Which type of song would you rather have as the Christmas #1. Would you rather have a:
1. A charity or novelty song, e.g all of LadBaby’s songs, Justin and the NHS, etc.
2. A regular Christmas song, e.g. Last Christmas, Santa Tell Me and All I Want For Christmas Is You
3. An everyday chart song, e.g. positions, Sweet Melody and willow.
This is actually a good question (and I'm pretty sure I know which one most people would pick) but you should have done it as a poll.
Definitely not a regular chart song, that would be rather boring, so either of the other two.
Anything besides YNTCD by Taylor Swift
Added a poll as this question would be better for it~
I honestly like a mix of all three, as long as there's SOMETHING happening, I like that the Christmas chart is one week where all sorts of weird and wonderful things can chart, can't think of anything worse than it becoming 'just another week'.
I went for regular Christmas song, but actually I would have added a fourth option which I'd have picked: a new original Christmas song.
Novelty is only fine imo if it's good but Mr Blobby and Ladbaby is not the novelty I like at all because it just plain isn't funny..
Christmas songs being Christmas #1 for me but I'm not opposed to a regular song getting there unless it's something that is awful.
A good one would be a nice start
I’d rather it be a proper battle between “regular” new releases (or new christmas songs: Mariah going number one every year would be boring too) with big artists going out head to head instead of what we have now of one charity single taking off and no one daring to challenge it (although it looks like Ed Sheeran may be but by releasing on Monday instead of Friday that gives LadBaby a huge advantage)
A song that matches up to the quality of previous Christmas No.1s that I happen to like.
OK now the poll is up I went for a regular Christmas song, but I wish it was a new Christmas song rather than a classic.
I want the balance of a good quality song and one that feels like an event. 'Rockabye' was my favourite Christmas #1 since 2009 in terms of quality but the fact that it was just another standard week at the top for it really dulled the concept of the Christmas #1. So I like the effort of the LadBaby campaigns but wish the music was better.
Out of those options I'd pick "A regular Christmas song" as I enjoy a large majority of them and it at least feels unique to the festive period.
I'd prefer a regular song like "Rockabye" or one of the Spice Girls singles. Not Christmas related, but maybe released just before Christmas so that it can be part of a 'battle'.
I'd be up for a Christmas song being the #1 if it was a new and fresh one every year, but not Mariah/Wham/The Pogues etc. Although at this point I'd take anything other than LadBaby.
I like a mix of all of them but voted a Christmas song!
I hate when one thing dominates and there’s no competition. Like when XF dominated. The old days saw a mix of everything for example Christmas songs (Slade or Mud), huge regular hits like Human League or Queen or novelty records like Mr Blobby and Benny Hill.
You should have added An Original Christmas Song to the poll as that would have been my option
agree on an original new xmas song
when regular songs are xmas #1 is a sort of non-event, like when Rockabye did it
I went with charity/novelty song, with standard Christmas song being a close second. I don’t see the issue with a charity song where it is usually one week that feels weird having a normal chart song at the top. Rockabye being an example already noted that does not feel like a Xmas number one at all.
New Christmas songs would also be great but not keen on the amazon exclusives where these songs are blowing up, but most people who don’t have an Amazon subscription will never have heard them before the chart. #1s should have some hype around them which River did not have.
The one which sells the most. Sorry Ellie.
But really I do like a novelty track at #1 because it encapsulates the madness of the Christmas chart plus it's the only week of the year where novelty hits have a chance. 2018 was very satisfying with someone no-one had ever heard of coming out of nowhere and denying a manufactured run-of-the-mill pop star.
Exactly but there's next to zero chance of that happening nowadays with streaming being so dominant which certainly isn't a platform suited for novelty.
'Baby Shark' wasn't that far off in fairness!
You could probably argue that for some of the TikTok hits as well, there was that Pakistani ringtone song?
Edit: ah "Skechers" who could forget
Could even Old Town Road be classed as a novelty song?
It doesn't matter which of the 3 I vote for; I just wish it was an actual decent song that will last beyond the season. Some novelty songs like Bob the Builder went on to sell a million copies, for example, and even Mr Blobby is a track that, if it were to be played at a Christmas disco, would bring a few smiles.
Novelty songs like the LadBaby efforts...they have MASSIVE first week sales, but neither of the first 2 have sold over 200k. The 2nd one went from #1, to #57, then out.
Generally, I'd say that if you get the Christmas Number One, but even with all the publicity that gets you, you still can't manage a second week in the top 20...then it can't be a great song, y'know?
'Old Town Road' could definitely be called a novelty song (although it feels a bit odd to do so when it ended up getting so much genuine acclaim - I think the Billy Ray Cyrus remix, as memey as the original idea was, actually gave it more credibility).
An everyday chart song.
I personally don't consider Old Town Road a novelty song myself. Think the novelty link was the whole Red Dead Redemption theme that accompanied it but it was essentially just a country/hip hop mash-up that was seen as a bit of an unusual fusion.
it definitely took off due to memes and tiktok so was a novelty hit in that respect, even if it has more credibility as a song than Crazy Frog or Baby Shark.
Going to close every thread I post in, didn't even say anything wrong. Offended because someone doesnt have the same views
