New album in September. Expect the single very, very soon!!
CANNOT WAIT! 'SAWAYAMA' is my favourite album of 2020. A lot of hype for this from me.
Oh now this is something to look forward to - some of the snippets have me excited already, especially the riff at the end
Hyped for this as I loved her last album! Admittedly I didn't care for 'LUCID' but that teaser already sounds a lot more interesting than that *.*
Hottest Record on Radio 1 on Wednesday so the single will be released about 6:10pm
Exciting!
"This Hell" out now!
I really like it. Gives me major early 10s Gaga vibes.
Trying to think who the voice in the verses reminds me of, the closest I can think of is Natalia Kills?
The album artwork is everything 🤩 one of my favourite covers in a long time
Agree that This Hell is very BTW era Gaga, which really suits her. I wish it went a bit harder in places, but I’m liking it a lot. Really hoping she’ll properly take off with this era, I feel like she’s set up to huge now.
(and can already tell the chorus will be stuck in my head all week)
Loving 'This Hell' - JUST what I wanted from her!! The album cover I am not totally in love with yet. I am comparing it to the SAWAYAMA album cover which is pure ART so it's hard to come close to that for me. It's certainly striking though.
I don't know if I like it the lyrics are kinda cringe imo
(why is this in the Indie forum x)
This is very Rina listening to the Born This Way album and asking Xenomania to make her something like that.
bop
Quite pleasant actually - but yes it’s definitely pretty much a straight up pop song - not sure it’s best placed in this forum?
It's such a bop! Love the Shania-esque intro, the Britney reference and "that's hot"; very late-90's/Y2K which suits Rina so well. The album cover is also a total serve.
Yeah this is quite the bop! Fingers crossed it can do something for her.
I'd say it definitely belongs in pop btw.
Came here to say that this could be a forgotten Born This Way album track… so naturally I’m obsessed with it
Love this! I thought it was a little Marina-esque (particularly the talky bits) but blacksquare's description of it being Xenomania-does-Born This Way feels very fitting!
This is growing on me! I like the Shania/BTW influences, but it still feels like it'd be one of the weakest songs on SAWAYAMA. I'm gonna give it time though because I feel like I'll come round to it eventually.
She's a goddamn STAR!!!! Really hope this takes off for her.
NGL this would probs be bottom 5 on 'SAWAYAMA' for me, but I still love it. Love the lyric referencing what the papz did to Britney, Lady Di & Whitney.
I've had this on repeat all night long. So fun. I can't wait for more Sawayama!!
Does anyone else get Marina & The Diamonds vibes from this? I'm loving it the more I hear it, but the verses make it sound like they'd be a perfect fit on 'The Family Jewels' album.
Really catchy! I like it a lot.
I think this is slowly becoming my song of the year.
I read a comment on YT video somewhere that she should have written it as "This hell is heaven with you" instead of "better with you"... ugh. A missed opportunity!!!!
This Hell is actually quite decent!
Rina is gonna bless me with a new album on my birthday? I knew I was up to something when I started stanning *.*
Definitely agree that “This Hell” is very much Marina with more maximal production, I dig it!
Marina doing Born This Way is what I'm getting!
Pre-ordered the vinyl too
I'm obsessed with Rina, she can do no wrong!!!
Surely she's gonna be one of the biggest pop girls of the 2020s??
Her music feels v much as though she's STUDIED what makes a good song and she just nails the formula every time, I think that's why we get hints of Gaga, Marina, Charli, Shania, Natalia etc throughout her stuff but in the same vain it never feels unauthentic to her? It's very Rina x
Okay I love This Hell now lmao, all her songs have been growers for me though.
Unfortunately I don't think she will get mainstream success Can see her being an artist who has a solid fanbase like Charli, Tove, Carly etc.
The video is out now and it's GREAT!
This reminds me of Sweet But Psycho in that first listen I thought it was a Primark version of Lady Gaga but then it grows more and more with each listen. Think this stands a chance of being a hit?
What a fun video that is. Certainly helps the track keep growing as well.
Such a great video!!! I hope the video can help turn this into a hit *_* I need Rina to have a massive break through this year.
It's not going to happen
THAT VIDEO She's such a star. I really hope this can become a hit
2nd single Catch Me In The Air is out on Monday. There's a snippet on TikTok.
