BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Buzzjack's Biggest Hits- 2006-2016

Posted by: Gezza Feb 8 2016, 07:51 PM

As you may know Buzzjack is celebrating its 10th birthday in March, and in honour of the occasion we’re going to be counting down the Top 100 best selling singles of the last decade 2006-2016. All sales have been calculated up to the chart of W/E 04.02.16 and include streams, because of the streaming element it makes estimating especially hard on songs that have not charted over the last few years so I can’t vouch for all tracks accuracy!

I know that lists of best sellers can be found elsewhere on the internet but please DO NOT POST SPOILERS and let’s just enjoy reliving some of the tracks which have got Buzzjack all worked up over the years. The only condition on these songs is that they must have charted for the first time after 2005! Anything before, regardless of how much it sold since 2006 is excluded.

I've tried to cross reference the BPI awards list plus work by Andy and Shireblogger@haven, along with MW, Alan Jones, and some other best selling lists produced by the OCC.

So it's time to say to Buzzjack with the first of many celebrations over the next few months!!

As per usual your contributions are greatly encouraged and appreciated biggrin.gif

great stuff ~ looking forward to this cheer.gif

Looking forward to this! Will be nice to see how songs from 2006-8 in particular have increased since their height of popularity given the low sales of the time but with the impact of trickle sales and streams. Hope to see some forgotten gems along the way!

Posted by: ThePensmith Feb 8 2016, 08:21 PM

Oh this will be fun, look forward to seeing who features smile.gif Can't believe 2006 is now 10 years ago. I feel so old!

Posted by: Colm Feb 8 2016, 08:35 PM

There's going to be far too much Snow Patrol and Kings of Leon in this biggrin.gif

Posted by: BillyH Feb 9 2016, 08:40 AM

Already preparing myself for the inevitable horror of a ton of awesome late-2000s tracks completely blitzed in sales by a load of early-mid 2010s dross...

Posted by: mdh Feb 9 2016, 08:41 AM

Not going to ruin it for myself, but it'll be great to follow this biggrin.gif

Already have a good idea of what could be near the top, but I can't really pinpoint a number one so this is going to be a lot of fun following smile.gif

2006/2007 will suffer hugely. sad.gif

Posted by: Gezza Feb 9 2016, 06:55 PM

Right let's start the thread started with up to date toooons

Posted by: Gezza Feb 9 2016, 06:59 PM

100. WANT TO WANT ME JASON DERULO 879,000

Slap bang up to date with a song that just slipped in at the last minute and remains (to 04.02.16) the last song to spend 4 straight weeks at the top. It has since become his biggest selling single some 7 years into his chart career and 10 top ten hits later, quite an achievement.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 9 2016, 07:03 PM

99. BANG BANG- JESSIE J, ARIANA GRANDE & NICKI MINAJ 880,000

Still the biggest seller that Ariana Grande ever put her vocal to though of course Jessie J and Minaj have done better. It became the third chart topper for Jessie J, a second No 1 for Grande in just three months, but the first for Minaj who had been trying for 4 years before it finally happened.

Posted by: liamk97 Feb 9 2016, 07:16 PM

Oh wow, I wasn't expecting sales to be that high already! ohmy.gif 'Want to Want Me' has been so overplayed and it was generic pop to begin with, but there's something hugely appealing about it, certainly at the time of its release. 'In My Head', 'What If', 'The Other Side', 'Talk Dirty' and 'Cheyenne' are others I can say I like, plus 'Ridin' Solo' and 'Wiggle' are good when drunk out of your mind, but the rest of his discography are complete horrors, particularly the Robin S sampled track that will remain unnamed.

Jessie J is another hit-n-miss artist - 'Bang Bang' an example of the former. I can proudly say I can recite the Nicki Minaj rap. magic.gif

Posted by: Dan_ Feb 9 2016, 07:19 PM

didn't realise Want To Want Me had sold so much. Not a great start to the top 100 though I must say, the song got boring fast.

Bang Bang is quite good but all artists involved have done better.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 9 2016, 07:25 PM

To be honest I love "Want To Want Me" probably due to its 80s dancefloor leanings. His golden period will always be 09-10 in my opinion.

Posted by: Colm Feb 9 2016, 11:18 PM

I can honestly say I've never heard either of the first two songs.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 10 2016, 06:05 PM

98. HALL OF FAME THE SCRIPT FT WILL.I.AM 883,000

Proving that No 1 records can come from “The Voice” UK where the two judges Will.i.am and Danny O’ Donogue met and subsequently decided to work together. Upon hearing it Will.i.am apparently wanted it for his album but The Script held firm to their lead single but gave him a guest spot and, voila, it gave the former Black Eyed Pea his third solo chart topper but a first for the Script.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 10 2016, 06:08 PM

97. DOMINO JESSIE J 893,000

Many remarked at the time how much this sounded like a Katy Perry record, and in truth it does. The ubiquitous “deluxe version” of her debut album “Who You Are” came in late 2011 and featured three new songs of which this was one and it became her second No 1 single.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 10 2016, 06:11 PM

96. RUN LEONA LEWIS 894,000

The Snow Patrol original won’t be making the list obviously but Leona Lewis has three entries and here's the first which started out as a performance on Radio 1’s “Live Lounge” where it became the most famous cover version in the show’s history. Lewis recorded it properly the following year and it became, like “Domino”, the lead single from a re-issued debut album, this time “Spirit”. Cleverly after she performed the song on “X Factor” it was widely expected to be available online but Syco held it back to spur “Spirit” back to the top which duly happened then they finally unleased the “single” version which became the fastest selling download of all time (to that point) selling 131k in its first week.

Posted by: Haribo Feb 10 2016, 10:51 PM

Are you gonna do a 'bubbling under'?

Interesting countdown, otherwise. And as liamk97 said, sales are already so high.

We'll see haha biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gezza Feb 11 2016, 06:24 PM

95.HEY BROTHER AVICII 895,000

Narrowly failing to become his third chart topper in late 2013, Avicii did however round off his biggest year with this massive seller. Featuring the vocals of Dan Tyminski it’s very much in the same vein as “Wake Me Up” and also made the top 20 Stateside.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 11 2016, 06:27 PM

94. ON THE FLOOR JENNIFER LOPEZ FT PITBULL 900,000

Proving that J-Lo still had the potential to top the charts the “Lambada” sampling hit spent little time powering to the top back in 2011 giving Lopez her third chart topper but first in 6 years. For Pitbull it was his first taste of the top spot but he’d back there in just a few week’s time with even greater success. A reminder of when RedOne was THE producer of the time.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 Feb 11 2016, 06:29 PM

On The Floor is incredible heart.gif heart.gif

Posted by: Gezza Feb 11 2016, 06:31 PM

93. I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE SAM SMITH 900,000

One of the few Sam Smith records I can bear to hear now this is the real highlight of the album in my opinion. With a promo featuring Glee actress Dianna Agron and “Mindy Project” actor Chris Messina, it also became a top 5 hit in the USA, don’t worry though there is more Sam Smith on the way….yay

Posted by: T Boy Feb 11 2016, 06:40 PM

There is already way too much Jessie J in this countdown. Poor, brave 2006. Such good music, such poor sales sad.gif

Posted by: Taylor Jago Feb 11 2016, 06:48 PM

Hall Of Fame, Domino, Run, Hey Brother, On The Floor and I'm Not The Only One are all great!

