17th May 1992

It's a first week on top for Curiosity, as Johnny Bristol's 1974 classic does what his version didn't - top my chart. It's not as good, obviously, but it's still good enough to Hang On In There Baby. Richard Marx' classic Hazard gives him a 2nd top 10, and the highest new entry is yet another classic cover - Marillion extend their run to 9 years as Rare Bird's Sympathy, a 1970 progrock goodie, debuts at 11. Teenage hip-hop-sters Kris Kross meanwhile debut with the jumping Jump at 19.

Was (Not Was) cover INXS as Listen Like Thieves enters at 47, and then there's two absolute classics debuting - one obscure indie pop collab between Lightning Seeds and Terry Hall, one-time Fun Boy Three and Specials vocalist and songwriter, Sense being a criminally minor chart hit and new at 50 here; and kd Lang debuting at 53 with her indie-country fab ballad Constant Craving, what a voice and song. Never a massive hit, but still well-known.

Thomas Dolby extends his chart career to a decade, Close But No Cigar it'll get any longer than that, The Cure slip in at 72 with the famous Friday I'm In Love for a 12th year of charting, Joan Armatrading appears to be making a personal statement Wrapped Around Her at 73, and Del Amitri sneak in at 74 with the over-rated Always The Last To Know.

bit of a gap since the last one again!

24th May 1992

It's a 49-place climb for the fabulous Lightning Seeds collab with the late great Terry Hall, Sense. Still sounds great in the weeks since Terry passed away suddenly as I type in early 2023. Richard Marx hits a new peak of 4 with the fab Hazard and highest new entry in the wake of Benny Hill's death is the genuinely amusing and well-constructed Wild West (Country) parody, Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West) a UK number one in 1971, and 21 years on it finally makes my personal top 10. Kriss Kross Jump to 7 and Marillion take Sympathy where Rare Bird took it in 1970 - top 10, and 7 years since Kayleigh went top 10.

In a hectic week for new entries, Craig McLachlan Aussie soap star is back with another top 20 track, No Reason Why I haven't heard it for 30 years - but I haven't. Elton John can still enter high with a big new release, and it's The One at 20, 19 years of hits. kd Lang vaults up to 19 with the wonderful Constant Craving, pure class. Annie Lennox has a Precious quick follow-up to Why at 27, and Incognito give the jazzfunk treatment to Stevie Wonder's 1974 hit, Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing at 28.

Lisa Stansfield enters with one I've forgotten, Set Your Loving Free at 35, and Erasure's huge ABBA covers EP is new at 39 - I cherry-picked Lay All Your Love On Me as the best track. While it was great to see them cover it, and with amusingly fab videos to boot, they weren't quite in the same league as ABBA to me. George Michael is Too Funky at 44, and rather good it is too, Shut Up And Dance are Raving, Tia Carrere is Sweet-covering, Take That are Tavares-covering and heading for the big time, Ce Ce Peniston is banging out the singles at pace, and The Pogues cover The Rolling Stones.

That leaves some serious rock action from Metallica, and Guns 'N' Roses, sneaking into the bottom end, along with Springsteen lengthening his 17-year run with Better Days.

31st May 1992

It's a first week on top for Richard Marx as he grabs a first number one with his haunting Hazard, with Elton John extending his run of top 10 singles with The One to 21 years. Incognito peak higher than Stevie Wonder did in 1974 with Don't You Worry Bout A Thing, and kd Lang's gorgeous Constant Craving also gets some top 10 action.

Highest new entry is revamp of the Distant Cousins 1989 chart-topper You Used To, at 23, while Utah Saints borrow some Cloudbusting Kate Bush and make an exciting dance hit Something Good at 32. The Pasadenas cover a US 70's soul smash that never hit in the UK, and enter at 33, Alice Cooper is on 20 years of feeding his Frankenstein at 59 and Cyndi Lauper is just behind with new track The World Is Stone for 9 years of charting.

