Off the top of my head, this makes "Starboy" the longest running #2 peaker since "Moves Like Jagger" had a tragic 10 weeks in a row behind Adele & Gotye. As it turns out, another unlucky artist is making an attempt to amend things, as Clean Bandit's new single recently climbed to #1 on iTunes. It will probably need another week to get a chance though as James Arthur has just returned to #1 thanks to an X Factor performance, and of course there's more competition as Rae Sremmurd have quickly sailed to #2 on Spotify (behind "Starboy"). Clean Bandit's lagging behind on streaming so they'll need some work there in order to have the next #1. Presumably thanks to some physical sales, Guy Sebastian vaults up the chart again to #11, though it means that his last 6 lead artist top 50 hits have all peaked in the #11-#20 section. He hasn't had a top 10 hit in 3 years. I'm also delighted to say that 4 years after "Angels" had a lucky top 50 peak upon release, The xx have done so again with "On Hold". Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" leaves the top 100 again so "Uptown Funk" is the longest runner again, having charted for 105 weeks (in a row even). There's also an oddity which I'm attributing to the recent tag change on Spotify, which sees Starley's "Call On Me" drop completely out of the top 100 from #47 last week. The album chart as is often the case gives us a new #1. An Australian one too. Illy's been building his audience since the release of his debut album in 2009, and every album since has peaked progressively higher, with his 5th now taking the top spot. He is only the 2nd solo Australian rapper to have a #1 album, after Drapht did so in 2011. At this time of year, he's a little out of place next to a largely Christmas-driven top 10, and in fact was nearly beaten due to the news of Leonard Cohen's passing, which much like Prince earlier this year, lined right up with the start of the tracking week. His most recent album bullets up to #2 after peaking at #6 upon release, and his Essential set debuts at #12. John Farnham & Olivia Newton-John have had two #1 albums in the past collaborating on live recordings, now they team up for a Christmas album that does considerably better than Olivia Newton-John's last Christmas collaboration with a John (Travolta), as it debuts at #3. A TV interview sees Phil Collins' "Hits" collection return to the chart in a big way at #6, while Sting has his 6th top 10 album this week at #9. Brilliant rap icons A Tribe Called Quest debut at #13 with their 6th and final album, which amazingly is the first time they've ever reached the ARIA Charts. Next week we'll have the much touted battle for #1 between Metallica, Little Mix & Bruno Mars, who I suspect will land in that order. This post has been edited by Dircadirca: Nov 20 2016, 05:37 PM |

Their luck looks to finally turn around next week with "Rockabye" safely leading in sales, enough to offset their streaming disadvantage behind the other contenders. Rae Sremmurd could potentially climb to #2 but also waiting in the wings is The Weeknd whose "Starboy" is seeing a strong boost from the album release and could return to its #2 peak. It's hard to say for sure but it had a decent jump on Spotify despite the album only arriving in the afternoon in Australia. Meaning that James Arthur is looking likely to drop down to #4. This week's album release helps Bruno Mars get a boost to a new peak of #5 with the title track. Back on the X Factor, the grand final was over the weekend, and this season's winner was teenager Isaiah Firebrace, who like last year's winner Cyrus, is going under a mononym of just Isaiah. His track briefly reached #1 on iTunes but with a midweek release and lacklustre streaming (though somewhat decent for what it is), it debuts at #9 on the Digital Tracks chart which translates to #26. All previous X Factor winners this decade have reached the top 10. Robbie Williams was also on promotion duties on X Factor, and the result of that is that "Love My Life" becomes his first top 50 hit of the decade, as he hasn't seen these heights since "Bodies" and "You Know Me" in 2009. Album chart is a lot more busy than the singles chart for a few reasons. First up the big new releases. With their first non-"Lulu" album in 8 years, Metallica easily take the top spot with what I imagine are among the highest weekly sales of the year, to nab their 6th #1 album. This keeps Little Mix at #2 which is the same peak they reached with "Get Weird" last year. Bruno Mars manages a #3 debut with "24K Magic", which is his highest debut to date, though it remains to be seen if it can climb to the heights of his other two albums, "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" having peaked at #2, and "Unorthodox Jukebox" reaching #1 for 3 weeks. Local rapper Kerser pretty much releases a new album every November, and his latest one reaches a new height of #4 for him, also his 4th top 10 album. Tickets for Adele's Australian tour have just recently gone on sale and "25" sales back into the top 10, while "21" also returns to the top 50. Most noteworthy news otherwise is Australian, as Australian music's night of nights in the ARIA Awards were held on Wednesday night, with Flume being the big winner of 5 Awards including Album Of The Year for "Skin", which re-enters in the top 20. There's a slight rebound for Sia who also won several awards but was not there to receive them as par the course. Perhaps the biggest thing of note on the night was the induction of Crowded House into the ARIA Hall Of Fame, which comes just before their first live concert in 20 years tomorrow. There's been a flurry of attention towards them of late that sees their most recent Best Of compilation up to #14, previously peaking at #11. Expect another climb for them next week, and also perhaps The Weeknd getting his 2nd #1 album. |

I'm not surprised Isaiah debuted low on the singles chart, in comparison to previous winners. The whole season TXF was a mess really from a very abridged season to very low ratings. Even last year's winner Cyrus didn't do so well in the charts after his winner's single. Interestingly enough, The Voice winner's song, with its much higher ratings, only made #89 peak. Either it's the often-reasoned musical reality show fatigue and / or the songs were not that appealing to begin with.
Metallica was the clear winner on the album's chart in sales. Little Mix and Bruno Mars sold rather decently in 2016 market for their first week. |