Posted by: Dan_ Feb 11 2016, 08:03 PM

'Hey Brother' slaying wub.gif

I'm guessing there's another song of his still to come biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Also absolutely LOVE 'On The Floor'. Massive tune.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 12 2016, 08:31 PM

92. IN FOR THE KILL LA ROUX 902,000

Gaining eventual bragging rights over the songs that held it off the No 1 position (namely Calvin Harris’ “I’m Not Alone” and Tinchy Stryder’s “Number One”) La Roux eventually outstripped both of them en route to 900k of sales. Inspired by the theme from 80s cartoon series “Pole Position” it proved their biggest seller but the duo only made one album before going their separate ways, Jackson keeping the name for her solo 2014 album.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 12 2016, 08:35 PM

91. HOLD MY HAND JESS GLYNNE 903,000

Starring on 5 chart toppers in just 24 months, Glynne is undoubtedly one of the biggest chart stars of the last few years. This isn’t her highest entry (I’m sure this won’t be a surprise to most) but it was her first solo No 1 hit helped by a performance on “The Voice”.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 12 2016, 08:37 PM

90. A MOMENT LIKE THIS LEONA LEWIS 916,000

Not the highest placed X Factor coronation single obviously, but it proved a UK chart topper for Lewis following her season victory in 2006 as it had proved for Kelly Clarkson in the US series of “Pop Idol” three years previously. Selling 50,000 copies in just 30 minutes of being available and coming in at a whopping 571k in its first week, sales rather trailed off after that as you’ll note but these sales would be the envy of recent winners.

Posted by: Colm Feb 12 2016, 10:48 PM

For someone who has been following the charts for nearly 30 years it's bizarre to see so many merely large hits selling 900,000 copies. It was only the truly massive hits that got anywhere near there for most of my chart following years.

Posted by: BillyH Feb 13 2016, 12:45 AM

I think that's what's made certain recent megahits especially unbearable for me - they're not just mildly popular songs, they're some of the BIGGEST SELLING SINGLES OF OF ALL TIME, and I genuinely try and like them but they keep leaving me cold.

I remember everyone 10-15 years ago sneering at the low sales of the time and using the easy excuse of substandard music, but today I'll hear a song, think it mildly pleasant but underwhelming, and watch in utter bafflement as it zooms past a million sales within weeks and outsells almost every one of my all-time faves. Those sort of tracks are gonna make up half of the top ten I think, although it does make it extra special when a song I genuinely like does become a million seller - something extremely rare since 2013!

Posted by: Colm Feb 13 2016, 07:13 AM

In truth I have liked a handful of the recent million sellers - but there's just so many to choose from nowadays it was bound to happen.

Rolling in the Deep
Somebody that I Used to Know
La La La
Rather Be
Take Me to Church

All well played by me.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Feb 13 2016, 01:08 PM

I assume “Mr. Brightside” is still to come, amazing to consider it sold just around 35,000 copies in 2004 when it charted (briefly) at #10.

Posted by: Taylor Jago Feb 13 2016, 01:15 PM

Hold My Hand wub.gif heart.gif Also like A Moment Like This.

No it won't be here as it charted before 2006 sad.gif

Posted by: Gezza Feb 13 2016, 03:10 PM

89. SUGAR MAROON 5 916,000

Penned originally by Mike Posner for his second album, that was eventually shelved but this track was given to Levine for the Maroon 5 album after Levine expressed his desire to have the song. A hasty bit of extra production and some lyrics rewritten and it was good enough to become a Maroon 5 single with Posner providing backing vocals.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 13 2016, 03:15 PM

88. CAN'T HOLD US MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS & DALTON 919,000

It was four singles in before Macklemore and Lewis struck it big with the chart topping “Thrift Shop” but it’s the follow up (though in reality an earlier single from the pair) that turned out to be the bigger seller. It only made No 3 here but did become the group’s second US chart topper though naturally “Same Love” remains their best obviously.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 13 2016, 03:18 PM

87. LOVE ME AGAIN JOHN NEWMAN 923,000

Teaming up with Steve Booker to write is debut solo single, John Newman struck gold with this track returning him to the top just over a year after he was there courtesy of Rudimental. Booker had previously help to pen Duffy’s “Mercy” which accounts for the Northern Soul feel to the track which sent Buzzjack into meltdown for a week!

Posted by: Doctor Blind Feb 13 2016, 03:19 PM

Presumably “Sugar” is the biggest ever selling #7 hit?

I can only think of LeAnn Rimes “How Do I Live” that comes close..

I'd imagine you're right- should be up at a million within the next 24 months ohmy.gif

Love Me Again and Can't Hold Us are both great wub.gif Sugar is good aswell.

Posted by: Riser Feb 14 2016, 06:26 AM

Interesting facts about Sugar, didn't know it was originally Mike Posner's track! ohmy.gif

I was surprised at first when Can't Hold Us overtook Thrift Shop's sales, but it is a brilliant song and more likely to get continual airplay. I still hear it very often.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 14 2016, 01:30 PM

86. RUDE MAGIC 924,000

Many predicted when this song arrived in the top 40 at No 2 behind Cheryl Cole that it would hang around a lot longer than “Crazy Stupid Love” and so it proved when it deposed the track a week later.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 14 2016, 01:36 PM

85. WHERE ARE U NOW SKRILLEX & DIPLO FT JUSTIN BIEBER 925,600

The song which is popularly thought to have heralded the reinvention of Bieber into the chart dominator that he’s turned into. Composed as a piano ballad called “The Most” he sent it to production team Jack U (Skrillex & Diplo) who turned into the version we all know. Looks like that turned into one of his wisest moves career wise.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 14 2016, 01:38 PM

84. LOCKED OUT OF HEAVEN BRUNO MARS 928,000

After the success of his debut era Mars got Mark Ronson to produce the first single from his second album “Unorthodox Jukebox” and made it sound authentically like a lost Police single. It spent three weeks at No 2 here behind different chart topper each week, One Direction, Olly Murs and Gabrielle Aplin, but he ended up outselling them all.

Posted by: Taylor Jago Feb 14 2016, 01:41 PM

Where Are U Now is still awful. sick2.gif
Locked Out Of Heaven is really good though.

Posted by: Bjork Feb 14 2016, 02:39 PM

Too much of a The police copycat

Posted by: Gezza Feb 15 2016, 06:26 PM

83. HO HEY THE LUMINEERS 929,000

Another song that reaps the benefits of the long running nature of chart hits these days racking up 50 weeks of top 75 activity with only one of those weeks in the top 10. It was probably helped by an ad for E.On which ran back in 12/13 reminding us daily of the song.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 15 2016, 06:28 PM

82. I'M YOURS JASON MRAZ 932,000

So onto the biggest selling non top 10 hit of all time (for a time anyway- it’s now No 3 on that list), with 65 weeks inside the top 75 it isn’t particularly surprising that it has racked up these sales and setting new records for longevity on both sides of the Atlantic (again at the time). He almost turned the trick again with “I Won’t Give Up” which similarly peaked at No 11 and sold over 600,000 copies.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 15 2016, 06:31 PM

81. PASS OUT TINIE TEMPAH 941,000

The song that launched Tinie, picking up a BRITS award for best single and also introduced Labrinth to us who produced, co-wrote, and is here on an uncredited vocal in the chorus. Some tongue in Cheek vocals and critical acclaim saw the track effortlessly top the charts.