The Corrs are back! Very nostalgic and instant — dreamy.
Very much Coors/Since U Been Gone lite inspired.
Hoping this album gets a Deluxe because 13 tracks aren’t going to be enough.
Oh I actually really like that it's very 90s but it's done well
I’m so done with the GP sleeping on this absolute SUPERSTAR
Another amazing song, but am I surprised? Not even remotely
Getting to the point where I think she can do absolutely NO WRONG for me. Amazing.
Beautiful really need to get a ticket to her tour!
(also I think she's very firmly cemented herself as pop over indie )
This is really wonderful! I liked This Hell a lot too but this is so good, a very late 90s chorus and structure and even a fade out, which is so rare these days!
Another track is being released on Wednesday as she has nabbed the Hottest Record slot on Radio 1 again
Another stellar track - I even heard 'Catch Me In The Air' last night at a straight sports bar. RINA IS COMING.
This is chunky and funky in parts, but also nods to early '00s with 'been living without yooooouuuu'. She has an impeccable talent for taking her inspiration but making it 100% her own.
Album pushed back to September 16th.
'Hold The Girl' is easily the most instant thing she's ever released, I'm loving it already! If this can't get her a hit then I don't know what will
also, can we not just move this to pop already?
Wow, she's really serving vocals on this!
The key change and production switch-ups *.* LOVE IT. Much better than Catch Me In The Air which I found a bit too basic and on the sugary side.
Really love this (although I think describing it as a potential hit is a bit of a stretch ), that's 3/3 this era! That final minute
Each song has been better than the last so far from this era, love this one !
I think each track has been getting better and better for me too. Holy crap HTG is incredible! WOWWWW
Does hold the girl sample an opera song
How is she doing this?! 3/3 for me - the album is going to be stellar. *_*
Wow.
AMAZING video
Incredible video!
She's such a star.
Such a great song and video! Can't wait for this album, she's killing it!
I was listening again to her debut yesterday and it’s not as good as I remember it to be (although Dynasty, XS and Snakeskin remained great). This is shaping up to be much better so far
I'm getting more and more obsessed with 'Hold The Girl', it NEEDS to be hit!
Great upcoming record. This hell is still the best for me so far. Those vocal melodys are incredible. Production is handled very well and a nice piece of social commentary
Hurricanes sounds like a step down from the others to me from that clip, the lyrics feel very generic too
Got my tix to see her at Rock City in October... I'm so, SO hyped!
Preview
I am an absolute SUCKER for a huge, power, pop ballad and 'Phantom' is OUTSTANDING and everything that I love in that kind of song. WOW.
STUNNING.
Ofc this was written with Lauren Aquilina. LOVE!!!!!
"Phantom" is beautiful. Also "Hold The Girl" is fast becoming one of my favourite songs of hers. This album is going to be so good *_* I really like all 4 songs she's given us so far.
New Spotify Fans First "Blue Jay" variant! Limited to 1000 copies:
https://store.dirtyhit.co.uk/release/329125-rina-sawayama-hold-the-girl-alt-cover-blue-jay-vinyl-spotify-fans-first
Sold out already... which I'm kinda surprised by given a lot of fans will have already ordered one of the other versions
The title track of this has overtaken 'Who's Gonna Save U Now?' as my favourite song to date from her I think - I was a fan of 'Catch Me In The Air' too (though wasn't really sold on 'This Hell'). I never listened to her previous album in full (although did hear most of it from cherrypicking) but I think I'll listen to this one, shaping up to hopefully be better for me!
Another track is being released on Monday evening. It's supposed to be Hottest Record on Raido 1 but we will see if that still happens
Out now!
Hold The Girl > This Hell > Phantom > Hurricanes > Catch Me In The Air
FOR NOW!
“It might chart” - Rina Sawayama, 14th September 2022
Doing a listen thru on this now, this has been the album I’ve been waiting for all year.
Minor Feelings, although a very short introduction to the album, fits very well into the overall feel of the album. Moody and deep, I’m loving it.
Of course, I know Hold The Girl, This Hell and Catch Me In The Air by heart already. Hold The Girl continues to be ABSOLUTELY STUNNING.
Forgiveness fits so well with this album, I get such a 00s vibe from this song, a nice big buildup to that last minute of the song. Love the bells at the end.
