With the World Cup drawing closer, it’s time to take a look at the people who defined the sport with our Ultimate Footballer contest. We’ll be seeing which footballers we think are the best, pitting the greats against each other to see who Buzzjack crowns as our Ultimate Footballer!

It’s Semi-Final time now – we received 78 nominations in total, which have been randomly allocated into 3 groups of 26 (note ‘randomly’ – if all the best have been stuffed into the same semi it’s not my fault). Ten players from each group will advance through to the Final. It’s now time for you to vote – you can vote for up to 15 players, but you MUST vote for at least 5. Please make your order obvious (or at least obvious enough for us to know what you’re on about).

Group 1
Tony Adams
Michael Ballack
Billy Bremner
Gianluigi Buffon
Eric Cantona
Ashley Cole
Johan Cruyff
Eusebio
Steven Gerrard
Ryan Giggs
Joe Gormley
Emile Heskey
Glenn Hoddle
Ray Houghton
Roy Keane
Paolo Maldini
Gerd Muller
Pavel Nedved
Manuel Neuer
Michael Owen
Pele
Ronaldinho
Paul Scholes
Bastian Schweinsteiger
Ian Wright
Dino Zoff

It could be argued that Tony Adams wasn't quite as good as Pele but it would be too predictable if we all put Pele in first place.

Results:

11 Paolo Maldini 47 pts
12 Roy Keane 35 pts
13 Michael Owen 34 pts
14 Tony Adams 33 pts
15 Ian Wright 32 pts
16 Dino Zoff 29 pts
17 Gianluigi Buffon 28 pts
18 Manuel Neuer 26 pts
19 Michael Ballack 15 pts
20 Pavel Nedved 13 pts
21 Billy Bremner 12 pts
22 Bastian Schweinsteiger 9 pts
23 Ashley Cole 5 pts
24 Emile Heskey 5 pts
25 Ray Houghton 0 pts
26 Joe Gormley 0 pts

So we lose a few decent players in this first semi, but that's the nature of the competition. In fact, everyone from 12 downwards was out of the running anyway, the Top 10 being a close-run 11-horse race, with Maldini just being pushed out in the last vote, a mere 2 points behind 10th place. Following them is Irish-great-turned-commentator Roy Keane, followed by three English greats and two Italian goalkeepers, a German goalie just behind them in Neuer. More recent English players Cole and Heskey get 5 points apiece, and with Steve not here to vote two of his Irish choices receive nul points.

Which brings us to our Top 10, in alphabetical order:

Eric Cantona
Johan Cruyff
Eusebio
Steven Gerrard
Ryan Giggs
Glenn Hoddle
Gerd Muller
Pele
Ronaldinho
Paul Scholes

Pretty good results there although Maldini should 100% be in ahead of Hoddle laugh.gif

Same here would swap Hoddle for Maldini there.

Quite a surprise in Glenn Hoddle going through.

You've still got time to vote in Semi 3! (which has quite a chunk of your nominations in)