Some great songs so far. Can't Hold Us and Love Me Again hold particularly fond memories and Locked Out Of Heaven, Want To Want Me and Where Are U Now are great too.

Pass Out and In For The Kill heart.gif heart.gif

I'm Yours is the lesser of the two evils by Jason Mraz, at least that can sometimes be bearable unlike the other thing he did.

'Pass Out' is an absolute tune! dance.gif amazing how it sold so much really but it really was a forward-thinking and iconic song.

'Ho Hey' though manson.gif very much responsible for murdering the charts back in 2012-13 :/

Posted by: Gezza Feb 16 2016, 06:27 PM

80.BURN ELLIE GOULDING 941,000

Proving just what a reliable deliverer of hits he is Ryan Tedder gave this to Leona Lewis for her “Glassheart” album which she decided wasn’t good enough for her so Goulding picked it up. It became her first No 1 and helped launched the re-issued “Halcyon Days” into a million seller!

Posted by: Gezza Feb 16 2016, 06:30 PM

79. RADIOACTIVE IMAGINE DRAGONS 941,000

Currently the holder of the longest stay in the Billboard top 100 (87 weeks) it didn’t do too badly here either with 60 weeks on the top 75 despite never getting higher than No 12. It will probably cross the million mark at some point in the next 12 months (with streams included) making it the second biggest non top 10 hit ever.

Posted by: Taylor Jago Feb 16 2016, 06:34 PM

Burn and Radioactive are both great songs wub.gif

Posted by: Gezza Feb 16 2016, 06:37 PM

78. FEEL THE LOVE RUDIMENTAL FT JOHN NEWMAN 946,000

Debut hit from Rudimental remains their best seller, it features Mr Newman who also gets his second hit on this rundown. I always thought this was their first single but it followed “Spoons” which obviously failed to chart.

Posted by: Taylor Jago Feb 16 2016, 06:42 PM

Feel The Love is also excellent.

Posted by: liamk97 Feb 16 2016, 06:44 PM

A lot of dirge but some classics along the way too! 'Pass Out' grew lots after initially hating it and it remains one of few 2010's big hits that is still really well known to this date - I still hear it lots in the clubs and it gets a huge reception each time.

'Burn' remains one of Ellie's worst. sad.gif She really sold out on this track which meant it lost the charm of her earlier synth-poppy music and the whole delivery was just so weak.

'Feel the Love' was a shock #1 at the time and it continues to shock by being rather close to the million mark! ohmy.gif It sounded so different to anything in the charts at the time so I guess it kinda set the trend for dance for the next few years.

Posted by: Colm Feb 16 2016, 07:21 PM

Burn was where Ellie took a serious nosedive into generic big-banger. That performance is so dodgy. She has such a sweet voice, she should do songs that it suits.

Feel the Love is amazing.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Feb 16 2016, 07:49 PM

“Burn” which in some typefaces looks like bum was a big disappointment, very generic and predictably a big hit. I'm very hit or miss with Ellie really, love tracks like “Figure 8” (the last of her singles to make my personal chart Top 10), “Under The Sheets” and “Lights” but of course apart from the latter these were all commercial flops. sad.gif

“Feel The Love” I really enjoyed at the time, the D&B revival in 2011/2012 was very welcome and of course John Newman has a fantastic voice. That deserves to be here for sure!

I can't stand Imagine Dragons, sorry. Nickelback with all-over-the-place synths and a slightly less irritating lead singer.

Posted by: Colm Feb 16 2016, 07:57 PM

Harsh but fair. It sounds really 2008 for some reason.

Posted by: N-S Feb 17 2016, 04:27 PM

It's a crying shame that for all its 10 weeks at #1 and its 2000's classic status, "Umbrella" has actually sold so little.

That has happened to a lot of mid-00s tracks that are all time classics. All the Things She Said barely scraped 300,000 despite being one of the decade's best songs. Now 4 weeks on top would bag you at least 600,000 in the long run.

YES! I've always thought this!

Posted by: Doctor Blind Feb 17 2016, 04:37 PM

Unfortunate though this is, Rihanna will have 4 massive songs here anyway. There are many other 2006/7 singles that were huge at the time but won't appear here like “Hips Don't Lie” which had the 2000s 2nd best of 16 weeks in the Top 10!

“Umbrella” is just outside of the Top 100 I believe with sales of approx. 860,000 (hopefully Gezza will confirm).

Posted by: Gezza Feb 17 2016, 06:22 PM

Yes I have "Umbrella" on 872k and in position 107.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 17 2016, 06:27 PM

77. KING YEARS & YEARS 959,000

One of the biggest hits of last year (and in my opinion one of the best) “King” announced the arrival of Years & Years in the big league. The excellent “Sunlight” and “Desire” hinted at future promise and the hits started rolling after they signed to Polydor which helped to result in winning the “BBC Sound Of” in 2015.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 17 2016, 06:33 PM

76. JUST DANCE LADY GAGA 965,000

Right back to the beginning of the Gaga phenomenon with this track which launched her onto the international stage with some style. Co-written by RedOne and Akon it certainly had the credentials and coupled with the famous Gaga eye for an unusual image it saw her take advantage of the January lull to storm to the top.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 17 2016, 06:36 PM

75. GRENADE BRUNO MARS 978,000

Third UK No 1 single from just 4 releases bearing his name, yes back in 2011 Mars had an enviable strike rate at writing top notch pop tunes. This release previewed his debut album “Doo Wops & Hooligans” and made the case for a popstar with the class to hang around for many years.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Feb 17 2016, 06:41 PM

Love “King”, I thought that “Just Dance” was the weakest of Lady Gaga’s early singles but it was still ok for me.

“Grenade” is woeful, and blocking “Rolling In The Deep” from number 1 is unforgivable (even though it was an epic fail for Adele who should have released it OA/OS back in December 2010) - Adele got her revenge however by having the best selling album of the 21st Century and outselling “Grenade” biggrin.gif

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra Feb 17 2016, 06:45 PM

"King" is excellent, and "Shine" should have followed it at the top.

"Just Dance" is still fun though I'd rank the other The Fame singles (bar Eh Eh) above it.

Posted by: Taylor Jago Feb 17 2016, 06:58 PM

Just Dance and Grenade are both great!

King is an absolute masterpiece and is up there with some of the best songs ever made, in my opinion. I rank it ninth best song of all-time. Shine is also one of the best songs of 2015.

Posted by: Dan_ Feb 18 2016, 09:58 AM

Grenade is seriously awful, really good to see taste prevailed and Rolling In The Deep outsold it eventually.

King and Just Dance are great dance.gif

I always thought King was overrated. Sounded like I Feel Better from Hotchip.

I like Just dance the most from Gaga's first 4 singles. I overplayed Pokerface.

Bruno Mars is pretty awful.