Swing Out Sister follow-up their chart-topper, Notgonnachange is the newie, and The Adventures are Raining All Over The World, borrowing the hook line from ELO's Showdown (but not the tune), and finally a new Disney animation Beauty And The Beast brings Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson back into chart action. I've never seen the film. Nor the remake. Just never got round to it - and I have Disney+ as well!

7th June 1992

It's 2 weeks presiding over a hectic chart for Richard Marx and Hazard. Distant Cousins return to the top 3 with former chart-topper You Used To, though it's been tinkered with a bit for '92, kd Lang is up to 4 with future chart-topper (in 1993) Constant Craving, and Craig McLachlan gets a surprise Aussie soap star top 5 - One Reason Why is Something Good had leapfrogged to 7 for Utah Saints, while Shakespears Sister Don't Care as they get a 3rd top 10 as Erasure add to their growing total of top 10's with an ABBA-esque EP. Looking forward to Bjorn Again doing an Erasure-esque EP.

Highest new entry at 20 is Roy Orbison's version of the Cyndi Lauper hit I Drove All Night, his final great chart hit. Both versions are good, but hey it's Roy Orbison! Dr Hook bring back their 1976 biggie for some additional chart weeks A Little Bit More at 21, and Was (Not Was) are new at 29 with the highly-unlikely, yet oddly loveable, guest vocals of Kim Basinger (actress!) and Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy gets 22 years of hits, therefore, and The Was (Not) 'Brothers' 8 years.

Future Sound Of London is apparently Papua New Guinea - one I've not heard in over 30 years and don't recall, but it seems I liked it - new at 33. Sophie B. Hawkins fabulous Damn! (etc) is new at 49 and still great, while The Mission donate another track I've forgotten, Like A Child Again at 53. At 67, and one I'd like to forget, is Mariah Carey's attempt to murder a 70's classic ballad, the Jackson 5's chart-topping (for me) I'll Be There. No worries, she'll get the hang of succeeding at murdering a 70's classic in 1994.

New at 71, a modest entry for one of the great U2 records, Even Better Than The Real Thing was and is still great, and they will do something totally unexpected with it in a few weeks time. At 72, Crowded House debut the lovely Four Seasons In One Day, Prefab Sprout hear The Sound Of Crying at 74 for 9 years of chart action, and Tina Turner makes it a whopping 19 years at 75 with one I've forgotten - I Want You Near Me, it says here.

14th June 1992

It's 3 weeks on top for Hazard, Richard Marx seeing off all-comers, including Shakespear's Sister up to 3 with I Don't Care, their 3rd top 3. Annie Lennox keeps the top 10's coming in her solo career, Precious up to 5, and Damn! Sophie B. Hawkins rockets up to 8 with her fab record, leap-frogging the also-fab Too Funky from George Michael now into 10 years of mostly top 10's. Roy Orbison charts Cyndi Lauper's previous cover of I Drove All Night, for a posthumous top 10 to add his 1989 solo batch and Travelling Wilbury's stuff - but had I been charting in the 60's Roy would have been topping my charts as soon as I could write.

Talking of Cyndi, she's shadowing Roy with leap to 11, The World Is Stone. The Mission also leap up with a remix of Like A Child Again and the highest new entry is Manic Street Preachers with one of their best records, new at 20 it's Motorcycle Emptiness. New at 26, Jerry Burns debuts Pale Red, a good singer-songwriter track that never hit sadly. Faith No More return with a Mid-Life Crisis but not a mid-chart crisis - in at 33! Bob Geldof covers The Small Faces for a 14-year Rat-run, Londonbeat add to their run of singles, giving Jimmy Helms 19 years of hits, Sinitta has a real old go at Shirley & Company's fab Shame Shame Shame, The Beautiful South bring back Bell-Bottom's despite H&S issues when cycling, The B52's make it 13 years of Good Stuff, and Ugly Kid Joe know Everything About You. And even without the internet!

leave a long enough gap and it links with this week's charts - 31 Years Ago this week, my chart was:

21st June 1992

It's 4 weeks on top for Richard Marx, but the main hazard is Shakespear's Sister at 2 with I Don't Care and the Kate-Bush-sampling Utah Saints at 3 with something good - but don't write off Sophie B. and George Michael who also go top 5. Cyndi Lauper adds to her list of top 10's spanning 8 years now with The World Is Stone. The Highest new entry is Thunder, Prince clapping in at 13, and Electronic not far behind at 23 and the good Disappointed, while Buffy Sainte-Marie follows up her top 10 at 29 - Fallen Angels giving her 2 in a row for the first time since 1971/72.

