"Kiss and Make Up"

Average: 7.5

The Dua Lipa era culling continues with BLACKPINK collab "Kiss and Make Up" being the next track out. I'm surprised this isn't more loved on here. It's a gigantic banger and had the potential to smash outside of being a promo single. The song was produced by Banx & Ranx and is about using physical affection instead of words to solve an argument between two lovers. It charted in the top 40 of 19 countries including topping the charts in Malaysia and Singapore. In the UK, it reached number 36 and was certified silver. When will Starstruck feat. Flo Rida? kink.gif

Some members aren't particularly a fan of the track. Bustin Jieber describes it as a "potentially decent song ruined by sounding like generic Spotify fodder.", while Dobbo finds the track "overrated". On the other hand, JosephStyles argues that "There's plenty of identity and personality to make it stand out on a Spotify playlist [...], yet it slots in brilliantly with current trends." jakee writes that "it’s the first seemless amalgamation of pop and k-pop [...] and it’s really interesting that it’s dua doing it". According to 365, "Kiss and Make Up" is the "the trash bop we needed".

On Spotify, it is by quite some distance the most streamed Dua album track. With 485,785,748 streams as of 25 March, it is Dua’s 14th-most streamed track on the platform overall. Notably, it has more streams than many of Dua’s actual singles like "Blow Your Mind (Mwah)", "Hotter Than Hell" and "We're Good" among others.

Highest Score: 10 (StupidLove, Addy!)
Lowest Score: 5 (awardinary)

"Genesis"

Average: 7.55

We now say goodbye to the last remaining Dua Lipa album track "Genesis". This electro-guitar slow burner is the opening song to Dua Lipa’s self-titled record. The track employs Biblical references as a metaphor for a passionate love. It was officially shared in her documentary “See In Blue” as an acoustic version that follows her musical journey leading up to the release of her debut album. The song itself reflects on a Biblical reference to the beginning of the universe (otherwise known as Genesis). Dua Lipa has been able to use this to metaphor for tying back together her relationship with someone.

George.keh called "Genesis" a "really great opening track" that "sums up the sound of the album pretty perfectly". MrLoverboy wrote, "Genesis really is amazing and a perfect album opener. It doesn't get enough love here." Similarly, Botchia viewed it as "a fab album opener and a great song in its own right."

The track is very close to reaching 100 million stream milestone on Spotify, currently sitting on 99 million streams drama.gif #StreamGenesis

Highest Score: 10 (Highausakite)
Lowest Score: 5 (Bustin Jieber)

"Love Is Religion" (The Blessed Madonna Remix)

Average: 7.72

Club Future Nostalgia anthem "Love Is Religion" just falls short of spoiling an all Future Nostalgia top 5. It's a remix that comes in a mixed and unmixed form by The Blessed Madonna. The original version is an unreleased take from Future Nostalgia, one of many that have leaked online. Musically reminiscent of Madonna's "Like a Prayer", it's an upbeat pop house track with a choir-backed chorus and bubblegum synths for the ages.

Many forum members picked it as a highlight or favorite from Club Future Nostalgia including Jade, Brer, Lunar, lewistgreen and Voodoo among others. However, UltraSourRed argues that the original version is "obviously FAR superior". Music website Idolator furiously advocated its love for the remix, calling it "the closest we’ll ever get to “Like A Prayer 2.0”" in a full article write-up, as well as including it in its list of "20 Songs That Should Have Been Singles".

On Spotify, it is the second-most streamed track from Club Future Nostalgia with 18,265,083 streams as of 28 March 2022.

Highest Score: 10 (StupidLove, k👠th, Addy!)

5.
"Future Nostalgia"

Average: 7.97

The Future Nostalgia album opener, promo single and title track finishes at a very respectable number 5 here with an average just shy of 8 (we have Jord and StupidLove to thank for that smile.gif). Produced by Jeff Bhasker, it's a fun synth-funk pop track. Lipa does a cocky spoken word vocal and talk-rapped verses as well as purring falsetto in the chorus, announcing herself as "The Female Alpha". The track features vocodered backing vocals, courtesy of Bhasker, where he repeats the title of the song. In the lyric video, Dua Lipa is shown playing golf.

"Future Nostalgia" has been one of the more polarizing tracks from the era with some members on Buzzjack not taking to its spoken word style and on-the-nose lyrics. It was also compared by some members to Go by The Chemical Brothers, and grew on many members after the album release. Jade said the song is "such a grower" and that she "couldn't stand it at first but the verses became tolerable over time and the chorus is fab." The track has also grown on Frenchie who said it "works really well as the opening track". Addy! argues that "Future Nostalgia" "only made sense when album came out" and "[he] pretty much adores it". Jord, however, named it as his least favorite Dua track across her two albums, explaining that he was "not keen on that style of vocals", and that he "will never listen to [the song] on its own" and and will "skip it on shuffle too". Meanwhile, the song grew off Bustin Jieber who said it's "a hard pass".

The song has received over 131,332,351 streams on Spotify as of 1 April.

Highest Score: 10 (Nina West, Ansel, pippa, k👠th)

4.
"Pretty Please"

Average: 8.25

My personal favorite "Pretty Please" takes us into the 8 average scores. Even though it's as high as number 4 here, I still feel like this is extremely underrated and would have worked as a single later on in the era. Being a Ian Kirkpatrick production like "Don't Start Now", it feels like the midtempo sister to that. The production is so crisp and groovy and Dua's vocals are just gorgeous in her lower register. Dua Lipa said the song "feels really chill but the meaning behind it is a little intense and not really having any chill whatsoever."

