Wasn’t expecting Enigma to bounce back ohmy.gif

Great to see it happen though wub.gif

My charts are a bit volatile in early 1991 due to the varying cost of CD singles, I think. I bought them when they were 99p or £1.99 and had stopped buying vinyl singles unless they were cheap 99p or under. Enigma was £2.99 or £3.99 I think so I waited till it was near the end of it's run at the top to buy it, hoping it would be on the next Now album. There's another bounce-back shortly as I got hold of a vinyl copy for cheaper-than-usual chart prices. There was a lot of chart-fixing via pricing in the 90's!

Hi Steve smile.gif It peaked at a relatively modest 16, it was one I liked a lot but never loved as much as I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe), Games Without Frontiers, Sledgehammer and Don't Give Up, so the extra run was a useful top-up on its first-run "sales" laugh.gif

17th February 1991

It's a 6th week on top of the chart for Enigma, as Robert palmer goes back up to 2 with his Marvin Gaye mash-up cover, and Ralph Tresvant gets a sudden spurt to 5 after sensitively pottering around the 20's for a while, making him the 2nd New Edition star to get a solo top 10. Chris Isaak also bounces back into the top 10 with Blue Hotel as I buy it on vinyl in order to buy Wicked Game on the B side, and a great dance track from Nomad gives me some devotion at 9.

Banderas gets a fab climb into the 20, and Lindy Leyton rockets up to 20 with a song I didn't remember liking so much! But there's the proof, I did! The Bee Gees are back with Chain Reaction, oops I mean Secret Love using the same rhythm track they used for Diana Ross, in at 23, as Twin Peaks' Julee Cruise gets a 2nd top 40 - a disturbing, but worthwhile, David Lynch show both funny and shocking. Roxette come join the Joyride, and keep the big hits coming on strong at 39, new in just ahead of Living Colour rearing it's ugly head.

Jesus Jones get a quick follow-up, Who, Where, Why? Told you who, in the charts, and because they can. Ex-Bangles lead singer, Susannah Hoffs gets a solo entry on her own side of the bed, The Byrds main-man Roger McGuinn gets his new solo track joining his classic 60's EP down the bottom end of the chart, and The Beatles have a B-side from the I Feel Fine single I bought in 1976, She's A Woman, and which featured in the movie Help!, covered by Scritti Politti, giving Green Gartside 7 years of chart entries, and The Beatles another hit song 21 years after they'd split up.

What are your longest running #1s John? It's rare that I've seen you have songs chart at #1 for as long as this.

it's a pity it didn't do much in the charts, not sure why, she's certainly the full package wink.gif

Yeah it's rare for me in my grown-up years to have long-running number ones smile.gif When I was young and more obsessive it was quite common laugh.gif As will become quite apparent when I get round to my all-time chart-sales top 200 (still working on that chart) but 6 weeks and more in total (some have more than one run):

60's

California Dreamin' The Mamas & The Papas 17 weeks (part of an EP, so 2 other tracks also feature but it was this one really)
The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore The Walker Brothers 8 weeks
There's A Ghost In My House R. Dean Taylor 6 weeks
Daydream Believer The Monkees 8 weeks (also other tracks on that EP but this was the main one)
I Was Made To Love Her Stevie Wonder 6 wks
Different Drum Stone Poneys/ Linda Ronstadt 6 wks
Last Night In Soho Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich 10 wks

all of the above were as "oldies" in later decades

these are from the start of my charts aged 10/11:

Hey Jude/Revolution The Beatles 7
Those Were The Days Mary Hopkin 9
Build Me Up Buttercup The Foundations 7
Dizzy Tommy Roe 11
Something In The Air Thunderclap Newman 7
In The Year 2525 Zager & Evans 8
Sugar Sugar The Archies 10

The 70s:

Temma Harbour Mary Hopkin 6
Ride A White Swan T.Rex 6
My Sweet Lord George Harrison 6
Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep Middle Of The Road 12 ( laugh.gif )
Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum Middle Of The Road 9 ( laugh.gif )
Imagine John Lennon 8
Metal Guru T.Rex 7
Goodbye To Love Carpenters 6
Happy Xmas. War Is Over John & Yoko/ Plastic Ono Band 13 (Christmasses!)
Love Train The O'Jays 6
See My Baby Jive Wizzard 11
Hypnosis Mud 7
Jet Paul McCartney & Wings 7
Angie Baby Helen Reddy 6
Bohemian Rhapsody Queen 6
I Believe In Father Christmas Greg Lake 10 (Christmasses!)
Mamma Mia Abba 8
Fernando Abba 6
Dancing Queen Abba 19 the winnah! 1976 and 1992 Abba Gold reissue 2 runs)
Livin’ Thing Electric Light Orchestra 6
Knowing Me Knowing You Abba 12
I Feel Love Donna Summer 7
Take A Chance On Me Abba 6
Baker Street Gerry Rafferty 9
Thank You For The Music Abba 7
Eagle Abba 8
Voulez Vous/Angel Eyes Abba 6

