Sharapova will make her return at the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart after her ban.

Johanna Konta through to the Perth final after beating Bouchard in straight sets and Dan Evans beat a World Top 10 player for the first time by beating Thiem to reach the semis of the Sydney International.

EDIT:

The 50,000th post on the sports forum.

Posted by: Mack Jan 13 2017, 01:03 PM

Johanna Konta has won the Sydney International by beating Radwanska in straight sets. Her 2nd WTA Tour title that will give her all of the confidence she needs for the Australian Open.

In other British tennis news-

Dan Evans is through to his 1st ATP tour final by beating Kuznetsov in three sets of the Sydney International. He faces Giles Muller in the final.

Posted by: King Rollo Jan 15 2017, 02:05 PM

Good to see Johanna win Sydney. After two weeks, she is no.1 on the points race. Dan Evans lost his final but well done for getting there.

As for the Australian Open,I can't see anyone other than Murray or Djokovic winning the mens. The womens will be more open as it always is with at least 10 players capable of winning the title.

Posted by: Mack Jan 15 2017, 08:44 PM

It will be probably most likely an Murray v Djokovic final.

It will be probably most likely an Murray v Djokovic final.

It won't be, as Djokovic is out after losing to world no 117 Denis Istomin in five sets. Wow!, a big surprise there.

I don't think Murray will have a better chance to win the Australian Open.

Posted by: Oliver Jan 19 2017, 09:42 AM

Murray v Evans final? laugh.gif

Posted by: King Rollo Jan 19 2017, 12:18 PM

A big shock that one. I thought that after Djokovic beat Murray in Doha,he would be back to his best for the Aussie Open. He loses a load of ranking points from last year so if Andy can win this or at least get to the final or the semis,he should keep the world no.1 ranking for most,if not all,of the year.

Posted by: Oliver Jan 20 2017, 10:19 AM

Andy Murray (1) bt. Sam Querry (31) 6-4, 6-2, 6-4

Dan Evans bt. Bernard Tomic (27) 7-5, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3)

Well done to both! cheer.gif

Posted by: Mack Jan 20 2017, 12:57 PM

Well done to Dan Evans with a $12 dollar non-sponsored t-shirt. British tennis looks in the best shape since quite a long time.

Posted by: Martyn Jan 21 2017, 10:56 PM

I am really rooting for Konta to win a Slam this year.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Jan 22 2017, 09:22 AM

Murray lost to Zverev in four sets wasnt what I was expecting to wake up to this morning, really leaves the draw wide open. Evans also lost to Tsgona in four sets.

Konta got a tough match tomorrow last time they played here last year Jo won 8/6 in 3rd.. If Jo can win and progress her next round likely to be Serena

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 22 2017, 11:15 AM

Can't believe what's happening at this tournament, we haven't seen the like since the 2004 French Open. Draw is wide open now, you'd have to put Wawrinka as the overwhelming favourite now.

Posted by: Mack Jan 22 2017, 08:36 PM

Could Federer do the unthinkable and win it?

Posted by: Martyn Jan 23 2017, 09:29 AM

Konta through to the quater final to face Serena.

Posted by: Oliver Jan 23 2017, 09:40 AM

Never faced each other apparently, so it'll be good to see what Konta can do. I did think Serena would win this before the tournament started but, with how aggressive Konta is playing right now, she might just get completely overwhelmed by the Brit!

Posted by: Martyn Jan 23 2017, 10:02 AM

I really hope Konta can cause an upset here. Would really cement her as a future grand slam winner and potentially a world number 1.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Jan 23 2017, 10:05 AM

Pliskova is most peoples picks in the womens draw, she's also in same half as Konta and Serena and should have an easier match next against Lucic-Baroni. I'd like to see Konta win and even get to the final she seems to of started this year with so much fire and aggression and I hope she continues. I'd love to see Venus get to the final in top half of the draw feels like year of the oldies already with Serena Venus Lucic-Baroni and Federer all 34+. Mens side I can see a Federer v Nadal final happening

Posted by: Mack Jan 23 2017, 12:52 PM

Lucic-Baroni's first Grand Slam quarter-final since Wimbledon 1999. She didn't play in Grand Slams between 2003 and 2010. A remarkable comeback from her.

Posted by: Mack Jan 24 2017, 01:04 PM

An all-Swiss semi-final with Federer taking on Wawrinka. Should be a cracking match.

Posted by: Mack Jan 25 2017, 08:40 AM

Konta out in straight sets to Serena.

