there's a legit theory with MCU world and a multi-verse being opened up to allow that to happen. This Michael Keaton as Batman just seems desperate at this point.
