Our fellow BJSC 74 debutants Cor Lupus receive their first ever medal position from us! Prior to this contest we had awarded them 12 points on two occasions - BJSC 75 (for 'Push') and BJSC 88 (for their AQ 'Way Of Life'). 'Weekends' would have been our 12 in the other semi and it has not fallen in our affections at all, it was just a case of another song in that semi growing even more. Anyway, this is way better than I ever remember 'People' being from the one time I heard it. This infectious and catchy ("I've got all my friends" has not left my head very much this week) delight is our tip for the win.

15 Kluminican Republic | Burial - Archangel

Klum Rep are another country that find themselves in our medal positions for the first time! Their previous best was an 11 for 'Lone Digger'. We did not know much of Burial prior to this contest except for their brilliant song in the Xmas spinoff. This was once again a slice of genius but it was just on a whole other level. *.* It was an extremely easy 12 in the semi and just missed out on our 18 due to the growing power of FLJ. Still, this is an excellent place to land - we cannot resist the garage vibes of this one and hope it does well tonight for the nation. #indiebloc rise!!

18 Fljótavík | UNKLE - Looking for the Rain (feat. Mark Lanegan & ESKA)

Here we do actually have a country that have received a medal position from us before, but this is still an 18 for the first time so congrats FLJ! Their previous best was a 15 from us for 'Anekdoter'. So, we discovered UNKLE last year thanks to Mr D* himself (following a recommendation in my NMTBJ thread) and absolutely loved the work of them/DJ Shadow. Naturally we were VERY excited when we saw UNKLE in semi 2 as a result! First listen the Jadakissnian thoughts were all over the place - we loved the cinematic and sinister feel of 'Looking for the Rain' (those strings are just EVERYTHING *.*) but the vox were a bit unexpected and not entirely instant. So we would have 'only' given this 7 points if we had been in semi 2. Thankfully it has all clicked into place since that first listen and we just adore every element of this song now. Simply goosebump inducing. We hope that it gets a fair amount of medal positions chucked at it!

- Alteria match the 6 points we gave their first qualifier, with another goodun from them this month in the form of a twenty one pilots pastiche. 7 points go to Aeroche's ~heartfelt tribute entry~, a classic banger (and well worth the extra minutes of buildup in the full version ) Our newfound faves in 2017 FSR Rontvia claim 8 more points with their Turkish jam (better than the Khaled version in our humble opinion), while Jadakissnia of course continue to be faves for us as in 2015 and 2016, and it's no exception this month as another spoopy bloopy jam gives them 9 more points. Varakë take our 10 with their encapsulating Romanian deep house track which should definitely be a big Eurohit if it isn't already.

- A brilliantly cinematic offering, no disappointment here from UNKLE who still need to make much more of a breakthrough here in Persephonia x

- Truly glorious and unique, was much needed in the semi-final to break up a monotonous run of basic pop songs but stands on its own two (peg) legs very well too, yo ho ho *.*

13 St. Burbia // Tasha Tah - Malang (feat. RaOol)

- What can we say, Punjabi trashpop is always best trashpop! A song we probably shouldn't stan this much but it's just irresistible, one of the catchiest entries this month and with great production to boot, a big grower and our new fave St. Burbia entry to date.

15 Deandria // World's End Girlfriend - Les Enfants Du Paradis

- Totally chaotic and lacking in any structure but honestly who cares when a song is this much of a fantastic barrage of sound. Best played ear-splittingly loud (although maybe turning it down just in time for the headphone-killing noise at the end )

18 Kluminican Republic // Burial - Archangel

- Our 18 could never have gone to anyone else, this song has been an absolute favourite of Persephonian audiences for a decade even though they didn't know what the song was called until being enlightened by this contest, Burial is a legend who can do no wrong, such a persistently fresh sound. Well deserved first ever top points from us to Kluminican Republic. This for dark horse top 5 / 10 please

The most obvious 18 points of the night goes to Aeroche with the classic Sir Joel "deadmau5" Zimmerman instrumental 'Strobe'. We've been familiar with this for years but it wouldn't feel right to give it any less cos it's absolutely brilliant.

15 points go to Leon Else, who represented us last contest and clearly he's consistent as this new song is great as well. It is probably the most we've ever given to Ojnoj too so well done for that.

Our 13 points go to Dobago Varakë with their brilliant return entry 'Visele'. In a contest with quite a few good foreign-language songs, this one comes out on top but big points also go to FSR Rontvia and Altyr Muunilinst for their efforts.

An entry I was really intrigued by! A song by an artist I have heard of many times but haven’t really properly checked out. Maybe this will change soon enough now! The subtle vocal melody mixed with those rather frantic and experimental beats make for a listen that seems to convey some kind of existential anxiety of sorts, but doesn’t fail to be a beautiful song that just… gets under my skin.
