2nd JAN 1994

Starting the year with some new years oldies: that’s Frankie Goes To Hollywood 1984 chart-topper back at the top 10 years on, and also a New Years Eve live concert in Bournemouth. Support act were the fab T.Rexstasy doing a great Marc Bolan with tracks like Hot Love and Get It On, and headline act was now-disgraced popstar Gary Glitter. Back in the 80’s and early 90’s he was annual live xmas draw, a great night out, lads singalong, and it was even broadcast live on TV from Bournemouth one year. Great records like Rock & Roll, I Didn’t Know I Loved You and Always Yours were fab to singalong to. Who knew eh…

The usual post-Christmas slow-down in my charts was countered here by great cult and occasional minor chart band The The with a big Top 20 new entry, and a high re-entry for US mega-hit chanter Whoomp! There It Is. I think the UK chart version was a lesser remix though, eventually. Mike Oldfield gets Portsmouth and In Dulce Jubilo into the Top for the 2nd time, and Top 20 for the 3rd time. I went to see Portsmouth play Newcastle a few years back and it was great to hear Mike Oldfield still being played somewhere!

Other than that, lots of MOR soul, bit of reggae, and some big names back with ballads, like Diana Ross (her great years were behind her by now) and Wet Wet Wet (sporadically good, as here). In my life, my year of playing golf was coming to an end as I couldn’t get the hang of it, so I stuck with darts and snooker, badminton and squash with mates instead. What a lad, eh?

9th JAN 1994

Janet Jackson gets her 3rd Number One with a lovely gentle ballad, The The shoot into the Top 5 and Wet Wet Wet positively rocket up to 7 with a minor sweet ballad. Lots of remixes and re-entries enter, from D:Ream’s anthem (plus Prof Cox) and Mission’s 80’s gothrocker to REM’s great non-hit. Meanwhile Darlene Love gets a late Christmas hit, one of the 90’s few goodies in that genre, and 30 years after her previous classics with Phil Spector. Apart from those, the lack of good new releases allows more MOR and lesser records to climb, flattering them more than they deserve…

16th JAN 1994

Straight in at Number One, by virtue of being a charting album track that had previously never charted, Queen finally get that deserved topper with the B Side of We Are The Champions. Outrageous it wasn’t an A Side, it gives Queen their 7th Number One (and Freddie’s 8th) while D;Ream’s Top 10 1993 hit goes Top 5 in remix form but doesn’t quite top the chart (like Ur The Best Thing did). A Beatles (and others) cover hits 10 reggae stylee, Bitty McLean reggaes into the Top 20 and Aretha’s last great dance single enters at 23. Things get a bit more interesting lower down the chart with new entries for Ace Of Base, Ce Ce Peniston (thank heavens for the last 3 letters, eh?), Terrorvision (one of my fave frantic pop metal acts of the time), and Cher sees the funny side of Beavis & Butt-head. More than I ever did….

This week, outside the charts, I was also loving the (Bob) Newhart (Henry Mancini instrumental) TV theme (should have allowed it to chart!), oldie Tom Tom Turnaround (oh how I wish someone would cover that on The Voice just for a laugh - Sir Tom Jones in the chair? Please yourself!), and Best Of Blue Mink a forgotten greatest hits package filled with perfect pop and soul singles from 4 years of hits.

23rd JAN 1994

Daryl Hall gets his only solo chart-topper with a Marvin Gaye tribute (ish) soul song 12 years after his previous (with John Oates) I Can’t Go For That. Still going strong they appear in Bournemouth this year and Daryl has his own internet show. Def Leppard meanwhile copy The Sweet by going Top 10 with Action, and straight into the Top 10 Enigma’s new sound 3 years on from big Number One Sadeness. Inspiral Carpets rocket (literally) into the 20 with Saturn V. You can stand under one of these in Florida, they are Huge! Thomas Dolby’s still hyperactive 10 years on, an album track that should been a single enters for Elton & kd, and just to frighten the children 2 consecutive Mariah Carey ballads in the Top 40 and Garth Brooks as a new entry.

30th JAN 1994

A new number one for the 5th week in a row this month, Enigma getting their 2nd and doing it in 2 weeks. I even bought the album rather than the single, for a change. Aretha gets her first Top 10 in a few years, and a total of 26 years of ‘em (yes even 20 years we were talking decades of my charts!), while Ruby Turner tackles that massive 60’s soul ballad Stay With Me Baby: few can do it successfully and nobody beats the sheer mania of Lorraine Ellison’s original. One of the crimes of pop that it’s never charted while covers of it have, and it’s a vocal performance that needs to be heard to be believed.

