Good evening, this is Ricardo Delta coming live from Constarvan's Emerald Arena in FSR Rontvia!

You've been voting all week and we do have a winner of BJSC 65. Prepare for an evening of excitement, twists and turns, the expected, the unexpected, the hits, the flops, the drama and so much more. The contest is back in FSR Rontvia for the first time since July 2011, almost three years ago, thanks to RAM and Susana's epic trance ballad RAMelia (Tribute To Amelia) which gave the nation our 8th win last month. This month the nation is represented by German singer Andreas Bourani with the song Auf Uns, find out how that, and the other 31 songs do, later.

Everybody in the final voted so thank you all for that, there will be no deductions. DNQ'ing Semi-finalists Kopecka Nork and Juranabaijan failed to vote and will not be permitted to enter BJSC 66, which will be held in...watch this space!

The evening will kick off at 7 but first we have a spectacular acoustic performance for you from last month's winners RAM and Susana:

pretty convinced it'll be a Hendinia win. while Lipstick isn't bad, there are plenty of other contenders i'd rather see taking the crown (MDICE for one *.*)

not sure what my expectations for Blawan are (well, not particularly high at the moment, but i hope the dance crew have appreciated it at least <3 especially Thermo (who YES i have seen being shady putting me last in his odds/predicta >.>))

Sanna Nielsen: "Good evening everybody, welcome to the red carpet coverage of BJSC 65, the finalists and some of the supportive DNQ'ing nations are arriving as we speak and I'm here to guide you through the proceedings (alongside Christer Bjorkman, but he won't be speaking). My name is Sanna and I represented FSR Rontvia in the 9th contest back in August 2008 with Nobody Without You, which finished 4th. Since then I've won Melodifestivalen, finished 3rd in Eurovision and scored a UK top 40 smash, all with Undo, a song which spent 6 weeks at No.1 in FSR Rontvia. They have kindly asked me to be tonight's co-host, following on from last week's help from Maria and Mira and the Loose Lingerie team!

Arriving first is the D'yermak'er entrant LOLO with her friend!



How do you rate your chances tonight LOLO?"

LOLO: "I'm not sure, I'm just hoping for a good result and it should be a very exciting evening, the RTVN have really pumped a lot of money into this, the stage looks amazing!"

Sanna: "Yes you're right, it was all so much more basic when I participated in 2008, now over 50 countries enter, it's wild! Oh look, there's the Ashton entrant Kristin Amparo!



Are you excited for tonight Kristin, we very much support Ashton's initiative to only send foreign language tracks this year and Din Soldat is another great one. How do you feel about representing Ashton?"

Kristin: "It's such a great honour to represent a country that has been in every contest since BJSC began, much like FSR Rontvia. Along with Kylienips they truly do make up the old guard. We're hoping for a hit tonight, it will be interesting to see how our song has gone down, it's turning into a huge summer smash in Sweden"

Archis and the Séyetan delegation should hopefully be here for the majority of the evening. Dia remains hopeful for a top half result.

Very excited to see what the winner will be though, don't think I can call it at all.

It's funny, I sort of ironically loved the song before I knew you were sending it, but now I properly love it, to the extent that it's top ten in my personal chart (along with Cold, and following Tico and Family Tree last month!), which is rare for 'foreign' BJSC songs these days!

Fljótavík seem to be on an unstoppable roll as they score a third 12 in a row, and move into the top five! Could they 12 their way to victory despite wide indifference from most of the voting countries thus far? Lots of mid-table climbs courtesy of Cumulonimbia, and 4 more points for the leaders Séyetana but the major news, to Tartford at least, is that everyone is finally off nul points!

Ashton fail to award any points to Altyr, N DNTN or Zechonia which means that N DNTN have done it!!! The eternal bridesmaid becomes the bride and poor Altyr will have to continue their long wait for a win, but do bag a personal best of 2nd place, a heartbreaking 1 point behind the winner!

Hendinia climb into third in the dying seconds leaving Zechonia in 4th after leading for much of the show! Ashton lift Séyetana into the top five in the dying moments while their 12 for Isconia takes them into the top ten leaving poor Mdice and Bignia-Zaragovina just outside!

Congrats too to the other top ten finishers, Republic of Adonia, on their debut month, Kylienips, Daehun and Oslol!

A 10 for FSR Rontvia leaves the host nation with a sensational (for a German language male track) 13th place, and a 7th hit in a row! The crowd can't contain themselves at the news and Andreas looks elated!

