I want a top 10 of ASIB and Joanne tracks tbh. Grigio Girls for Gaga's most underrated ballad and Is That Alright? to win for me ~
Aw I missed this. Hope The Fame tracks don't come dead last.
You and I top 5 at LEAST please!
The first track in line might actually start this countdown, or at least I hope so
19. Again Again // 4.75
First out it's one of Gaga's earliest songs ever written. A version of the song was released on the Canadian edition of The Fame, and as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of The Fame Monster. Gaga played the song multiple times in New York, in 2006, when she was first starting out as an artist and it has that raspy sound to the vocals and instrumental. Not her most signature or memorable song, it favoured very poorly here and is officially Buzzjack's least rated Gaga ballad. Oop-
Oh surprise it wasn't Brown Eyes!
Again Again takes me back to pre-megastar Gaga It's cute but obviously not one of her better ballads!
I think it's probably less well-known than Brown Eyes which is why it's come below it. It is one of her weakest ever songs for me so i'm not complaining at it taking home the wooden spoon :')
What exactly do people not like about The Fame ballads? I've never been able fathom it.
That all makes sense, if we're comparing them to her other ballads then I get why they might be considered weaker. I've just never understood how people actively dislike them. They sound just fine among the other songs on The Fame, they're sung well and have character.
To me, the whole The Fame album is just a preview of her and a sign of things to come. She is nowhere near her potential there apart from 3-4 smash hits.
18. Come to Mama // 5.36
Quite a big jump up from the last one, but still a fairly poor average, we move from one of her earliest songs to one of her much more recent ones. The song is about people loving one another, and, how in troubled times, love can help people overcome hardships. It looks to the future, is twee and dainty and an overall 'nice' song.. which doesn't seem to cut it in this rate!
I find Come to Mama fairly unlistenable Glad it's out ~
'Come to Mama' was a Joanne highlight for me and another I was sad to see it receive so much hate. I love 'Hey Girl' too and I'm sure that'll be out soon.
Yeah, I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I've listened to CTM
Dope and Hey Girl deserved to go before Come To Mama
17. Brown Eyes // 5.55
Returning to The Fame now, this time for Brown Eyes. A real stand out from the debut, simply because it slows proceedings right down and is a complete contrast of pace. The song was interestingly recorded in one take (after "a lot of red wine and crying"). It is a heartfelt song, but is fairly simple and repetitive with throwaway lyrics of a lost love. Not her biggest moment and it's lost here ~
Come to Mama is definitely Gaga's worse ballads but not THAT bad.
Brown Eyes is pretty awful, should've been last tbh.
Another just okay ballad in Brown Eyes!
I love Brown Eyes
16. Dope // 5.95
A ballad in every sense of the word. Slow, lyrically painful, heartbroken emotion throughout, loss, death, hurt, sins. 'Dope' is the only song on its parent album that slows down proceedings and for that reason it stands out in it as being a huge contrast and change of pace. It was released as the second promotional single from the album, and it tells of how, following her hip surgery and cancellation of the Born This Way Ball tour, Gaga became addicted to drugs, which helped her get relief from the pain of surgery. It's the most autobiographical song on its album, but its dark nature has fallen short here (perhaps quite surprisingly?).
One of the very few who actually likes Dope! Sad to see it not even making the top 15
I do like Dope! I was perhaps a bit too harsh on it with my score of 6 oops. But compared to what comes after this era... it did have to lose a point or two in comparison to those.
you and i / shallow are my 2 favourites. I can't decide
I kinda like Dope, but it depends on the on the mood I am!
15. Hey Girl // 6.55
Featuring Florence Welch, Hey Girl is the only collaboration on Joanne. The song is an interesting ballad in that it plays as a conversation between the two women, and is intended to be so - Gaga wants women to talk and converse and sing the song to each other as they discuss their issues. A song about loneliness and overcoming this through friendship and finding strength in peers.
Noooooooooo HG is super cute
I love Florence and Stan Gaga
Just not together
I used to find Hey Girl really meh but it did grow on me over time. I don't return to it much but it's a nice enough listen when I do!
I value the fact that it's a really well thought out collaboration though and she's not just doing it for the sake of it.
