This looks like a pretty good and varied semi! I find it pretty amusing that Are Friends Electric and Freak Like Me (the song that samples it) are in the same semi too!

Posted by: King Rollo Jan 21 2019, 09:19 PM

I like both songs but I'll be annoyed if Sugababes finish above Tubeway Army.

Small number of forum members voted in the first round, so 23 points was enough.

Aw the deadline totally slipped my mind sad.gif will make sure to vote in the other rounds!

Posted by: King Rollo Feb 4 2019, 03:02 PM

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. Digitalking's vote after the deadline means that one song which had a place in the final has been overtaken by one of the songs he voted for. I have decided not to include his vote as I don't think it's fair that a song in a qualifying position at midnight should miss out on the final. I hope that Digitalking and everyone else is OK with this decision. I will reveal which two songs were involved at the end of the results.

Results

The 25 singles with the most points are through to the final. This week,I will countdown the 26 songs that didn't make it.

51. Dana - All Kinds Of Everything 25 pts

Writers - Derry Lindsay,Jackie Smith
Top points - Good Old Days 25

This is the only song to receive points from just one person. It won the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest with Dana representing the Republic of Ireland despite coming from Northern Ireland. She finished ahead of Mary Hopkin (2nd for the UK) and Julio Iglesias (4th for Spain). Dana later went into politics, running for the Irish presidency in 1997 and 2011 but failing on both occasions.

Sorry I forgot about this as well, I meant to do it last night but I got a little distracted. I'll still try and vote in the other semis.

50. The New Seekers - You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me 28 pts

Writers - Tony Macaulay,Geoff Stephens
Top points - Good Old Days 24,King Rollo 4

This was no.1 for a single week in 1974 with Lyn Paul singing the lead vocal. Two years earlier, the New Seekers finished 2nd in the Eurovision Song Contest with 'Beg,Steal or Borrow'. The group are still going but only Paul Layton remains from this line-up. Lyn Paul recently starred alongside Will Young and others in the musical 'Cabaret'.

49. Pussycat - Mississippi 40 pts

Writer - Werner Theunissen
Top points - Good Old Days 18,King Rollo 13,coi 8

This was voted through to the semi-final by Common Sense who didn't vote this time. It still managed to pick up points from 4 people which is not surprising as it's a fine song. It's one of several country music no.1s from the 70s/early 80s. Pussycat were a Dutch group which included the three Kowalczyk sisters. They split up in 1985. 'Mississippi' was written way back in 1969 and was number 1 for 4 weeks in 1976.

Posted by: Popchartfreak Feb 4 2019, 07:07 PM

oops I missed this thread somehow, sorry!

I like all 3 of those going out! That said there are least 30 songs that would have got my points ahead of them. There are also no songs in the list that I don't like, I think..... biggrin.gif

(just checked - Err Rage Against The Machine which wasnt an actual chart-topper as such, it was anti-X-Faxtor vote, and maybe Cheryl Cole isn't quite up to the same amount of like as others)

48. Tina Charles - I Love To Love (But My Baby Loves To Dance) 55 pts

Writers - Jack Robinson,James Bolden
Top points - dobbo 20,PeteFromLeeds 13,King Rollo 6

If you're of a certain age,you may remember those cheap compilation albums of current hits which were cover versions by session singers and musicians. They sold in huge amounts with some of them getting to number 1 on the album chart. People were quite happy just singing along to them even though they weren't the original recordings. Before her big break with this song,Tina Charles was one of the singers on these albums, having to impersonate whichever female singers were in the top 10. 'I Love To Love',another chart topper from 1976, picked up points from eight different voters. Pocket rocket Tina is still performing and recording.

47. Bucks Fizz - My Camera Never Lies 72 pts

Writers - Andy Hill,Nichola Martin
Top points - Good Old Days 23,Uls2000 19,King Rollo 14,AH Gold 14

We finally leave the 70s with this one from 1982. It was Bucks Fizz's third and final number 1 and is one of many good songs from them. They are the third act to feature today that won or finished second in Eurovision. I would recommend the follow up to this one,'Now Those Days Are Gone' if you haven't heard it,a really beautiful song.

Wow, the bottom five were all from the 1970s! No major losses though, it must be said. It's a little shame to see Mississippi out so early but it's no different from what I was expecting.

46. Queen - Innuendo 93 pts

Writers - Freddie Mercury,Roger Taylor
Top points - King Rollo 25,marcinjaro 19,dobbo 19

Queen's third no.1 and their longest single, about half a minute longer than 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Steve Howe from Yes was visiting Queen's studio in Montreux and ended up playing Spanish guitar on the song.