ZZ Top are into year 9 of chart entries as the rather lovely Rough Boy gives them a ballad at 31, Naughty By Nature are O.P.P. at 33, and Frankie Knuckles remixes Loose Ends' Hangin' On A String - still Contemplating 7 years later. Bob Geldof is new at 39 in Room 19, I assume the other side of the record to Sha La La La Lee which drops out. At 48 future fab UK soul chart-topper Ain't No Doubt gives actor Jimmy Nail a great record and an extended singing career 7 years on from Love Don't Live Here Anymore.

Inner City extend their run with Pennies From Heaven at 60, and at 61 Tori Amos debuts Crucify, and Weird Al takes the piss out of Nirvana at 63, continuing where left off a decade earlier with Eat It and many other food-related parodies. Soul II Soul Move Me No Mountain at 71, and Diana Ross scrapes in with One Shining Moment 22 years since her solo career started off and 24 years since The Supremes were at 2 with Love Child in my very first charts.

28th June 1992

It's a first number for Utah Saints with the fab Something Good featuring an uncredited Kate Bush sample from Cloudbusting as a key part of it's construction. Given artists get credits for a a bit of back-up instrumental support or a couple of lines of rap that add nothing to a record these days, I'm continuing to give retrospective featuring credits. That leaves Electronic up to 2 and a tad Disappointed. As they were an actual supercombo, they get no individual credits, and meanwhile Erasure grab another top 5 with their ABBA quartet (but mostly the 2 listed tracks). U2 and Prince add to their growing tally of top 10's 9 years-long for both, as Manic Street Preachers get a first top 10 with the great Motorcycle Emptiness.

Biggest climber into the 20 is Jimmy Nail, against all my then-expectations, and the very wonderful Ain't No Doubt at 13, with yet another invasion of new tracks headed by Messiah at 20 with the dance track Temple Of Dreams. I'll be honest, I have not heard this record in 31 years, so I'm playing it now, and ooh yes, this is the sort of hooky exciting rave House dance I liked (see Utah Saints). There's no actual song to speak of, but it's fun. New at 26 70's rock classic Dream Weaver returns for Gary Wright 16 years on as it started to recognition for being a bit of a70's classic despite not being much of a UK hit.

At 28, another one I've not heard since, Kim Wilde extending her run of chart entries to 11 years, Heart Over Mind is OK, and at 34 Unchain My Heart, the old Ray Charles Blues classic, is covered very nicely by veteran Joe Cocker at 34, giving him a sweet 26 years of chart action since his Beatles-cover debut. New at 39, The Shamen are back with LSI, another winner, and at 61 Innocence are in for a spot of dance action that is nothing to do with Mariah's massacre of the Jackson 5 song. S'OK.

House Of Love tell You Don't Understand at 63, Def Leppard make love like a man, whatever that means, at 69, and Snap! return with a new lineup and a new sound and a rather modest 70 entry for future-monster dance anthem Rhythm Is A Dancer. It will go up! Future 90's girlband musts TLC debut with a retread of an old Temptations song title, Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg at 73, Meatloaf recharts another Bat Out Of Hell oldie, and Joan Armatrading makes it 16 years of folk-soul with True Love in bottom rung slot.