Lucic-Baroni will play Serena in the semis as she reaches her first Grand Slam semi-final since Wimbledon in 1999.

Dimitrov through to semis in straight sets and will play either Nadal/Raonic.

Posted by: Mack Jan 25 2017, 01:06 PM

Nadal through to semis after a straight sets over Raonic.

6 of the 8 semi-finalists in the women's and men's draw are over 30.

Posted by: Mack Jan 26 2017, 01:09 PM

Fantastic it will be an all-Williams final and also Federer through to the final in a 5-set thriller against Wawrinka.

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 26 2017, 11:15 PM

It would be a reminiscer's dream to have Federer-Nadal & Williams-sisters finals. Looking more into it though it just highlights the lack of quality young players coming through the sport, particularly in the men's side!

Haven't been able to watch any of this yet but I'll definitely be watching both finals, would absolutely love Federer to win. Everytime he's reached the final of a Slam in recent years I've felt this might be his last time but he just keeps going!

Posted by: Martyn Jan 27 2017, 12:16 AM

I think it also shows players can play for much longer than before.

Although who in the ladies game would destroy a semi final opponent in the same way as Serena did?

Posted by: Mack Jan 27 2017, 01:50 PM

Definitely worth watching the highlights of the semi-final of Nadal and Dimitrov tonight.

I'm glad I've been proved wrong with him retiring last year.

Somehow I think Federer had his best chance his final Wimbledon title last year in that classic final with Djokovic.

I'm glad I've been proved wrong by Federer as well.

Posted by: gooddelta Jan 27 2017, 03:10 PM

Unbelivable finals here...have I fallen asleep and woken up in 2005? (as I only wish I could!)

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 28 2017, 11:24 AM

Not a classic final from the Williams sisters there, Serena just had the edge throughout. Fantastic to see her break the Open era record.

I'm really rooting for both Federer & Nadal tomorrow but I would especially love R-Fed to win it.

Posted by: Mack Jan 29 2017, 12:21 PM

The greatest tennis comeback from Roger Federer from the greatest tennis player of all time. Another 5 set epic between him and Nadal. Wow!. Roger Federer is simply the best still.

Federer and Serena Williams. It will be a long time before we see the likes of them again. Both tennis legends.

Posted by: gooddelta Jan 29 2017, 12:44 PM

Unbelievable...! First in five years, I guess most of the legends are still winning grand slam titles into their mid 30s so it makes sense.

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 29 2017, 02:00 PM

A great final too swang one way then the other, couldn't call it even in the last few games. A special win for Roger that, makes you think how much more is left in the tank but why not win a few more!

Nadal right back at the top too, surely the favourite for the French Open.

Posted by: jark Jan 29 2017, 02:03 PM

That final set was jaw dropping tennis. Both gave so much, some of those rallies were just exceptional. So thrilled for Federer! Such an utter gent.

Posted by: The Sultan Jan 29 2017, 06:44 PM

Yes well done to Federer, what a great match, Nadal was great too (nice to see them both back to reaching finals again) and yes Nadal has a great chance for the French Open.

Did anyone see Great Britain's deciding Davis Cup match against Canada where Shapovalov was defaulted from hitting the tennis ball in frustration and hitting the umpire in the eye during his match against Kyle Edmund.

I think this is the first time that has happened in Davis Cup history.

Posted by: King Rollo Feb 6 2017, 03:33 PM

Yes,I was watching. He hit the ball quite hard towards the stand and unluckily it the umpire straight in the eye. The umpire wasn't looking at him so he had no time to duck. The player was immediately remorseful but obviously had to be defaulted. Umpire taken to hospital. I hope there is no permanent damage.

Posted by: Mack Feb 8 2017, 01:26 PM

There isn't any permanent damage to his eye to the umpire following that incident.

Murray through to the Dubai Championships after beating Pouille.

He'll play Fernando Verdasco in the final.

Posted by: Mack Mar 20 2017, 01:14 PM

Roger Federer has become the oldest winner of Indian Wells by beating Wawrinka in the final in straight sets.

Andy Murray will be out of the Davis Cup quarter-final match against France due to an elbow injury. Can't see GB beating France now.

Konta the first British woman to reach the semi-final of the Miami Open. A remarkable two years she has had.

Posted by: Mack Mar 31 2017, 11:56 AM

And Johanna Konta is through to the Miami final after beating Venus Williams in straight sets. She'll move up to 7th in the world rankings following this win.