With the singles chart, we have a song marketed to single mums replaced by a song dedicated to single mums as Clean Bandit take "Rockabye" to #1, becoming their first #1 hit. Same also applies to the featured artists, as Anne-Marie had previously reached #7 with "Alarm", and Sean Paul reached #3 with "Baby Boy", the daily struggle of Sean Paul not having a #1 single is over. So while they're the lucky party, The Weeknd gets to be the unlucky party, as "Starboy" returns for a 7th non-consecutive week at #2. Given the margin, it's entirely possible that "Starboy" could have reached #1 had it be discounted, or if "Rockabye" was not discounted. Otherwise it's a slow week in the top 10 with the same 10 songs occupying places. Peking Duk climb to #11 and next week could possibly score their 3rd top 10 hit with "Stranger"'s sales recovering. Australia also proves to be one of Milky Chance's best markets, as they belatedly score a 2nd top 50 hit with "Cocoon". They were quite unfortunate in 2014 to have "Flashed Junk Mind" peak at #51 though eventually being certified gold. The Weeknd however has luck elsewhere as he picks up a 2nd consecutive #1 album with "Starboy" just narrowly taking the top spot over Metallica's 2nd week. The impact of the ARIA Awards spread over to this chart as well, and as predicted, Crowded House's Best Of reaches the top 10 for the first time in its lengthy run. The only other debut in the top 10 comes from A.B. Original, a collaboration between indigeneous artists Briggs & Trials, who have ironically taken the name of an anti-Islam protest movement for their album title. Alongside the typical Christmas fodder, 2000s rock band The Butterfly Effect have reissued all 3 of their albums with the first 2 sneaking into the top 50. Next week, as we get further entrenched into December, the risk of Buble returning to #1 increases, so I can only hope The Rolling Stones can get there next week at least. |

This is weird to see Starley Call On Me disappeared from the top 50 despite the song (The more popular Ryan Riback remix) made top 10 on both iTunes and Spotify.

It'll be back next week. I think when Spotify retagged it a few weeks ago ARIA lost track of its streams, while still counting its sales. So this week it was essentially going on just sales (which weren't high enough to crack the top 100). Whether or not streams are counted this week, it'll be in the top 50 on the next chart, potentially top 10.

They do remain behind The Weeknd on streaming who's been #1 for 8 weeks now, but on the actual chart it's his 8th week at #2. Potentially the last week though as next week we'll have a serious challenge from ZAYN & Taylor Swift who are nearly selling double the competition on iTunes, though lack of Spotify support means a #1 debut is not guaranteed. There's also a chance in the top 10 this week, as Peking Duk's "Stranger" finally reaches it, giving them a 3rd top 10 hit after "High" and "Take Me Over" back in 2014. Also as predicted, Starley's "Call On Me" does return to the chart this week, but currently its Spotify streams aren't counted so it's only #28, while it perhaps otherwise should be #12. Maybe next week? In a rare case of streaming actually helping a new song, Childish Gambino gets his first lead artist top 50 hit with the great "Redbone". Another week, another new #1 album, this time from an artist that hasn't seen that top spot in quite some time. That would be The Rolling Stones who score their 7th #1 album with "Blue and Lonesome", their first since 1994. Unfortunately I don't see a way of avoiding a Buble #1 next week but it was nice while it lasted. In addition to singles chart success, Childish Gambino scores his first top 10 album, which I imagine would be much higher had it not been released in December. Incidentally J. Cole is #1 on iTunes currently but yet again with a December release so I'm not sure he'll even be able to manage a top 10 peak. |

I would find it strange listening to Christmas tracks in Australia when it's 30 degrees outside lol That's why they (especially on the Southern Hemisphere nation like Aus and NZ) modified the Christmas songs: lmao the Air NZ this year Christmas campaign is hilarious. |

I'll try to post more on time next week. I will note that it's Clean Bandit's 3rd week at #1, though interestingly they are not at #1 on sales or streaming individually. The latter once again goes to The Weeknd's "Starboy", which is now #2 for a 9th non-consecutive week, and the former goes to the new ZAYN & Taylor Swift track which of course lacked major streaming without Spotify. Bruno Mars belatedly gets a new peak with "24K Magic" and could do so again next week. Alessia Cara gets her first top 10 hit, and most interestingly, Frenship are holding at their peak of #17 in their 17th week on the chart. J. Cole's strong streaming gets him into the singles chart for the first (and second) time ever, and the album is also a new high for him too at #6. It is also especially interesting to note that the John Farnham/Olivia Newton-John album is the 2nd ever Christmas-related #1 album after you'll never guess what. It also puts John Farnham back at equal 5th for most #1s after Bon Jovi briefly broke ahead of him with their latest #1. The new album from Isaiah becomes the first X Factor coronation album (in this era of X Factor) to miss the top 10. |

Clean Bandit get their 4th week at #1 which means The Weeknd gets his 10th week at #2, making "Starboy" the equal longest running #2 peaker, and it's not out of the question that it'll be there again next week. Bruno Mars gets another new peak with "24K Magic", as do Peking Duk which means their 3 top 10 singles have peaks of #5, #6 & #7. Starley's "Call On Me" finally has its streams counted so it 'bullets' to #12 this week. The chart cut off date means that Mariah Carey lands slightly lower than last year, but she'll still have a decent showing next week because her streams yesterday were huge. For the first time ever, The xx manage a 2nd week in the top 50. The album chart has John Farnham & Olivia Newton-John fending off Buble again but things could swap around next week as they were quite close this week. Not much else to report as there are no debuts in the top 50 this week. Next week's chart will come in a new thread, and I'll return to this thread in a week or so to post the year end charts. Thanks again to all readers & commenters, I've really enjoyed posting this for the past couple of years. |
