Today at 2pm there’s a chart of the 40 most played tracks from 2010-2019 on Radio 2 hosted by Scott Mills. Compiled by PPL, this chart focuses on plays across radio, TV, cinemas, clubs, pubs, gyms, restaurants etc.
This chart was last compiled 10 years ago with Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars coming out on top. Could it appear again?
I’ll reveal the Top 40 in turn with a post of the song, its video and where it peaked in the actual singles chart.
Feel free to listen along and join in with your thoughts and comments from 2-5pm
What do you think will be #1 this time around?

40. Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
Intrigued to see how similar it looks to the sales/streaming EOD.
I'm gonna take a guess that Happy will be #1 but I don't pay close attention to the airplay chart so I could be well off.
Starts at 2pm by the way.
I’m going to guess Uptown Funk, however I might be way off. Maybe an Adele song, Rolling in the Deep or Someone Like You?
It's definitely Chasing Cars. Last July it was revealed as the most played song of the century, nearly a decade after being named the most played of the 2000s.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-49008689
That either means:
1. It was played so much between 2006 and 2009 that even all the 2010s hits couldn't catch up
or
2. It continued to played so often post-2009 that it outperformed all the other songs
surely most of Chasing Cars radio plays would’ve been pre 2010? can’t see that being in this chart myself.
This will be interesting
Nearly time folks! This'll get going after the news. Those who don't frequent listening to Radio 2, there'll be a news bulletin on the hour (if they have decided to keep them in).
I'd guess Happy, but Ed Sheeran should feature a lot near the top and also Rather Be.
Hold My Hand just scraped into the EOD Top 100 but it wouldn't surprise me if it were top 40 here.
40. Natalie Imbruglia - Torn (#2 in 1997)
starting off with a song not even from the previous decade lmao
perhaps Chasing Cars will be high up then.
Torn at #40 for 2010-2019? Really? Is this just from Scott's personal last.fm or?
I don't think I've even heard Torn in the last 10 years
so that's the oldest song in the chart and the most played of the 90s
extra:
41 king
44 blurred lines
45 we found love
46 don't be so hard on yourself
48 hold my hand
49 don't stop believing
50 thinking out loud
39. Rag'n'Bone Man - Human (#2 in 2016)
Shock
Human is sounding pretty good having not heard it for a couple of years.
Surely Shape Of You will be really high on this list? And obviously a couple more Ed Sheeran tracks.
38. Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You (#1 in 2017)
Ed Sheeran not getting as much love by the radio as I thought then with this only 38 and TOL at 50!
Haha I couldn't have timed my comment better surprised this is so low down, I've literally got no clue about what's gonna finish in the Top 10 then.
Will any other Ed tracks finish higher? Maybe Perfect?
Almost always up for a bit of Mills on Radio 2 but I fear this will be Sheerageddon so I'll just follow it on here.
EDIT: Maybe not then, just seen the other comments. I have heard Shape of You hundreds upon hundreds of times, all of them against my will.
Pompeii feels like it could be here maybe
Shotgun maybe? Though it might be too recent.
(Expect that to be high up in 10 years )
37. Emeli Sandé - Next To Me (#2 in 2012)
What the heck happened to Emeli Sandé's relevance? She was omnipresent around eight years ago. Bet most people don't even know she had a third album.
36. Ella Henderson - Ghost (#1 in 2014)
yes Ella Henderson!!
I enjoyed that Emeli Sande song too. Decent chart so far.
Ghost is still such a bop
35. Train - Drive By (#6 in 2012)
oh 'yay' Train, thanks Heart.
Completely forgot this existed oops!
34. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance (#1 in 2009)
I've heard 'Drive By' before it seems, but never knew the name or that it was by Train!
33. Adele - Someone Like You (#1 in 2011)
Train ❤️
Surprised SLY is so low but RITD was the bigger airplay hit off the album for me!
Wonder if Hey Soul Sister by Train is still to come?
I heard Rolling a lot more on Radio than this so I suspect that'll be top 10 here.