Heading underneath the top 16 and in 'flop territory' going by the old Rontvian definition of anything that DNQ's or finishes in the lower half of the final (which admittedly may need updating when even 20th place grabs over 90 points) we find favourites Ramrynia in 17th and Syndare down in 25th! Otherwise the results generally tally up with many of the odds and predictas!

From the semi results, and the fact that on the face of it Semi 1 seemed more N DNTN friendly, I had no idea that they would win, it came as a complete shock to me, I thought it was a straight Altyr/Kylienips fight!

I'm happy for Chris finally winning and feel slightly bad for John (especially as it was my favourite song in the contest) and Zech!

Have to feel bad for Danaelanda getting yet another 11th-15th place finish with still no top 10s to their name

Altyr getting another semi win, must be approaching a record there especially for a country that have never won (they also won on most votes received which they've done at least twice or so before). Poor John. Though 'Tear The House Up' is like an infinitely better winner than 'Cold' so my sympathy is limited ~

I am fairly confident about my next entry, a bit of Aero-dance which I should hope might do fairly well? Unless only Leww is allowed to get away with that sound.

I find it so bizarre how N DNTN and Syndare finished 11th/12th in the same semi and 1st/25th in the final, just shows how different the music tastes of the incoming Semi 2 voters were!

As an independent observer I can confirm the final scoreboard is correct anyhow (all the way down to the Ashton/Cumulonimbia tie going down to most 5s, I was expecting that tie to be somewhere near the bottom (like the Elëdan/Espen tie last month), surprising to find it midtable!)

The ties in the spreadsheets weren't necessarily in order but the final leaderboard on page 18 is 100% correct.



I literally checked over the scoreboards with a fine toothcomb and various calculation totals to make sure everything was 100% spot on, so I'm glad they're alright!

That tie was so bizarre, those two songs are so different yet scored almost identically!

I find Cold a lot more subtle and more produced than Don't Go which was a very simple piano ballad, the sort of thing you either like or don't like, so I can see how that finished bang in the middle and I can see how Cold had more widespread appeal than that. I can definitely understand how you could love one without loving the other though. Don't Go was very instant for me as piano ballads are my thang, whereas Cold and Do You Even Know took some time, but now I absolutely ADORE them both.

Her vocals are a lot more raw, fragile and potentially jarring to some people on Don't Go but they're more restrained and polished on Cold. She's learnt how to reign in her vocals over the past two years and her pronunciation is better.

BJSC is so split down the middle these days though, whereas it used to be a predominantly pop contest. Lipstick would have easily won in 2010. Now when you send a big tacky pop song you have to be aware that a good 20-25 countries are just going to avoid it like the plague. That still leaves 25-30 pop or 'in the middle' countries to potentially reap votes from and Lipstick pretty much hoovered up all of those!

There's a much bigger chance these days for a song to essentially 12 its way to victory too, or rather win by getting huge votes from a clutch of people, if it ticks all the boxes for everyone within a certain voting demographic. N DNTN was voted for by 22/54 countries. 32 countries didn't vote for the winner but the countries that did vote for it largely absolutely loved it.

Thanks again to everyone who voted for Kitty, I'm glad that I managed to move up to 17th by the end after spending the majority of the contest in the bottom 10. It looks like people may have believed the little bit of hype I managed to create for myself! The reason I did it was because it was such a different entry to a typical Ramrynia entry and therefore was very unsure as to whether it would be liked by anyone which is why I felt the need to draw lots of attention to it so people may subconsciously give more attention to it.

It was fun to try all this hype business anyway and for all I know, I may have come bottom 5 or so without it or I may have put people off due to them getting fed up with my incessant posting! I'm glad I managed to cause quite a reaction with such a different and inspired entry and it does give me more confidence to continue to try slightly different genres knowing that I did qualify and get nearly 100 points.

Congratulations to Chris on finally winning - great feeling that I got the 12 points from the eventual winner! Great hosting from Rich also and I look forward to the next contest. I do have a song already lined up (another very inspired choice - what is happening to me?) and if I go with it I think it could do quite well but it depends how instant people find the song as it did take me a couple of listens to fully appreciate it and it continues to grow with every listen.

I hate to be an arse but why do I come last out of this four way tie? Ramrynia had more votes than anyone but I had more 12s than Ashton and Cumulonimbia, which I would've thought take priority over more 5s. Such a crazy tie though!

I never thought my favourite tracks in the top 15 would be by Rontvia and Zechonia! The final was good but the scoreboard would be much more satisfying if it were upsidedown. Ehh.

aren't these two points basically the same thing tho? like pretty much all my entries have done this and yet i've never managed to win before.... a banging pop song is just as likely / potentially even more likely to 12 its way to victory by that logic. i still fail to see how ppl are using this 'pop songs are at a disadvantage' thing to justify why they didn't win when it's so obviously not true.

