BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Streaming and the UK top 40 Chart

Posted by: steve201 8th September 2014, 09:36 PM

Just thought I'd open a general discussion about the effects of streaming on the chart. It's only been in place for 2 months but already the chart is starting to look differently/song are behaving in different ways.

This can also be seen in the way artists are releasing tracks as can be seen by Calvin Harris this week.

I think the powers that be have been very smart in the addition of streaming to the sales chart. They have created a situation whereby releasing a single after 8 weeks of held back preorders no longer gaurantees a No1 single and releases in future will change as artists/record companies cope with this and releases could mirror Calvins or other releases strategies may well develop.

What does everyone else think?

Hopefully record companies will realise that to maximise chart positions, you need to release a song for streaming at least 2 weeks before download, as it generally takes that long for streaming to build up to significant levels.

So what if that means you chart for several weeks at very low positions - that's not usually at the expense of download sales.

Precisely!!! It worked for Nico & Vinz and it will definitely work with Meghan Trainor, by the time her single releases in October. It's such a shame that Taylor Swift's Shake It Off was not available on Spotify upon release and it's still not there now!!! She could have made Top 2 in her OA/OS week and may have been the surprise number 1 the following week.

Yeah it was a good way of FORCING earlier releases by the powers that be.

I think Taylor doesnt like streaming which is why she isnt on it!

Yeah there are still songs being held back over here after being about in the US for ages which are also not streaming like Bang Bang and then there's also the new Eminem/Sia song and Nicki Minaj's, hate to say this but people who really want these songs will have got them by other means. I remember last year the Avril Lavigne song "Here's To Never Growing Up", that took forever to get released over here, it wasn't even out when she appeared on BGT and The Voice performing it

I think Sia's Chandelier is an example of a track that's probably gotten an extended lease on life due to streaming - it peaked at a somewhat weak #6 (not bad as such, but considering the hits she's penned in the past few years you'd expect a bit more), but due to it being big on streaming you get the impression that it might've kept radio stations and such playing it while normally they probably would've dumped it by now. I doubt it would've survived ten weeks in the top 30 without streaming helping it along and kept the interest in the track.

Yes, 'Chandelier' has absolutely been helped by streaming. I think without streaming it wouldn't have probably had 5-6 weeks in the Top 40.

People have complained that streaming makes chart more dull.. it could be true if you think of amount of songs reaching top 40. But it also keeps songs which interest only artist's own fanbase from charting longer. If Nicole Scherzinger releases something very mediocre, she can have her top 10/15 position but we know pretty soon if the song is popular enough to hang around. Songs that benefit from streaming are bona fide hits such as Chandelier.

Exactly so it basically prevents or shortens the chart span of non hits!

Sia's Chandelier is now 18 in the midweeks and 34 on iTunes last I checked.

A perfect example of something becoming a way bigger hit than it was probably going to be thanks to streaming. It'll be interesting to see where it ends up in the New Years chart.

I'd love OCC to change the streaming rule to 300 streams = 1 sale. 200 at least. There's too much Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith around compared to the sales chart rolleyes.gif dry.gif

Sing and Money On My Mind gained a few extra weeks top 40. None of the others have gained ANY weeks.

And Sia hasn't gained many weeks either, it's hardly been made into *that* much bigger a hit. Besides, it was top 20 on iTunes earlier in the week, hence the huge climb.

I think you need to remember that it's domino effect - a song debuts somewhat weak (#6 in Chandeliers case) and it starts dropping off quickly as radio starts losing interest - with streaming you suddenly have something that can keep up the momentum with radio and other media alike to keep a song visible to stimulate sales.

It'll be interesting to see how streaming effects the New Year chart.

It was top 20 on iTunes earlier in the week. It has had a big boost from an X Factor performance, the effect of which is now wearing off.

Official chart run:
6-9-11-16-18-14-20-21-22-25-30-29-30-30-35-36-34-28-22-33-37-40-...
Sales chart run:
6-9-13-19-20-17-21-25-24-28-37-36-36-31-38-42-47-32-28-40-47-42-...

Not really a whole lot different tongue.gif

The fact that it hasn't left and then re entered makes me happy!

But Money on My Mind is still in the combined top 100. It's like been at the 50s 60s for weeks and is nowhere to be seen in the sales chart drama.gif