32. Katy Perry - Firework (#3 in 2010)
Should have guessed some Gaga would be in there. Presumably Poker Face is still to come.
Firework ❤️ When Katy made amazing songs!
Firework is a great pop song though not as good as Roar which hopefully is still to come.
31. Justin Timberlake - Mirrors (#1 in 2013)
Mirrors is my favourite track so far but even that I'm not particularly that fond of.
'Mirrors' is class! What a pop song, was so glad this rose to no1 in 2013 after his flop first single!
30. fun. feat. Janelle Monáe - We Are Young (#1 in 2012)
Now this is the first song that I love.
'We Are Young', haven't heard this in ages!
29. James Bay - Hold Back The River (#2 in 2015)
meh at HBTR, this got too overplayed.
that Fun song is good to hear once in a while.
28. Plan B - She Said (#3 in 2010)
Hold Back The River was nothing special. She Said still sounds fresh!
Take Me To Church still to come?
no more Ed Sheeran to come then!
She Said feels very forgotten now considering how big it clearly was. not a song I go back to really, haven't heard it in a while.
27. WALK THE MOON - Shut Up And Dance (#4 in 2015)
Ugh I knew this was still to come. My local radio station seems to be playing it every time I have it on.
26. Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) (#1 in 2010)
Shut Up and Dance still sounds annoying.
Only Girl a nice refresher for the ears.
25. Kelly Clarkson - Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) (#8 in 2012)
24. Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody (#2 in 2008)
23. Maroon 5 feat. Wiz Khalifa - Payphone (#1 in 2012)
Poor Wiz Khalifa Radio 2's rap adversion rears its head
22. Coldplay - Paradise (#1 in 2012)
21. Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe (#1 in 2012)
Call Me Maybe
Easily the best song they’ve played so far.
That's now 3 2012 #1s in a row!
20. Avicii - Wake Me Up (#1 in 2013)
I'll be shocked if Don't You Worry Child doesn't appear
◢ ◤
Amazing to see this top 20, I was certainly hoping it'd make it in. A proper megasmash!
RIP Avicii.
19. Katy Perry - Roar (#1 in 2013)
What strikes me is that a lot of these songs are up-beat timeless pop songs that could've worked in almost any era, from a music & lyrics point of view.
That really is the key to a real hit. It's not about chasing a trend. The public just want a hooky melody and a catchy lyric. A lot of these songs will still be getting played in 30 years time.
Roar is another one my local station spams. I do like this one though.
18. Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne - Rather Be (#1 in 2014)
Roar is way way too high.
but at least we have Rather Be, big yes!!
17. Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars (#6 in 2006)
Chasing Cars is still amazing
Chasing Cars *_* lol at radio still spamming this so much for it to be this high.
16. Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are (#1 in 2010)
Unsurprisingly, it's probably worth mentioning that I think every single song in this chart has been on Heart's playlist at some point or other
15. Jessie J - Domino (#1 in 2012)
Had to be some Jessie J in here didn't there!
Scott said there were 2 other Bruno Mars songs to come, one of them would be quite obvious but not sure what the other is...
14. Adele - Set Fire To The Rain (#11 in 2011)
I guess so (i.e. Marry You) - was thinking of something from the next album but that seemed unlikely
13. Jason Derulo - Want To Want Me (#1 in 2015)
This Is Heart. Again.
12. Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven (#2 in 2012)
oh so it's this Bruno song here then, I forgot this existed.
Pleasantly surprised, here's that other Bruno Mars song then!
I thought Locked Out Of Heaven would be above Grenade (if that is the other Bruno song).
11. Gotye feat. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know (#1 in 2012)
great to see Gotye this high up, definitely one of the best songs of this list.
10. Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire (#1 in 2008)
I’m happy Sex On Fire is above Use Somebody as it’s a much better song but it doesn’t feel like it’s played more at all.
9. Cee Lo Green - Forget You (#1 in 2010)
Sex On Fire is more commercial!
Gotye def the best song on the list for me, such a moment when it climbed to no1!