Holy (Til You Let Me Go) SHUT UP OMG I AM IN LOVE. This may be one of my favourite Rina songs. Ever. THE BELLS. AGAIN.
Your Age, dirty, clunky. This easily would have fit very well into on the SAWAYAMA album as well. I could even see this in the Girls Aloud “Tangled Up” era.
Imagining may take a while to grow on me, great continuation on sound however because this could have also ended up on a SAWAYAMA double deluxe album.
Frankenstein was built up to be one of Rina’s top tracks and I can see why. It’s loud, it’s in your face, its pace is infectious. This is definitely one of the top tracks of the album (but I can’t put down Holy). What an ear worm. I DONT WANT TO BE A MONSTER ANYMORE. Sorry Gaga.
Send My Love To John, heartbreakingly beautiful. It’s masterpieces like this that takes me from wanting to just listen to the music to wanting to learn more about the artists and their story. I was a mess by the end of the song.
To Be Alive, fits perfectly at the end of this album.
SAWAYAMA is in my top 4 albums of all time, it made such an impact to me when I heard it. It will be interesting to see how this album sits with me longer term. It’s definitely more of a continuous album where I found SAWAYAMA tapped into so many different genres and sound.
Feeling a lot of emotions, Send My Love To John and Phantom together. IM WEEPING.
Listening to it now! So excited for this. I've heard 'Hold The Girl', 'This Hell', 'Catch Me In The Air' & 'Phantom'. I held off on 'Hurricanes' coz I wanted as much of the album to listen to for the first time on album release as possible.
STELLAR
The single run of This Hell > Catch Me In the Air > Hold the Girl > Phantom > Hurricanes was immaculate but there are some real treasures on this album. Holy, Your Age, and Frankenstein being the clear stand outs on first listen. Now onto listen-through number two!
EDIT: ok Imagining goes OFF too
I’m on my second listen now, Minor Feelings into Hold The Girl works phenomenally.
- 'Minor Feelings' is a STUNNING start. It's a shame it's more of an intro though!
- 'Hold The Girl' really is beautiful, isn't it?
- 'This Hell' should be retitled to 'This Bop' tbh.
- 'Catch Me In The Air' is going to POP OFF live! Very excited to hear it and witness it live! So euphoric and anthemic.
- Really liking the chorus for 'Forgiveness'. I think the verses are going to need some time to grow, but that chorus is beautiful.
- HOLY FUCKING SHIT! 'HOLY (TIL YOU LET ME GO)' IS THE ONE. WOW! THIS IS AMAZE.
- Ohhhh... really liking 'Your Age' too! Different vibe to the other tracks, but in true Rina fashion... still sounds kinda cohesive!
- 'Imagining' is GREAT too! Something very underground British music to this. It works so, SO WELL!
- 'Frankenstein' is another absolute BOP! This last 4 track run... WHEW!!!!
- 'Hurricanes' is GRAND! INCRED!
- 'Send My Love To John' is stunning. This will break me if she performs it on her tour.
- 'Phantom' is one of my favourite songs of the year and I think it's my favourite from this era so far (well, that I had heard before the album drop lol). I love the classic power ballad feel to it!
- 'To Be Alive' what an ending. Kinda encompasses EVERYTHING about the album and puts it all into one song. It's breathtaking.
An album full of "arena ready" hooks and anthems! ALBUM OF THE YEAR FOR ME!
WOW.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Forgiveness is going to end up being the quiet bop that will end up being my most played by the end of the year.
I’m getting Girls Aloud “SEE THE DAY” at the midpoint of the song. This song would have been sensational for Sarah Harding.
Adore this album on first listen, it's giving me ACTUAL 00s not like the pastiche Y2k aesthetic that's trendy, a real sense of nostalgia whilst still feeling so fresh and forward thinking.
Holy is INCREDIBLE, other highlights for me that weren't released prior to the album (5/5 smashes there) are To Be Alive, Frankenstein and Send My Love To John.
Just decided to go to the signing in Nottingham on Thursday.
So impressed by this album. Idk why it's taken me by surprise so much when I love her so much already? I think I'm officially putting her in the "Can do no wrong for me" category at this point. She's just...
Halloween is only a month and a half away, she absolutely needs to release Frankenstein and give us a completely OTT music video.
