Interesting! I wasn't so fussed with Waves, she's capable of better than that so I'm hoping this is great.

Ooft. Savan & ILYA? EXCITING.
I hope she can move away from just being "potential" and actually be able to capitalise on it. Everything else of hers has failed to make any kind of impact on me, except for 'Dancing With A Stranger'. Not getting much from the clip but it doesn't sound like it'll be a boring RnB song so we'll see!

So good!
It's very late noughties R&B pop. Looking forward to seeing the video!

This NMF is slaying!!
This is lush, I agree it harks back to the late 00s and there's really no better period to emulate.

THAT is a popstar video. There's something v Nicole Scherzinger - Right There meets Britney - Baby One More Time about the video!
I am FLOORED. She absolutely delivered!!!

New single and video from Normani called Motivation. Co written by Normani , Ariana Grande and Savan Kotecha .
LOVE this song and video she’s such a damn star her future is so bright !
EDIT: just seen this has been posted else where but I really don’t think this should be lumbered and tucked away in a forum that is mainly 95% to do with Camila so I hope it’s ok here !
Posted by: Mikal Aug 16 2019, 09:35 AM
She is an absolute superstar. I will be stunned if this doesn't take off.
Everything is perfect, obsessed.

I’m in love with the video, it’s a perfect homage to the early 00s

So many Celebs are stanning this and Normani in general online. She really did the damn thing !
It’s currently top 3 on US iTunes and top 20 on UK iTunes also .

I'm obsessed with this. I think it might just go on to be my favourite song of the year. It's perfect. She's perfect. Ugh. I'm SO pleased she's smashing it in the US!
Posted by: Jack Aug 16 2019, 11:47 PM

I've seen so much hype for this online, I've got a feeling this could be a big hit for her!
Posted by: RobBob Aug 17 2019, 01:00 AM
I mean, THIS is how you launch an artist. The song immediately struck me as being very good but the video elevates it to a whole other level.
THAT. STAR. QUALITY.

This is basically what Ariana SHOULD be doing instead of rehashing the same song like she kind of is now oops
Posted by: Jonjo Aug 17 2019, 05:39 AM
Agreed.
But tbf, I'm glad Normani has it as it'll mean SO much more to her and she's less likely to hate it in 3 weeks time x

I can see this being something what’s loved on here but doesn’t translate to a big chart hit.
She doesn’t have the X Factor like Camila it’ll do better in the US than her last hit did and better there than it will here.

Yeah I see what you mean about 'Check On It'! It still reminds me of something else yet, at the same time, it still feels so current! I have high hopes for this being a big hit.

The sheer amount of star-power in that video is something I haven't seen in a very long time. It's one of those videos that all popstars wish they could launch with — a moment.
The song itself is very 'Check on It' (like someone said) but it works. I really hope it translates into success but who knows these days.

Aha. I thought exactly the same thing!
I'm LOVING the reactions to this from all these famous people and seeing them support her.
The power and response she's had for women of colour just by the first 10 seconds alone (and then capitalising through the entire video) is insane! This package is so much more important to pop culture than people would believe if they just heard the song I think.
Posted by: Jack Aug 17 2019, 11:01 AM
Watching the video again and this seems like it should be a huge worldwide #01 hit. What a star! I doubt it will end up being one because of the state of the charts right now but ugh I love this so much.

Lol you can’t be serious ? Did you even watch the video ? Normani has charisma and star quality pouring out of her . I did watch the video. Idk that’s just my opinion.
I guess on this site it’ll be an unpopular one though.
I will say that she’s improved a hell of a lot since X Factor though. She was terrible during those days hence why she rarely got any solos then. She has grown a lot since then but she still not quite there yet at the moment. She’s like half way there maybes. She’s not got the whole package just yet. With Camila she just has it and always has. She’s distinctive, her facial expressions and personality and vocal and just everything to me was an instant like wow OK I’m sold.
Normani and the other three all needed to be in the band in my opinion but Camila didn’t need that platform she’s stronger on her own. 5H tanked after she left the band so she was obviously key to their success.
But I’m now going off topic here so apologies!