Highest new entry is that delicious Linger, The Cranberries sadly decided to swap gentleness for shrieking after this single and became one of my pet annoyances of the 90’s. The Orb slide in, Womack and Womack sneak in under an alias that didn’t fool me, and Paul Rodgers was still alright now 23 years after Free debuted. Sadly, as if a Mariah Carey cover of a classic ballad wasn’t punishment enough, Celine Dion does it too, and I wouldn’t bet on the chances of either of them challenging the chart positions of the originals (in my charts, of course, for some reason record buyers loved them).

6th FEB 1994

In from nowhere, knocking a World Music track off the top…another World Music track! Deep Forest was one of those Tree-hugging Sting-promoting type records to help save the Rainforests that were subject to ridicule by powerful vested-interest newspapers and crap comics. Or, as I prefer to think of them, selfish morons who think it’s hilarious that the planets lungs are being systematically decimated and untold species wiped-out. Real belly-laughs there, then. The rate of the Amazon loss might have slowed recently, but it’s still going on and 20 years later it’s frightening how much has been lost. The record? It’s beautiful.

A big soul climber for Joe Roberts, to 3, The Cranberries gentle guitar pop to 9, and The Orb’s New Age-ish sounds to 10. Cathy Dennis gets back with D Mob for a final fling at the charts, pretty much before switching to song writing and mega-success. Oh and another New Age record at 23, I think I was getting my Second-Wind as Hippie-by-inclination (too young to be one at the time)…

Significant Top 40 entries for Red Hot Chili Peppers and pop-wise Ace Of Base, and while Mariah was warbling her torturous cover up the charts, the Nilsson version was topping my play list along with Nancy Sinatra’s Greatest Hits and It Never Rains In Southern California (Albert Hammond). Happily, Saint Etienne, Kate Bush, The Charlatans and Crowded House shone a bit of minor light lower down from the pompous big international diva chart hits middling it up in my charts for a few weeks, largely due to the songs rather than the quality of the records.

13th FEB 1994

Another new entry at the top for the second week in a row - this time it’s 1972 classic Without You in it’s definitive version, the heart-breaking vocal by Nilsson. It had peaked at 2 first time round, and Top 10 again in 1976, this time with the recent death of Harry Nilsson (a great singer) and the comparison of UK chart number 1 (Mariah Carey) justice prevails in my chart-world.

In at 7 from nowhere, Texas do a dramatic ballad, and it’s fab. I love Sharleen when she gets all soulful. A big leap for Saint Etienne into the Top 20, ditto Womack and Womack aka House Of Zakkarius. Meanwhile The Proclaimers want to get married and go Top 40, along with a good new entry from Level 42. Occasionally great, they were well out of fashion by 1994, unfairly I thought, as they were pretty good as their career dipped out and away. In the play list world of oldies, I was mad on Talk Of The USA all over again (Middle Of The Road non-hit from 1973), loving the classy gentle instrumental theme by Henry Mancini to gentle classy quirky US sitcom Newhart, and Love Train by the O’Jays (obviously reviewing 1973 charts that week!).

20th FEB 1994

2 weeks for Nilsson, while other oldies joining the chartparty are Joan Jett (from 1982), and Frankie Goes To Hollywood (via remix and a third in a row from 1984 to chart). New Kids On The Block get all grown up, and release an actual decent pop record under their initials. Sadly, 10-year-old girls didn’t like the change, and more serious fans couldn’t face grudgingly admitting it was OK, so that, more or less, was them done for. Sting returns with another jazz-flavoured ballad. 20 years on, I still have ambitions for Sting to release an actual exciting record again, and I’d already harboured those ambitions for 10 years in 1994.

With an actual exciting pop rock record, meanwhile, The Wildhearts Bomb into my Top 40. Always under-rated they were, possibly as they were rather manic and fun for serious musos whom presume dour means meaningful, and intense equals passion, and fun is just bubblegum. Pah! Suede also return, much-loved by their generation of fans, and sometimes loved by me. Several future number ones from the band and ex-members are forecast, but here a minor entry (so far).

27th FEB 1994

3 weeks for Nilsson at 1, 1 week for another Nilsson at 75 - Josefin. Abba's Bjorn and Benny, basically. The charts go mad with new entries, lots of them pretty good: Morrissey with one of his best, Beck grunge-shuffling his way to declare he's a Loser. Know how he feels. Springsteen with the fab movie theme; Whatta Man, En Vogue & Salt n Pepa declaring the start of that modern curse: urban superstar duets. Thanks Gals!