Posted by: King Rollo Apr 1 2017, 05:33 PM

I'm watching the final now. Johanna off to a good start,4-2 first set.

Posted by: Olipurr Apr 1 2017, 05:36 PM

Posted by: Mack Apr 27 2017, 11:57 AM

Sharapova wins her first match from her ban against Vinci in straight sets.

An seemingly grudge match today between Sharapova and Bouchard over comments Bouchard made about Maria Sharapova.

What do you make of Maria Sharapova returning?

Posted by: Dobbo May 8 2017, 05:48 PM

Well it was always gonna be contentious. Bouchard is just a load of hot air anyway I'm not sure who I dislike the most of out them two!

Bouchard won the grudge match but in a three hour thriller in three sets.

Johanna Konta out again in the first round of the French Open in three sets after taking the first set 6-1.

Kerber went out on Sunday in straight sets.

Posted by: Mack Jun 7 2017, 07:21 PM

Out in straight sets went Djokovic in straight sets to Thiem.

Murray through to the semis in four sets against Nishikori.

Anyone watching the French Open?

Posted by: Mikee1981 Jun 8 2017, 09:05 AM

Yeah I'm watching it, Cant see anyone beating Nadal to be honest although he seems to of had easy draw and a retirement so it all helps but Thiem will be interesting as he is only player to beat Nadal on clay this year so far!.

Djokovic totally went to pieces in their last set yesterday never seen a player go away from the match like that before, no routine like his usual ball bounces he completely gave up. Murray and Nishikori was an up down game but Murray seemed to get better as match went on, his previous two matches he played well but I think Wawrinka will beat him in the semis.

Womens side is interesting it has been so open this year, personally I dont like Halep or Pliskova and either of them being number 1 depending on who wins and how far get seems a bit void. Feels like all the slams be the same this year no Serena really seems to dampen the womens side, and Kerber is just nowhere. Sharapova I really dont care about and ideally wouldn't of returned but hopefully Azarenka and Kvitova returns will provide more spice on the womens side.

Konta I expected to go out Hsieh is a top doubles player tricky and has been highly ranked before and clay is Kontas least favourite surface but hoping she has better grass season as she is playing all the warm up events prior to Wimbledon

Posted by: Mack Jun 8 2017, 07:40 PM

Halep will face Ostapenko in the French Open final. Ostapenko the first unseeded female player to reach the French Open final since 1983.

Posted by: Mack Jun 9 2017, 07:32 AM

Can see the Murray v Wawrinka match going to five sets, I think. I think Wawrinka will beat Murray also.

We'll see what happens though.

I was right about the result,

It will be a Nadal and Wawrinka final that should be a cracker.

Posted by: Dobbo Jun 9 2017, 10:20 PM

That looked a fantastic match between Murray & Stan and although the final set seemed a bit underwhelming after the brilliance before it was more Stan playing amazing & not Murray giving up Novak-style.

Really really hoping for a Halep win tomorrow, one of my faves on the WTA and have been rooting for her to win a Slam for a good few years now. Although I do like the look of this Ostapenko girl as well who has come out of nowhere!

Posted by: King Rollo Jun 9 2017, 11:10 PM

I remember Ostapenko winning junior Wimbledon. She looks to be a very good player but I think Halep will win easily tomorrow.

Posted by: Dobbo Jun 10 2017, 08:50 PM

That was unbelievable stuff from Ostepenko today, 50 winners is crazy. I'm sad for Halep but she was blown off the court at times today.

Posted by: Mack Jun 10 2017, 10:19 PM

Ostapenko was 150-1 to win it. Very pleased that she won it.

Posted by: Dobbo Jun 10 2017, 11:46 PM

My favourite stat is that she is the first player to win their debut title at a Slam since Gustavo Kuerten 20 years prior at the same tournament, who won it the day she was born, spooky!

Rafa Nadal won his 10th French Open title Sunday....

Posted by: Mack Jun 12 2017, 07:36 AM

An remarkable achievement for Nadal in winning his 10th French Open title. I don't think we'll see someone win 10 of the same Grand Slam tournament for a long time. The 'God of Clay' he is. I'm very pleased that he has done it.

Wonder who'll win Wimbledon this year. I hope Murray gives it a good shot again, but not sure I can see it. He's looked a bit lost recently.

Jack Sock, a man whose name also happens to be an activity practised by teenage boys.

