What is there to think about? It was obvious that this would happen, and more sports cancellations are inevitable. Imagine the publicity if Coronavirus was spread by means of a major sporting event, the press would be all over why the authorities allowed the event to go ahead.

Prevention is always better than a cure.

Sorry I have rephrased that post. Of course I fully agree with you awardinary why they have done it.

Yup this is absolutely unprecedented for the Sporting world, being likened to the wartime. So many unanswered questions, I think Qatar might be ok just purely because of the fact it's in the winter. But the knock on effects will reverberate for years possibly decades to come.

Lucky we are in Qatar that year, could have been a different story. I should imagine the next UEFA comp will be back on track for 2024 some how (for the qualifications to be played out before hand) otherwise they be clashing with the women's.

I was really looking forward to this year's Euro. I guess it won't be too long for the World Cup the following year in Qatar laugh.gif

Posted by: Rooney 15th March 2020, 03:28 AM

I’ve seen so many theories but right now it seems as though people are confident that in 2-3 months things will be ok again. Let’s be honest the Euros are going to get postponed which is the sensible thing to do right now. I’ve seen the idea that they go to 2021 and also that they get played in December this year.

I have a feeling that the domestic season will probably finish in the summer and we will then adjust the 20-21 and 21-22 seasons to fit in the same timeline with the 2022 World Cup. That’s what I think is the most sensible answer right now, the domestic season has to be finished and I am sure it will be, it’s just when it finishes that is the main thing...

As for the Olympics? Got to be postponed surely.

Posted by: Houdini 15th March 2020, 04:54 AM

If Karen Brady has her way then the season will be null and void. Two things that are virtually guaranteed to happen though are that the Euros wont take place this year and at least 3 English football teams are not going to be happy with the final outcome.

I read an article which said that Jermaine Jenas thinks the cup competitions should be axed to make way for the Premier League season to finish, in my opinion of all the scenarios I've heard/read that is the worst. The league might be the most regularly featured component of a season but it is outnumbered by the other competitions so if those other competitions get voided then you might as well void everything and just restart again.

Karen Brady wants the season stopped so West Ham don’t get in to a relegation battle laugh.gif Let’s be honest the league is not getting voided, we’ve played 75% of the games. The likelihood is it will get finished during the summer. I don’t see any point in starting a new league until you complete the old one and regardless of how much anyone hates Liverpool it would be a complete travesty not to award Liverpool the league title. Luckily from what I’ve read it seems all clubs privately are in agreeance if the league is cancelled then Liverpool should be champions as there’s no way Liverpool don’t collect those 6 points they need.

Posted by: Dobbo 15th March 2020, 10:35 AM

I don't think anyone would begrudge pool against winning the league (tho there would always be banter about how they didn't 'actually' win it) but the big problem is the top 4/5 battle and particularly relegation. That game in hand villa have causes the most headaches in that regard!

Posted by: Mack. 15th March 2020, 10:42 AM

You got the Japanese Prime Minister saying the Olympics will go ahead as planned, personally can't see that happening.

Oh there would be banter but it would be terrible banter as everyone knows Liverpool have won the league. Saying we haven’t/ won’t is pure clutching at straws.

Anyway I think it’s all moot as the league will get finished. The world has to get back to normal at some point over the next couple of months otherwise financially the world will be crippled and won’t be able to recover. There’s way too much riding in terms of broadcasting rights etc. etc. That makes me thing the league will be completed over the summer as the Euros are 100% getting moved.

Posted by: Mart!n 15th March 2020, 11:02 AM

If the Euro games don't get played this year, the PL should used the summer to finish the League, and start next season in September, and play extra games in the week to catch up. I'm sure they will find an easy solution that is going to work. It be good practice for when the Domestic and European Leagues will have to shuffle about in 2022 due to the World Cup.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 15th March 2020, 11:18 AM

I think the season should be finished, whenever that is. If needed, next season could be reduced and there are ways to do that depending on appetite - no domestic cups for a season, reduce league games by doing splits like in the SPL. If time is really reduced just play each other once, drawn at random who you get home and away.

Posted by: Suedehead2 15th March 2020, 12:13 PM

The expectation is that the virus will peak in the UK around the end of May. If that happens then there doesn't seem to be much chance of finishing the season in the period currently set aside for the Euros. Therefore, something more radical may be required. That includes completing this season's fixtures in the autumn.

