'Hold On' sold an estimated 211k in 1990 so has sold 411k in total.

I remember watching a 90s countdown on one of the music channels a couple of years ago and if I recall correctly it had sold 195k which would make sense because if it had sold 211k as you suggest it would've been certified silver already. So its total sales are more like 400k I would think.

Not necessarily - only from the July 2013 were singles automatically certified, before then the record company had to request them. So a song could easily have sold well over the amount eligible for a certification without actually having one. Anyhow, the figure of 195k may well be true, although it's worth remembering all sales info pre-1997 can alter between figures.

I wish all songs were certified automatically as soon as they pass the necessary milestone. For example "Stay" by Shakespears Sister had sold over 600k as of Feb 2012 but hasn't been awarded Platinum, its probably closer to 700k by now too.

That's because it dates before 1994 - only sales beyond that point are taken into account (apart from the recent updated certifications for some of the best selling albums).

That's what I mean smile.gif do you think it will ever happen for pre 1994 singles?

Ah I see! tongue.gif Unfortunately not, data particularly for pre-1994 can vary a lot and no one figure can be 100% acknowledged as correct because the current chart compilers (who took over in 1994) just don't have exact access to it, not that they'd admit it. At least estimates are out there so we can guesstimate as close to the likely figures as possible!

yey especially Broken Hearted Girl, always loved this song and thought it was underated and didn't do well commercially so it's pleasantly surprisingly to see a certification cheer.gif

Go and Survivor are both great tracks whilst I cannot quite believe Justin's current chart domination recently like 3 no. 1 singles, What Do You Mean must be close to surpassing the 2x Platinum mark surely? and probably the same with Love Yourself eventually too

Rihanna's "Diamonds" and Bieber's "What Do You Mean?" are now both 2X Platinum. Bieber's total is like 75% streams though.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - THE SOLID SILVER 60S - GREATEST HITS
Silver Certification (Album) 19 February 2016
UNIVERSAL/WARNER (UMTV/WARNER MUSIC TV)
Released 11 September 2015
Certification History:
Silver Certification 22 July 2013

This is obviously wrong - You can't get a Silver certification in 2013 and another one in 2016.
There are two different albums with the same title. Surely BPI could distinguish them by their catalogue numbers?

Shocking that NOW 92 is the only NOW in the main series released near Christmas not to be certified 3x platinum. Shouldn't be far off

Beyonce adds a 19th single certification to her discography with 'Broken Hearted Girl' going Silver. Not one I realised was anywhere near the 200k mark!

I imagine 'You Gave Love a Bad Name' has an overall total of ~300k+, having peaked at #14 in 1986.

I'm surprised 'Dreaming of You' going Silver before the initially more successful and more popular on radio 'In the Morning'. The former sold less than 48k in 2002 (didn't make the Year End) with a peak of #13 and the latter sold 65k in 2005 with a peak of #6.

Delilah's 'Go' sold 144k in 2011 so has sold 56k since.

Destiny's Child's 'Survivor' sold 261k in 2001, meaning 139k in downloads and streams.

Note that the Mamas & Papas best of that has been certified 2x Platinum and was released in 1995 is not the same album as California Dreamin': The Best of... that charted at #14 in 1995. In fact, I'll show you what MW said in 2006 to clear things up:

QUOTE
Sixties icons The Mamas & The Papas’ California Dreamin’ - The Best Of The Mamas & Papas debuts at number 21 on sales of 9,140. The album is not to be confused with California Dreamin ‘ - The Very Best Of The Mamas & Papas (number 14 in 1995) or California Dreamin’ - The Greatest Hits Of The Mamas & Papas (number 30 in 1997). Another Mamas & Papas compilation, entitled simple Best Of was released on budget label Spectrum in 1995. It tripled sales last week and re-enters the budget chart at number 25,. It has sold 399,727 copies since its release 11 years ago.