Not gonna lie, when I first heard we were getting a Gaga/Florence collab I was OVER the moon/insanely excited...but then I listened and just meh. Its certainly grown on me over time but it's nowhere near where it should be in terms of quality.
Well it's basically a Bennie and the Jets ripoff but I love the message and bridge
14. Music To My Eyes // 6.64
The first ballad to fall out from the ASIB soundtrack, Music to My Eyes features Bradley and the duet tells of how connected people are through music. It uses metaphors of music to express the love and devotion between the two characters and is a laid-back tune that perfectly merges the vocals of the two singers. It is majorly overshadowed by the bigger moments on the album however!
I very often skip MTME tbh
Lovely song which I find slightly underrated!
13. Til It Happens To You // 7.00
Co-written with Diane Warren for the 2015 documentary film The Hunting Ground, Til It Happens To You deals with campus rape in the United States. Very important subject matter, the song deals with issues of grief and pain and how to struggle through it. Very impactful and powerful, it is more of a statement than a fully fledged song which may explain its placing here. Still, her mighty voice and prowess shines through the dark, sorrowful lyrics and offers a message of strength and powering through.
Love Til It Happens! Such an emotional song
Not one of her better ballads but it's nice and it's for a great cause
Love TIHY although rarely listen to it. But it has 24M listens on Spotify which is a good album track amount for her.
A bit of a shock coming next... predictions?
Speechless?? You and I??
12. Yoü And I // 7.11
A bit of a shock now - we lose the 2nd biggest selling song in this countdown! The 4th single taken from Born This Way, this was a fan favourite in the early days of the album's release. Performed multiple times and a top 20 hit, it acts as an ode, a tribute to her lovers and more importantly her fans. The song features Brian May, is Grammy Award nominated and had multiple live performances (including the VMAs). But as a ballad, it doesn't seem to do it for you as it shockingly misses the top 10! Are there just many other more exceptional singles, or have we just done this single the dirty? Yoü decide~
Oh 'You And I' deserved so much better I was a huge fan of it back in the day, the song flew to #1 in my chart and I was obsessed with the music video/VMAs performance/the Gaga and Jo Calderone thing. It is also the only song I've ever publicly sang on karaoke one of many strong moments on 'Born This Way'.
It's one of her personal faves I think! The video is gorgeous, but I'm not TOO keen on the song (meaning it's not 10/10).
It's not my favourite single of hers but I think we've been too harsh here and it deserves to be at least 5 or so places higher. The video is nice.. even if it is loads of ideas from different projects thrown together. I love how much the song means to her and the response it used to have when performed live; a real stadium anthem!
I am SULKING. No longer wanna be an artist mod tbh. Delete my BJ account actually!!
!!!
You and I deserved better
It's just a badass song The video is nuts and some of her performances of it (HELLO that ridiculously OTT Jonathan Ross where she performs in a barn) are just brilliant.
11. Before I Cry // 7.23
Just missing out on the top 10, is a song that features on the soundtrack (but not film version) of A Star Is Born. Before I Cry is a beautiful ballad about love and loss and longing for more in a relationship. It doesn't feature in the actual film but on the soundtrack it slots in perfectly, blending the melancholic mood of the film and the stunning love story that unfolds throughout the album. It's done very well here for one of her lesser known songs!
Stunning song
BIC is great! Didn't realise we are already on the verge of top ten, some Joanne smashes to come!
This TEASE for the top 10 results
Before I Cry is dated and her worst song on the soundtrack.
Yoü and I was nothing more than a terrible Shania Twain/Queen pastiche and highly skippable — it helped kill most momentum for that campaign outside of the US, too. Oop.
10. Angel Down // 7.23
And we're into the top 10! We go to Joanne now and a song that is both haunting and damning. It closes the album and was inspired by the death of Trayvon Martin, who was shot dead by George Zimmerman in 2012. A work tape version is included on the deluxe edition of the album and even without the electronic production it still offers a punching tribute and ode to lives lost to gun crime. A very important song and worthy start to the top 10.
Yes, love AD. She should comment important events in society more often in her songs.
