04. Let It Be (1970) / Let It Be
07/19 votes

Just missing out on a place in the top 3 is 'Let It Be'! But don't fret Paul fans as we are left with an all-McCartney top 3. 'Let It Be' was both written and sang by Paul. The single even features backing vocals from his late wife Linda too. George Harrison also contributes a standout guitar solo. Paul's inspiration behind 'Let It Be', a Beatles classic, was due to a dream he had about his mother around the time when tense sessions for 'The Beatles' (aka 'The White Album') occurred. Paul sadly lost his mother to cancer at just 14 years old. She told him "it will be alright, just let it be" in the dream and is also the inspiration behind the "mother Mary" lyric, although when people interpret the name Mary in a religious way, he responded that people can interpret it however they want. 'Let It Be' is a comforting ballad that has stood the test of time as one of the group's most well-known songs. It was a rare Beatles single to miss the top spot in the U.K., settling for #2, but topped the U.S. Billboard chart. At the time its #6 debut was the highest ever on that chart. It was the final Beatles single released before Paul would announce his departure from the band. However, the 'Let It Be' album was released after the announcement was made. A documentary film of the same name was released as an insight of the process behind recording their album. These sessions took place way back in January 1969, with 'Abbey Road' actually being recorded after 'Let It Be', but they were released the other way round. It's now the end of the road for 'Let It Be' but still in the running are 'Yesterday' from 'Help!', 'Eleanor Rigby' from 'Revolver' and non-album single 'Hey Jude'. One more battle now until the FINAL round!

As with most Beatles songs I do feel that 'Let It Be' is a timeless classic, but everything else in the top 10 is stronger!

Glad to be voting for something else now - 'Yesterday' this time.

Amazing top 3. Going for Eleanor Rigby as that would leave my top 2 of theirs.

There's very little to choose between the remaining three but I've gone for Hey Jude.
