Is that the second Christmas in 5 years Nat King Cole was in the Christmas chart?
Always thought the other Shaky Xmas song was called ‘The Best Christmas Of Them All’! |

Hi John!
Nice to see "I Love Your Smile", "Diamonds And Pearls" and "Hole Hearted" reach your top 10, the former two are both classic songs and "Hole Hearted" is very underrated, considering Extreme is only known by a lot of people for "More Than Words". Other big gains that I like are: "Spending My Time" (lovely song from Roxette, that is underrated) and "Mysterious Ways" (classic U2). From your debuts I like "Live And Let Die" (Not a bad cover of the Wings classic) and "Too Blind To See It" (Discovered it by listening to classic AT40 shows). And of course, the return of "The Show Must Go On", needs no definition. It's a classic song, even if Freddie sadly passed away too early. A charismatic singer who inspires a lot of singers like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Kurt Cobain and lots more. Great throwback chart as always! I need to catch on to my throwback chart as well. |

Thanks for the comments and picks, sadly Freddie will be even more visible in the next chart, and yes I agree with all your comments there! Look forward to your next chart |

15th December 1991
It's 4 weeks on top for The KLF as Queen's classic former number one over late 1975 and early 1976 is back at 2 following the tragic loss of Freddie Mercury. Bohemian Rhapsody is pretty much the most-popular record of all-time over the last 40 years really, in polls in the UK, though the other new side These Are The Days Of Our Lives, hasn't yet been listed in my charts. Kate Bush is up to 3 with Rocket Man, her last big record with new material I think, given she disappeared for 15 years more or less. Meanwhile the 1987 Xmas classic from The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl is a hit again, and returns at 4, going top 5 for the second time. Amy Grant has a sudden burst into the top 10, her 2nd, and James scrape in for a 2nd too, but they'll be back, Sound. Kym Sims almost makes the top 10 in a week of big climbers and big droppers, Xmas is coming! Pet Shop Boys climb 51 places to keep the 100% top 20 record intact with Was It Worth It? U2, meanwhile, move in Mysterious Ways and add to their growing list of top 20's. REM return with an 80's flop classic, It's The End Of The World, and we all know it these days, if we let the multi-millionaires get their way. Malcolm McLaren is back with Alison Limerick, and I have no memory at all of Magic's Back! It's like, just like that, it vanished! Lisa Stansfield is All Woman, and I do recall and like that smooth soul track, but not Black Box's Open Your Eyes, though do fondly recall anything Addams Family related, even MC Hammer's adaptation of the TV theme song. 1 ( 1 ) JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT (STAND BY THE JAMM’S) The KLF featuring Tammy Wynette, Maxine Harvey & Ricardo Da Force 2 ( NEW ) BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY Queen 3 ( 5 ) ROCKET MAN Kate Bush 4 ( NEW ) FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl 5 ( 6 ) I LOVE YOUR SMILE Shanice 6 ( 3 ) BLACK OR WHITE Michael Jackson 7 ( 4 ) DO YOU FEEL LIKE I FEEL Belinda Carlisle 8 ( 51 ) THAT’S WHAT LOVE IS FOR Amy Grant 9 ( 2 ) OBSESSION Army Of Lovers 10 ( 11 ) SOUND James 11 ( 61 ) TOO BLIND TO SEE IT Kym Sims 12 ( 8 ) DIAMONDS AND PEARLS Prince 13 ( 16 ) YOU SHOWED ME Salt ‘n’ Pepa 14 ( 7 ) THOSE WERE THE DAYS Mary Hopkin 15 ( 33 ) THE SHOW MUST GO ON Queen 16 ( 30 ) EVERYBODY MOVE Cathy Dennis 17 ( 19 ) MARTIKA’S iamspamspamamiMartika 18 ( 20 ) SPENDING MY TIME Roxette 19 ( 70 ) WAS IT WORTH IT? I see that Am I Right is struggling down there at #40, I really love it and think it’s one of Erasure’s most underrated singles It's still on an upward trajectory, but I think it suffered like every under-stated xmas period release suffered in those days - people dont buy non-xmas-themed more-subtle records over Xmas and the new year starting, the charts were littered with big names bombing with classic ballad singles in those days - and that includes the biggest names like Michael Jackson (Man In The Mirror). Radio and people were too busy with xmas singles and getting over-excited to party, or post-xmas wanting to be uplifted, so they just often got overlooked. |