Ah Gaga The Rapper right around the corner then, driving her Mini Cooper and feeling super duper
'Angel Down' isn't one of my faves. I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I've listened to it tbh
The top 5 I hope:
5th - Speechless
4th - Million Reasons
3rd - I'll Never Love Again
2nd - Always Remember Us This Way
Winner - Shallow
09. I Don't Know What Love Is // 7.35
A ballad in every sense of the word - quaint, heart-felt, beautiful and melodic. I Don't Know What Love Is is the wedding song we need. It is contemplative and melancholic with a sense of loss and yearning throughout. Beautifully sung, with some of the softest vocals Gaga has ever delivered it is one of many shining ballads taken from A Star is Born. As she compares love to the things around her, you get a real sense of how confusing love can be.
A stunner of a song
Angel Down is a bit high on here for me.
A few songs that went before it I’d say are better.
I appreciate the subject matter of the song but I very rarely go back to it.
IDKWLI has stunning vocals but the composition is a bit underwhelming, although it is meant to be a "simple song" but it could do with a twist or two.
08. Grigio Girls // 7.45
A bit of a shock here given it's a bonus track on Joanne, but Grigio Girls has matured like a fine wine and done incredibly well here. One of the most autobiographical songs Gaga has done, this one is about sisterhood, friendship and remaining song with your loved ones around you. In her own words: "One of my friends has stage four breast cancer and there is a song which touches on that relationship on the album but its also quite a fun song. All the different things going on in my life bring me back to the people I love and that can heal you at any moment." Dedicated to Sonja, it teaches you to be strong in numbers and that crying is perfectly fine. A true beauty.
I am personally in LOVE with this song and think it's incredible... but colour me shocked here I did not expect this to get as high as it has but I am so happy for it!
A song that means SO SO much to her, but also has the power to mean so much to others too. What a true gem of a song.
I am so proud of us doing this song WELL and getting it as high as 7 here!
GRIGIO GIRLS!!!! LOVE IT!!! What an anthem of friendship!!
Grigio Girls is lovely but I’d definitely put I Don’t Know What Love Is ahead of it.
Gorgeous song and I get emotional EVERY time I listen to it! Shocked it's #08 but I'm certainly not complaining
It got what it deserved!
Should be top 5 tbh
Gonna go with Speechless next? I don't think it'll be top 5 like I want it to be
07. Speechless // 7.75
Taken from The Fame Monster, and exploring the fear of death, this song was written by Gaga to convince her father to under-go open-heart surgery whilst also offering a reminder to respect and value parents and loved ones. As a result of this, it's obviously a very personal song to Gaga and this was also shown in the amount of live performances she did for it (including the Grammys and VMAs). A Queen-inspired rock ballad it really stands out on the album as being a complete change of pace, but yet it works perfectly within it.
Nooooo :/
Stunner of a song
All remaining songs are fab though.
Knew it Deserves top 5 at least!
'Speechless' is absolutely stunning both lyrically and vocally. I agree that it deserved top 5!
Speechless is lovely and a Gaga album track I still listen to regularly.
I have a feeling Joanne or Million Reasons could be next to go.
Definitely think it’s gonna be a A Star Is Born top 3.
06. Joanne // 8.14
Just missing the top 5 - it's Joanne. The title single from Gaga's latest solo studio album, it was given a more acoustic reworking for its single release. The piano version was released as the album's third and final single and it won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. It was inspired by Gaga's late aunt, Joanne Germanotta, and became a focal point for the musical direction of the album. Gaga intended the song to have a healing effect for those dealing with loss and pain and it certainly does as it centres on death and the heartache of loss.
Love Joanne!! Stunning!
05. Is That Alright? // 8.45
We begin the top 5 with another track from ASIB - the film's closing credit number and, for me at least, one of the greatest songs Gaga has ever put her name to. It is about growing old with a loved one and wishing they were there as you die - dark, damning but delivered with such beauty and emotion it is near impossible to not feel a waterfall of emotion as she sings it. Ally paints a picture of her relationship with Jackson and her imperfections, all packaged within a perfect song.
TOO LOW.
I think as time goes on, this is maturing into a top 5 all-time Gaga song for me. Maybe even top 3. Utter perfection.
Yeah it's a delight
Top 4 prediction:
04. Million Reasons
03. I'll Never Love Again
02. Always Remember Us This Way
01. Shallow
Joanne is lush.
The fact it won a Grammy too is such a fun fact too!
Is that Alright is gorgeous too.
I’d have loved it to have charted during the time the film was released.
I would've switched ITA and Joanne, but the former is brilliant too!