I DONT WANNA BE A MONSTER ANYMORE. I DONT WANNA BE A MONSTER. I DONT WANNA BE A MONSTER ANYMORE. I DONT WANT TO BE A MONSTER.
Happy to say I loved this album as much as I was expecting to! There's some real moments on there. How do we think it's gonna do, does she have any chance of getting to #1 with it do we think?
Stunning album, I wasn't AS keen on the pre album singles but as a whole package it really works so well. 'Holy (Til You Let Me Go)' and 'Forgiveness' are my instant faves.
Regarding how well it'll do, no chance of #1 with BLACKPINK releasing - I reckon Top 5 but considering her last album didn't even chart on it's first week (iirc), that'll be a huge achievement!
Is it just me or does she sound a little bit like Delta Goodrem in the chorus of 'Forgiveness'?
EDIT: Also can someone move her topics to pop please?
This is all over the place but it’s pretty darn fun. Definitely the best pop album I’ve heard since Future Nostalgia.
It’s a bit greatest showman / X factor in places for me but not so much that it puts me off
And no she can’t go to pop. She deserves better than to be rubbing shoulders with a Westlife rate!
'Holy' is EPIC
Full Listen #3 after revisiting the FORGIVENESS > HOLY > YOUR AGE run over and over last night.
AOTY territory
Hurricanes Music Video!
Lisnening to it for the 2nd time now, such a great album! all the singles have been brilliant (though phantom i'm still not fully sold on phantom yet) such a great era! bit worried though as i haven't been notified that my my cd/cassette/aet card bundle have been shipped out : o hope that happens soon
That’s fantastic news that Rina has plans for Frankenstein, it’s already stuck in my head!!
Rina has done it again I've only actually listened through once so far but I can tell this is going to be one of my fav albums of the year, even if it's never going to topple SAWAYAMA. Imagining and Frankenstein are already standing out among the album tracks for me, though the singles are still the best tracks.
I think I'd rate the singles like this: Catch Me In The Air = Hold The Girl > This Hell > Phantom > Hurricanes. Imagining would slot in either side of Phantom.
Album of the year without a doubt. She is a visionary.
No skips whatsoever.
It’s like she’s created a tapestry of every female pop artist between the late 90s and late 00s from Shania Twain through P!nk and Katy Perry to Gaga… and, to be fair to her, she pulls it all off quite remarkably
To Be Alive is a fave at the moment
Where do we think this will go in the charts? Surely she'll be able to get 5k+? If so, that'd put her on track for a top 5 debut, right?
I really hope so!
I was a bit worried to hear the album as none of the pre-album releases were in the same league as the top highlights from her previous record for me. However, I can definitely get on board with some of the album tracks more - the run of 'Your Age'/'Imagining'/'Frankenstein' was particularly exciting! I appreciate some of the experimentation she was going for.
Nice performance this morning on Sunday Brunch an acoustic version of ‘Hold The Girl’!
Been listening to this pretty much non-stop since Friday. Here's my ranking & rating of the album:
10.0 Frankenstein
10.0 To Be Alive
10.0 Holy (Til You Let Me Go)
10.0 Phantom
10.0 Hurricanes
09.0 Imagining
09.0 Minor Feelings
09.0 Hold The Girl
09.0 This Hell
09.0 Send My Love To John
08.5 Catch Me In The Air
08.0 Your Age
08.0 Forgiveness
I'm obsessed. No skips. Most other artists wish they could have a song half as good as 'Forgiveness' tbh.
I had a few more listens over the weekend, and I've added the album to my ongoing playlists. A quick rank:
01: Hold The Girl
02: Holy (Til You Let Me Go)
03: Forgiveness
04: Frankenstein
05: Your Age
06: This Hell
07: Send My Love To John
08: Catch Me In The Air
09: Phantom
10: Hurricanes
11: Imagining
12: To Be Alive
13: Minor Feelings
I think there are issues with some of the tracklisting order, some abrupt shifts or songs that feel out of place but individually practically every song is brilliant.
My favourite song on it remains Catch Me In The Air while Holy (Til You Let Me Go) is my firm favourite album track. What a stomper.