74. FORGET YOU CEE-LO GREEN 979,000

And as if to prove my point here's Mars again on songwriting duties for former Gnarls Barkley frontman Cee-Lo Green. Coming in four versions with a “clean” edit entitled “Forget You” for daytime radio, it had enough sass to assist him in a perfect start to his solo career.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 18 2016, 06:54 PM

73. BENEATH YOUR BEAUTIFUL LABRINTH FT EMELI SANDE 982,000

Combining two of the biggest stars of the year always generate a massive hit and this is no exception, co-penned between the pair and Mike Posner (again), this exploded after an “X Factor” appearance when it soared 85-1 in the wake of the programme.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 18 2016, 06:56 PM

72. CHANDELIER SIA 988,100

Written with either Rihanna or Beyonce in mind this quickly transformed into her biggest solo hit getting regular boosts from the likes of the Voice and X Factor and has now become her longest charting hit overtaking “Titanium”.

Posted by: Mack Feb 18 2016, 08:45 PM

Great countdown so far there, Gezza.

Forget You and Chandelier both very good songs in their own way, Chandelier a modern classic.

Beneath Your Beautiful was good but now quite dull.

Posted by: Taylor Jago Feb 18 2016, 10:27 PM

Beneath Your Beautiful and Chandelier are both amazing!

Forget You is great aswell.

Posted by: Dan_ Feb 18 2016, 10:37 PM

what is it with Mike Posner writing those massive hits and not having one himself for ages? well at least that's about to change, though somehow I doubt 'Ibiza' will sell upwards of 900k.

'Forget You' and 'Chandelier' are very good although both suffered a bit with overplay and being in the charts for too long.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 19 2016, 09:20 PM

71. EARTHQUAKE LABRINTH FT TINIE TEMPAH 993,000

Launching with a sale of 115k in October 2013 behind Professor Green and Emeli Sande this is the highest placed Labrinth track on the list. The mysterious choral breakdown in the middle of the track was apparently included as a dare, at least here Labrinth appears more magnanimous than Tinie was on “Pass Out” and gives the latter an official credit!

Posted by: Gezza Feb 19 2016, 09:23 PM

70. LOVE YOURSELF JUSTIN BIEBER 996,837

Never heard this one? Yes of course you have, part of the tetralogy that seem to have rebranded Bieber in late 2015 it became his third chart topper in just 7 weeks, rather from famine to feast after waiting 5 years to make it all the way. It spent 6 weeks at No 1 and only just missed out on the Christmas chart topper last year though Bieber approved, it also headed an all Bieber top 3 in January creating UK chart records in its wake. He must get Ed Sheeran in to co-write more songs for him!

Posted by: Gezza Feb 19 2016, 09:27 PM

69. JAR OF HEARTS CHRISTINA PERRI 1,009,000

Not many new acts to get to premier their debut single on US prime time TV but Perri managed to “Jar Of Hearts” used in one the dances on “So You Think You Can Dance” before she even had a record deal. Written about an ex, it has almost spent a year in the top 75 and now has sales of over a million- impressive for a No 4 hit.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 Feb 19 2016, 10:07 PM

Jar Of Hearts is an incredible and really beautiful song, so happy it is now a million seller heart.gif

Posted by: Dan_ Feb 19 2016, 10:13 PM

Earthquake and Jar Of Hearts wub.gif Both were big faves of mine in 2011, especially Earthquake but I gotta give JOH much credit for being the best piano ballad from the short period when they were a thing.

Posted by: Colm Feb 19 2016, 11:05 PM

Nice to see Earthquake doing well.

Amazing a song like that has sold that much!

68. SHAKE IT OFF TAYLOR SWIFT 1,014,000

Another piece of Max Martin gold (in part at least) “Shake It Off” announced that Swift had arrived in the “A” league of global popstars. It spent more weeks in the top 75 and indeed in the top 10 than any of her other singles and was only deprived of the No 1 spot by Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass”.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Feb 20 2016, 12:04 PM

Matt Cardigan must be coming up soon, he used to be the decade #1 back in 2010. Dark days.. !

Posted by: Gezza Feb 20 2016, 12:05 PM

67. WHEN WE COLLIDE MATT CARDLE 1,026,000

To say that Biffy Clyro fans were not entirely happy with the decision to cover the band’s “Many Of Horror” as the winning X Factor single would be diplomatic as the inevitable “campaign” started to make the original a hit over again. To be fair it did allow the song to repeak at No 8 (it was a no 20 hit first time around) so it wasn’t all bad, as for Cardle well his career didn’t do too well.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 20 2016, 12:08 PM

66. STARSHIPS NICKI MINAJ 1,028,000

By some chalk Minaj’s biggest hit combing the writing talents of RedOne and Wayne Hector to come with this stellar seller. It was only stopped from hitting the top by Gotye (itself still to come) so perhaps it was just bad timing.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Feb 20 2016, 12:11 PM

Colm is about to lose his sh*t at Nicki Minaj appearing. I still think “Super Bass” should be here instead.

Posted by: Dan_ Feb 20 2016, 12:51 PM

Starships wub.gif It was a Personal Chart #1 for me, and it's still the best thing she's ever done.

Posted by: Riser Feb 21 2016, 12:54 AM

Super Bass is soooo much better than Starships, which I thought at the time was way too pop for Nicki but I ended up really liking Pound The Alarm. I know the Starships lyrics aren't meant to be taken seriously but they're just so bad sad.gif

Naturally, everything this woman does is genius. (Kate Bush could neva). Starships is the culmination of human culture since we walked out of Africa. Since Starships we've just been marking time until society realises it has peaked and begins to tear itself apart.

65. RULE THE WORLD TAKE THAT 1,035,000

Naughty “Bleeding Love” ended up denying what should have been a sure fire No 1 for the Take That boys. It spent 4 frustrating weeks in the runner up spot (their first No 2 hit in 14 years) before giving up the fight but not before it became the 5th biggest single of 2007 and has been a regular on the playlists since.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 21 2016, 12:30 PM

64. MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE ADELE 1,036,000

A major recipient of residual sales thanks to reality talent shows, this has of course benefited due to the huge rise of stock of brand Adele. Only a No 26 hit on release back in 2008, it took until 2010 to finally make No 4 after an “X Factor” push, not bad for a Dylan album track from 1997.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 21 2016, 12:35 PM

63. SEXY AND I KNOW IT LMFAO 1,043,000

The duo’s second US No 1 single couldn’t quite replicate that feat over here but “Sexy And I Know It” did return them to the top 10 after the blip of “Champagne Showers”. It is, of course, recalled for that promo video which resulted in a parental guidance flag on youtube.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 22 2016, 06:12 PM

62. GIVE ME EVERYTHING PITBULL FT NE-YO, AFROJACK & NAYLER 1,046,000

Riding high after “On The Floor” Pitbull proved he didn’t need J-Lo to make the top of the charts with this. Co-written by the man himself with Afrojack and Ne-Yo it flew to the top on both sides of the Atlantic but it isn’t quite his biggest seller.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 22 2016, 06:16 PM

61. WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL ONE DIRECTION 1,046,132

I didn’t know who Carl Falk was before this thread but he’s been busy co-penning not only “Starships” but also the debut hit for One Direction which provided the boys with a dream start to their chart career. Not only did it hit No 1 and sell a million, it also picked up a BRITS award for best single, it remains their biggest seller.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 22 2016, 06:18 PM

60. FIGHT FOR THIS LOVE CHERYL COLE 1,052,000

Easily outpacing all her GA output Cole’s debut solo single was launched at the height of media saturation about her thanks to being the newest X Factor judge and her first marriage breaking down. It sold 292k in its first week alone though it took three years to make the million mark.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 23 2016, 06:05 PM

59. PARADISE COLDPLAY 1,058,000

Originally ineligible to chart due the “instant grat” rule, “paradise” eventually become Coldplay’s second UK No 1 single after getting a good bit of publicity on the “X Factor” final coupled with a 59p reduction on i-Tunes which attracted those “giftcard week” buyers (remember when that was a thing?).

