Couldn't see this posted anywhere else but given how pivotal a figure he is amongst chart watchers of a certain age (myself included) thought it was worth mentioning here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-39...e-25-YEARS.html

Not old enough to remember him presenting the chart but the Now advert doesn't feel right without his voice on it.

I loved Mark on the Evening Session in the very early 90s. He once sent me an Altern 8 CD and a promo photo of himself (wahey!) when I wrote in about them. Hope he gets well soon.

For me Mark is the voice of the chart - when I first started getting into it in a major way in the late 90s/early noughties, his was still the voice that excitedly counted down the top 40 every Sunday evening. His breathless "IT'S HERE!! NOW (number)!!" voiceovers for the Now albums are also unmatched and truly make each album sound like a genuine event.
Can't believe he's 55 as I still think of him as fairly youthful - Radio 1 sacked him after he turned 40! Hope he gets better soon. |

For me Mark has always been the right mix of excitement and avuncular. I've been binge listening to a few of his old Top 40 rundowns dotted about on YouTube of late, and even now I immediately feel again like that 10 year old hovering by my bedside radio on Sunday evening waiting to hear who was #1 that week.

Shocked at this news. Hope Mark makes a full and speedy recovery.
Mark presented the chart show in a very professional, unbiased and enthusiastic style. It hasn't quite been the same since he left in 2002 (I think!). But things change with the times. And not always for the better. |

Dear me - he is a young candidate for that kind of condition. Mark always came across as a straightforward, decent, honest and yet professional person in his heyday on Radio 1, both at the helm of the Top 40 (which on aggregate lasted for nine years between 1990 and 2002!) and on his other daytime shows. He was always a smart presenter on TV too in his Top Of The Pops capacity. He bowed-out gracefully from R1 and I think he knew it was time to move to other things - namely lucrative voiceover for Now! and other music products, occasional spots on R2 and focusing on Wise Buddah, which I believe has become very successful. Maybe he's been working too hard at that? In any case, it doesn't feel deserved and I'm pleased the article says he'd recovering well now. A real gent and no mistake.
