Thanks Mikey, I'm guessing Shayne Ward could be the next act to do it, or another X-Factor act?

Ronan Keating was at number 1 with When You Say Nothing At All in the same week as he was number 1 in the album charts with By Request with Boyzone.

Is he the only artist to be number 1 in both charts as a solo act and as part of a band?

Good question.

John Lennon has also achieved that, albeit posthumously.

Wow this thread has been resurrected just ahead of it's 10th birthday! birthday.gif
I might try to add an update from 2006 to the present day. One thing that occurs to me though is that prior to 1978 the album chart for any given sales week was announced a week later than the singles chart for the same period, and that is why when this changed there were two album charts with the same date at one point that year (I forget exactly which date), so that would need taking into account for these stats, and I've no idea what the turn around was for the Melody Maker and NME album charts prior to Record Retailer charts, or whether the RR album chart was always a week delayed or whether this just came into effect with the BMRB and it's sales diaries in 1969. Perhaps I'm over thinking things though.

I was going to ask, if any act's number 1 single wasn't from the number 1 album, but then I noticed The Beatles, as Sgt Pepper I believe had no singles released from it.

Strictly speaking the title track did eventually come out as a single, but over ten years later and it didn't get to Number One. Or the Top 40 at all in fact.

These are the ones I think where the single wasn't on the album:

26/01/1961 4 Elvis Presley G.I. Blues // Are You Lonesome Tonight?
01/06/1961 4 Elvis Presley G.I. Blues // Surrender
05/10/1961 1 The Shadows The Shadows // Kon-Tiki
24/05/1962 4 Elvis Presley Blue Hawaii // Good Luck Charm
24/01/1963 1 The Shadows Out Of The Shadows // Dance On!
09/05/1963 6 The Beatles Please Please Me // From Me To You
12/09/1963 5 The Beatles Please Please Me // She Loves You
05/12/1963 1 The Beatles With The Beatles // She Loves You
12/12/1963 5 The Beatles With The Beatles // I Want To Hold Your Hand
02/04/1964 3 The Beatles With The Beatles // Can't Buy Me Love
16/07/1964 1 The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones // It's All Over Now
10/12/1964 1 The Beatles A Hard Day's Night // I Feel Fine
17/12/1964 4 The Beatles Beatles For Sale // I Feel Fine
18/03/1965 3 The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones Vol.2 // The Last Time
29/04/1965 2 The Beatles Beatles For Sale // Ticket To Ride
23/12/1965 4 The Beatles Rubber Soul // Day Tripper / We Can Work It Out
26/05/1966 1 The Rolling Stones Aftermath // Paint It Black
19/07/1967 3 The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band // All You Need Is Love
20/12/1967 2 The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band // Hello Goodbye
05/02/1972 2 T Rex Electric Warrior // Telegram Sam
20/05/1972 3 T Rex Bolan Boogie // Metal Guru
16/08/1975 2 The Stylistics The Best Of The Stylistics // I Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)
10/09/1977 1 Elvis Presley Elvis Presley's 40 Greatest Hits // Way Down
09/05/1981 2 Adam and The Ants Kings Of The Wild Frontier // Stand And Deliver
21/11/1981 2 Queen Greatest Hits // Under Pressure
23/03/1985 2 Phil Collins No Jacket Required // Easy Lover
21/12/1991 2 Queen Greatest Hits II // Bohemian Rhapsody /These Are The Days Of Our Lives

Interesting that Queen have done it with

1) Bohemian Rhapsody and its parent album
2) A Greatest Hits set which includes BR and a single not on that album
3) BR and a Greatest Hits set which doesn't include the song

Is there any value in looking at artists that had simultaneous number 2 single/number 2 album for multiple weeks? Has anyone held the number 2 in both charts for 4 or more weeks?
