Top 40 Chart Commentary

As this chart takes into account streams from Christmas Eve and Christmas Day we still have a lot of festive songs here, all of which will probably drop out next week so that should be a very interesting chart. At number one for a second week is 'All I Want...' by Hurts, just ahead of Wham! who climb to #2 following the unfortunate news of George Michael's death. Leona Lewis falls to #3, The Pogues return to the top 5 at #4, and The Waitresses are up to #5 - a new peak for them. Shakin' Stevens also peaks this week at #6, and a few others outside the top ten continue to climb and peak.

Clean Bandit remain the top non-festive song, and if they can keep that for next week they'll climb to #1 and get their second #1 hit following 'Rather Be'. They are this week's #8.

NVOY dropped down to #41 last week with 'Make You Mine'. It jumps back to #23 this week and should make next week's top ten. Other re-entries come from Lily Allen from the festive effect with 'Somewhere Only We Know', back at #26. Also Jax Jones re-enters at #38 with 'You Don't Know Me' and Röyksopp re-enter at #39 with 'Never Ever'.

The week's highest top 40 new entry comes from Ryuichi Sakamoto with 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence'. It was sent as a BJSC entry earlier this year but with it being a Christmas song it makes more of an impression this month. It climbs 21 places to #25 this week.

Jonas Blue's latest single 'By Your Side' after 8 weeks bubbling under finally enters the top 40. It does so at #37 and it should gain significantly next week. TheFatRat also gets another top 40 hit with 'Prelude', at #40 this week. Originally an interlude of his EP, it recently gained a VIP edit increasing the length of the song which puts it in the top 40.

It's such a great song, especially relevant for this year... bring on 2017 already!!

Not a huge fan of Kelly, Matt's song is great though; a big improvement for X Factor winners singles.
I do love Christmas songs, although I've stopped listening to them now so they'll all disappear in next week's chart

Matt Terry's singles is great, one of the best winners singles in recent memory
Mariah Carey is a classique! can't argue with that really.

It's a bit depressing for a Xmas song but I love it
The Boney M song is a bit of a choon, at least it re-enters the top 100 now from streaming.
Mike Oldfield is really underrated I feel, good tune there.