5th July 1992

It's Tom Jones' 1968 murder-ballad drama in at 1, on reissue in the UK charts, holding off Jimmy Nail's new soulful great Ain't No Doubt at 2 as Snap! jump 61 places to 9 with Rhythm Is A Dancer, the biggest record of 1992. Both were UK chart-toppers but will they be here? Highest actiual new record is in at 14 for Asia Blue, a flop but a great record, so good that that Dina Carroll covered Escaping, after changing it about a bit.

Joe Cocker grabs a top 20 spot and extends his run of those to 24 years, and meanwhile Sinitta covers Shirley & Co's 1975 disco fun hit Shame Shame Shame. It's not as good as the original, maybe there should be a bell ringing after every utterance of "Shame"? Shakespear's Sister make it 4 singles off the album with Goodbye Cruel World new at 47, and Celine Dion scrape in with If You Asked me To at 69, while Jason's on a Mission Of Love at 70. Mostly, though, he was heading towards being a West End star.

13th July 1992

It's a first week on top for Jimmy Nail, from actor to topping my chart - not the first to do that, Lee Marvin, Doris Day to name but 2 had already done that, Ain't No Doubt. Electronic are back up to 2 and Disappointed yet again not to go to 1, Joe Cocker gets his 2nd ever top 10, and highest peaking - though the first (With A Little Help From My Friends) would eventually also peak at 7 in 2008. Unchain My Heart in it's original version peaked at 70 in 1987. Was (Not Was) meanwhile get a 3rd top 10 8 years on from Out Come The Freaks, and 5 years on from Spy In The House Of Love, which also means Ozzy Osbourne gets his first top 10 outside Black Sabbath, 22 years on from Paranoid doing it first.

INXS keep the hits coming at 27, Heaven Sent and 6-years-worth, Dina Carroll debuts her latest Ain't No Man at 29 as she eyes up Escaping at 12 for future reference, and Madonna has a subdued new entry for This Used To My Playground, one of her movie soundtrack ballads, as I recall - but certainly not from an album - at 30. I'll pay Lip Service to Wet Wet having 5 years of hits at 33, as Michael Jackson enters at 36 his latest offcut from Dangerous, Who Is It? Sarah Brightman has another go at musical opera, this time with Jose Carreras, 14 years on from her disco diva Hot Gossip days when she topped my chart as a Starship Trooper.

Other veterans returning include Bryan Adams (a mere 7 years and including a chart-topper), Siouxsie (14 years and counting, including a chart-topper), Elton John (21 years and 9 chart-toppers) and Eric Clapton (20 years and 1 chart-topper). More modern sounds feature a slab of kiddie rave, as Sesame Street gets the clubby treet-ment, E's may or not be included.

19th July 1992

It's 2 weeks on top for Jimmy Nail as I go to see Shakespear's Sister in concert this week (see my faves below and Goodbye Cruel World up to 11), but the main threat seems to be the new Michael Jackson single up 34 places to 2, equalling Black & White's peak position as lead track off the album. Madonna keeps the top 10's coming 8 years into her career, This Used To Be My Playground making it her 20th. The Shamen get a 4th at least with LSI.

Highest new entry is Lindsey Buckingham's Countdown, key member of the mega-Fleetwood Mac period and 10 years on from Trouble topping my chart, 16 years on including Mac. Gary Moore drafts in Blues legend B.B. King for a cover of Since I Met You Baby at 38, Prince drops 7 out of the top 10 and adds in a double A side at 40 - Sexy M.F. and Strollin'. Simply Red are in my current charts 30 years on, but Mick was only a mere 7 years into his chart span in 1992, Your Mirror new at 47, and Dannii Minogue covers The Jacksons chart-topper Show You The Way To Go at 59.

Other returnees: Thomas Dolby on a decade of chart entries with newie I Love You Goodbye, Nick Berry returns 4 years on to have a go at ruining the Showaddywaddy hit cover of Heartbeat, theme tune to his latest TV show, a cop in the rural 60's. Done E follows-up, Monie Love adds to her run on a Full Term Love, and Right Said Fred Daydream about Those Simple Things at 67. James copy Prince with new song title Seven, Maria McKee gets another entry 2 years on from her biggie, this time Sweetest Child, and Morrissey tries to alienate the bigger-boned fan, but in bottom rung it's the dad of the fabulous Miley & Noah 21st century popstars, Billy Ray Cyrus inflicting Achy Break Heart on the world. I forgive him, though, if only for his contributions to Old Town Road, Lil Nas X's monster, and Noah Cyrus' heartbreaking flop Noah (Stand Still), and mental health support.

