BuzzJack Music Forum _ Sports and Fitness _ Steven Gerrard named as Rangers manager

Posted by: Mack. 4th May 2018, 04:58 PM

As I'm sure you will have heard, ex-Liverpool player Steven Gerrard has been named as Rangers manager.

How do you think he'll get on?

I'm getting vibes of John Barnes from when he went to Celtic.

It will be then next season a Rodgers v Gerrard in the Old Firm derby.

Good opportunity for him but pity it has to be an awful club like Rangers!!

Good luck to him, I think he'll struggle as he lacks experience and Rangers can't compete with Celtic on a financial level. I guess he probably has better contacts in the game though.

He wants to manage Liverpool after Klopp goes so this is the perfect opportunity really. It's a poor league, but the club has a massive following and expects to win so it's the perfect experience. Guess we'll see if it works out or not, but sure to be a lot of interest in Rangers now.

I think it's a very good move for him. A big, big job in some aspects with the history & culture of an iconic club & let's be honest no one is expecting anyone to come close to Celtic for many years yet so I don't think it'll be a disaster if Rangers again finish some way off despite what the naysayers would have you believe.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how he gets on. Good luck to him. It's a challenge although if he gets off to a bad start he will learn quickly the pressure that comes with being a Rangers or Celtic manager.

The SPL is a one team league effectively so if he was able to get 2nd place with Rangers then that would be a good achievement. Personally I've never seen the appeal of the Scottish league, even when Rangers were stable it always just came down to them and Celtic. I have never heard of anyone apart from those two clubs winning the Scottish league since I've been following football.

Not sure a 5 year old club has much history?

Feels a little bizarre to appoint someone so inexperienced to a job with such high expectations. Rangers fans aren’t happy to be second. They want to win and anything less is unacceptable. They don’t have the money for players, Gerard has never developed players or a squad. Baffling decision by both parties. It almost feels like Rangers board are writing the next couple of years off in the name of financial stability before they have the ability to compete on and off the pitch.

It’s historically just a 2 team league. Complete Diddy league. The only time since the founding of the SFL that both teams have been shut out for three consecutive seasons was 82-83 Dundee United, 83-84 & 84-85 Aberdeen. Otherwise it’s a maximum of two consecutive years and only 18 times since 1890 has a team other than those two won it. Complete waste of time and money for a pair of teams that’d struggle in the championship

Expect Celtic to win the next three league titles probably.
