The Greeks distributors delayed enough to release "Belle" in domestic cinemas. "Belle" was originally screened in the Toronto International Film Festival 2013 and it was officially released in U.S.A and U.K last year in May and June respectively. However, the Greek audience had the opportunity to watch it one month ago. "Belle" could have been nominated by the Academy Awards for many and various reasons. It seemed that it didn't quite touch the committee so that it would be a candidate even in one of the proposed categories. The same happened with Bafta and eventually I wonder if I'm the only one who found it as one of the best productions of last year.
"Belle" is based on true events although the scenario is a fictional product. The main character of the story is Dido Elizabeth Belle who grew up at Kenwood House with her uncle William Murray and his wife Elizabeth after the encouragement of her father. Her uncle was the Lord Chief Justice. Of course, she was raised with all the taboos and prejudices that existed at that time for black people and socially inferior although she faced the same discrimination by some of her relatives. However, her acquaintance with a young ambitious lawyer was decisive for doubting the crisis of her uncle on the social issues of that period. Although "Belle" could be considered by some viewers as a romantic period drama, it deals with too many ethical questions. It has to do with the equality of all people of every color, gender and economic status, with racism and social exclusion and with selfless love. It is a film with substance and content, although that could unintentionally mislead some people because the official trailer and its title. The film has pretty good directing, well written dialogues, very good performances, beautiful photography and stunning costumes. It is a remarkable production that I will rank it as one of the best of its kind. The beautiful and rising star of the film Gugu Mbatha-Raw was the best possible choice for the role of Dido Elizabeth Belle. She could have had a nomination for the Oscars or Bafta since there were many critics who wrote positive comments about her performance. I can say that I was impressed by her facial expressions, which they were exceptional in every scene. Even the second roles were quite good which shows that there was a careful selection of the cast. It is the second directorial work by British Amma Asante and anyone would have thought a more experienced director based on the amazing result we saw. Furthermore, the evolution was pleasant although there were some very touching moments while historical references were quite enlightening.
"Belle" was an artistic success but it failed to be commercial too. It might be screened to a limited group of cinema halls and for this reason, it had low worldwide revenues ($15,500,000). Though, the audience should have choosed to see this film in cinemas because “Belle” is one of those movies which are best seen on the big screen. It received good reviews from movie experts and it has amassed a pretty good score on IMDb (7.4). Personally, I would give a better score because it combined aptly a romantic story with profound messages!