Posted by: Houdini 15th March 2020, 12:56 PM

One possibility that I heard was for Liverpool to be awarded the title, no teams to get relegated and Leeds United & West Brom to get promoted as the top 2 teams currently in the Championship which would extend the number of teams in the league to 22. Then the bottom 4 teams would get relegated and 3 would replace them to get the total back to 20 teams.

I think this would be a good idea if the season can't be finished but it would cause controversy for teams chasing play off positions in the Championship. In the first season after World War 2 this is what happened.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 15th March 2020, 02:34 PM

Whilst that sort of makes sense, it only makes sense for that division where the top 2 in the Championship have a reasonable advantage (6 and 7 points ahead with only 9 remaining - they're unlikely to be caught), and I don't think anyone would really mind Liverpool being awarded the title. But as you go down the leagues you can't replicate it, and is anyone offering this argument suggesting a solution to the other divisions? In league 1 2nd and 8th are split by three points, with teams having played a different number of games (between 34 and 36), where do you make the cut off there? The same in league 2, the top team only 5 ahead of 5th who have a game in hand, how can you fairly say any of those teams can be awarded promotion? You can't. The season needs to finish.

Also, 4 down and 3 up will leave 21, not back to 20.

I agree that the season needs to finish and that would be the best scenario. It was only mentioned for the Premier League but yes they would definitely need to take the lower leagues into consideration. The playoffs would need to be cancelled in the 2020/21 season to get the number of participants back to normal if they use this system. This is probably the toughest decision the FA have ever had to make because there is the European club competitions to take in consideration as well.

Posted by: Mart!n 15th March 2020, 02:56 PM

I agree this season needs to be finished, Gillingham are in contention to get in the play-offs, in League One, won't be fair on them if they just miss out

USA Track and Field, athletics' US governing body, has called for this summer's Olympics in Tokyo to be delayed because of the ongoing coronavirus situation.

The federation has asked the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee to advocate to the International Olympic Committee for the postponement of the Games.

The Olympics are scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August.

The worst part is that they have only just acknowledged what we have known for weeks - that the games may need to be postponed. Until now, they have been insisting that they will definitely go ahead as scheduled. If they are postponed just for a couple months (although that seems over-optimistic at the moment), that could benefit athletes as the weather will be more favourably by then.

Japan and the IOC have finally faced reality and said the Olympics will be postponed until 2021.

Posted by: Quarantilas 24th March 2020, 12:57 PM

Damn right. There’s a dozen sports that can’t do any training right now in a lot of countries and it was deeply unfair for them for the IOC to recklessly push on with profiteering over the well-being of athletes and their ability to train and perform at their peak for what is the absolute pinnacle of their career

Posted by: I. :II: z 24th March 2020, 02:24 PM

Good move. Would be irresponsible for them to be held now and I suspect it's contributed to the rather lackluster response to the virus in Japan (trying to downplay the reported limits of the outbreak there and being generally slow to do most measures). And setting it for a year from now rather than cancelling until 2024 (which I thought might have been a possibility) means that fewer athletes miss out on their prime years and we still do get a Tokyo Olympics.

I imagine there is an aligned approach to how the clubs are operating, as if the fans are already members/season ticket holders they can prove the live in the local area and are not traveling tjrough different Tiers etc.

Next year's TT races on the Isle of Man have been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The festival, worth about £30m to the Manx economy, brings tens of thousands of visitors each year. It had been due to take place from 29 May to 12 June.

Enterprise Minister Laurence Skelly said the "logical decision" to cancel the event for a second year was needed to protect residents and visitors.

That's not a good sign for the Euros nor the Olympics if we're seeing events due to take place in June cancelled!

Isn't it more that they don't want thousands of people descending on the Isle of Man?

I can see them shifting all the games in the Euros to one place and not asking fans to travel and for the Olympics, I suspect it will go ahead but there will be a reduced capacity at certain events. Because these events are ticketed too for the majority I suspect we will see the mandatory vaccine or having a covid test before hand before you are allowed entry..

I see they allowed 18000 people in to watch Australia v India at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday and another 18000 for the second match yesterday.

