The Official Top 100 Motown songs of the Millennium
26 August 2019 | By Rob Copsey As Motown celebrates its 60th anniversary, we reveal the labels biggest songs, including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes and Marvin Gaye. Founded 60 years ago in Detroit, Michigan, Motown was the label that launched a musical revolution. Its impact still reverberates across music today: songs like Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, My Girl and Stop! In The Name of Love are timeless classics that remain as popular today as when they were first released. Motown was founded in 1959 by Berry Gordy, an unknown record producer who borrowed $800 from his family to start up the label. It went on to revolutionise pop with its distinctive brand of R&B-soul with a pop influence – and helped pushed black artists into the mainstream. To celebrate Motown’s 60th anniversary, Official Charts have teamed up with BBC Radio 2 to reveal the UK’s Official Top 100 Motown Chart, combining digital download sales and streams. The Top 100 will be counted down on August 26 between 12pm and 6pm, presented in two sections, by first by Craig Charles followed by Trevor Nelson. The chart is part of a weekend of Radio 2 shows about Motown, all of which can be listened to on BBC Sounds. Number 1 on the chart goes to Superstition by music legend Stevie Wonder. Despite being far from his highest charting single - peaking at Number 11 in 1973 - the track's popularity has endured over the years to earn its place at the top of the chart with 1.1 million chart sales. Celebrating the news, Stevie told us: "Motown is one of the all time great labels, and I’ve been associated with it all my life. Many of the artists have been my friends and family. I am proud to have been chosen at the top of such an incredibly talented group of artists." Discussing the Top 100 chart, Trevor Nelson said: "The Top 3 are three of the most timeless songs of all time, true classics which appeal to music lovers of all ages. Stevie is my favourite artist of all time so for me, the right song is at Number One - Superstition is perfection! I'm pleased that this chart features streams and downloads as it proves that the music of Motown is as popular as ever." Below are 10 key facts about the Top 100. The Top 10 appears at the bottom of the page - the full Top 100 will be posted at 6pm.

Ne-Yo looks so odd in that list. didn’t realise he was signed to Motown (and looks like he only was from 2012 onwards)

The Tears of a Clown was number one in 1970, but the OCC show it as number 34 in 1976? They also fail to credit Kim Weston on Marvin Gaye's It Takes Two, and fail to credit Marvin Gaye on Diana Ross' You Are Everything, despite both songs being credited to two artists in their own archive. Shanice also got to number 2 in 1992, and therefore didn't peak at 55 in 1991.
Are there any other errors that I and Lee Moore haven't already got on this list? (and already posted in the comments on the OCC page) |

Was enjoying listening to the countdown of this on Radio 2 today! It was definitively a lot better than normal daytime Radio 2. Rockwell - Somebody's Watchin Me one certainly sounded a lot different to anything else they played in the list around it because it is more electronic and synthpop.
QUOTE Ne-Yo looks so odd in that list. laugh.gif didn’t realise he was signed to Motown (and looks like he only was from 2012 onwards) Let me Love You is a bit odd but the rest of his songs in this kind of fit into the Motown sound I think... The title is somewhat misleading - I assumed it meant the current millennium, not the last one...

It's based on streams and sales from 2000 onwards, it just so happens that all the big sellers from Motown are the classics aside from Ne-Yo as Motown hasn't been much of a thing for decades.

Unlikely to be video streams.
OCC has closed down discussion on this topic after several errors were highlighted. Not very democratic. |

Could it be as simple as My Girl having re-recordings or versions by The Temptations that weren't released under the Motown label?
I know it was re-released in 1992 for the movie by Epic, could it be that those download sales doesn't count towards the Motown release? This post has been edited by tommie: Aug 28 2019, 11:47 AM |

"You Can't Hurry Love" had sold less than 287k as of June 2019, so has sold over 25k since then? Is it possible that they have somehow shifted 25k in a physcial format since 2000, perhaps vinyls reissues? This chart seems to be only digital formats, if I've understood it correctly. Edit: Sorry the quote was meant to be this one regarding My Girl: "6 MY GIRL TEMPTATIONS 43 in 1965 473K Yet on 13/8/18 OCC said for digital sales for tracks released in the 60s, 10 MY GIRL TEMPTATIONS 566,000 Why the discrepancy?"