Bit of an Abba obsession going on there, but I knew my love was SO right... laugh.gif

The 80's

The Day Before You Came Abba 6
Billie-Jean Michael Jackson 6
Two Tribes Frankie Goes To Hollywood 6
Drive The Cars 7
Last Christmas/Everything She Wants Wham! 6 (Xmas!)
Everybody Wants To Rule The World Tears For Fears 6
The Sun Always Shines On TV a-ha 6
A Different Corner George Michael 9
Human The Human League 7
Sowing The Seeds Of Love Tears For Fears 7

The 90's:

Sadeness Enigma 6
For Whom The Bell Tolls The Bee Gees 6
Earth Song Michael Jackson 8
You Got The Love (Remix) The Source/ Candi Staton 6
Halo Texas 7
Stay Bernard Butler 6

The 00's:

Life Is A Rollercoaster Ronan Keating 6
Inner Smile Texas 7
Caught In The Middle A1 7
Harder Kosheen 6
Say It Right Nelly Furtado 6
Four Minutes Madonna/Justin Timberlake 6

The 10's:

Crossfire Brandon Flowers 7
The Flood Take That 7
Princess Of China Coldplay/ Rihanna 8
Somebody That I Used To Know Gotye/Kimbra 6
Disconnected Keane 7
Colours In The Sky Miami Horror featuring CLEOPOLD 6
I Can Change Brandon Flowers 6
Queen Of Peace Florence + The Machine 7
When You Know Robbie Williams 7
I Trance Agnes 6

Some you will recoil in horror at laugh.gif But only 6 each for the 90's and 00's. Previous decades have the benefit of second third or more chart runs, but the 90's and 21st century are in the process of extra runs (eg Javiera Mena just got a second spin on top).

Biggest uninterrupted runs?

10 weeks: Dancing Queen, Knowing Me Knowing You, Last Night In Soho

and the top one: California Dreamin' for 15 weeks on it's 1997 reissue. It was a very strange year for me, taking refuge in familiar old loves...

Yep same for me. DQ is overplayed and dare I say it John, overrated. Just a bit. Fab single still. Knocked off No.1 by my all time fave song, Mississippi.

Mississippi peaked at 2 in my chart - behind Dancing Queen I think, oops! laugh.gif For such a huge record of the time Mississippi never gets played these days, prob cos it falls somewhere between Eurocheese and Country - showing the link to Country goes back 45 years to the Netherlands, at least! Common Linnets being the more famous recent example.

24th February 1991

It's a first week on top for Robert Palmer and his inventive and classy mash-up of 2 Marvin Gaye songs, it had only taken Robert 13 years to get a chart-topper from debut - Every Kinda People will be back before long though, his first chart entry. Julee Cruise shoots up to 3 following a Twin Peaks boost, and Banderas hop up to 7 with the fab This Is Your Life, and Jesus Loves You gives Boy George 9 years of top 10's, pretty much whether he's in chart fashion of not.

Roxette keep the top 20 tracks on a joyride, and the late Del Shannon gets a posthumous Jeff Lynne-spearheaded highest new entry with Walk Away at 23. It's very Jeff Lynne, working with one of his idols, and that's always a good thing. Mica Paris is back, this time with a classy previously obscure Prince song, new at 34, Madonna's needless remix of Crazy For You brings it back into the UK charts, and the over-rated ballad duly comes back at 32 here to boot. LL Cool J is 4 years into his chart career with Round The Way Girl, Dream Warriors are in at 59 with a Donovan song title and sample, Daisy Age rap giving the 60's UK hippie folkie some much-needed and deserved street-cred.

Patsy Cline charts another early 60's oldie, I Fall To Pieces, Morrissey mentions Our Frank in passing, Debbie Gibson scrapes a 4th year of chart activity, and Rod Stewart is back with a biggie 20 years into his run, Rhythm Of The Night a Trevor Horn polished bagpipe-featuring 80's song based on Loch Lomond, a Scottish traditional 19th Century ballad. Finally The Clash's 1982 minor hit Should I Stay Or Should I Go is featured in an advert and bounces back on course for a belated UK chart-topper. But not here.

Great to see a new number one.

My favourite track in the top 10 is of course ‘3am Eternal’!! ❤️

Thanks Steve,
There'll be another new number one shortly laugh.gif KLF are The Act of 1991 for me, even considering Pet Shop Boys and my inbuilt biases. Actually I might do 60 years of Best Act Of 1960 onwards (if I count the womb months laugh.gif ) based on what was released each year and see if Pet Shop Boys grab every year they have a new album out. Or not. laugh.gif