I hear so many influences on it (which probably explains why some reviews are saying it's everything and the iamspamspamamisink esque) and I agree which may make listening from start to end not the best of experiences as time goes on. But certainly she has managed to create so many incredible songs individually and loads that I will hopefully revisit more and more over time.
Aside: I NEED VISUALS for most of these tracks too?? Some of the tracks are screaming for it.
did any of you pre-order physical copies of the album? if so have you recieved it yet/ had it shipped yet?
Yep. I ordered the lava vinyl from her store and it dispatched last Thursday and arrived Saturday.
Rina is apparently #2 in the midweeks!
Really loving this album. Early standouts for me are Forgiveness, Send my love to John and Hurricanes (Kelly Clarkson stan )
GWAN RINA!
Good merch in her store including some first week launch memorabilia (T-Shirts). I still need to pick up my Vinyl.
RINA IS AT #2 IN THE MIDWEEKS WITH OVER 10K SALES!!!
over 9k are physicals too! This is amazing for her! Shes got the top 5 (maybe even top 3) certainly locked in as last weeks #5 sold just over 5k! Plus theres no risk of harry overtaking her as theres no way hes doing 10k this week! This is so amazing for her! I'm so proud
It is a wonderful achievement for her.
Talent wins
Truly fantastic that she's already exceeded 10k I was quietly confident that this would do nicely for her, in the sense she could go Top 10, but I really wasn't expecting those sales. Go Rina!
Her Birmingham and Nottingham signings have been rescheduled for dates when she's touring those cities, due to illness </3
She's been working so hard in the album build up so I'm not surprised it's caught up to her. Wishing her a speedy recovery!
I bought the CD just now, was going to wait for a bit but in the mids she's barely 100 copies clear of No.2, I'd kick myself if she missed that by 1 sale, as unlikely as it is to be that close. It's such a good album.
30,990 sales for her debut album 'SAWAYAMA'.
She missed out on #2 by 77 sales tho... that's crushing, but better than if she missed the #1 by that many copies!
I presume this will free fall this week, which will be a shame, but hoping for 2nd week top 75 at least?
Such a shame she missed out on #2 by just a few sales.
Rina Sawayama is officially the highest charting Japanese artist in history in the UK (via PopCrave)
I'm sure Jay can confirm but I believe it only had 2 weeks in the top 200 (first week and the week the vinyl came out), plus another week just outside the top 200 the week after the vinyl release as it seems some of those sales leaked into the following week for some reason, indicating that it probably should have been higher than #80 that one week.
(Digging up the Discord message that Jay mentioned this in, the week of its top 100 entry it only had 176 streaming sales, that's nowhere near enough to place it in the top 200 in any normal week)
Its total in those 3 weeks was 3,628 which means it's sold 27,362 in the remaining weeks, it's been out for ~29 months so a very rough estimate from that without counting the exact number of weeks places its average weekly sales excluding those 3 weeks somewhere around 250 (a little less than that I think) which seems reasonable, but again definitely not enough to make it a top 200 staple.
It'll probably trickle to silver eventually but I don't know if I'd say her profile has really increased that much with this album, she's mostly just consolidated her fanbase more into one week and played the game smarter to maximise the sales out of that fanbase. This album still didn't really do particularly well on streaming.
Yep, it only managed 2 weeks in the Top 200! #106 on 24th April 2020 (1,162 sales) and #80 on 12th November 2021 (1,608 sales).
Its total was 23,370 on 19th November 2021, and now it's 30,990 on 24th September 2022 - that is 7,620 more sales in 44 weeks, which works out as 173 sales a week on average (specifically 173.1818)! So that's certainly way below a typical #200 which tends to require about 850 each week.
If it managed to keep adding 173 to its total every week then it would go Silver in December 2025, argh x
By the way, so thrilled for her getting to #3
Just got around to hearing 'Flavour Of The Month'... definitely see why it was only a bonus track.
It's decent though. Reminds me of 'Money Honey' by Gaga.
A shame she didn't bag the #2. Still though, what an achievement and WHAT AN ALBUM!!
My favourite track is changing constantly. Currently hooked on Minor Feelings. Not had this love for an album in a while
Her version of 'Happier Than Ever' in the live lounge was so good!
I love her so much.
3-92
I know this is the norm now and Rina is performing the same as most other new releases but I thought/hoped it might have held up slightly better in week 2.