Forget You
Always funny that 'Forget You' is more played that his biggest hit from 2006!
8. OneRepublic - Counting Stars (#1 in 2013)
Counting Stars is brilliant too
7. Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk (#1 in 2014)
I'm predicting that Someone Like You win be number 1.
6. The Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling (#1 in 2009)
Was it not top 40?
RITD for the top 3, surprised 'Uptown Funk' wasnt higher!
Oh thanks,that surprises me.
Wonder if Sia will appear in the top 5, maybe twice?
I Gotta Feeling is still my favourite song of all time!
I’m surprised there wasn’t more Emeli Sande and no Budapest.
5. Justin Timberlake - Can't Stop The Feeling! (#2 in 2016)
Yeh Mr Brightside is a good shout.
Human further down?
Wow double Justin top 40!
That's done well for a song that's only 4 years old.
urgh I knew this would be appearing high - it was unavoidable at the time.
surprised to see no Uptown Funk in the top five.
that's impressive for I Gotta Feeling despite its 2009 release as well.
and I can't see Mr Brightside making an appearance, it's not a Heart/Radio 2 staple is it?
4. Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams - Get Lucky (#1 in 2013)
I can confirm Mr Brightside is not in the Top 3
big yes for Daft Punk! let's hope they see this chart position and finally release a follow-up
My guess is Gangnam Style is no. 3.
Slightly surprised by 'Get Lucky' seems a more leftfield hit but brillant none the same. Always remember radio announcing its first plays as the biggest track of the year and it certainly was. Timeless classic.
Wonder if we will get a big 2020s comeback from them this decade? Usually only hear from them once a decade!
3. Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera - Moves Like Jagger (#2 in 2011)
OMG how could we forget the genius of MLJ?? Helped keep Maroon 5 relevant for a further decade!
Get Lucky is amazing and Moves Like Jagger is pretty decent for Maroon 5.
Rolling In The Deep vs. Happy for #1 or am I forgetting something obvious?
2. Adele - Rolling In The Deep (#2 in 2011)
Think Happy is number 1 then. A shame I got them the wrong way around
Happy is a pretty fair #1. It did seem to take over the world.
I was expecting Mr Brightside & Love The Way You Lie to appear somewhere in the top 40.
1. Pharrell Williams - Happy (#1 in 2013)
I'm surprised Despacito or Gangnam Style wasn't in this chart.
The full Top 40 is up on the first page, thanks for commenting along
Seems I was right in my guess on p1 (but wrong in just about all my predictions for this chart since!)
Chasing Cars would be my favourite out of those 40. It's the only one I have in my music collection.
Oop Despacito was from 2017 sorry! I mean Shape of You scraped in and that was the biggest song of that year so can’t really see anything else creepin in just yet
Caught the last hour of this. Conclusion I came to is that they all had cross-generational appeal, many of them were very retro (mainly borrowing from the 60s and 70s) and they probably all made the Radio 2 playlist. Am I right on the last count? No surprises at the lack of massive hip-hop streaming hits like One Dance that aren't Heart-friendly and don't fit the criteria already mentioned. Fully expecting to see Blinding Lights and loads of other songs that sound like the 1980s in the 2030 equivalent of this. People of a certain age on social media seem to LOVE Blinding Lights cos Take On Me.
Going back to my Chasing Cars prediction earlier: since it was only number 16 on this list, that means that its airplay from 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 alone was enough to make it more popular than any hit from the 2010s when the list of the top songs of the century was made last year!
Yeah most, if not all, songs were playlisted by R2. I could check as maybe one or two didn’t but it’s not necessary. Certainly the songs that have had cross-radio appeal on the big networks but also the smaller local stations are what we’ve got here, the songs you couldn’t escape on the music channels too.
A song like One Dance is going to have been let down by not having a music video I guess
It still baffles me that She Said outperformed every single Ed Sheeran song - even The A Team, which only came out 16 months later. I'm also surprised Hey Soul Sister didn't outpace Drive By.
Thinking Out Loud was at #50
I thought it would be high enough!