Both him & Novak are absolutely nowhere so it makes things very interesting. Wouldn't completely rule out another Rafa vs. Roger classic finale!

Elsewhere I think it's time Raonic stepped up to the mark, seems most likely to be the newest name to become a male Grand Slam winner.

He has confirmed Agassi will continue as coach in 2018.
Wants to play for another five years.

Posted by: Dobbo Jul 27 2017, 06:39 PM

Well Fed took half a season off then came back & won 2 Slams so it could prove a wise decision.

In fact, with Djok out of the picture, Murray/Nadal both on the wane atm & no new blood coming through Fed could get a few more Slams yet cheer.gif

Posted by: Mack Jul 28 2017, 12:20 PM

I'll make Federer favourite for the US Open for sure. I'll be surprised if Murray/Nadal won it. For a outside bet, probably Cilic possibly.

Two month ban for Errani following failing a drugs test.

Posted by: Mack Aug 11 2017, 12:31 PM

Andy gets to stay at No.1 for another week after Rafa's defeat - equalling the 40 weeks Nastasie is on. After all that's went wrong for Murray this year, that was my only hope - that he could beat Nasty's record.

Posted by: Dobbo Aug 12 2017, 12:48 PM

Murray has been an awful world #1 so far, it seems to be more about how long it'll be before he drops back down rather than how much he'll extend his points lead in the rankings.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Aug 15 2017, 07:52 AM

Nadal retakes number 1 from next week, Federer could of took it but has pulled out of Cincinnati. Murray down to 2, but Federer just behind

Be an interesting start to 2018 if Murray calls time on this season like Djokovic and Wawrinka have.

Posted by: Mack Aug 16 2017, 12:24 PM

Maria Sharapova has been given a wildcard for the US Open.

What do you make of this?

Posted by: Mikee1981 Aug 19 2017, 07:53 AM

Personally I dont think she should get wildcard into main, let her go through qualies if anything.. but on other hand they missing Djokovic, Wawrinka and Nishikori from mens and Serena, Azarenka and Stosur from womens and with few more withdrawing to come yet I reckon so they be needing some press

Posted by: Oliver Aug 19 2017, 09:36 AM

The US Open always gives wildcards to previous winners of the tournament. She's served her ban, they'd need to not give wildcards to any ex-winner if they were going to single out Sharapova.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Aug 24 2017, 08:00 AM

Raonic joins the list of absent top male players from US Open.

Laura Robson lost first round of qualifying as did Brydan Klein but wins for Cam Norrie, Naomi Broady and Katie Boulter

Posted by: Mikee1981 Aug 25 2017, 08:23 AM

Kyle Edmund doing well into the semi finals of Winston, good chance of a final.

Norrie, Broady and Boulter all into final Q round for the US Open playing about 4pm and 8pm UK time

Murray has pulled out of the US Open due to his hip injury.

Halep and Sharapova have drawn each other in the first round. That's going to be something.

Posted by: Mack Aug 27 2017, 09:43 PM

It'll be an intriguing match. A three setter beckons I think.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Aug 28 2017, 05:36 PM

Hev lost to Cornet, Kyle beat 32nd seed Haase and Cam Norrie beat Tursanov (Retired but led 7/6 6/1)

Posted by: Mack Aug 28 2017, 09:48 PM

Shame to see Konta out in three sets and in the first round of the US Open.

Posted by: Dobbo Aug 29 2017, 06:52 AM

Oh dear, well that's all the hype deflated yet again.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Aug 29 2017, 08:04 AM

I wasn't overly keen on some of Kontas press before the US, it sounded, the way I read it is as if she wasn't expecting much and sounded defeated before first round. It could just be total misinterpretation by me though but it was just the way I read it. Still not totally surprising Krunic won she got to 4th round 3 years ago taking out Keys and Kvitova on the way so has form.

Sharapova beating Halep was no surprise, not sure why it is even being called a shock. Its not as if Maria hasn't trained and had practice matches and played since was banned, she will of trained constant just not played big tournaments. Think Halep destined to never reach #1 she has had loads of chances but everytime does she gets beat in finals etc, I personally am not keen on her but not overly keen of Pliskova either. Muguruza number 1 would be welcomed though and earned

Ferrer seems to of had his day losing in first round and dropped down rankings a lot lately.

Posted by: Umi Aug 29 2017, 10:18 AM

What on Earth happened to Konta? I think Maria beating Halep does count as a surprise - I know a lot of people who were doubting her fitness and she is lacking in practice no matter what. Halep could have won that match.