Just back from seeing her live, she was great fun
Yeah I loved so many of the live renditions… the rockier section in particular sounded so much more amazing live, Your Age was possibly my highlight of the whole thing with that amazing build up into the song. Frankenstein was also amazing. Would have loved to hear Free Woman in an ideal set but everything else was pretty much perfect for me.
The worst bit for me was when she asked us all to crouch down… I was like OMG you have no idea how difficult this is at my age!
Looks like she's filming a halloween video for "Frankenstein"!
I saw her at Rock City too! *.*
What a STAR. The album was pretty much performed start to finish (except with This Hell being the final song obvz) and Forgiveness being the only song she didn't perform from it! Was very happy with the 'SAWAYAMA' song selections particularly Bad Friend! Wasn't expecting to hear that. But I would have LOVED to have heard Dynasty live!
She utilised the stage so perfectly and performed her ASS off! Frankenstein, Your Age, Hold The Girl, Comme Des Garçons, XS & This Hell were all particularly incredible and my highlights! Especially the latter! My ears popped off when the crowd screamed "FUCK WHAT THEY DID TO BRITNEY, TO LADY DI & WHITNEY"... it was so loud lmaooo! Amazing! I also loved the middle 8 chant back!
Just amazing stuff. I'd absolutely LOVE to see her utilise a bigger stage and a bigger budget. She's an absolute STAR! (She was also so nice when I met her earlier in the day - although we were being rushed through so it was hard to talk properly lmao)
Gave this album a listen the other day - wasn't really impressed by the first third ('Hold The Girl' the song is still great of course and I still like 'Catch Me In The Air' too, but I've kind of gone off 'This Hell' even more now - not that I was ever that big of a fan - and the first couple of album tracks were both just decent) but it really picks up a lot from track 6 onwards! 'Holy (Til You Let Me Go)' and 'Imagining' definitely join the title track as my top 3 from the album, not yet decided what my overall fave is but those 2 are both bangers Also a fan of 'Your Age' (similar concept to Demi Lovato's '29' but a much better overall song) and 'Frankenstein' (Rina making a better Ava Max song than Ava Max can these days), 'Hurricanes' kind of gives me Disney Channel vibes but in a good way, and a shoutout to the slightly more overlooked 'To Be Alive' which I thought was a great closing track after another slight lull in the two songs before it.
I'd say it's a shame she so narrowly missed out on a #2 album but I listened to Suede's album too and I have to say they did have the better album of the two but yeah, this was a good pop album, definitely an improvement on the standard of what I heard from her debut for me.
She's performing on Strictly on Halloween week
Get that promo, Rina! Frankenstein seems like a given. Can't wait!
Wow that seems like a surprising pick for a Strictly performer but get that promo ~
Frankenstein is coming! Has been infuriatingly stuck in my head for days now
She was so good live last night 😭 The show she puts on with the limited space she has at these venues is next level, I can’t imagine what she’d do if she ever got as big as arena levels because the star quality is just OOZING.
Love her and now absolutely love this album so much.
Omg yes @ the strictly performance. I hope she performs "Frankenstein" and releases the music video for it the same week. Halloween classic in the making.
Who knows, perhaps it will become Rita's first charting solo song and be around for years to come.
I think I know that's not going to happen. x
Wow at the Strictly promo announcement! Can't wait!
If only she had Graham Norton that same week or something (not that she'll get a hit ofc - it'll just be nice to see her getting exposure!)
After relistening to my highlights a couple of times I've decided 'Holy (Til You Let Me Go)' is the one from this era (/ her entire discography) for me it's hit even harder after paying more attention to the lyrics (which I didn't do on first listen as per usual).
I think 'Hold The Girl' remains my 2nd fave just barely ahead of 'Imagining'. But I like all 3 of those more than everything I have heard from her before this era.
I'm so happy that 'Frankenstein' is getting a push! What an instant gem. I'm a huge Strictly fan as well, had to do a double take when I saw she'd be performing on the results
'Your Age' remains my favourite on the album so I'm glad that it has grown on some of you guys after seeing her live
She was INCREDIBLE on Monday in Cardiff! I definitely agree she had that stadium vibe/confidence/energy even in a small venue, just so so good.
Send My Love To John, This Hell, STFU! and Imagining were my absolute highlights.