Posted by: Gezza Feb 23 2016, 06:12 PM

58. BAD ROMANCE LADY GAGA 1,064,000

Aah Gaga mania- remember that? The combo of Gaga and RedOne usually resulted in magic and this was no different, lead single from the “Fame Monster” it came with a typically eccentric promo which summed up all the reasons why we loved her. Following an X Factor performance the track grabbed a few weeks at the top at the turn of the century.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 23 2016, 06:16 PM

57. LET IT GO IDINA MENZEL 1,086,000

Here we are then with the biggest selling non top 10 hit and the only one to shift a million copies. Composed specifically with Menzel in mind for the Disney film “Frozen”, the song has spent 63 weeks in the top 75 including 34 weeks in the top 40 despite only making No 11 on the weekly charts.

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra Feb 23 2016, 06:18 PM

Let It Go outselling so many #1's. laugh.gif So weird.

Absolutely fantastic wub.gif

Posted by: Doctor Blind Feb 23 2016, 06:26 PM

“Bad Romance” remains Lady Gaga's best single (and probably the only critically acclaimed one), I love the early 90s hoover synths and the video was brilliant too. It also came at the epitome of Gaga-mania and fame with that X-Factor performance and the follow-up “Telephone” also making #1. Amazing to think how massive she was now.

I also liked the OA/OS release where its chart run went: 14-10-11-8-5-3-{1}

Cheryl Cole could neva.

Posted by: Dan_ Feb 23 2016, 09:44 PM

Eww at Idina Menzel's existence in this thread. And in general.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 24 2016, 06:50 PM

56. SING ED SHEERAN 1,089,000

Inspired by a night out in Vegas and taking inspiration from Justin Timberlake, “Sing” became Sheeran’s first UK chart topper with the help of some penmanship from Pharrell. It served as the introductory hit to “x” which went on to become the 2nd biggest album of the decade to date.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 24 2016, 06:52 PM

55. TIMBER PITBULL FT KE$HA 1,094,000

Pitbull’s biggest seller and a song which was originally meant to have Rihanna on vocals but she was busy recording a duet with Shakira to oblige. So it fell to Ke$ha who got her second No 1 single whilst Pitbull got the hat-trick, it has 16 co-writers according to Wiki!

Posted by: Gezza Feb 24 2016, 06:55 PM

54. HOLD BACK THE RIVER JAMES BAY 1,095,600

Off the back of picking up the “Critics choice” award at the BRITS last year Bay scored it big with this single. It originally looked as though it would peak at No 18 in late 2014 but with the necessary publicity it soon re-entered the charts only being denied the top spot by Jess Glynne.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 25 2016, 09:03 PM

53. FIREWORK KATY PERRY 1,099,000

The “Teenage Dream” era remains Perry’s most successful producing five US No 1 singles including this one, it only made No 3 here peaking lower than either “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream” but outselling both easily.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 25 2016, 09:06 PM

52. CRAZY GNARLS BARKLEY 1,100,000

Receiving heavy BBC radio support and used on their TV ad before release, “Crazy” of course created chart history by becoming the first song to make No 1 despite only being available on download back in 2006. It ended up retiring after 9 weeks at the top, the longest stint since Wet Wet Wet back in 1994.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 25 2016, 09:09 PM

51. BLEEDING LOVE LEONA LEWIS 1,109,000

Taking just 3 weeks to become the biggest selling single of 2007, this track held on to the year end to become the first single by a UK female soloist to become the biggest selling of any year in chart history. Co-written by Ryan Tedder for Jesse McCartney’s album “Departure” it was rejected by his record label and got offered to Lewis who promptly took it to the top on both sides of the Atlantic.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 26 2016, 06:30 PM

50. USE SOMEBODY KINGS OF LEON 1,114,000

Prior to 2008 Kings Of Leon had received critical appreciation but had met only with middling single success and unspectacular album sales. Of course “Only By The Night” changed that and made them, briefly, one of the biggest names in the charts, this track spent over 70 weeks in the top 75 peaking at No 2 behind Leona Lewis’ “Run” which it eventually outsold (it rests at No 96 here).

Posted by: Gezza Feb 26 2016, 06:32 PM

49. DON'T YOU WORRY CHILD SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA FT MARTIN 1,126,000

For a chart act with just over 2 years in existence Swedish House Mafia scored 6 top 20 singles from 6 releases, none bigger than this which was their final single and first UK No 1. It was spurred on the news that the group would dismantle following a final tour and melodically borrows from Milky’s 2003 single “Be My World”.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 26 2016, 06:36 PM

48. WHAT DO YOU MEAN JUSTIN BIEBER 1,136,429

Becoming his first chart topper in both the UK and the US, Bieber really arrived in the pop “A list” in UK terms last year with this smash. It was a slight departure material and production wise and naturally came with a new image in an attempt to break him to a new audience, it seems to have worked.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Feb 27 2016, 09:30 AM

Incredible to think that Kings of Leon have 2 million sellers, and that is genuine million-sellers not just from a streaming top-up.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 27 2016, 11:19 AM

47. SORRY JUSTIN BIEBER 1,152,594

And how it worked! Here he is again with his second million seller in a row, “Sorry” played second fiddle for a few weeks to Adele’s “Hello” before taking charge itself thanks to two promo’s doing the rounds for the track. Bieber roped in Skrillex on production and co-writing duties to deliver what is, in my opinion, his best work to date.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 27 2016, 11:23 AM

46. DIAMONDS RIHANNA 1,157,000

Silly Sia giving her finest work away, in truth Rihanna probably generated a bigger paycheck than she’d have got had she have released it herself. It became Rihanna’s 7th UK chart topper and her 12th Stateside and gave her the perfect start to the “Unapologetic” era.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 27 2016, 11:26 AM

45. ROLLING IN THE DEEP ADELE 1,163,000

Narrowly missing out on becoming Adele’s first chart topper thanks to Bruno Mars and his “Grenade” (where’s that now eh?- Well No 75 to be exact), few predicted what it would do for Adele as it launched her into an international popstar, perhaps the biggest one at present. It also cracked the US market becoming her first chart topper over there.

Posted by: Iz~ Feb 27 2016, 12:16 PM

Incredible to see Use Somebody and Don't You Worry Child as high as the top 50, I wouldn't have called it for either. The success of the latter still pleases me to this day.

Posted by: N-S Feb 27 2016, 08:35 PM

So this means that roughly one third of all the million selling singles come from these last ten years.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 28 2016, 02:55 PM

44. LEAN ON MAJOR LAZER FT DJ SNAKE & MO 1,166,000

Or Diplo by another name. Offered to Rihanna and Nicki Minaj in a slightly slower arrangement and rejected by both, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, it was denied the top slot by Jason Derulo (No 100) and is apparently the most streamed song ever on Spotify to date.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 28 2016, 02:59 PM

43. SEE YOU AGAIN WIZ KHALIFA FT CHARLIE PUTH 1,191,000

Penned specifically for the late actor Paul Walker as tribute, and featured in his last film “Furious 7” it sold 193k in its first week in 2015, a total bettered only by Adele’s “Hello”. It gave both acts their first taste of chat topping glory and topped the US charts for an impressive 12 weeks.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 28 2016, 03:02 PM

42. ONLY GIRL IN THE WORLD RIHANNA 1,202,000

Much like MAGIC (No 85) debuting at No 2 behind a Cheryl Cole record is actually a pretty good thing, here “Only Girl” played second fiddle to “Promise This” before taking the reins selling over 350k in just 21 days. Signaling an evolution to her sound it was one of three tracks in the top 10 for her simultaneously in December 2010.