Seen some surprise about Watson losing to Cornet but I don't at all get where that's coming from. Cornet's ranked higher and is actually competent on hard courts. Watson's never been past the first round here.

From what I can gather Jo's serve went very awol and Krunic took momentum and did what she did to Keys and Kvitova used the power to her advantage, she also thrived on the crowd who filtered in and started to fill out the court half way through the match.

Yeah Watson losing was no surprise to me either she has not beaten Cornet and Cornet is a good player, Heather always seems to do good for a few months then nothing, she seems to get going and the just hits a wall she showed a lot of potential and since winning Us Juniors hasn't won a match there since

Posted by: Martyn Aug 29 2017, 12:06 PM

Konta got to the Top 10 in the world and was there for a little bit, without getting too much press.

I think she is now getting lots of buzz and press and I am wondering if she is struggling with living up to expectations, especially after her amazing Wimbledon run this year.

Posted by: Mack Aug 29 2017, 12:20 PM

Didn't see the Sharapova v Halep match. What sort of reaction did Sharapova get from the crowd when she came out?

Posted by: Mikee1981 Aug 29 2017, 06:28 PM

Defending champ Kerber follows Halep out the Us losing 6/3 6/1 to Osaka.

I think Sharapova welcome was quite warm from what I read

Posted by: Mikee1981 Aug 30 2017, 07:49 AM

Nadal won in three although was down a break in the first set.

Federer through in five sets against Tiafoe, People said his movement wasn't fluid like normally is questioned his back injury but he said he was just nervy.

Was a washout really only main court got full play all other matches cancelled so be lots happening today

Posted by: Mikee1981 Aug 31 2017, 08:13 AM

Kyle Edmund through to 3rd round for second year running took out Steve Johnson in straight sets and his next opponent isn't the expected Tsonga who was taken out by the very talented Shapalov who beat Kyle at queens and defaulted the Davis Cup tie by hitting ball and it hitting umpire in eye.

Seeds seem to be dropping like flies on both sides yesterday...

Mens we lost: Tsonga, Kyrgios, A.Zverev, Gasquet, Muller, Cuevas, Ramos-Vimalos, Fognini
Womens we lost: Wozniacki, Lucic-Baroni, Cibulkova, Peng, Mladonovic, Pavlyuchenkova, Kontavett

Sharapova came through in three sets, bottom half of her draw opened up and reckon she will have a decent run and the mens half with Cilic in has opened up as well with Tsonga and Zverev going out

Posted by: Mack Aug 31 2017, 10:18 PM

Dimitrov out in straight sets.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 1 2017, 06:41 AM

Certainly the young pretenders shining and causing the upsets at the moment.

Berdych fell last night as well although injured. Nadal through in 4 and Federer again scraped through in 5 sets, I think he be out with a harder opponent.

Kuznetsova fell in the womens as did Strycova and Gavrilova from the seeds

Posted by: Totto Sep 1 2017, 10:30 PM

Serena giving birth to a baby girl during Venus match.

Congrats.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 2 2017, 08:02 AM

Cilic and Isner fall out of the draw as does Kyle Edmund who was battling injury at start of third set.

The highest ranked male at bottom side of draw is Carreno-Busta!

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 3 2017, 08:48 AM

Nadal and Federer through to fourth round, Federer in 3 sets easier than previous matches, Goffin, Del Potro, Thiem all through the top half of the mens draw is packed compared to bottom half.

Pliskova came through in 3 sets again, more surviving then stamping authority. Vandeweghe took out Radwanska and Kasakatina took out Ostapenko, Svitolina and Madison Keys also through

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 4 2017, 06:23 PM

Yeah I reckon thats the highlight I think Del Potro may win it he been very good lately.

Pliskova totally blasted Brady 6/1 6/0 in 46mins and Nadal just took out Dolgopolov 6/2 6/4 6/1

Goffin 2 sets down to Rublev which is surprising

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 5 2017, 07:22 AM

Well Del Potro did it came back from 2 sets down to win in 5, he even said he nearly retired in 2nd set as felt couldn't breathe, no such luck for Goffin though went out in three. Madison Keys taking out #4 Svitolina puts 4 US women into the last 8, we could in theory have an all US semi and final if they all win their Quarters

Murray's out for the rest of the season. Next time we'll see him on court is a charity match against Federer followed by Brisbane in 2018 season.