Frankenstein Music Video.
Love it! Rina looks HAWT.
The music video is really good! Fingers crossed the song can do something with the music video release/strictly performance/halloween. Even if it's just charting at #199 on the spotify chart for one day.
She's such a STAR! That choreo is great and very Tik Tok friendly, which means it won't go viral on there lmao.
Everything Rina does is just gold, she was incredible live when I saw her in Glasgow as well! Hyped to see all the Frankenstein promo, definitely a fave from the album
So... doing the classic "performing the older single despite having a song that's more popular right now (higher in her Spotify top 5) and just pushed a video out for it" move...
She's performing 'This Hell' on Strictly tonight.
Hype still as I found a love for the song I didn't know I had when I saw it live... but yeah. Woulda loved to have seen her 'Frankenstein choreo on mainstream TV.
Whaaaatttttt? Frankenstein was made for this moment gah
I love the song, but seriously. That is baffling.
Oh that's surprising! I thought it would be Frankenstein given its Halloween week and it's the song she's currently pushing with the video etc so that would have made sense but I'm not bad about seeing this hell
What a shame that she's not doing 'Frankenstein'! Still happy she's performing though, quite an inspired pick for the Strictly audience.
Merp. I don't understand the decision but still happy she has a slot?
Oh, how disappointing! I was really looking forward to, and always assumed she would be singing Frankenstein.
However, maybe an opportunity for her to get a few more fans under her belt! 'This Hell' is one of my most played songs of the album and of course, one of her more instant songs perhaps? Hoping it all pops off tonight!
Strictly musical guests typically just stand there while the professionals dance around, so it was cool to see her getting involved with the choreography!
She's such a star! Hope it can get the album another week inside the top 100. How has the Strictly performances been affecting past performers this series?
Such a baffling decision - I'd understand if 'This Hell' was actually a hit but what difference does it make when 99% of the people watching still wouldn't have known the song either way? I guess 'This Hell' is sort of on theme too but 'Frankenstein' was really perfect for this moment (and a way better song), ah well.
Why is Rina in Indie, Rock & Alternative? It’s like having an Ava Max thread in here
She had a few somewhat rock/metal influenced songs on her debut album so she got put here and just hasn't been moved since ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
She had an excellent performance on Strictly Come Dancing.
I don't mind if her topics are moved to pop... someone just needs to do it 😂
I guess her being signed to Dirty Hit may have had its part to play in her being placed in this forum as well? She'd be way more suited to Pop though!
I created this thread in this forum coz this is where her last album thread was and iirc, there was some kind of agreement that all one stars threads will be in the same genre forum etc.. but yeah, I'd say she's always been pop tbh. *shrugs*
We've had this discussion before - pop is clearly where her music is at this point so I would say this definitely isn't the right forum! Could someone just move it already?
On the subject of her Strictly performance though, agreed that 'Frankenstein' would have been more apt for Halloween week but I actually think 'This Hell' was more of an inspired choice, the song is way more instant and more likely to get people into her, which was basically the goal. So well done to whoever made that decision. Brilliant performance too!
I disagree, 'Frankenstein' is easily on the same level of accessibility I'd have thought? It's basically an Ava Max song lol (except actually good x).
Moved x
I am totally underwhelmed by her Strictly performance. Not sure if it's because I'm still bitter about the choice of song, but also the complete lack of HORROR vibes, the pretty limp chorography and the minimal staging. I don't know why I pictured so much more but my expectations are v high for an artist like her and she didn't deliver imo. I actually think she sucked out so much fun from the song too oops the song makes sense with DRAMA - but it's also how I feel about its music video too. She needs to drop this song like 3 months ago and showcase a lot more of what the album has to offer.
Agreed, I love Rina but that wasn’t a very good performance on Strictly.
I didn’t think it was good either, she should have done Frankenstein. Also I’m not convinced the lyrics of This Hell translates well to the audience that Strictly has.
Ps this topic is okay in pop now she’s not rubbing shoulders with a Westlife rate
Here it is!
THAT WAS THE STRICTLY PERFORMANCE WE SHOULD HAVE GOT. Amazing!!
So disappointed I didn’t get tickets for the American Leg of the tour. That was sensational!