41. CHASING CARS SNOW PATROL 1,205,000

Dear God I’d forgotten how long “Chasing Cars” spent in the charts- a whopping 111 weeks in the top 75 alone with only 210k of these sales coming in the year of release 2006. It spent 17 weeks in the charts before being excluded as the physical CD was deleted, once the charts allowed for digital release only to count it re-entered at No 9, it was also the last song ever to be played on “Top Of The Pops”.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 29 2016, 06:31 PM

40. POKER FACE LADY GAGA 1,208,000

More electro-pop from Gaga’s classic era, the song has a long winding climb to the top taking 10 weeks to make it, the longest continual run of the year. Dealing with bisexuality it boasted another instantly memorable promo which helped the track become the biggest selling single of 2009.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 29 2016, 06:35 PM

39. LA LA LA NAUGHTY BOY FT SAM SMITH 1,211,000

Getting a grant from the Prince’s trust coupled with winning £44k on “Deal Or No Deal” helped Naughty Boy to get himself started in the business but all he had to show by 2009 was a No 36 single “Phat Beach”. That year however he helped to produce and write Chipmunk’s “Diamond Rings” which led to some hits with Emeli Sande with whom he was due to write material for his debut album. As Sande was on tour he wrote some songs with Sam Smith and together they (along with others) came up with this, the first No 1 for both acts and a million seller to boot.

Posted by: T Boy Feb 29 2016, 07:59 PM

Nice to see Chasing Cars here since there's not much from the glorious year that was 2006. It's such a fantastic song that so many went off due to overplay and that lengthy chart run. Still love it personally.

38. ALL ABOUT THAT BASS MEGHAN TRAINOR 1,212,000

Co-penned by Trainor this was offered to both Beyonce and Adele as she was without a contract at the time. Needless to say they turned it down and as soon as Trainor got a deal this was polished up to become her debut single, it hit the top in the US and became the first single here to make the top 40 on streaming “sales” alone. The digital release saw the song fly 33-1.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 1 2016, 06:19 PM

37. WE ARE YOUNG FUN FT JANELLE MONAE 1,214,000

A song that did little until it was covered by Glee then licensed for use in a car advert that aired during the Superbowl which sent the song to the top in the US for 6 weeks and garnered attention worldwide. In the UK release was delayed until April 2012 and initially charted 7-3-3-3-5-2 before finally overcoming Rita Ora to steal a week at the top.

36. LOVE ME LIKE YOU DO ELLIE GOULDING 1,214,000

Goulding’s second No 1 was of course written for the soundtrack to the film of the moment “Fifty Shades Of Grey”, originally intended for Demi Lovato it eventually wound its way into the path of Goulding thanks to the director of the film knowing Goulding through her contribution to the “Hunger Games” soundtrack. Goulding was, apparently, not keen on doing the song preferring to focus on working on that third album, good job she changed her mind.

Damn never knew LMLYD was meant for demi as much as i love both ellie and her version off it would still be intrigued as to how demi would have done as she sounds gorgeous on skyscraper probably wouldnt have been as popular as ellie tho

it was also the last song ever to be played on “Top Of The Pops”

Not quite true - this was (according to Wikipedia) the last live performance on a weekly show, on the penultimate weekly show (the final weekly show was all archive performances). There have of course been Christmas & New Year shows with live performances since then.

Chasing Cars is magnificent wub.gif La La La, All About That Bass, Love Me Like You Do and We Are Young are all fantastic, and Poker Face is also great.

Tove Lo is one of the writers of Love me Like You Do, wonder why she didn't keep it for herself... or maybe they thought she wasn't a big name yet...

35. GHOST ELLA HENDERSON 1,221,000

Ryan Tedder’s been a busy man according to this thread! Here he is again helping Ella Henderson launch her career with a bang. Henderson finished 6th in “X Factor” not a position known for generating chart topping acts (even Chico finished 5th) but she bucked the trend even overturning a disadvantage to 5 Seconds Of Summer in its second week to keep the top slot. And of course it gave Buzzjack the poster known as Mirror Man. Joy.

34. PRICE TAG JESSIE J FT B.O.B 1,233,000

Jessie J is not in this game for the money- OK?!!! Well if you believe the lyrics to “Price Tag” then that’s the truth, her third show on this survey is also the third of her chart toppers here and by far the biggest. It was largely expected to cede the top spot to “Born This Way” but defended its crown easily until a BRITS performance by Adele saw it off.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 2 2016, 06:21 PM

33. THE A TEAM ED SHEERAN 1,234,000

Right back to the beginning for Sheeran here with his debut track about drugs and prostitution. Written after he did a performance for a Homeless charity the title is a reference to class A drugs which Sheeran wanted to put a more “subtle” angle on, it was for a while his biggest seller…..

Unfortunately their lead singer went on to be a significant part of one of the worst songs to ever have existed the following year. If anything, fun. or Nate not having another hit since is still not enough karma to make up for that atrocity.

Posted by: Taylor Jago Mar 2 2016, 08:11 PM

Ghost and The A Team are both masterpieces, and Price Tag is great aswell.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 3 2016, 06:58 PM

32. ROAR KATY PERRY 1,239,000

After helping to pen “Price Tag” Dr Luke also had a hand in Perry’s 4th UK chart topper “Roar”. “Teenage Dream” had been such an overwhelming success for her that much was expected from the next campaign and sure enough this track got her off to an excellent start, shame that it under performed by producing just 2 top 20 singles. This single was previewed by three trailers on youtube which included her ceremoniously burning emblems of her previous album campaign.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 3 2016, 07:01 PM

31. HELLO ADELE 1,252,000

Launched with a 30 second trailer in a commercial break during “X Factor” this sent social media into a whirl and the song was delivered just 5 days later taking 332k sales in its first week and taking 8 weeks to sell a million. As a first new single in over 4 years it was bound to make a splash but few predicted the scale.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 3 2016, 07:05 PM

30. PARTY ROCK ANTHEM LMFAO FT GOONROCK & LAUREN BENNETT 1,273,000

Welcome to the top 30, now get shuffling. With a video parodying the film “28 Days Later” and using an interpolation of the Rick Ross single “Hustlin”, it topped the charts for a month on its way to a million sales. It was the second chart topper for them after David Guetta used a sample and gave them credit on “Getting Over You”.

Thread will resume on Sunday folks!