I do agree, I'm certainly not trying to devalue your win, you won fair and square by scoring the most points out of 32 entries, no mean feat regardless of the way it got there!

I think it comes down to the competition on offer as well and nothing in the contest sounded like Tear The House Up this month so it did well through its uniqueness. Quite similar to RAMelia last month in that respect, I honestly thought it would come bottom half of the final at best when I confirmed it. It was only when I listened to the rest of the entries and realised how much it stood out of the pack that I started to think it would win.

Similarly, Lipstick was the really only huge proper pop song in the competition this month and hoovered up almost all of the big pop points. In a month where 5 similar songs might have been entered its effect would have been diluted quite a bit no doubt.

But my point is that BJSC used to be about trying to appeal to everyone in a reasonably big way (as it was pretty much a pop contest through and through). Now it's more about appealing to half of the voters in a huge way, seeing as there are two very opposing demographics now and probably only 10-15 countries sitting in the middle. As I watched the votes roll in, there were a good 30 sets that I could have largely guessed what people had voted for before I'd even seen the PM. Not a bad thing, but you certainly get used to people's tastes! When the whole comp was tacky pop songs it was obviously much harder to guess which tacky pop songs people would favour

I'm not sure I would say that's entirely accurate. On a scale of pure/tacky pop to whatever you want to call the opposite end ('indie' is hideously inaccurate so I refuse to use that term) you get some songs that are very far on the pop end of the spectrum but pretty much none that are far towards the other end (and those that are will pretty much invariably be weeded out in the semis for being too niche e.g. Zechonia's rockier entries and Séyetana's non-Nightwish metal entries). So I'd say you either try and appeal to the core pop hoes at the expense of the half of voters who won't touch it with a bargepole, or you play the middle ground and hope for crossover. It seems to me that you still need to be pretty close to the pop end to have a chance of winning, it's just that the pop hoes have a tendency to only consider terrible trashy pop to be 'pop' and all other music is 'indie' so we get people moaning when pop songs win that 'pop songs never win'.

I expect there will be a 'Lipstick' esque song that blasts to victory through receiving a billion 12s again one day. Arguably there already was one in 'Sissy That Walk' of course but that's not really quite the same.

Oh, I never complained with my point at all! I'm delighted Lipstick came 3rd and I don't think any factors could be played to say I should've won etc, N DNTN won fair and square and I'm completely happy with doing well again as I didn't expect anywhere near that result when I sent it! Like you say, I was effectively the same as N DNTN, I got to 3rd on the back of 5 12's and a whole heap of high points, only 18/53 people even voted for it, which is only just a third of the people.

The winners have been very interesting this year and show that you really can't pinpoint BJSC at the moment. Trashy pop won 2 contests ago, trance won last month, rap-dance won this contest. It's exciting but a hell of a lot more difficult, like Rich said, I have no doubt I'd have won comfortably in 2010 with Lipstick but BJSC is so much more diverse now.

What's amazing is how much the quality has gone up overall in the last year or two. When songs right near the bottom are scoring only 60 points less than the winner you can see how spread out the points usually are these days, which is testament to the diverse range of great stuff being sent. 'Flopping' in 23rd with 85 points or whatever is actually nothing to be ashamed of at all.

I am starting to worry that i might have to sit out for the next contest as i'm going to Canada for 2.5 weeks at the start of July </3 I will wait for more concrete dates though and could probably try finding a way to listen while i'm out there but i'll be extremely busy with wedding stuff and i'm not sure i want to risk a ban for the contest that follows if i don't get time to vote..

Another month, another winner that I didn't vote for, seems like it's been so long now </3 nor the top 3 it seems, Tear The House Up grew on me quite a bit in the final though and the most preferable out of the three, wonderful to see N DNTN finally get a win as well. As for the rest, Great to see Zechonia, Kylienips & Adonia have such good results, what a debut for the latter in particular.

Kinda sad that Hercules & Love Affair & Kitty Pryde kinda underperformed in the end, thought they'd both stand a chance at winning :'( I also see my 12 and 10 pointer finished next to each other yay Thanks to both countries for those, two absolutely brilliant discoveries. Also echo everyone else - flawless hosting Rich!

Unfortunate to report that you will have to have a bird-free contest next month as I'm away for the latter part of next month, so definitely won't have time to vote at all. Hopefully I'll use the time to find a smash to come back with in August~