Posted by: King Rollo Feb 5 2019, 06:37 PM

45. Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine 107 pts

Writers - Norman Whitfield,Barrett Strong
Top points - Nimbus 22,vibe 21,jimwatts 19

The oldest song in this semi-final,recorded in 1967 and getting to no.1 in the UK in 1969. The first version of the song to be released was by Gladys Knight & the Pips, reaching number 2 in the USA.

Posted by: Jason Feb 5 2019, 06:57 PM

Innuendo is a special song really, we couldn't hear another song like that at number 1 in the UK charts.
That Marvin Gaye is just meh, definitely not my cup of tea.

Innuendo is absolutely class, always gets overlooked amongst their better known songs (despite it being a #1) but it's an epic track.

Grace Kelly will go down as one of the most memorable #1s of the noughties imo, I still really enjoy it.

Under Control is such a bland track in both of Calvin's & Alesso's discog.

41. Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name 123 pts

Writers - Tim Commerford,Zack de la Rocha,Tom Morello,Brad Wilk
Top points - Dircadirca 25,coi 22,Chez Wombat 21

The Christmas no.1 from 2009,famously finishing ahead of X Factor winner Joe McElderry after an internet campaign to stop the winner from being the Christmas no.1 for the fifth year in a row. It also broke the record for most downloads in a week. The single reached number 25 when it was first released in 1993 and Bruno Brookes played the uncensored version on the top 40 show on Radio 1 prompting 138 complaints. He was recording an ad for the next week's show while it was playing and was therefore unaware of what was happening.

40. The Police - Message In A Bottle 130 pts

Writer - Sting
Top points - PeteFromLeeds 23,coi 20,ImTheLine 19

The Police's first no.1 and one of many great chart toppers from 1979,it's possibly the best year for number 1 singles.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Feb 6 2019, 07:31 PM

I mean at least Killing in the Name beat Shout Out to My Ex but still...:/

39. Blur - Beetlebum 131 pts

Writers - Damon Albarn,Graham Coxon,Alex James,Dave Rowntree
Top points - Dircadirca 24,Jester 24,dandy 22

From 1997,the second of Blur's two number 1s. One thing it has in common with the last song, for me anyway,is a misheard lyric. It sounds like Damon is singing "p*** off" several times. In the Police song,it sounds like Sting is singing "a year has passed since I broke my nose".

Posted by: Jason Feb 6 2019, 07:47 PM

Hmmm Blur's good era. happy.gif

Writers - Camila Cabello,Jeffery Williams,Frank Dukes,Brittany Hazzard,Ali Tamposi,Brian Lee,Andrew Watt,Pharrell Williams,Louis Bell,Kaan Gunesberk
Top points - danG 21,Jason 20,ImTheLine 20

This is the most recent single in the first semi-final,no.1 for 5 weeks towards the end of 2017.

Men At Work are doing really well to stay in.

37. Tubeway Army - Are 'Friends' Electric? 133 pts

Writer - Gary Numan
Top points - King Rollo 24,coi 19,Chez Wombat 16

I'm really gutted this didn't go through. I expected my 25 pointer 'Innuendo' not to qualify but I thought this one might make the final. It's another song from that great year for no.1s,1979,staying there for 4 weeks. The Tubeway Army name soon got dropped and subsequent records, including another number 1,'Cars',were released under Gary Numan's own name. 'Are 'Friends Electric' was a truly groundbreaking record at the time and finishes below the song by the Sugababes that sampled it.

Posted by: coi Feb 7 2019, 07:07 PM

Very disappointing that 'Are 'Friends' Electric?' has finished below 'Freak Like Me' but I guess we should have seen it coming.

Posted by: King Rollo Feb 7 2019, 07:08 PM

36. M|A|R|R|S - Pump Up The Volume/Anitina (The First Time I See She Dance) 133 pts

Writers - Martyn Young,Steve Young
Top points - AH Gold 24,PeteFromLeeds 22,ImTheLime 14

This scores the same amount of points as 'Are Friends Electric?' but wins a tie-break by 13 votes to 12,not that it really matters. MARRS was a collaboration between the group Colourbox and the duo A.R.Kane. The various versions of 'Pump Up The Volume' contain samples from 29 records including 'Roadblock' by Stock Aitken Waterman who obtained an injunction which held up distribrution for a few days. I don't remember the other A side 'Anitina' being played on the radio much but I have just listened to it. It's quite different and doesn't appear to contain any samples.

Writers - Listenbee,Stefan Gordy,Skyler Gordy
Top points - danG 25,PeteFromLeeds 24,Jason 22,M477h3w 22

From 2011,this spent four weeks at no.1 and is the best selling single of all time in Australia. Its video is one of the 50 most watched music videos on youtube.