Who Is It? is amazing wub.gif Both in the original and ‘the most patient mix’ forms

I’m really surprised to see it that high here though as I thought you had a general dislike, or at least apathy, for the material on Dangerous.

Playground is quite sadly sweet and not that well remembered these days, which is a shame! Glad you rate it! smile.gif

I think it's one of his lesser-known tracks these days, but I always rated it. Actually there's a lot on Dangerous I still rate, I think it was the early Jack-swing singles I thought were a slight dip in the usual quality control (and following the latest trends instead of being a trend-setter) - though one I love I know is one you don't love laugh.gif There's nothing I dislike on the album, it just didn't get the feel of Bad's "ooh almost every track could be a hit single" that I got when I bought it and played it to death. I think Dangerous I was less obsessive about, from fading memory, and Quincy Jones' absence was missed, it was a less cohesive whole though I can see why he wanted to get more "relevant" to the 90's music scene and sounding like it was 1987 still wasn't a sensible option biggrin.gif

26th July 1992

It's 2 weeks on top for Jimmy Nail as U2 become the next contender at 2 with the original and remix of Even Better Than The Real Thing. I couldn't separate them quality-wise so it was either have the same song twice or treat it as a double A. Siouxsie & The Banshees add to their list of top 10's Face To Face making it 14 years-worth since Hong Kong Gardens started the ball rolling. Buffy Saint-Marie makes it two in a row, a first for her 21 years on from Soldier Blue doing it.

Highest new entry is Jon Secada debuting with the fab Just Another Day at 14, as Dr. Alban also bangs straight in with It's My Life, future advert backdrop for many products. Nirvana make it another top 40 as Lithium debuts at 33, and Bruce extends his run to 17 years as he laments about 57 Channels. We had Sky satellite dish at the time and there were never 57 channels to choose from! More than the 4 we were used to though. Genesis stick out another OK pop single, Jesus He Knows Me at 58, and Arrested Development bring in some originality with the quirky Tennessee at 62. Elton & Eric do a collab on a Runaway Train at 70 and Sunscreem club into the chart at 75, U Make Me a pretty good record.

2nd August 1992

It's a 2nd chart-topper for U2 5 years after Still Havent Found What I'm Looking For, Even Better Than The Real Thing having both rock and dance legs, and holding of Snap from a second number one. Madness bring another classic oldie back into the top 10 as 1980's My Girl enters at 7, with hottest new track coming from Betty Boo at 20 - Let Me Take You There. She's been back of late with some good tracks. New at 36, Prefab Sprout drop the best record of their career, If You Don't Love Me, which also extends their chart run to 7 years.

Enya's new at 39 with Book Of Days, for 5 years of Orinoco Flow-ing, Janet Jackson & Luther Vandross team up on the dance cracker Best Things In Life Are Free at 47, Luther's been around for 17 years since backing Bowie on Young Americans, and Janet since 1984. Nick Kamen makes an unexpected return at 50, with You're Not The Only One, some 6 years on from his Madonna-debut. Kriss Kross jump in at 60 with Warm It Up, Roxette ask How Do You Do at 67, 3 years into their run of success, and Brand New Heavies keep the hits popping with Don't Let It Go To Your Head at 71.

9th August 1992

It's 2 weeks on top for U2 as Was (Not Was) takes the runner-up spot with Kim Basinger and Ozzy Osbourne in support and an odder coupling on a dance track would be hard to find! Highest new entry is the revived This Charming Man, peaking higher in the Uk charts and my charts 9 years on, at number 5, bit of a classic! Right said Fred get a second top 10, neither of them their monster hits, with Those Simple Things, and Roy Orbison makes it 2 top 10's in a row with k.d. Lang's duet with Roy on his classic Crying about to become a hit at last, new in at 9. The song topped my charts in 1980 for Don McLean.