Definitely watch the video. I was underwhelmed at first too but then I watched the video and it just put it in a whole new perspective I think we’ve all sorely missed this kinda fun pop/R&B this decade with Beyoncé and Rihanna becoming a lot more experimental and nobody really picking up where they left off. This is where Tinashe went wrong tbh, I wanted her to do something like this and I think her career would’ve panned out very differently if she wasn’t so stubborn sticking to the “alt-R&B” sound
Posted by: Jonjo Aug 18 2019, 12:46 PM
I actually disagree in regards to Tinashe. They messed Tinashe around. Aquarius built her a fanbase that loved her Alt-R&B, but the label tried to force her into the more commercial sound of things (Player/Superlove/Flame) and they just weren't what people wanted from her/it was completely different to what brought her fans in the first place. had she stuck with a similar sort of sound but adapted a bit more I'd think she woulda been one of the first to have capitalised on this spotify-Urban-y sound and been somewhat of a success.
Luckily for Normani, as you said, Beyoncé and Rihanna aren't doing R&B pop anymore like they used to, so it's left the door right open for someone else and she's (hopefully) swooped in at exactly the right time!

Those songs didn’t completely flop, plus I feel like she acted pretty entitled. She’s a new artist, Rihanna didn’t get to just jump straight into making exactly what she wanted but she played ball with the label for a decade, made a name for herself and now she gets to release what she wants when she wants. Tinashe should know how it works, she likes to play the victim. Player is one of her few charting songs in the UK so it’s not like they didn’t know what they were doing but she made it very obvious she wasn’t into it and that’s why she is where she is now
Posted by: Klimawechsel Aug 18 2019, 06:32 PM
Really loving this! I wasn't expecting it to hit me as much as it did! There's certainly a gap in the market for a pop r'n'b hit currently and Motivation has been written really well! Not 100% if Normani has that starpower to carry on the success but the music video is very promising and with the right support she can do well!
Funny how Sam Smith and Normani collaborated on a 'decent/good' song and then next song they both give us pop bangerz.
Posted by: jakee Aug 19 2019, 12:41 AM

not enough to set it apart and cut her own as something fabulous within herself

It’s inside the UK Top 40 so far!!
Will probably just drop out by end of the week but it’s doing better than I imagined it would’ve done at this point in its release.

ik she was one of the co writers but to me it sounds like 2003-2006 Beyoncé.

Posted by: Spiceboy Sep 26 2019, 12:28 PM
Why has she had to cancel? That's really bad as it's a prime promo spot which she might not get back now. When you're building your solo career up it's kind of essential you take every opportunity!
Posted by: Jonjo Sep 26 2019, 01:48 PM
It was out of her control which sucks even more
Glad to see she plans on rescheduling and I think BBC will be more than willing to give her another slot. It's not a Jess Glynne scenario where she cancelled 10 mins before a big performance or whatever, so I can't see her being blacklisted by BBC, if it was out of her control.
Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 26 2019, 02:15 PM
That’s unlucky for her.
Out of her control is that like a visa issue or something?
Is there any news on who’s the new music guest for this week?

Hmm. Considering this was clearly meant to be her big breakout moment I'm not sure what another single is going to do. She spent about eighteen months building up a presence, featuring on Love Lies and Dancing With A Stranger and clearly there was alot of effort into launching her as a solo star with the video for Motivation and the VMA performance so it's chart performance is a huge let down.
I'd say, if anything, it haltered any momentum she built up previously. And the longer she leaves it between singles - it's already been four months since Motivation - the harder she makes it for herself.

I think the problem was literally after the VMA performance everything just went quiet . There should have been more promo more performances of the song and more of a continuous push all round . They wasted the momentum that was there . Hopefully they’ve learnt from that mistake for the next single . Either way it did a good thing of getting her name out there and a top 40 single in both the US and UK for a new artist and first official solo single is not a bad thing at all .
Posted by: Kieran. Apr 4 2020, 05:03 PM
Motivation was one of my favourite tracks of 2019. I wonder she's coming back with it? I hate this silence from her. She needs to engage with her fans more if she wants to make it tbh.
Posted by: Euphorique Apr 4 2020, 05:27 PM

Posted by: Jordan Lee Apr 4 2020, 07:12 PM
It would take a mega smash and a low key miracle for her to get another hit without having another artist who’s bigger than her on the track.
But yeah corona situation will delay it even more. Normani can’t sell a track on name alone she needs promo and playlists to help her.
Posted by: LMLou Apr 4 2020, 08:29 PM
I'm still really shocked that this wasn't bigger in terms of the chart sand sales. Almost everyone seemed to know it, the song and the video were pretty well discussed and well received, and I feel like I heard it out and about quite a lot