Singles
Eminem ft. Lil Wayne - No Love - Silver - Released: 2010
Justin Bieber - What Do You Mean? - 2x Platinum - Released: 2015
Little Mix ft. Jason Derulo - Secret Love Song - Silver - Released: 2015
Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Silver - Released: 1969
Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop - Platinum - Released: 2013
MNEK & Zara Larsson - Never Forget You - Platinum - Released: 2015
P!nk - Get the Party Started - Gold - Released: 2002
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb - Silver - Released: 2004
Rihanna - Diamonds - 2x Platinum - Released: 2012
Rihanna ft. Drake - Work - Silver - Released: 2016
Roberta Flack - The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face - Silver - Released: 1972
Shawn Mendes - Stitches - Platinum - Released: 2015
Sigala ft. Bryn Christopher - Sweet Lovin' - Gold - Released: 2015
Tchami ft. Kaleem Taylor - Promesses - Silver - Released: 2015
The Killers - Somebody Told Me - Gold - Released: 2004
ZAYN - PILLOWTALK - Silver - Released: 2016

Albums
Adele - 25 - 9x Platinum - Released: 2015
Birdy - Fire Within - Gold - Released: 2013
Colbie Caillat - Coco - Silver - Released: 2007
Coldplay - A Head Full of Dreams - 2x Platinum - Released: 2015
Jack Johnson - Brushfire Fairytales - Platinum - Released: 2001
Mark Knopfler - Tracker - Silver - Released: 2015
Shawn Mendes - Handwritten - Silver - Released: 2015
The Jam - That's Entertainment: Collection - Gold - Released: 2012
Various Artists - 100 Hits: 80s Essentials - Gold - Released: 2013
Various Artists - Acoustic Cafe: - Silver - Released: 2016
Various Artists - Chilled - Gold - Released: 2015
Various Artists - The Solid Silver 60s: Greatest Hits - Silver - Released: 2015
Various Artists - Throwback Slowjamz - Silver - Released: 2016

Shocked Eminem's 'No Love' has sold that much! I assume a good portion is made up of streams given it didn't make the 2010 End of Year, meaning less than 88k for that year. 'Spacebound', which succeeded it, can't be too far away from Silver given the similar chart runs.

'Secret Love Song' becomes Little Mix's 8th certified single, matching Girls Aloud and just overtaking Sugababes.

The last complete total I saw for 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' was 750k a couple of years ago, possibly near 800k now?

'Get the Party Started' selling 400k makes it P!nk's 6th best seller. It sold 290k in 2002 so has managed 110k in downloads/streams.

I don't think 'Comfortably Numb' was a single in the UK, or at least it never charted. Either way, it has managed 200k in downloads/streams.

'Work' becomes the 36th Rihanna single (lead + features) to sell over 200k.

'The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face' is likely to have a total above 300k, having previously reached #14 in the 70s.

'Somebody Told Me' sold just 53k in 2005 and no more than 60k if you include its 2004 sales, meaning about 340k since.

Brushfire Fairytales was originally released in 2001 but didn't chart until 2005 after the success of In Between Dreams. It sold well enough in 2006 to make the year end chart, with sales of 153k for that year.

Various Artists - The Country Album - Gold - Released: 2015
Years & Years - Communion - Platinum - Released: 2015

'Best Thing I Never Had' sold 429k in 2011 so has sold 171k since. It's Beyonce's 7th single to hit Platinum.

'Sun is Up' sold 170k in 2011, so has sold 30k since.

'Radioactive' sold 132k in 2010, so has sold 68k since. It's Kings of Leon's third best seller, behind the million sellers 'Sex on Fire' and 'Use Somebody'.

'All I Want' has passed 200k sales/streams despite a #67 peak. It had a total of 120k at the beginning of January 2015 so did well to sell like 70k in last year.

Blink-182's GH sold 247k in 2005 but didn't reach the end of year in any succeeding year. It has sold 353k since, meaning ~35k per year.

-x-

I've compiled a list of #1 singles and albums from the 21st century that remain uncertified:

Singles
Manic Street Preachers - The Masses Against the Classes (2000)
Steps - Stomp! (2000)
A1 - Same Old Brand New Me (2000)
Aaliyah - More Than a Woman (2002)
Blazin' Squad - Crossroads (2002)
Busted - You Said No (2003)
Tomcraft - Loneliness (2003)
Daniel Bedingfield - Never Gonna Leave Your Side (2003)
Kylie Minogue - Slow (2003)
Sam & Mark - With a Little Help From My Friends (2004)
Busted - Who's David? (2004)
Brian McFadden - Real to Me (2004)
Robbie Williams - Radio (2004)
Ja Rule ft. R Kelly & Ashanti - Wonderful (2004)
Ciara ft. Petey Pablo - Goodies (2005)
Mint Royale - Singin' in the Rain (2005)
U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own (2005)
Oasis - Lyla (2005)
McFly - I'll Be OK (2005)
Chico - It's Chico Time (2006)
McFly - Don't Stop Me Now/Please, Please (2006)
Westlife - The Rose (2006)
Girls Aloud vs. Sugababes - Walk This Way (2007)
McFly - Baby's Coming Back/Transylvania (2007)
Eva Cassidy & Katie Melua - What a Wonderful World (2007)
Vanessa Jenkins & Bryn West ft. Sir Tom Jones & Robin Gibb - Islands in the Stream (2009)
The X Factor Finalists 2011 ft. JLS & One Direction - Wishing on a Star (2011)
NHS Choir - A Bridge Over You (2013)
Gareth Malone's All-Star Choir - Wake Me Up (2014)

