1. Metric - Doomscroller

I knew this would be my yearly #1 after a week of getting obsessed with it. Progressive, long-form tracks always have a chance of feeling special to the point where they become my favourite song from a collection because there's so much to them, but ‘Doomscroller’ does it especially well. It becoming a slight meme on here notwithstanding – I’m far too inspired to have ever considered sending it to a contest.

Metric really capture the dread of doomscrolling during unprecedented times and times of big news, especially in the first part of the song when the focus is more on lyrics. But that the song devolves into a lot of distorted instrumentation seems intentional, because that reflects the nature of doomscrolling, it starts focused and clear and then becomes muddled as things start to blur into one and as the song continues it starts to feel more like that latter stage. There’s so many stages to this song, each one more involved and hype than the last.

Plus all the somewhat ironic repeating of lyrics of ‘don’t give up now’ and ‘whatever you do, we’re gonna love you’, words with good intentions but feel hollow after you’ve spent so much time looking at the collapse of society from the front-lines of social media’s distortion of current events. Or, like with ‘Take The Bait’ earlier in my top 3, just take the message as ‘touch grass’. I like songs with that message not that I heed the advice. It truly is a song that everyone should hear and fall in love with because well, it’s a journey. Quite understandable that this was, if nothing else, this year’s song on the site where a large number of people started evangelising it to others. And I probably did that a lot. It really is that great <3

a lazy 1-50 without artists because I didn't put them in my sheet this time, but that finishes the EOY, I'm free!

and thanks for reading and commenting x, like with my idol DEMONDICE, I value an outlet and getting feelings out feels good most of all, but it's always nice to get the occasional comment too, even if most people here don't listen to the same stuff I do.