Posted by: Gezza Mar 6 2016, 03:22 PM

29. BUDAPEST GEORGE EZRA 1,276,000

Essentially Ezra was supposed to be travelling to Budapest to perform but never made it due to a hangover so wrote this love song and titled it after the city. Appearing as a free track on his EP “Did You Hear The Rain” before it took off in Europe causing his UK label to push it as a single which eventually broke him in the UK peaking at No 3 with parent album “Wanted On Voyage” similarly becoming a million seller.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 6 2016, 03:27 PM

28. LOVE THE WAY YOU LIE EMINEM FT RIHANNA 1,277,000

A collaboration between Alex Da Kid and Skylar Gray, she penned the chorus about her relationship with the music industry before getting the track pitched to Eminem who wrote the chorus changing it thematically into a tale of domestic abuse. He wanted Rihanna to sing the chorus which naturally led critics to say that it was really about their high profile previous relationships. Either way it was the best seller of 2010 despite never reaching No 1, a feat never before achieved, helped with a promo featuring Hollywood stars Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 6 2016, 03:29 PM

27. POMPEII BASTILLE 1,278,000

Not many songs have been penned about the fall of Pompeii so i’m pleased that it gives some variety to the countdown. Their first top 20 hit it entered the charts at No 2 behind Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” but that has yet to cross the 900k mark illustrating just who won the war.

Posted by: Colm Mar 7 2016, 03:06 PM

Bizarre to see Pompeii above Love the Way You Lie.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 7 2016, 05:35 PM

26. GANGNAM STYLE PSY 1,284,000

If someone needed a physical demonstration of what “going viral” or “internet sensation” meant then you could do worse than point them to this track. Singlehandedly opening the UK market to K-Pop and creating a phenomenon of its own PSY created one of the big hits of 2012 stealing a week at the top. It became the first promo to log 1 billion views on youtube, yet subsequent releases have yielded lesser rewards.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 7 2016, 05:39 PM

25. HALLELUJAH ALEXANDER BURKE 1,293,000

The only X Factor coronation single to become the best seller of a year, Burke’s version of “Hallelujah” sold an impressive 576,000 in its first week, and well over 900,000 by the time 2008 came to an end. In protest at the cover a campaign was launched to get another cover of the Leonard Cohen track to No 1 by Jeff Buckley, that ended as the festive No 2 spot behind Burke with the Cohen original at a lowly No 36.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 7 2016, 05:42 PM

24.IMPOSSIBLE JAMES ARTHUR 1,297,000

And whilst we’re on the subject of coronation singles from X Factor winners here’s the daddy of them all (just), James Arthur’s victory in 2012 saw him move 489k in week one and in just 5 weeks he crossed the million mark. Naturally it’s a cover, this time of a 2010 Shontelle No 9 single which was once earmarked by Cowell as a possible Cher Lloyd single, imagine that!

Posted by: Gezza Mar 8 2016, 06:54 PM

23. JUST THE WAY YOU ARE BRUNO MARS 1,335,000

The first song in chart history to make number one, drop out of the top 3, then return to the top in one continuous chart run, this was also Mars’ first solo single though he had reached the top earlier in 2010 on B.o.B’s “Nothin On You”. Its return to the top was facilitated by Matt Cardle’s cover on the X Factor that week which spurred 116k purchases the week after.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 8 2016, 06:57 PM

22. TITANIUM DAVID GUETTA FT SIA 1,381,000

The 54th (approx.) release from Getta’s “Nothing But The Beat” album, this is by far the biggest of them! Guetta’s 5th No 1 in 3 years, he was churning out top 10 singles effortlessly. Sia recorded the demo before Guetta offered it to Katy Perry, Mary J Blige, and Alicia Keys who either turned it down or did demo’s but, in the end, he went back to Sia’s original vocal which he used on the finished product without Sia’s knowledge who was less than impressed apparently.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 8 2016, 06:59 PM

21. COUNTING STARS ONEREPUBLIC 1,386,000

After their initial two singles went top 5 it’s fair to say that OneRepublic’s UK chart career waned badly though naturally Tedder’s writing skills were still sending acts scurrying up the charts. “Counting Stars” changed all that, never a stellar seller on a weekly basis it managed to overturn a midweek lead by The Vamps to make No 1 outpacing them by a mere 1,150 copies before dropping to No 3 the following week then back to No 1 by a much healthier margin.

20. STAY WITH ME SAM SMITH 1,403,000

Opening with the same sale of 108k that previous single “Money On My Mind” obtained, this was Smith’s third chart topper in a year and he was well on the way to becoming one of the biggest chart stars of the year. Written about a one night stand the song’s writing credits were altered in early 2015 after Lawyers were involved and Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty were added to the list when similarities to Petty’s 1989 single “I Won’t Back Down” were noted- oops.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 9 2016, 05:43 PM

19. CALL ME MAYBE CARLY RAE JEPSEN 1,411,000

A hit first in her native Canada, the song leaped into international fame when Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez tweeted about the track then starred in a lip synched video for the track which naturally got millions of views. An international contract followed and “Call Me Maybe” became a worldwide smash

Posted by: Gezza Mar 9 2016, 05:46 PM

18. WAVES MR PROBZ 1,427,000

Originally a hit in some European countries (including No 1 in Belgium) in 2013 it was taken by remixer Robin Schulz and transformed into an international chart topper a year later, a trick he was to repeat later in that year with Lily Wood’s “Prayer In C”. It spent two non-consecutive weeks at No 1 after Calvin Harris’s “Summer” rudely interrupted it.

17. I GOTTA FEELING BLACK EYED PEAS 1,437,000

Gaga aside, no-one quite generated sales in 2009 quite like these guys, they spent 26 weeks at No 1 in the US and also grabbed a hat-trick of UK chart toppers throughout the year. None were bigger than “I Gotta Feeling” which become the first song to sell a million downloads as it finished the year as the second biggest seller, it was also a handy paycheck for co-writer and co-producer David Guetta.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 10 2016, 07:42 PM

16. SEX ON FIRE KINGS OF LEON 1,439,000

90 weeks in the top 75 tells its own tale, but “Sex On Fire” is the song that catapulted KOL to international headliners. A three week chart topper it returned to the top 10 almost exactly a year after it was released following a cover by Jamie Archer on X Factor, somewhat surprisingly it failed to make the top 50 stateside.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 10 2016, 07:45 PM

15. WE FOUND LOVE RIHANNA FT CALVIN HARRIS 1,473,000

Even a midweek release couldn’t stop this slamming into the No 1 position upon release, it opened the US market to Harris who produced and wrote the song, and gave Rihanna her 6th UK chart topper helping to launch the “Talk That Talk” era. It was apparently offered to Nicole Scherzinger first who rejected it before Leona Lewis had the option to record it but it was eventually handed it to Rihanna to turn into commercial gold.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 11 2016, 05:51 PM

14. LET HER GO PASSENGER 1,510,000

Charting at No 2 in November 2012 in Holland, the appeal of this seemed to grow gradually throughout early 2013 eventually reaching the same position here in May of that year behind a track still to come! It’s only the 4th biggest non number one on this survey somewhat incredibly despite selling an astonishing 1.5 million.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 11 2016, 05:55 PM

13. SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW GOTYE FT KIMBRA 1,551,000

A chart topper in Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, and Holland in late 2011, the song went on to greater success topping the US charts for 8 weeks in 2012 and over here for 5 weeks and running out as the best selling single of the year. It has a rather large sample of “Seville” by Luiz Bonfa to thank for part of its allure, and though he’s never confirmed who, Gotye has stated that a “high profile” female vocalist was originally intended to sing Kimbra’s part but pulled out at the last minute.

Posted by: Steve201 Mar 11 2016, 10:08 PM

Kimbra was a perfect vocalist for me. This track showed for me how OAOS could be prolific!