22nd December 1991
It's a first week on top for the classic 1987 Christmas song from The Pogues and the fab Kirsty MacColl which was held off the top spot that christmas by Pet Shop Boys and a couple of others, but 4 years on gets justice for Fairytale Of New York. Kym Sims, Cathy Dennis (her 4th) get top 10's , as do Pet Shop Boys back on top 10 form after the blip of DJ Culture, and belatedly Queen's Show Must Go On does it too, joining Bo Rap in appreciation of Freddie and almost 18 years of Queen love. New at 21, Sniff 'n' The Tears fab 1979 UK flop Driver's Seat is back, but they at least got a US hit at the time, Simon & Grafunkel's original Hazy Shade Of Winter goes top 40, Lisa Stansfield keeps them coming, Cliff also grabs a top 40 in his 23rd year of charting, and that Malcolm McLaren single I've forgotten leaps to 40. Wet Wet Wet set up 1992 with the debut of Goodnight Girl, their best record since Wishing I Was Lucky, and New Kids On The Block get 2 years of chart action with If You Go Away. Shaky returns with his latest (now forgotten) Xmas song, The Farm and Roachford add to their lists, Kiss take a rock classic (Russ Ballard's song Argent had the hit with) and bloat it beyond recognition - well, God Gave Rock 'n' Roll To You, even Kiss, who extend their brief chart career to 13 years, Zuchero returns with Randy Crawford on tow, well into her 12th year of charting on Diamante, and there's a debut for game-changing new Seattle grunge band, Nirvana, and a ditty named Smells Like Teen Spirit, which I didn't know what to make of, so much so that they debut below Kiss, that second-hand, second-rate Glam Rock wannabe. 1 ( 4 ) FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl 2 ( 1 ) JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT (STAND BY THE JAMM’S) The KLF featuring Tammy Wynette, Maxine Harvey & Ricardo Da Force 3 ( 2 ) BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY Queen 4 ( 3 ) ROCKET MAN Kate Bush 5 ( 5 ) I LOVE YOUR SMILE Shanice 6 ( 11 ) TOO BLIND TO SEE IT Kym Sims 7 ( 16 ) EVERYBODY MOVE Cathy Dennis 8 ( 10 ) SOUND James 9 ( 19 ) WAS IT WORTH IT? Pleased that KLF stayed ahead of Queen - I was so annoyed that Queen blocked them in the UK charts during January. In fact it properly plays a huge part in my irrational hatred of Bo-Rhap!

Oops you spoke too soon I wouldnt say it was irrational, this big media onslaught in the end contributed to my getting sick of a record I loved, cos it's impossible to go a month without hearing it, and often a week! KLF everyday for me....! |