There are a couple other Pretty Please stans on Buzzjack besides myself. George.keh said, "The production is just superb, them cow-bells, the vocals layered over the chorus, the slowing down of the vocals before each chorus- perfection for me!" blacksquare describes it as "such a fantastic example of how minimal production can build throughout a song to something really wonderful. So smooth and sultry." On the other hand, Jade called it "the main song on the album that jumps out as one [she] wants to like more, but it's never completely clicked in the way that others have."

With it not being as in-your-face as other songs from Future Nostalgia, "Pretty Please" was quite slept on upon the album release but has since grown to become the most streamed album track from the era with 150,787,398 streams on Spotify as of 1 April.

Highest Score: 11 (k👠th), 10 (blacksquare, Nick F1)
Lowest Score: 5 (awardinary)

"If It Ain't Me"

Average: 8.7

"If It Ain't Me" from Future Nostalgia: The Moonlight Edition scored an impressive 3x 11s and 4x 10s in the rate, bumping it up all the way into 3rd place. The track was produced by Junior Oliver Frid, arguably the least known producer from the era. It's a song in which Lipa talks about being afraid to leave her lover alone with someone else. Initially, the song featured Normani, but she was cut from the final version for unknown reasons. The version featuring Normani leaked in January of 2020, and trended on Twitter.

Many members on the site were disappointed that it wasn't released as the re-release's lead single over the marmite "We're Good". RobBot commented that the track was "SUCH an obvious single choice" and was "not sure how they stumbled on thinking We're Good was the way to go." Frenchie wrote that it was "screaming to be a single even without Normani". UltraSourRed said it was in "the top 3 from this whole era alongside the first 2 singles". Jade regarded it as "the one " from the new Moonlight tracks, saying, "the momentum of the production reminds [her] of 'Do You Wanna Come Over?' by Britney a little, just in a disco blender. Banger alert!"

On Spotify, "If It Ain't Me" has received over 32,483,779 streams as of 1 April, making it the most streamed of the 3 Moonlight Edition tracks.

Highest Score: 11 (Ansel, Jade, StupidLove), 10 (Frenchie, Nick F1, jtkoon, Addy!)
Lowest Score: 6 (blacksquare, pippa)

2.
"That Kind of Woman"

Average: 8.72

Possibly the biggest surprise success of the rate, "That Kind of Woman" finishes in the runner-up position, beating "If It Ain't Me" thanks to a .5 score. The song which first leaked in August 2020 may have been considered for a spot on the standard track list of Future Nostalgia, but it was ultimately scrapped, and re-used for The Moonlight Edition. Club Future Nostalgia also featured a remixed version of “That Kind of Woman” before the original version was officially released on The Moonlight Edition. This lends to the theory that the song could have had a spot on the standard track list, but was instead used for the aforementioned re-issue.

The song is about falling so deeply for someone, that no matter what, you’ll show them why you’re worth being chosen over others. The original version is great, but the Jacques Lu Cont mix from Club Future Nostalgia is the essential version; it takes the song to another level. Jade shares a similar view, saying the original "is falling a bit flat in comparison" to the "superb" remix. UltraSourRed writes that "the chorus is so good but the verses nearly drag this down to a 7.5 overall", while Addy! describes the synths as "delightful". Klaus commented that he would have "replaced it with Good in Bed on the main album." The song won the favourite Moonlight Edition track poll we held with 18 votes to If It Ain't Me's 15. Unfortunately, the song also resulted in Dua crashing out of the last AF Idol. If only the fans from this rate supported it there cry.gif

Highest Score: 11 (Nick F1, jtkoon, Addy!), 10 (Ansel, StupidLove, Aaron, Jord)
Lowest Score: 6 (Jade, awardinary, Sour Candy)

"Cool"

Average: 9.1

And the winner of the rate is... "Cool" winner.gif This Prince-influenced track is a romantic, summery song about meeting someone who has you losing all your cool. Dua mentioned exploring new sounds in Future Nostalgia, and it is evident in the way she sings in the song, showing a new range of her voice. Co-written by Tove Lo, it does have a very Tove sound to it. It's a lovely breezy moment amid the disco and samples of the rest of the album. Produced by TMS and Stuart Price, "Cool" is driven by a funk bass, while glitter gel noises and a drum line embody the production.

Bustin Jieber comments that the song "perfectly encapsulates that feeling of just surrendering yourself to someone." Bdelita says it "sounds so Caroline Polachek and Christine and the Queens which can literally never be a bad thing." Addy! writes, "Cool has shown that the more you listen the more you'll fall for it." Botchia calls it "such a 12/10 bop". In a hot take, Brer bemoaned that he was put off by Dua’s vocals in the song, which is he wrote "really get a bit unbearable and kind of uncomfortably close to Jessie J esque".

With over 115 million streams on Spotify, "Cool" is the third-most streamed album track from Future Nostalgia after "Pretty Please" and promo single "Future Nostalgia".

Highest Score: 11 (...ready for it, Nina West, pippa, Jord), 10 (Highausakite, k👠th, Bustin Jieber, Addy!)
Lowest Score: 6 (Jade)