Posted by: Suedehead2 30th November 2020, 05:10 PM

I'm surprised there hasn't been much talk of switching the Euros to a single country. England, France, Germany, Spain and Italy should all be capable of hosting a tournament at relatively short notice.

Villa vs Newcastle called off..

Villa will have 2 games in hand now, not sure when there are gaps in the schedule now. Must be pretty bad as I thought the Premier League would make clubs play with their U23s..

OTOH, the ban on spectators in Tier 3 areas appears to apply to “non-elite” leagues as well. That will mean that a lot of leagues below the National Leagues will struggle to resume next month.

Clubs in the Isthmian, Southern and Northern Premier Leagues have voted to continue with the suspension. That is likely to mean no resumption until January at best.

Sporting events in London will not have fans attending from Wednesday after the UK capital was moved into the highest tier of coronavirus restrictions.

Up to 2,000 had been allowed at outdoor arenas in England after the end of the second national lockdown on 2 December.

However, a rise in infections has resulted in the move into tier three.

West Ham's match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday will be behind closed doors, as will the midweek Premier League matches at Arsenal and Fulham.

European rugby's Heineken Champions Cup and Challenge Cup have been temporarily suspended, organisers have confirmed.

It comes after the French government decreed its clubs should not play in the competitions this month.

As a result, European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) says it had "no choice" but to postpone all matches scheduled for the weekends of 16 and 23 January.

However, EPCR aims to resume and finish the tournaments "as soon as practicable".

Tournament chiefs hope two rounds of Heineken Champions Cup and Challenge Cup pool games on the weekends of 15-17 and 22-24 can go ahead at a later date as authorities deal with the impact of a new strain of Covid-19.

There have been spectators at the Australian Open but Melbourne has now been placed into lockdown again so there will be no crowds tomorrow. Also, the people watching the Novak Djokovic match taking place right now have been told to leave so they will be home by midnight. They were not pleased about this and there was lots of booing. The match was suspended and has now resumed in an empty arena. It looks like it might go to a fifth set.

Up to 10,000 fans could be back in stadiums by mid-May as part of the government's plans to move England out of lockdown.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a four-part plan to lift the coronavirus lockdown.

Outdoor sports including football, golf and tennis will be allowed to resume in England from 29 March.

The plan to ease lockdown requires four tests on vaccines, infection rates and new coronavirus variants to be met.

"The turnstiles of our sports stadia will once again rotate," said Johnson.

Leisure centres, gyms and swimming pools can open from 12 April.

Venues such as gyms, tennis courts and golf courses have been closed across England since lockdown was announced on 4 January.

And full capacity stadia from June 21st, that's right in the middle of the Euros.

Part of me wonders whether the rumours about Euro 2021 coming to us might be true. UEFA could easily push back by a few days and they'd likely get full capacity for most games..

Got tickets to England vs Czech Republic of 22nd June (day after target date of full stadia) and a last 16 tie.

That's the dream. I've held on to my ticket but I'd gladly swap if I could get an England game somewhere. But even though the idea if full stadia, I still think that is slightly ambitious! But at least it gives confidence that the 21/22 season will be allowed to have crowds, so that's something to look forward to.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended after an increase in coronavirus cases among players.

A Sunrisers Hyderabad player tested positive before Tuesday's match against Mumbai Indians.

Monday's match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore was postponed after two KKR players tested positive.

In a statement, the IPL said it had "unanimously decided" to postpone the season after an emergency meeting.

"The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and the other participants involved in organising the IPL," it said.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said: "We send our sincere apologies to fans and partners.

"We know it will cause immense disappointment and inconvenience to many."

Australia's Tour Down Under has been cancelled for the second year in a row because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Restrictions in Australia made it difficult for teams to travel to the event, which was due to be part of the men's UCI World Tour and women's UCI Pro Tour.

The Tour Down Under is traditionally the first Tour race of the season.

The Women's World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, which involved Ireland, has been abandoned after the detection of the new Omicron Covid-19 variant.

Travel restrictions have been imposed from a number of African countries, including the host country.

The tournament was scheduled to be played until 5 December to decide the final three spots for the Women's World Cup in New Zealand next year.

Qualification places will now be decided based on team rankings.

This means that Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies will progress to next year's tournament, with Sri Lanka and Ireland occupying the two remaining berths in the next 2022-25 cycle of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Women's Championship.