Posted by: Gezza Mar 12 2016, 11:14 AM

12. MOVES LIKE JAGGER MAROON5 FT CHRISTINA AGUILERA 1,553,000

After working with each other on the first season of “The Voice” USA, Levine and Aguilera teamed up for this song which despite spending three weeks at the top in the US, spent an agonizing 7 weeks consecutively at No 2 behind 6 different No 1 singles, the longest such stint in 17 years. It eventually outsold all those chart toppers and just when it finally topped the midweek charts it was beaten at the death by “We Found Love” despite having a 3 day head start.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 12 2016, 11:17 AM

11. CHEERLEADER OMI 1,569,000

Just outside the top 10 then with one of last year’s biggest hits, a No 1 hit in Jamaica in 2011 Omi signed to Ultra Music in 2013 who sent the demo to a few producers to remix it for an international audience. Felix Jaehn got the gig and it was a hit over Europe before Simon Cowell snapped up UK distribution rights and the song opened at No 2 for a fortnight before overcoming Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” and spending a month at the top.

Posted by: dandy* Mar 12 2016, 11:03 PM

10. TAKE ME TO CHURCH HOZIER 1,570,000

Spending its first 15 weeks on release in the top 50 despite never making the top 20 for that period, once Christmas and New Year were out of the way however the song sprinted to 4 weeks at No 2 behind “Uptown Funk” and “Love Me Like You Do”. In the US it similarly peaked at No 2 this time behind Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space”.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 13 2016, 01:55 PM

09. GET LUCKY DAFT PUNK FT PHARRELL WILLIAMS 1,637,000

And here’s the song that held Passenger off. No-one saw the revival of Daft Punk happen in 2013, they had met Nile Rogers back in 1997 and promised to work together though it never happened until early 2013 when they created this track with the help of Pharrell Williams. When it premiered it was immediately picked up radio and even on two days of sale debuted at No 3 before flying to No 1 for a month before taking just 61 days to sell a million. For Pharrell it was just the start of his 2013!

Posted by: Gezza Mar 13 2016, 01:58 PM

08. WAKE ME UP AVICII 1,686,000

Of all 2013’s massive hits there were none that opened with the kind of numbers Avicii generated, a fantastic 266k in its first week and over 800,000 by the time it left the top 2. It was his second chart topper of the year and was melodically composed by himself and Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger when they needed a singer and lyrics, Avicii only knew Aloe Blacc in L.A at the time as he was already working on some tracks for the singer and a phone call later Blacc had provided the lyrics and his vocals though he went uncredited.

Though I expect nothing less for the most influential dance song of our generation.

Wake Me Up I always thought as awful.
I listened to Get Lucky during the week and it wasn't as tired as I expected.
Take Me to Church is still one of my favourite songs of the decade.

07. SOMEONE LIKE YOU ADELE 1,713,000

Pinpointed by some as the moment that Adele went into the stratosphere in terms of her career, of course that BRITS performance saw the track leap 47-1 with sales of the performance merged with the album version. That rise overturned a midweek advantage to “Born This Way” and gave Adele her first No 1 single, it spent a month there before dropping to No 2 only to return after the song was performed on Comic Relief.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 14 2016, 05:29 PM

06. ALL OF ME JOHN LEGEND 1,761,000

Spending 19 weeks in the top 10 this track felt like it was NEVER going to leave the charts at one point with 54 weeks in the top 40. It was by far the biggest thing he ever did, though praise be to Aloe Blacc who held him off the very top of the chart, the song was dedicated and written about his then fiancé Chrissy Teigen whom he married days before the promo was shot and which features clips of their marriage.

Posted by: Steve201 Mar 14 2016, 09:31 PM

All of Me would have made a fitting no1 here as it got more chart show complaints than any other lol

05. BLURRED LINES ROBIN THICKE FT PHARRELL WILLIAMS & TI 1,808,000

More Pharrell, this time coming up with the rather suggestive “Blurred Lines” which caused some controversy over its lyrics in the first instance and over its copyright infringement later. It took just 8 weeks to pass the million mark and finally outpaced “Get Lucky” to become the biggest seller of 2013

Posted by: Gezza Mar 15 2016, 05:39 PM

04. RATHER BE CLEAN BANDIT FT JESS GLYNNE 1,900,000

Recording the highest weekly total for any single in January in 18 years, 162k copies were downloaded for this track on its way to the 1.9 million mark. It also introduced us all to Jess Glynne who has since become a chart regular, not bad considering this was the group’s fourth release (though the album was not available yet)

Posted by: Gezza Mar 15 2016, 05:40 PM

Top 3 tomorrow when we conclude folks!

Posted by: Chez Wombat Mar 15 2016, 06:20 PM

Daft Punk, Hozier and Clean Bandit are my favourites in this top 10, if you'd told me at the turn of the decade that they'd sell well over a million I'd have been a bit shocked. All remain fantastic songs <3 I sense Buzzjack will be very happy with whoever's won thinking.gif

Posted by: Gezza Mar 16 2016, 05:43 PM

03. THINKING OUT LOUD ED SHEERAN 1,959,000

A simply astonishing 79 weeks in the top 75 gives you some indication of just how big this track is, 2014 was already shaping up to be a great year for Sheeran but this track really cemented his place at pop’s top table. It took 19 straight weeks on the chart to finally make the top before becoming the first record to remain in the top 40 for 52 consecutive weeks, not bad for a single which wasn’t planned as a single (the record label wanted “Photograph” as the third release) but the song took off at radio and the video featuring “So You Can Think You Can Dance” contestant Brittany Cherry seemed to capture the public imagination.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 16 2016, 05:45 PM

02. UPTOWN FUNK MARK RONSON FT BRUNO MARS 2,281,000

Two songs which have now acquired 2 million UK “Sales”, first up Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” a song whose UK Release was brought forward after an “X Factor” cover by Fleur East helped to create extra buzz for the track. It took 8 weeks to power over the million mark by which time it was still at No 1 since its release bar a solitary week at Christmas when it gave way to the X Factor release, and then became the biggest seller of 2015. Like “Blurred Lines” it’s been in trouble with the lawyers having to add members of the Gap Band to the writing credits after it got a bit too close to “Oops Upside Your Head” in its composition.

Posted by: Gezza Mar 16 2016, 05:48 PM

01. HAPPY PHARRELL WILLIAMS 2,365,000

Written by Pharrell for Cee-Lo Green the chart fortunes of “Blurred Lines” and “Get Lucky” had changed its direction as he was offered the chance to record his own album. Included in the “Despicable Me 2” film, it spent three separate spells at No 1 (the first song to do so in 57 years), gave Williams a third million seller within a 12 month period (the first act since the Beatles to do so), and sold its millionth on its return to the top for a third time post a BRITS performance. It is the best selling single of the millennium and the best seller of the Buzzjack Era!!

Pharrell Williams and his hat at #1 cheer.gif

Mark Ronson makes a great #2 as well, both songs really define this decade well and were deservingly massive hits.

I'm very surprised to see Rather Be above Blurred Lines - that seemed to be a lock-in for top 3. Incidentally its the only one of the top 5 that holds any appeal for me.

Happy doesn't even deserve half of its sales. SLY is the best song in the top 10.

Do you know how many songs did over 800k since 2006?