I think it's for the best, I'm not a huge fan of his but it was an utter embarrassment having him as world #1 from Wimbledon until the week before the US (and I think it's ridiculously unprofessional that he allowed himself to be seeded before withdrawing). There's going to be a huge shake up off the top ten for the year end rankings by the look of it!

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 6 2017, 05:20 PM

Loads of players are seeded and pull out either before match or after draw so Murray no different he said he felt ok the few sessions he had at least he didnt do like some and turn up first round go on court then pull out keeping prize money and he no way been an embarrassment being Number 1 from Wimbledon onwards lots of players have been number 1 and injured and hold it due to no other player having consistent enough results to put them close or have nothing to their name major (Dinara Safina rings a bell in the womens side) Murray has been unlucky getting this hip problem after achieving all he did last year. Nadal being number 1 now is basically because everyone else been injured so no real competition for him or to keep their own ranking points up by playing week after week.

In other news Vandeweghe half way into the semis took first set against Pliskova can she make it three out of four americans through and if does will Keys feel pressure of making it an all american Semi and final

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 6 2017, 05:54 PM

Vandeweghe does it knocks out Pliskova 7/6 (7/4) 6/3

Means from after US that Garbine Muguruza will be ladies #1

Pressure on Keys to make it 4/4 Americans into semi finals

Well I didn't know that to be fair, I'm not a huge fan of Murray's anyway but I guess it's decent of him to not take the money. Glad we'll be getting a new BBC Sports Personality though, hopefully Mo will take it finally #offtopic

Great for Vandeweghe! Hopefully we'll have an all-American couple of semi finals then. Rooting for Venus of all of them biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 7 2017, 06:19 AM

Del Potro beats Federer in 4 sets denying us of the Roger Nadal semi but I'd love Del Potro to go on and win.. and Madison does make it an all female US Open line up... first time since at the Us since 1981 and first time anywhere else since Wimbledon 85.

Mens Semi Finals

Nadal (1) V Del Potro (24)

Anderson (28) V Carreno Busta (12)

I think this is a perfect chance for Venus to claim her 3rd US title her last in 2001!

I'm pretty sure every women's grand slam has an all-female line up wink.gif

Really impressed with the Americans' performances! Venus really deserves to go on and win but I don't know if she'll have it in her, she completely crumbled against Muguruza in Wimbledon but the players here don't have Grand Slam final experience so hopefully she can do it!

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 7 2017, 03:42 PM

haha it was early and I was half asleep when I typed that.

I really do hope Venus wins it, Sloane is in great form after a long 11 months of injury her ranking was 900 odd earlier in year now top 40 so could be tough match. Not sure who will win between Madison and Coco they both hard hitters who'll battle to the death I think.

Mens side I'm really hoping Del Potro beats Nadal he crushed him last time played each other in the US Open before he went on to win it, think whoever wins out of them two will take the title, other semi final a bit of a non event really but could end up with an all spanish final if Nadal and Carreno Busta pull it off

my two favs in the tournament Federer and Venus are gone. I was lucky enough to be at the US Open this past weekend and it was amazing to see them live.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 8 2017, 05:38 AM

Not the final I was expecting but knew it could of gone either way and a weird score line to boot....

Sloane defeats Venus 6/1 0/6 7/5
Madison beats Coco 6/1 6/2

Womens Final 2017

Sloane Stephens V Madison Keys (15)

Posted by: Umi Sep 8 2017, 02:47 PM

Ugh, so annoyed with Venus going out. Can't care at all about the result of the women's final now and this was probably her last chance at a grand slam win.

Posted by: Mack501 Sep 8 2017, 09:26 PM

Many thanks for doing this, Mikeee1981 throughout the US Open. Very grateful.

I'm gutted that Venus has missed out on a final spot. I think this was her final chance, a golden opportunity.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Sep 9 2017, 07:50 AM

Nadal beats Del Potro in 4 sets 4/6 6/0 6/3 6/2 and will face Anderson who took out Carreno Busta also in 4 sets 4/6 7/5 6/3 6/4.

I'm still gutted Venus lost as felt perfect chance for her to win it but I won't rule her out of reaching another final in a major she has had her best year in a while this year.

Mens Final 2017

Rafael Nadal (1) V Kevin Anderson (28)

About 500-1 possibly. A tournament full of upsets. A great chance for Stephens and Keys.

I'd really like Stephens to win, to come back from 11 months off and ranked just inside top 1000 before Wimbledon, both herself and Madison have only just returned at Wimbledon after surgery so its a great chance for both.