'Baby's Coming Back/Transylvania', as far as I'm aware, is the lowest selling #1 with only 51k sold in the year of its release, and it had failed to sell above 85k to make the list of Top 10 McFly singles in 2012.

Albums
Elton John vs Pnau - Good Morning to the Night (2012)
Bob Dylan - Shadows in the Night (2015)
All Time Low - Future Hearts (2015)
The Chemical Brothers - Born in the Echoes (2015)
The Maccabees - Marks to Prove It (2015)
Faithless - Faithless 2.0 (2015)

The lowest selling #1 album is likely to still be Good Morning to the Night which was in the 30-35k region come the end of 2012, and by that time it was long gone from the chart anyway. The Chemical Brother's Born in the Echoes had sold 38k by the end of October 2015 and is probably just over 40k by now - a total I don't Elton will have passed.

The Weeknd - Often - Silver - Released: 2014
Tinie Tempah ft. Jess Glynne - Not Letting Go - Platinum - Released: 2015

Albums
Calvin Harris - Motion - Platinum - Released: 2014
James Bay - Chaos and the Calm - 2x Platinum - Released: 2015
Sia - This is Acting - Silver - Released: 2016
Various Artists - 100 Hits: Mum - Gold - Released: 2010
Various Artists - Now That's What I Call the 80s - Gold - Released: 2015

'Say Something' sold 477k in 2014, meaning 123k in the past year and 2 months of this. It's the 4th Christina single to reach Platinum.

'Turning Tables' sold 70-80k in 2011 and will have sold steadily in 2012 too. Didn't realise it was that close to Silver! 'Rumour Has It' should make the mark one day but is on 140-150k rn.

'Who's That Chick?' sold 149k in 2010, a total increased to 525k by the end of 2011, meaning it has sold 75k since. It's David's fifth Platinum single and Rihanna's 14th!

'Two Fingers' sold 100k by the end of its Top 100 chart run so has managed to double that outside of it, which is good going!

'Blue Jeans' sold 50k+ by the end of its Top 100 chart run. Not at all surprised it has managed to rake up so many trickle sales given I imagine Lana gets a lot of trickle streams.

'f***in' Perfect' sold 300k by the end of 2011, meaning 100k since. It is P!nk's 7th Gold+ single, with 'Just Like a Pill' surely not far away.

'That's Not Me' passed 100k last August, meaning another 100k in 6 months. It's still Top 200 now FYI.

'Naive' sold a mere 186k in 2006, meaning 414k in the following 9 years.

'Often' passes 200k despite never reaching higher than #65. It's currently being re-released/re-promoted so maybe Gold could be on the cards?

'California Love' sold 160k in 1996, so has sold just 40k since.

'Fill Me In' sold 480k in 2000, so has sold 120k since.

'Grounds for Divorce' sold just 39k in 2008, so has sold 161k since.

It was listed as one of a handful of post-millennium #1 singles not to be certified, but Gareth Malone's 'Wake Me Up' has finally passed 200k. It sold only 175k after a chart run of 1-7-54-107-OUT, so has sold an actually surprising amount of 25k since.

'Numb' failed to reach the 2003 YE, meaning less than 37k and a huge 360k+ sold since. If the sales of Linkin Park's solo of 'Numb' and collab 'Numb/Encore' with Jay-Z were combined, it would have been a million seller sometime in 2015.

'We Dance On' sold 165k in 2010, so has sold 35k since.

Tales of Us sold ~45k in 2013, so has managed ~15k since. All of Goldfrapp's studio albums have now been certified.

The New Classic sold ~50k in 2014, so has managed a somewhat surprisingly little 10k since.

Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! sold ~15k in 2013, so has managed ~45k since.