Confusingly, 'Hurricanes' has been added to the R1 playlist today, which indicates it's the next single being pushed. Does that mean the 'Frankenstein' video was just a little fun Halloween thing?
Performing ‘Hold the Girl’ on Graham Norton Show on 16th December!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001g61m
The performance on Graham was great! She's such a star!
Incredible performance, Hold The Girl is easily Top 3 Rina for me.
What a perfect album to transition from Summer to Fall as well.
I’ve seen a few rumours that Rina might be our Eurovision entry this year but not really sure where it’s came from but I think she would be brilliant if she was. I did notice the BBC were promoting her quite a lot at the end of last year by giving her a Strictly performance which is quite a big slot for an artist that isn’t overly well known.
Apparently a new shortened edit of 'Holy' is coming out on Friday. If that doesn't scream Eurovision I don't know what does
!!!!!
I wish but I feel we’re in for disappointment
Omg PLEASE I’m praying 😭
I will DIE if it is. That was a key highlight from my favourite album of last year.
Zoe Ball is apparently announcing tomorrow morning, so praying hard for this now.
My favourite from the album - please be true!!!
I do feel like we're going to be clowned with Mae Muller though.
is this a sign too?
I really hope so, I’ve just had a listen to it now and it sounds very good.
not that it would’ve taken much to outdo that Mae Muller song being tipped.
edit - just seen that The Sun have confirmed it to be Mae now oh well
This makes such perfect sense. It's something that sounds contemporary, like it would appeal to certain European audiences and it has a nice dollop of drama.
(and most of all she and the song would get such invaluable exposure from a selfish point of view!)
Also, the fact that after the 3:00 mark it's just a 19-second outro that can seamlessly be sawn off the end - what else would they need to shorten for a new edit?
Not The Sun outing Mae as the entry when it could've been this, gah
I hope this isn't a lie though (damn you Twitter) and Holy is still a single at least
People faking stuff like this for clout need a reality check
Bang goes my hopes and dreams
Love me some rocky Rina!! I love this in a "clearly made for a film soundtrack, but it's an absolute BOP!" kinda way. I can definitely envision it's use in the John Wick credits.
I quite enjoy this!
Killed it at Glastonbury What a performer.
Also wow at this:
QUEEN. MOTHER. GOD.
THAT.
WAS.
OUTSTANDING.
MY FKING GOD.
She basically did her own tour with outfit changes and a set design… I don’t think I’ve seen that for a festival show who wasn’t a headliner???? Incredible.
Yes Rina!
I hope her albums re-enter the top 100 on fhe album chart this week (doubtful but fingers crossed!).
Incredible. Deserved a main stage slot.
She just has IT. She had the crowd in the palm of her hands.
There’s no way at this stage of her career she would have been on the main stage!
I didn't say she would be. I said she deserved to be.
LOOOOVE that vinyl! I love the cover too, iirc that was already some sort of exclusive cover, right?
Ordered mine as I still love the album <3
Yeah! This artwork was used for the Spotify exclusive vinyl. That vinyl is a solid blue colour. This new version differs in terms of vinyl colour and also the inner label design. I own the Spotify version so I don’t feel the need for this one! I might get the CD though.
I hope the streaming services version she mentions actually has some bonus tracks.
Out today. Looks like the streaming formats have literally just changed the cover. No new tracks or anything. A shame really.
Hyped to get my vinyl though. It really does look lovely in the pictures!
Not sure if this is an official single release and going to be sent to radio etc. (feels quite late in the era if it is), or just something thrown out there, but 'Imagining' feat. Amaarae is out today:
I loved the song already but this new version is pretty good too, gives the song an extra shot of life!
Love
She's also released a 'new' song 'Flavour Of The Month' on a streaming deluxe version although my understanding is it was previously a Japan exclusive bonus track.
Eurovision 2020!?
It feels like we moved on from this era so quickly. I appreciate this from Rina! (As I re-add the album to my current playlist rotation for the 3rd time)
SAWAYAMA and Hold The Girl back to back was sensational. I cannot wait for her next project, hopefully it’s soon.
Maybe it'll be of interest to somebody - a cassette of Hold the Girl is only £2 (+80p p&p) on Banquet at the moment. https://www.banquetrecords.com/rina-sawayama/hold-the-girl/DH01510
I bought one, received it today!