Out of interest, when was the last time they both won two of the four Slams each in a calendar year?

I don't think that has happened with both Nadal and Federer winning two of the Grand Slams each in a calendar year.

Again many thanks, Mike. For all the updates throughout the Open.

I cant see anything in a calendar year .....but if you cheat haha mid slam season

2008 - Wimbledon - Nadal
2008 - US Open - Federer
2009 - Oz Open - Nadal
2009 - French - Federer

thats the last I can see where it was Nadal & Federer.. Majority of time is more dominated by one winning 3 of the 4 majors.

Its really interesting that both Nadal and Federer have comeback to the top of the game both after taking significant time out... hopefully Murray and Djokovic can go the same way and return to top but with all the young pretenders getting a foothole in and the big 4/5 not really being the dominant force they once was it could be an interesting few years

Another first-round exit for Konta by losing in straight sets to Niculescu by 6-1 6-2.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Oct 2 2017, 07:34 AM

Konta certainly lost what she had recently, well since semis at Wimbledon. She currently 8th out of 8 to qualify for end of the year tournament, her main threat was Kuznetsova who also lost first round. Three players could knock her out but will need to win Beijing to do it so a tough ask, although not sure Konta will want to be at the end of year worlds top 8 as she below par.

Cameron Norrie won his challenger final yesterday which is good news and moves him to top 150 in world

British number four Dan Evans has been banned for one year (backdated from April) due to testing positive for cocaine.

British number four Dan Evans has been banned for one year (backdated from April) due to testing positive for cocaine.

Should be longer, he really likes to self destruct.

Konta out of Tokyo next week foot injury just a precaution apparently, Only Garcia remains in Beijing but needs to win it to overtake Jo and take the 8th slot for end of year, Jo still down to play Moscow week after Tokyo.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Oct 8 2017, 08:42 AM

Simona Halep finally achieved world number 1 from Monday.

Konta looking likely missing end of year tournament as Garcia has made it into the final to keep the pressure up and if wins the final will mean Konta will have to reach Moscow final for a chance, Garcia will also move top ten for first time next week, after showing a lot of promise and Andy Murray once saying she is a future number one it seems her potential starting to come through.

Mens side Cameron Norrie who won his second challenger last weekend is into another challenger final today if wins will go top 120

Posted by: Mikee1981 Oct 9 2017, 08:13 AM

Garcia beat Halep in the final moving into the top ten for first time and over taking Konta for the 8th spot for end of year, meaning konta needs to reach Moscow final to make it, so for the 2nd year running she has missed out on the last spot by a whisker she will be an alternative if someone is injured or pulls out.

Cameron Norrie won his 2nd challenger title in row moving to 111th in rankings.

Nadal beat Kyrgios for the mens tital in Beijing

Posted by: Mikee1981 Oct 12 2017, 08:58 AM

Konta has withdrawn from Moscow meaning Garcia takes the last spot at Singapore WTA Tour Finals... 8 Qualifiers from 8 countries:

Simona Halep (Romania)
Garbine Muguruza (Spain)
Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic)
Elina Svitolina (Ukraine)
Venus Williams (USA)
Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia)
Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark)
Caroline Garcia (France)

Sharapova won her first title being back on the tour in Tianjin 7/5 7/6 (10/8) over Sabalenka

Federer won Shanghai over Nadal 6/4 6/3

Posted by: Steve201 Oct 15 2017, 09:11 PM

Hope Rog gets back to world no1!

Posted by: Mikee1981 Oct 18 2017, 02:57 PM

Konta has called time on her 2017 season not traveling to be an alternative at Singapore or taking part in the alternative end of year at Zuhai....she has also called time on her coach Wim Fissette.. so another change in coaches we will see what the new season brings in 2018

Posted by: Mikee1981 Oct 20 2017, 12:53 PM

Kyrgios and Berdych add their names to ending their seasons early due to injury. Seems to be year of top players struggling unless you're Federer or Nadal who have both had a good year.

Naomi Broady and Heather Watson both lost in QF's of Luxembourg yesterday, but both had decent wins and points, Naomi especially as she lost in final qualifying round to then get lucky loser spot and couple of wins under her belt

In Las Vegas Liam Broady beat Cam Norrie in a clash of the brits, Liam is currently back inside top 190 for first time in a while and Cam is nearing top 100 at 110

Posted by: HeadlessJockey Oct 24 2017, 10:19 PM

Venus finding the first serve when it matters, that's why she's still competing at the highest level at 37. Incredible player.