34. Men At Work - Down Under 141 pts

Writers - Colin Hay,Ron Strykert
Top points - Scene 25,ready for it 24,ImTheLime 24

And talking of Australia, this is probably their best known song. It was no.1 there in 1981 but wasn't an international hit until 1983. Men At Work were the first Australian act to be no.1 on the singles and albums charts both in the UK and the US at the same time. They had three other top hits here, the best of which is 'Overkill' which I prefer to 'Down Under'.

33. Britney Spears - Everytime 141 pts

Writers - Britney Spears,Annette Stamatalatos
Top points - Alex! 25,Nick F1 24,ready for it 22,Liam 22

From 2004,Britney's fifth no.1. It has the same number of points as 'Down Under' but wins the tie-break by 12 votes to 10.

Posted by: King Rollo Feb 8 2019, 06:15 PM

32. Abba - Knowing Me Knowing You 145 pts

Writers - Benny Andersson,Bjorn Ulvaeus,Stig Anderson
Top points - Good Old Days 22,miichaelking21 22,ThePensmith 20,AH Gold 20

This is a big shock as 'Knowing Me Knowing You' finished in 8th place in the first round and yet with the qualifiers split across four semis it can only finish 32nd in its semi-final. The five people who voted for it in the first round all gave it big scores and I don't think they all voted this time and it doesn't seem to be liked enough by everyone else. Abba's fifth number 1,it spent five weeks there in 1977.

Written by the Bee Gees, who also sang backing vocals, this was Diana's second solo number 1,15 years after her first one,'I'm Still Waiting' (1971).

30. Fun featuring Janelle Monae - We Are Young 149 pts

Writers - Jack Antonoff,Jeffrey Bhasker
Top points - jimwatts 24,Jason 23,dobbo 23

A song that increased in popularity after being sung in the TV series 'Glee' and then featuring in a commercial aired during the Super Bowl. Over here,it was no.1 for just one week. Fun's next three singles charted at 7,126 and 169. For me,it's one of the best no.1s from the current decade.

29. Enya - Orinoco Flow 151 pts

Writers - Enya,Roma Ryan
Top points - ready for it 25,Campbell 22,marcinjaro 22

An unlikely number 1 from 1988,this spent three weeks at the top of the chart. Enya returned to no.1 sixteen years later as a featured singer on 'I Don't Wanna Know' by Mario Winans.

28. Martin Garrix - Animals 159 pts

Writer - Martijn Garritsen
Top points - Jason 25,coi 25,danG 23

Martin was only 17 when this reached number 1,making him the second youngest person to enter at no.1 with their debut single (second to Billie Piper). 'Animals' is one of four chart toppers with a title which is also the name of a group who have also got to no.1. The others are 'The Real Thing' by Tony Di Bart,'Survivor' by Destiny's Child and 'Wings' by Little Mix.

Thankfully "Havana", "Party Rock Anthem" and "Animals" didn't qualified in the final.
Shocked by painful result of ABBA classic. Surprisingly high position for "Orinoco Flow".

Please give us "I Feel Love" and "Dreamer" on the next two places. smile.gif

27. A-ha - The Sun Always Shines On T.V. 165 pts

Writer - Pal Waaktaar
Top points - dandy 23,King Rollo 22,AH Gold 19,Chez Wombat 19

From 1986,A-ha's only number 1. It's a shame not to see this qualify,I love the synths and the wall of sound production.

26. Cheryl Cole - Fight For This Love 169 pts

Writers - Steve Kipner,Wayne Wilkins,Andre Merritt
Top points - Alex! 23,M477h3w 21,Jason 17,vibe 17,ImTheLime 17

Cheryl's first solo single, selling 134,000 copies on its first day on sale. This is the song that would have qualified if I had included digitalking's vote after the deadline. It would have overtaken the 25th placed song 'I Think We're Alone Now' by Tiffany which finished with 174 points. I took into account the fact that 17 people voted for Tiffany's song and only 12 for Cheryl's. The good news for Cheryl fans is that she still has two singles for them to vote for.

Under Pressure
Don't You Want Me
Total Eclipse Of The Heart

Does 'Blue (Da Ba Dee)' by Eiffel 65 not count? smile.gif

It counts if you take away the part in brackets. tongue.gif

Everytime not making it is so upsetting too.

Britney Spears with Hit Me Baby One More Time or was she older?

Posted by: danG Feb 11 2019, 12:13 PM

She was also 17 (and a few months younger than Martin was if my math is correct)

Posted by: King Rollo Feb 11 2019, 01:12 PM

Yes,it seems that wiki was wrong on that one.