Meanwhile Nat & eartha enter with records not necessarily well-known, but plugged via adverts. Also a modern phenomenon, but one I'm more in favour of! Ace Of Base finally get cracking into the Top 10; Cocteau's are cool at 40; Jimmy Cliff, reggae legend, does a film-related of the very under-rated non-reggae legend Johnny Nash, US Sam Cooke soundalike who was the first ever reggae breakthrough act in the UK and the US. He wrote I Can See Clearly Now, and covered Bob Marley 3 years before his breakthrough. Should be well-known!

6th March 1994

4 weeks for Nilsson, presiding over a very volatile chart, much like the singles chart, and very indie-looking suddenly, also much like the UK singles chart. Ace Of Base get their second Top 3 single, Level 42 get their first (and last) Top 5. In at 8, 1986 classic ballad Wonderful Life, fabulous song, and then suddenly a host of huge jumpers: Carter with their glam-trib song at 9, Inspiral Carpets (helped by Mark E Smith of The Fall) rocket from 72 to 15, and Morrissey is back on form and shoots from 58 to 17.

Some golden oldies enter too, Elvis Costello sulking at 22, Alison Moyet whispers at 24 with her best Lightning-Seed-tastic single, while Boy George swears he misses us blind at 27, a remix of Culture Club’s brilliant 1983 album track. Jimmy Cliff takes Johnny Nash’s Clearly Now up to 20, Smashing Pumpkins enter at 38, Suede go Top 40 just ahead of Beck, for a right ol’ indie rock delight.

Guns’ n Roses cover a 50’s classic (album track), joining 50’s acts Eartha Kitt and Nat ‘King’ Cole in the chart, (advert related), while there’s also a delightful dance new entry - no not Doop. Not Cappella. Both are fine, but Jam ‘n’ Spoon was the main one at a lowly 70.

13th March 1994

5 weeks for Nilsson, heading for the all-time chart points Top 20 by this stage. Black do what they should have done first-time round and go up to 4. In at 5, from nowhere, though it’s the best Rolling Stones record in 20 years. Err I mean it’s Primal Scream getting their Rocks off. Alison meanwhile gets her first Top 10 in 7 years. The Inspiral Carpets get another Top 10 hit, and it’s only fair they bring Mark E Smith along, as he never had a big hit with The Fall, though lots of minor ones.

Just hanging around waiting for a gap, Morrissey and Beck, while it’s a 50-place climb for Cappella with one of their best singles. It’s classic Bruce at 30, and classic urban dance with En Vogue & Salt ‘n’ Pepa battling over Whatta Man at 39. Less classic, but theyve Got 2 got 2 move it, Reel 2 Real in at 37. It’s lower down that the real goodies drop by though, Velvet Underground creep in with the jangly haunting Venus In Furs, Prince has a last gasp (for a decade) as he goes insane and decides Prince isn’t a good enough name - and kills his career stone dead after this last great ballad, Blur go all Pet Shop Boys-ey with the career-changing Girls & Boys, while welcome returns from Beautiful South, Roxette, Tom Petty (17 years of chart entries)....

20th March 1994

Ace Of Base finally get that number one, an American chart-topper too with their catchy pop grower. I always was partial to Scandipop, as I believe they call it now. Runner-up is Alison Moyet, just leap-frogging Primal Scream. The whole Top 10, though, is a bit of a classic list, and if I may say so myself, incredibly varied musically. Morrissey gets a rare solo Top 10, while a Springsteen classic ballad from Philadelphia starts to pick up speed, and gives him 19 years of Top 20 hits. Add in slacker-rock from Beck, and 40’s retro from Nat for a bit of a Top 10 clear-out.

Nearly there, D:Ream’s 1993 Number one gets a remix return at 11, Tori Amos has a Pretty Good Year entering at 14 and Blur rocket up to 19, and Prince up to 39. Keeping up with the 1993 returns, Daryl Hall and Toni Braxton have a second go, while Madonna slides in with a very orthodox ballad for her, at 40. I’ve said it before, but a good gag is worth repeating until someone laughs, in at 68 is Ce Ce Peniston, a lady very thankful for those three letters of the alphabet, T, N and O.

27th March 1994

Alison Moyet gets her only solo chart-topper, and her first since Yazoo did it in 1982 with Only You. Lightning Seeds-like melody-heavy, it’s an insistent dance grower and should have done better than UK 18. D:Ream get to 2, the remix not as good as the original mix, but again, what a melody, and fresh even 12 months on.