29th December 1991
It's the final chart of the year, and the double A side of the nations fave record and a touching farewell from Freddie Mercury on These Are The Days Of Our Lives get Queen on top for the first time since Radio Ga Ga in 1984, and their 6th number one to date on what looked to be the end of the band. Bo Rap topped my chart in December 1975, then got booted off for Xmas by Greg Lake's unstoppably classic I Believe In Father Christmas (better than Bo Rap, sorry, not sorry) then bounced back for a week before the unstoppably brilliant ABBA dominated my charts for the next 5 years. Precious few new releases in the inbetween week, and precious few charting christmas oldies in those days (to qualify for my chart) means a stodgy chart of just 4 new entries, so desperate to get new blood even Des'Ree sneaks in, and I don't rate Des'Ree. So, highest newie is Belinda Carlisle with one single too many off the album, Half The World is OK at best, in at 60. Blue Pearl make it a hat-trick of charters, and even Jason Donovan's megamix of Joseph's Technicolour Rice & LLoyd-Webber pops in, and I'm not a fan of the musical. 1 ( 3 ) BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY/THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES Queen 2 ( 2 ) JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT (STAND BY THE JAMM’S) The KLF featuring Tammy Wynette, Maxine Harvey & Ricardo Da Force 3 ( 1 ) FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl 4 ( 7 ) EVERYBODY MOVE Cathy Dennis 5 ( 9 ) WAS IT WORTH IT? ...and that concludes 1991, it's taken me 30 years to get round to revisiting it and getting "sales" figures for it, so as soon as the remaining 1991 songs exit the 1992 charts I can compile my top 100 of 1991, and then My Top 100 of 1991 allowing for re-entries over the years since to see how removing oldies and extra sales affects the list of the Best Of.
So 1992 to complete and 1993 to add sales figures to (1993 is digital already) and I've got a complete set of Year-End Top 100's back to 1968. Then 1995 to complete, 1996 and most of 1997 to add in and I've got a complete digital spreadsheet version of all my charts going back to 1983 inclusive. Then 1980 to finish, 1981 and 1982 to do. Then 1972 to do, 1973 to revamp and revisit, 1975 to finish, 1976 to do, then 1977 and I'm complete back to the end of 1968 for everything, and 1967 if I include my Retro Chart 50th anniversary weekly revisits. The order these get done may vary And then I can start reviewing the 21st century charts which are already digital..... Told you almost 10 years ago I was a Pop Chart Freak.. A very, very, time-limited-available one..... |

Hi Alex, sadly she only had 2 - Fairytale Of New York (coming up in a moment) and Walking Down Madison - but she also wrote one for Tracy Ullman, They Don't Know, so 3 really. She had lots of contributions to other people's records though, and great records like In These Shoes, Terry, Chip Shop, Days and others that skip my mind. I loved Kirsty and was so shocked when she was killed by a moron, who got away with it too. Wihtout "New England" Who was your # 1 in that period of time ? In my chart Kirsty had at least 5 chart toppers. - There's A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis - Terry - New England - Days - Perfect Day "Fairytale Of New York" grew up for me in last two years, but still very far from my favourite her (and Christmas too) songs. Kirsty MacColl and Pogues - Fairytale Of New York (1987) (8 weeks) (Peak # 5) Chart run : 12-13-11-8-5-9-15-20 Anita Dobson - I Dream Of Christmas and Kim Wilde and Mel Smith - Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree were much more successful on Christmas 1987 in "Gražios Dainos". |

A New England was fab and is fab, it went top 5 and would have topped my chart if not for 2 oldies back (The Sweet and Soft Cell), King's Love And Pride (which I over-rated, Kirsty is much better) and the classic Dead Or Alive You Spin Me Round, so really she should have been 1 or 2. But she did chart twice more and peaked at 3 in 2013 with it, so has as many chart "sales" as an average number one from 1985 |

Loved following the 1991 charts Pop so it’s well worth posting here.
Was the new entry for Blue Pearl ‘Feel The Passion’ the original of the Amen UK track 10 years later? I always loved ‘These are the Days’ better than ‘Bo Rap’ |

Is that the second Christmas in 5 years Nat King Cole was in the Christmas chart? Always thought the other Shaky Xmas song was called ‘The Best Christmas Of Them All’! Ooops sorry Steve, missed this one somehow - yes Nat was big in 1987 thanks to Rick Astley and big in 1991 thanks to his daughter and Unforgettable. Shaky's other xmas hit was 1990, he's had a few either indirectly or directly Xmas themed, not least his acoustic revamp of Merry christmas Everyone which made me like the song again |

I always loved ‘These are the Days’ better than ‘Bo Rap’ Thanks Steve! I've never linked Amen UK to Blue Pearl so I don;t THINK they are the same song but I stand to be corrected on that! Havent heard either of them for 20 or 30 years. Days was a grower for me, while Bo Rap I loved right away, and then for 20 years or so, till I got so sick of it I don't want to hear it again for at least the next 5 years. That'll never happen, there's no avoiding it! |