Peggy Lee's Madonna-revived classic Jazz finger-snapper Fever is debuting at 33, 34 years on from becoming a hit in the year I was born - Peggy was great, and I always liked the song, and in terms of oldest recording to debut in my chart, that ranks it just behind The Trail Of The Lonesome Pine (Laurel & Hardy), Glen Miller's EP of oldies, and The Lullaby Of Broadway (Winifred Shaw) at the time. Curiosity follow-up their topping Johnny Bristol cover with I Need Your Lovin' at 34, a cover of the 1980 Teena Marie hit. Meanwhile Julian Cope reactivates World Shut Your Mouth 6 years on and new at 36.

Annie Lennox launches a biggie at 53, Walking On Broken Glass as her solo career does very nicely too, thank you very much. Paul Weller drops in with one I've forgotten - Uh Oh! New at 65, while Junior Giscombe covers Dionne Warwicke & The Detroit Spinners' Then Came You 18 years on from the original, and a decade on from his Mama Used To Say debut. Finally, Bobby brown is Humpin' Around 9 years on from being a teenage Candy Girl co-singer, in at 73, and like so much in past lives, oblivious to the tragedies of his relationship with Whitney still to come. Turns out he wasn't the bad boy he was painted to be, and Whitney wasn't the goodie goodie girl-next-door type. Not unless the girl-next-door is heavily into drugs.

KIRSTY MACCOLL Live At Poole Arts Centre

Well, here's a thing. I'd forgotten I'd been to see Kirsty as she was peaking with Walking Down Madison, and not only that my fave performances on the night don't match my expectations. Her original of the Tracey Ullman chart-topper for me is not surprising, but Chip Shop was never a massive fave of mine so for it to rank 2 on the night is a surprise, as is . As is the unknown Fifteen Minutes outdoing her 1992 chart-topper - playing it now as I 100% haven't heard it in 31 years. It's a jazz song. Kirsty did like to genre hop! I'll dig out my review of the concert one day, as It would be nice to think of Kirsty without that ongoing sense of sadness at her early tragic death.

16th August 1992

It's a 3rd week on top for Rock and Dance Remix versions of U2's Even Better Than The Real Thing with Snap! threatening at 2. Highest new entry at 9 is from Bananarama, a good minor hit Movin' On, keeping those top 10 entries strong after a decade of 'em. Janet Jackson & Luther Vandross meanwhile rush up to 10, Luther's first top 10 credited (though he'd been there on Bowie's Young Americans 17 years earlier) and 6 years'-worth for Janet. Bowie, meanwhile, is new at 54 with Real Cool World.

In a bumper week for new entries, Shabba Ranks is new at 20 with Mr. Loverman, 2 Unlimted keep the run going with one I've forgotten, Magic Friend, at 25, Queensryche rock ballad Silent Lucidity are at 33, just ahead of another from Thunder, Low Life In High Places not being one I recall, though. Kylie is new at 41, What Kind Of Fool, boyband Take That grab another minor hit with I Found Heaven, new in at 46, and INXS return with a singalong Beatles-styled big ballad, Baby Don't Cry is a goodie.

Faith No More return with a forgotten single, Undercover debut with a horrendous cover of the perfect Baker Street, it would get on my nerves before too long. Tori Amos has the atmospheric Silent All These Years at 63, The Christians' What's In A Kiss keeps the 8-year run going but not quite up to previous standards, Garland Jeffries remixes his flop (but big hit here) for another try, the late Freddie & opera star Montserrat Caballe bring Barcelona back 5 years' on, presumably due to the Olympics in Barcelona. One of my favourite cities these days (I was there 3 weeks ago) but I'd never even been to Spain in 1992. Finally, The Mission sneak in as they tail off their career with Shades Of Green.