Hope Million Reasons wins
04. Million Reasons // 8.5
We return to Joanne for the final time now, with a single that reignited commercial success for Gaga in the US. This was largely due to the Superbowl performance, but also in the fact that it was so wildly different from everything we'd had from Gaga up until that point. It was at that point her slowest, most subdued single and because of this it stood out. It is about heartbreak and hope, but also religion and something greater offering positivity in life. It received a nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards and became a top 10 hit in the US.
BLAH I was hoping MR could be at least top 3.
The top 3 is amazing though so not complaining BUT...
I love MR so much, she delivered several iconic performances too (SB, Victoria's Secret etc)
The top six does prove my point about Joanne being the turning point for Gaga ballads — all deserved.
'Million Reasons' deserves #04 - such a powerhouse of a song and she sounds absolutely amazing on it
The top 3 are the rightful top 3 imo
03. I'll Never Love Again // 8.79
Receiving a limited release as the album's 3rd single, I'll Never Love Again is the climax of the film. It represents Ally's loss and her ability to refuse everyone that enters her life forevermore. It is a heartbreaking, soul-crashing number with stunning vocals, pure emotion and sheer passion. The soundtrack contains both the film version and an extended version and both tell the final chapter of Ally's story. It was written in the aftermath of her best friend Sonja's death and it was this moment that led to the pain you hear in her vocals throughout the song. A tragic moment of Gaga's life led to this masterpiece.
One of her very best. It's heartbreaking listening to it now we know that she filmed the final scene for ASIB right after Sonja died but it's still a song I'm regularly returning to
Aahh so good! Love it in the film, however haven't listened to this much recently.
I love I’ll Never Love Again vocally it’s her best vocal shes recorded in my opinion.
The Gaga solos from A Star Is Born soundtrack are all amongst her absolute very very best.
I’m predicting a Shallow win now although it could be close.
TOP 2 revealed later!
I'm here for a shock Always Remember win but I really don't care who does it considering that and Shallow are both 11/10 songs
02. Always Remember Us This Way // 9.71
Receiving a limited release as the second single, falls in second place here. Always Remember Us This Way comes from the living embodiment of Gaga as Ally. It is to Ally what 'Maybe It's Time' is to Jackson - a beautiful heartfelt moment of loss, life and memory. The song is played to roaring crowds in the film as the songstress realises her talent and fame and it transcends just as well in studio form. Here the song reaches a respectable second place. So what has overtaken it to the crown?
What a song, what an average score, what a ballad. <3
9.71 Brilliant and SO well deserved. One of her best ever for me.
01. Shallow // 10.0
That perfect 10 *.*!
Was there ever any doubt as to what the forum's favourite Gaga ballad is? Not only is it by far reaches her biggest selling ballad to date, it's also now one of her biggest ever singles, period. It continues to dominate charts and airways globally and has truly become a song of the decade. Shallow is anything but - it is deep, meaningful and filled to the brim with pure emotion and love. The song is about finding yourself at peace in the darkest and scariest moments. It is about the fear that you can possess in pivotal moments in life and how you react to these. It is about love, freedom, life and pain. All-in-all, Shallow is one of the greatest songs recorded by Gaga and it's with no doubt that we crown it Buzzjack's favourite Gaga ballad.
Such a special song. So iconic. One of her signature hits which will be remembered and covered for many years to come.
Thanks for sorting this, lovely. You've done a brill job

"I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in
I'll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface where they can't hurt us
We're far from the shallow now"
One of her best song and ICONIC classic already
I love Always... too, it's a perfect song! My friend played it on piano at her bachelor party with lyrics dedicated her future husband. Such a beautiful composition and will be iconic too.
The perfect winner! It's been a dream as a fan to see Gaga's star shining brighter than ever 10 years in, thanks to 'Shallow' / ASIB. So excited to see what she does next!
Thanks for this, Bal. <3
Yes thanks for doing this! Very insightful although predictable that ASIB would sweep the top 2 at least.

People maybe think that You and I is too "slow", it has almost everything from the 80s guitar ballad vibe to country flavours but it somehow fails to reach the potential? I dunno! I love the lyrics but as a whole the song just doesn't do it to me.
According to the score the top 2 was in a league on their own here Gaga has really stepped up with her ballads