Posted by: Mikee1981 Oct 27 2017, 08:38 AM

So in the Singapore WTA end of year event so far:

White Group

Pliskova BT Venus 6/2 6/2
Muguruza BT Ostapenko 6/3 6/4
Venus BT Ostapenko 7/5 6/7(3/7) 7/5
Pliskova BT Muguruza 6/2 6/2
Ostapenko BT Pliskova 6/3 6/1
Venus BT Muguruza 7/5 6/4

Meaning Venus and Pliskova advance to the semi finals, It also means Muguruza doubtful to end year as world number 1 and Venus will finish top 4 for the year which is amazing

Posted by: Mikee1981 Oct 27 2017, 01:02 PM

Red Group

Halep BT Garcia 6/4 6/2
Wozniacki BT Svitolina 6/2 6/0
Wozniacki BT Halep 6/0 6/2
Garcia BT Svitolina 6/7(7/9) 6/3 7/5
Garcia BT Wozniacki 0/6 6/3 7/5
Svitolina BT Halep 6/3 6/4

Wozniacki and Garcia advance to semi finals, Halep a disappointment again, means only Pliskova able to take the end of year number 1 but has to win the title otherwise Halep will be it

Semi Final line up

Wozniacki V Pliskova
Venus V Garcia

Posted by: Mikee1981 Oct 28 2017, 07:12 PM

Caroline Wozniacki(6) BT Karolina Pliskova(3) - 7/6(11/9) 6/3

Venus Williams(5) BT Caroline Garcia(8) - 6/7(3/7) 6/2 6/3

Venus beats Martinas record of the oldest person to reach the year end final , Venus is 37, Martina was 36.

Simona Halep finishes the year as world number 1 due to Pliskova being defeated

Final

Caroline Wozniacki V Venus Williams

Wozniack has never beaten Venus in previous 7 meetings, the last in 2015

Posted by: Mikee1981 Oct 29 2017, 03:36 PM

Singapore WTA Final

Caroline Wozniacki BT Venus Williams 6/4 6/4

And Nadal will remain #1 for the end of the year.

Posted by: Mack'sXmasSack Nov 6 2017, 08:47 AM

So Rafael Nadal is looking likely to miss the ATP Tour Finals because of injury. Does Carreno Busta replace him or Del Potro?

Posted by: D0bz Nov 6 2017, 08:54 AM

I hope JMDP!

Posted by: Mikee1981 Nov 6 2017, 10:36 AM

Next in line would be Carreno Busta but I cant see Nadal not being there, think Paris was probably more precautionary.

Mens ATP Finals Qualifiers

Rafael Nadal
Roger Federer
Alexander Zverev
Dominic Thiem
Marin Cilic
Grigor Dimitrov
David Goffin
Jack Sock

Yes that was really disgusting and glad that its being looked at, I cant ever imagine the WTA having male models parading themselves and being chosen by the women to decide group they in.

The Nitto draw for groups I feel really favours Nadal no-one his group to trouble him I think. Federer trickier group. Federer group starts Sunday, Nadal Monday

Pete Sampras Group

Nadal
Thiem
Dimitrov
Goffin

Boris Becker Group

Federer
Zverev
Cilic

Well done Grigor on winning the ATP World Tour finals for the first time and at the first attempt.

That moves him up to 3 in the world.

Was hoping Goffin would win just for the total reason thats its a topsy turvy end of year really.

ATP Final

Dimitrov BT Goffin 7/5 4/6 6/3

and in sad news Jana Novotna has died aged 49 from cancer. Jana is one of my earliest tennis memories when she broke down crying after losing to Steffi

Posted by: Mack'sXmasSack Nov 20 2017, 08:29 PM

Very sad news, her eventual win at Wimbledon was one of the great sporting fairytale stories after her crushing losses.

RIP Jana Novotna.

Konta has agreed a deal with Michael Joyce a former Sharapova and Azarenka coach... could be an interesting few months at start of the year to see if she is going to retain her top 10 status

British number 2, Aljaz Bedene has announced he is switching back to Slovenia.

This is down to the fact the ITF wont allow him to play for GB in Davis Cup and Olympics, I personally think he should be able to , they changed rules during his application process and had submitted everything before they announced the changes. He wants to play Davis Cup and aim for 2020 Olympics and only way he can is by going back to Slovenia.

Good for Slovenia on tennis front but bad for GB he's a good player