High new entries, both following-up Number Ones, and both from great albums, and both (sticking with the melody theme) having subtle killer toons, two of their best in both cases (in a very long list of greats). So, which will get to the top....?!

Dance suddenly makes inroads with Culture Beat shooting to 10, Cappella to 12, and another version of the Detroit Spinners classic from World’s Apart (aka Brother Beyond’s Nathan) at 22. The Wonder Stuff at 26, James at 63 for indie newies, reggae from UB40, 14 years of hits and counting at 38, and Bitty Mclean’s version of the 50’s oldie (and Mama’s & Papa’s 1967 classic version) at 55. a-ha 51, Bjork 75, among others to finish off the name-checks.

3rd April 1994

2 weeks on top for Alison Moyet, keeping off the Bee Gees from the top, with Pet Shop Boys up to 5, both with gorgeous ballads, two of the loveliest releases in their careers in both cases. Meanwhile, Springsteen pops back in the Top 10 with one of his greatest ballads, and Tori Amos does the same with her best, and Jimmy Cliff takes Johnny Nash’s I Can See Clearly back into the top 10 22 years on (and 5 years on from the last time it was in there).

Highest new entry, The Proclaimers know What Makes You Cry at 15, and Madonna remembers at 16, presumably not the Coasters 1950’s re-issue at 26 though, as she’s the same age as me, and FAR too young to recall the fifties. At 33? Mmmmm. Or 4 times that, as the impressively deep-voiced Crash Test Dummies get a welcome quirky ballad into the charts. It’s sort of more folk than rock, whereas Pink Floyd at 35 is more Prog than rock, and Pulp at 65 more Britpop than rock trying to remember the first time. A low-key arrival for one of the great 90’s bands there.

10th April 1994

The Bee Gees get 3 in a row chart-toppers, consistency they never had at any chart period in their career previously, though apart from 7 number ones to date they also had 2 written for Yvonne Elliman, and at least 6 number 2’s including the very first John Chart in 1968. Madonna gets another Top 10, though during a period for her when she failed to go top 10 as often as she went top 10. Blur return to the top 10 with the fab Girls And Boys, kick-starting their classic period.

Top 20 for Prince, after crawling up slowly, to join the many ballads in the upper echelons, while Tony Di Bart brings his huge dance hit in at 17, the highest new entry. A sudden leap from a-ha to 20, 9 years on and still going strong, and 60’s goodie Sweets For My Sweet gets the reggae treatment from CJ Lewis at 24, while Bitty McLean is at 27 with 50’s classic Dedicated To The One I Love, also reggae-fied. Fun enough, though neither are as good as previous hit versions.

Hung Up and Always go Top 40. Madonna is 7, Bon Jovi 37 - but these songs aren’t their famous hits, they are new entries from Paul Weller and Erasure. I need youtube reminders, though I recall Erasure being a goodie. Other than that there’s a major classic entering in the 70’s. Not Take That’s huge hit, no, it’s The Pretenders brilliant I’ll Stand By You. So good even a pedestrian version by Girls Aloud went to number one over a decade later.

17th April 1994

2 weeks for the Bee Gees holding off Pet Shop Boys from the top, and Brooce hits 4, his highest chart position to date. Crash Test Dummies bring their quirky Canadian folkrock up to 7. Mmmmmmm folkalicious! Erasure’s sweet Always shoots to 12, and Terrorvision are the highest new entry at 25 - Oblivion! Good name for a rollercoaster that...

Kate’s up to 27, keeping her Top 40 run going with one of her less commercial singles, Taylor Dayne’s back 7 years on from her debut Top 40 hit at 34, and The Pretenders extend their run of new hits in the 40 to 15 years. Others: Bob Geldof is Crazy at 52, 17 years on from the Boomtown Rats debut; Frank Sinatra’s My Way just won’t go away 25 years on from starting it’s looooong run. I don’t see it charting again though; Celine Dion has been misled. When I was 12 I was sure it was a verb, not a noun. I misle, you misle, we misle and I have been misled (pronounced My-Zelled). I read a lot more words than people used in conversation in those days. I wish Celine had pronounced it My-Selled, allowing for the accent; and lastly Tina Turner is back with her cover of her cover with Ike of Creedence’s 1969 Top 10.

