Nothing takes the past away, like the future In the closest race yet, with only one vote separating those up for the chop, we lose Nothing Really Matters. The 5th and final single released from the album it is Madonna's lowest charting single to make the Billboard Hot 100. This was mainly due to a lack of airplay, but it did become a hit in other countries including in the UK where it went top 10. A simple song on the surface, pleasantly optimistic and with a lovely message. The chorus is simple, especially with its lyrics, but this does make the song very universal. It is another of Madonna's songs to detail her relationship with her first daughter, Lourdes and it combines the optimism and pure love she has for her daughter with issues of selfishness. This duality is an interesting mix and makes the song one of Madonna's most personal ever. The music video is sensational - it remains one of her most celebrated and widely-appreciated visual projects particularly with her kimono which later featured in a Grammys performance of the song. Designed by Jean Paul Gaultier and with a look inspired by the 1997 novel 'Memoirs of a Geisha', the music video features Madonna as a Geisha and is a powerful exploration of the song's themes. One of her most underrated singles, it just misses the top 5 for this album! Deadline: Wednesday evening~ 06. Nothing Really Matters (6 votes, 35.29%) 07. Skin (5 votes, 38.46%) 08. Swim (10 votes, 62.50%) 09. To Have And Not To Hold (9 votes, 52.94%) 10. Candy Perfume Girl (11 votes, 55.55%) 11. Shanti/Ashtangi (11 votes, 64.71%) 12. Little Star (9 votes, 45.00%) 13. Mer Girl (10 votes, 50.00%) |

Not surprised to see 'Nothing Really Matters' as the first single out - even though it means a lot to me, I can see why it would be considered the least good out of the singles. I adore the whole "nothing takes the past away, like the future" part; simply put but so effective and poignant and there's something so special about the melody and the way she sings it.
'Drowned World/Substitute for Love' again for me, although I must point out that, despite voting for it these past few rounds, I'm not disappointed at other tracks leaving in place of it because the album is so strong and I adore this track too. |

Nothing really matters wasn't pushed in the USA because radio stations started playing Beautiful Stranger instead (I think).