24th April 1994

3 weeks on top for the Bee Gees, and 3 in an uncharacteristically subordinate role for Pet Shop Boys. At 3 The Proclaimers hitting their highest chart placing with a minor hit, and after 3 previous Top 10 hits. Erasure get yet another Top 10 hit, 8 years of Will-they-won’t-they make the Top 10 - 2 number ones and many big hits, but just as many minor hits too. I liked this one a lot though.

The Pretenders shoot up to 11, and quite right too! Terrorvision go top 20, not for the last time, and Marvin Gaye’s back. Well, sort of - it’s an unreleased track which was pepped up and sounded great, in at 19 for 25 years of “new” hits. Richard Marx is back at 36, one of those variable artists, sometimes classic number one quality (Hazard), sometimes not...

1st May 1994

After 3 weeks at 2, Pet Shop Boys finally overhaul the Bee Gees with the gorgeous Liberation, 4th Number One in a row from Very. I saw a 3D version of the video at the much-hated IMAX building in Bournemouth (years later), which was pretty amazing - if you've never seen it check it out, awesome. Up to 4, The Pretenders most-touching ballad, a truly great record and sentiment. Prince getting to 6, and then it’s all about a deluge of new entries headed by 2 world music follow-ups, Deep Forest at 12 and Enigma at 13, sounding much like the previous ones, but still good.

Other genres? Dance at 17 from Gloworm, slacker-rock from Red Hot Chili Peppers at 25 (the revered Under The Bridge), jazz funk from Level 42 at 24, big ballad from the always-there Wet Wet Wet cover of the Troggs great original at 35. As opposed to grate. MOR from la Streisand at 59 (Lloyd-webber, I think), Blur kick-starting Britpop proper with album track Parklife popping in at 61, and what a classic it is, still fresh. Eternal, as opposed to the group who somehow slide in at 65.

8th May 1994

Back up at 1 for a 4th and final week, the Bee Gees, with Enigma getting to 2 trying for a 3rd Number One. Straight in is classic 80‘s oldie, Grace Jones Slave To The Rhythm going Top 10 for the second time (1985 being the first). New act Nick Green never got any further in any chart other than Top 10 in my chart, which is basically James Blunt/Nick Drake vocally and it’s sweeping strings-tastic. Writes music for TV shows now I think. Highest new entry proper is Judy Cheeks at 12, a bit of gospel diva dance. Great singer.

Phil Collins suddenly jumps to 13 with a pleasant ballad, Crystal Waters gets a second Top 20 hit, and TV advert theme tune Inside from grunge-rock act Stiltskin shoot in at 23. Those riffs were fantastic. Eurovision time? That’ll be Frances Ruffelle at 28 then, one of the UK’s best 90’s entries. Classic oldie Listen To The Music is back 20 years on, remixed of course at 29 as per recent Doobies hits. Baby I Love Your way is back for the third time - reggae this time, and probably the best cover of it since Peter Frampton’s original 1976 hit.

Jah Wobble, of Public Image Limited fame, is at 22 with indie-reaggae and featuring vocalist Anneli Drecker, who charted last year with a great oldie in my charts from a few years back. Jon Secada’s back, The Lemonheads are back with a big gay (country) heart at 39 and some lyrics not radio-friendly, and Elvis Costello is never far away from my charts, here at 49 steppin up.

15th May 1994

Third number one for Enigma, and second in a row from the same album, keeping off The Pretenders from the top spot - in retrospect they are the wrong way round, I much prefer I’ll Stand By You these days! The Doobie Brothers finally go top 10 with Listen To The Music after almost doing it in 1974 (but the original version is the best, regardless). Grunge and passionate gospeldance meanwhile go top 10, courtesy of Stiltskin and Gloworm, both terrific tracks.

Jon Secada gets another Top 20 2 years after his debut number 2 hit, and Phyllis Nelson’s 1985 smooth soul oldie comes back at 21. More surprisingly Red Hot Chili Peppers go top 20 and Wet Wet Wet don’t. I’ll take that as right... Sudden spurts after ottering about a bit for veterans Pink Floyd and Elton John (with Marcella Detroit), both into the 40, and Parklife re-enters at 36 now out as a single. Nilsson’s classic Without You is joined by his classic Everybody’s Talking, albeit courtesy The Beautiful South who do a lovely version. Let’s be clear though, the Nilsson versions of songs are always the definitive versions, the man was a great.

Outside the 40, and a great reggae big hit for Dawn Penn pops in at 49, a cover of Summer n Streisand hits 52 by 2 current dance divas, and Neneh Cherry is back 5 years on with Youssou N’Dour, also 5 years since his debut, and the absolutely classic and haunting Seven Seconds. Just brilliant.
